FrameMaker+SGML Unix/NT

Guten Tag Miteinander,
mfg.

Based on your description, stay far, far away from inDesign -- your developer knows not what he's asking for. InDesign is great for many things (graphics, single-documents, catalogs). Not so for tagged, multi-channel technical documentation.
Here's a comparison wirtten up by Adobe. It compares Cs3, but it's still pretty spot on for Cs4.

  • Framemaker+SGML vs InDesign

I have been informed by a colleague that InDesign possesses structured authoring tools to generate XML.  My organization is presently using Framemaker+SGML authoring to generate structured markup language.  We have some very mature templates that utilize edds and dlls (generated from the FDK), to verify and validate tagged information at a somewhat intricate level.  My question is can InDesign do what Framemaker does, as far as structured authoring. Can it tag information any easier or faster.  This question comes from a disgruntled user who's responsibility it is to generate the markup. I have no previous exposure to InDesign.

I was hoping this wouldn't open another can of worms. I am indeed using the beta application pack for FM 7.2.
The strangest thing is that I've just tried it again and the sgm file saved successfully as a fm9 file and came back into framemaker with the formatting entact. I tried this several times earlier and it bombed FM completely. It might be because I didn't have any images this time. There are XSLT warnings when opening the sgm file though.
This is all moot if the SGML will be invalid.
To answer your question, I am trying to output to SGML by starting a new document using the S1000D2.21descript structured application. I then "Save As", choosing an sgm extension from the "Save as Type" dropdown. I can then open this file, special paste text from Word and save. Later, I open the .sgm file, save as a .fm file and format it.
What are the options if I can't use the beta application?
Thanks for your response. Let me know if you need any more details.

  • What's the best way to run FrameMaker 8 on a Mac?

What's my best bet for running FrameMaker 8 on a MacBook Macintosh laptop?
Can I run FM 8 directly under OS X, since it's a Unix app? Any special tricks to making it go?
Or will I need to run FM 8 under Linux or Windows? If so, I'll need to be able to copy and paste from one environment to the other. What are my options? Their pros and cons?
I'm switching from a PowerBook to a MacBook so I can run MacSpeech Dictate dictation software. Dictate ONLY runs on Intel Macs.
I currently use FrameMaker+SGML 6.0 in Classic. It CAN'T run on the Intel Macs.
I have over half a million words of FrameMaker files, including 7 volumes of cross-referenced research notes I add to almost daily. Since I am heavily dependent on FrameMaker's features, it's a must-have.
I haven't bought the MacBook yet, so if there are any hardware requirements I need to know about, or options I should consider or avoid, please let me know.

    > If I understood him correctly, the Adobe salesperson I talked to
    > yesterday runs the Unix version of FrameMaker directly under OS X
There is NO way to get the Unix (=Solaris) version of FM 8 to run
under OS X. It's an executable compiled for the SPARC processor,
    and I don't think Apple has made a SPARC/Solaris emulator... :-)

  • Need Script to save multiple FrameMaker 9.0 files as .mif

I am using FrameMaker 9.0 on a PC.
I have a number of UNIX scripts that work on .mif files.
With the older versions of FrameMaker, I was able to run FrameMaker on Unix and use the batch capabilities to create a script that opened the book and saved each file as a .mif file.
FrameMaker 9.0 is not supported on Unix, so I can't do that any more.
I have found references to scripts that will do the conversion to mif on the PC, but they all talk about older versions of FrameMaker.
What can I use to automatically convert all the files in a book to mif files?
    Thanks,
    Tim Walker

There are several plug-ins to save .mif and back to .fm
TOOLBOX for FrameMaker 9 (www.toolboxforme.com) 'FM <> MIF' allows you to generate a complete book in MIF format out of a FrameMaker book in binary format and vice versa: the book and all book components are saved in the respective format.
TOOLBOX for FrameMaker 9 'Book Transfer (FM<>MIF)' allows you to move a book with all components and generate all .fm files to .mif and vice versa.
Note: FrameMaker  9 and TOOLBOX save MIF 9 or MIF 7. There is no way to save MIF 8.

  • Populating Framemaker structured templates

Presently utilizing Framemaker+SGML 7.2 environment, along with version 7.1 of the FDK.  Our organization has a group of users that utilize templates to input structured information to generate validated SGML, specific to DTDs, that is then used as input to generate a number of other formats XML, HTML, KML.
My question is, presently all the information is manually keystroked into the templated SGML elements.  There are external resources that I have available that could enable prepopulation of the templates with information, and eliminate much of the manual input--very labor intensive.  This could speed up input and accuracy. These sources include:
    Unstructured Microsoft word documents.
    Sybase database.
Web service requests that could provide me an XML instance.
    XML fragments.
Are there any FDK resources available that would enable me to utilize this external information so that I can assist our users with prepopulating our templates?  There is currently a stigma attached with Framemaker in our production environment.  The markup of the information is the bottleneck.  If not, would upgrading to version 9.0 provide any capability to resolve this issue?
If there are any of these resources available, can you direct me to examples or provide code fragment examples.  I am not a native C programmer.

    Pony Boy,
I think I'm generally in agreement with Michael. You can probably find a way to programmatically hook into these other applications; however, it might be best to convert them to XML first, then import to FM. The reason is that FM can read XML natively. With that, you can either:
    - Use stylesheets as Michael suggests to format the content for publication, or
    - Use the FDK (or FrameScript) to pick out pieces of the XML content and stick it into another document (which sounds a lot like what you want)
I do the latter all the time and can attest that it is very straightforward, once you have some basic FDK skills. The XML markup makes for a very logical roadmap through the content that you can parse with code.
So in summary, just guessing based on your description, I think I'd tackle this as follows:
    - Settle on a common XML structure and get the third-party apps to output it. For example, get Word to generate some XML for you, which may not be simple but would probably be easier than trying to parse Word files in FM.
    - Build a structure app to import the XML to FM. In actuality, you may not need any structure app at all if you are importing it solely for the purpose of populating other docs (with the FDK). This is something else I take advantage of frequently... the ability to import raw XML and transfer the content to another template. It doesn't look like anything when it comes in, but as soon as the content is inserted into a working template with an operational EDD, it suddenly becomes formated according to the respective EDD rules.
    - Build an FDK client to do the transfer. The nature of this client would depend on the nature of content to transfer and the type of markup you are using. There may be third-party tools that can assist you with this effort.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about that. I can post sample code that deals with the transfer of content from one FM file to another. I woiuldn't be able to comment further on getting third-party app data into XML, though.

  • Removing a row from SQL query results when there is a duplicate hostname

I have a query created for a software usage report in SCCM. When there are multiple versions of the same software (Acrobat) installed on the same machine, I will receive duplicate results for the same machine. For example, it will come back with Acrobat
9 and another Acrobat 10 for HOSTNAME1. However, only Acrobat 10 has a usage count. Is it possible to delete the row for Acrobat that has a software usage count of "0/null" if there is another Acrobat results showing up that actually has a usage
count? Let me know if I need to clarify. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is more complicated than doing just "Where usage count >0 and usage is not NULL"
because I still want results that have a 0 usage count. I just don't want to have duplicate machines show up for the same software IF one of them returns a usage count of 0.

  • List numbering problem

I am trying to do the following type of list:
    a.  Step
    b.  Step
    c.  Step
        1. Sub step
        2. Sub step
    d.  Step
I am controlling the numbering in the EDD.  My problem is that step d defaults to 'c' instead of d and I have to manually change it from <a+>.\t  to  <a=4>.\t.   Steps 1 and 2 are set to <n=1>.\t and <n+>.\t.  So why doesn't the next alpha list pick up on the last alpha list instead of the last numeric list?  Is there any way to fix this?  Thanks!  JW

A FrameMaker SGML EDD can define context rules that manage the numbering instead of using paragraph formats. There are also element qualifiers that test whether a list item is first, notfirst, last, notlast, and so on that apply numbering properties, so, for example, you can move a list element from the front or end or middle of a list to one of the other positions and the formatting will adjust. This is useful when the first and last list items need different space before/after and the first item needs to start at 1, or alphabetic equivalent.
I'm not using structure, so my suggestion may not apply in XML or DITA development. You can read about formatting rules in the Structure Applications Developer's Guide that you can find by clicking Structured Application Development in the Welcome Screen that appears when no document is open in FrameMaker 9 (can't remember 8).

  • How to define special character in html text file used in loadvars

    Hi
I'm witing some maths software and need to use the division
sign in a text file which is loaded using LoadVars().
The variable loaded is then assigned to a text area. Here's
    the variable example.
    &hint1=<title><b>Challenge 1: Instant recall
    of any table</b></title><p>Including table
    divisions eg 56 ÷ 8= </p>
the division sign is missing or a just a box. I've already
tried most options: &#x00F7; (which works in XML loaded to
    flash), &divide; %F7
    Can anyone help please?

Hi Michael. Thank you for your reply.
There is no declaration within sgm file itself - but while opening the file I use sgml application definition with the following settings:
    Default API client:  FmTranslator
    SGML character encoding:  ISO Latin1
    XML character encoding:  UTF-8
    Namespace: Enable
    CSS2 Preferences:
    Generate CSS2: Disable
Add Fm CSS Attribute To XML: Disable
    Retain Stylesheet Information: Disable
    Entity locations
    Entity search paths
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker9\Structure\sgml\isoents
So as you can see, character encoding is set to ISO Latin1 (there is no way to use UTF-8 encoding in sgml files)
Typing ź or ć in sgm document and opening it with framemaker sgml application - I receive: ¿æ and message: "Non-SGML character found; should have been character reference"
Everything works fine when I type f.ex.: &x016B; and insert appropriate reference lines into isolat1.rw and isolat1.ent files
But what I would like to avoid is editing those isoent files each time new character is be needed.

  • How to insert special character in sgm file and interprete it without isoents while opening in FM9.0

I have an sgm file which contains special characters in different languages.
    <!DOCTYPE MANUAL PUBLIC "-//SWE-XXX//DTD XXX MANUAL-DTD 2.0//EN">
    <MANUAL LANG="CS">
    <TITEL>
    Polish characters: &oacute;&ecirc;&iquest;&ntilde;&aelig;&Ntilde;&AElig;&Ecirc;&yen;&Oacute;&pound;
    Czech characters: &eacute;&igrave;&oacute;&iuml;&aacute;&oslash;&egrave;&iacute;&ugrave;&ograve;&uacute;&Og rave;&Igrave;&Eacute;&Oacute;&Uacute;&Ugrave;&Egrave;&Oslash;&Iacute;&Aacute;&Iuml; aacute: &aacute;</TITEL>
    </MANUAL>
Is there any way to insert special character directly in sgm file, so that it won't have to be interpreted by isoents mapping rules?
    isoent.rwr interpretes oacute as:
    entity "oacute" is fm char 0x00F3;
But I would like to use 0x00F3 directly in fm file, so that if any additional character is needed - I won't have to update isoent files
    I've tested already:
    &#x00F3;
    &x00F3;
    &0x00F3;
    but with no luck
Is there anyone who could help me with it?
I will really appreciate your help
    /Joanna

  • Dropping characters in text lines (FM8)

I'm experiencing problems with dropped characters in text lines. Also, I've noticed the history doesn't seem to log all changes made to text lines. The problem can be duplicated as follows:
    1. Open a new portrait blank document and add an anchored frame. (recorded in history)
    2. Add a text line inside the anchored frame from the Tools Palette. In the text line, type "1234" (recorded in history).
    3. Save the file. (history cleared)
    4. Click the cursor after the "4" in the text line and hit a carriage return to create a new text line. (not recorded in history)
    5. In the new text line, type "1234567890"(not recorded in history)
    6. Save the file.
    7. Refresh the screen (cntl l) and the second text line now reads "12346890" (dropped the 5 and 7). Printing the file in steps 5 and 6 also show the 5 and 7 are missing.
    8. Add a new text line inside the anchored frame from the Tools Palette. In the text line, type "12345" (recorded in history).
    9. Save the file. (history cleared)
    10. Click the cursor after the "5" in the text line from step 8 and hit a carriage return to create a new text line. (not recorded in history)
    11. In the new text line, type "1234567890"(not recorded in history)
    12. Save the file.
    13. Refresh the screen and the second text line now reads "12345790" (dropped the 6 and 8).
Has anyone else seen this problem (or can duplicate it)?
Also, can someone explain why some of the steps above are not recorded in the history.
FYI, while trying to find a repeatable sequence to demonstrate this problem, Frame crashed on me.
I'm running a trial version of Frame 8, version 8.0p273, with XP Pro, on a fairly new Dell Optiplex 740.
    Thanks,
    Jeff Schweiner

    Hi Jeff,
I have now tried what you're doing and get the same result!
I have also added a text line with characters a to z. After saving ad doing a ctrl-l, the character after the last one, and the character second after that, in the previous line, was removed. (I first typed "abcd", saved, made a new line, typed "abcdefghi", saved, made ctrl-l, the characters "e" and "g" were removed).
I have the same version of FrameMaker + SGML, but this is a licensed version, running on Win 2000.

    Sean,
I know, I know: everybody's an editor, but how about this?
To create a PDF from FrameMaker make sure that you have installed the Acrobat Distiller printer instance. This is NOT done by using the Add Printer option found in Start > Settings > Printers. Instead:
    1. Download the latest Adobe Universal Printer Driver Installer from Adobe.
    2. Make sure you have the latest PPD file available. You will be asked to find it during printer installation.
    3. Double-click the .exe file to install the driver you downloaded.
    4. When you are asked for the PPD file, browse to find it on your system.
Now you will have a printer instance called Acrobat Distiller. Use this printer when you create PDF files or when you create PostScript files from FrameMaker.
Do not use Save As PDF! This seems handy, but doesn't let you control Distiller job options. Instead:
    1. From your Frame file or Frame book file, Print.
    2. Make sure to select Print to File.
    3. Make sure that Acrobat Distiller is the printer selected. It is good practice to make sure Acrobat Distiller is the default printer for your system before you go from Frame to Acrobat.
    4. Distill the resulting postscript file.
Using watched folders can make your Frame-to-Acrobat tasks nearly automatic. See the Acrobat Guide for more information.
Sean, I think that your post may give the beginner a little too much information they won't understand until they've been at this for awhile. The "If you are outputting to a service bureau..." part for example. I think the FAQ should answer the questions for beginners. As they gain more experience and confidence, they will start to do things your way--the daring Save As, for example!
Your troubleshooting ideas are great. Can you add, under the b&w or grayscale PDF problem that it might be caused by selecting Spot as Black in the Frame print dialog?
Hope I'm not too much a pain about this... Also hope I didn't mess up the details in my suggestions...

  • Imported graphics partially obscurred by black rectangles in PDF

When I PDF a document with a lot of imported graphics, alot of the graphics are partially obscurred by black rectangles. I'm using the Adobe PDF print driver. Many of the graphics are BMPs (I inherited the files, I know it's a dumb format to use).
I've tried reimporting the graphics but still no luck.
    I'm using structured Frame + SGML 6.0.
    Any ideas?

    Distiller 7.0
    FrameMaker+SGML 6.0p357
    Windows XP Pro SP 2
    Acrobat 7
    (Don't know about the updates)
It's running in emulation mode on a UNX box, so perhaps that makes a difference, but I think it has something to do with the graphics, since they don't always show the black box.

  • CorelDraw "New updates and messages"

Hi...I've been running FrameMaker 6 for years now (specifically FrameMaker+SGML, v6.0p405). Lately when I open a Frame page with a graphic, a Web window open telling me about CorelDraw Grapics Suite updates. This can happen literally dozens of times when paging through a Frame chapter. Anyone know how to get rid of this?

    Philip
From the CorelDRAW X3 Help system:
    "Updating Corel products
You can use the InstallShield Update Manager to check for updates to Corel software and other software products online. When product updates become available, you can choose to have them downloaded and installed automatically. You can also set how often the Update Manager checks for product updates.
You can access the Update Manager by clicking Program Updates on the Start menu of the Windows taskbar. For information about using the Update Manager, see the Help topics in the Update Manager dialog box
Try to see if that helps you

  • Must install for all forum members

Hi everyone! Mods please move if I'm in the wrong forum?
Lenovo have launched a new laptop T Series I think that has a 'find my laptop' facility. But for the rest of you with older machines, please do not gut your lives as mine has been done unto? Do no procrastinate! Follow my suggestion. Do it now, while you can.
My new Z was stolen on Comrades Marathon day in S.Africa. My business in jeopardy as nothing had yet been backed up. This is why I refer to it as 'gutting ones life'. On the Monday after I found out that 3 laptops had been taken in that one day at the same shopping centre. Two of them Lenovos (they get sold at a taxi rank for ZAR50 or USD12!, this is for a ZAR 9000 machine!).
There are 2 very helpfull software packages that you can get:1) is a look for me type thing that traces the computer whenever it logs onto the net. 2) The other uploads photos at 15 min intervals of the person using the web on your computer. Choose one, choose both but install them. Google stolen Lenovo, you will see the agony of people wordwide. It is worth it to do.
My aim is to buy this new T series or whichever it is, if I can survive & resurect my ailing company because of the lost data. Obtaining a 'look for me' is - to me anyway, the most important & first consideration I will choose my next machine by.
Regards & 'may the Lenovo always be with you'.

    Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the answers. Sounds like a very creative group.
Our brilliant in-house WebWorks administrator set things up to convert FrameMaker+SGML to Oracle Help. This works really well because:
    1. we type the help TopicID string into each FrameMaker+SGML Chapter-level and Section-level Id attribute. Each Chapter-level and Section-level group of SGML elements is converted to a separate help topic html file.
    2. each TopicID and html file name is added to the MAP file.
    3. each Id attribute value and the associated Title string convert to the TOC.xml entries
    4. the Id attribute value becomes the target (Linkend) of any FrameMaker+SGML, cross-reference....making it possible to convert FrameMaker cross-references to Oracle Help links
    5. cross-references to FrameMaker+SGML Glossary Term elements are converted to Oracle Help popups (and we assign the help TopicID for popups using the Glossary Term element's Id attribute)
    6. ALink group membership is established by putting the ALink group name into a hidden marker within the chapter/section where WWP can find it. We use an additional marker to designate the location where a text-string should become a link to display the list of ALink members in Oracle Help.
We have been able to automate all aspects of the conversion including the helpset, index, full-text-search, and link files.
Pete, would you be willing to share information about your in-house FrameMaker+XML and XHTML Converter tool strategy? Are you taking a similar approach?
    Best regards,
    Wendy
