What is the best strategy to port a 400 pages script to latex from framemaker? So far I was looking into html2latex or xml2latex but this is not satisfying because of Equations ect.
Help would be appreciated. thanks

Converting FrameMaker Index Markers to LaTeX
I would like to convert a 600-page FrameMaker 7.2 book to LaTeX.
Converting the text from FrameMaker to LaTeX is not a problem.
However, I am not sure how to preserve the index markers in the text. Any suggestions?If I understand what you're doing in this case, the script should be loading the converted part numbers into custom index markers for each specific product (or variant). The when you create the index, you specify which index marker to use (not just re-using the same generic index maker), i.e. have a different book file & corresponding index for each different product. This is much easier to control than trying any conditional approach for the index content.
However, I do not understand how Index markers could in any way affect your Table of Contents. Could you please elaborate or provide an example. -
Floating Objects a la Framemaker (CS4ME Win7bit64)
Hello,
I'm working on a book with hundreds of anchored objects that are pictures of varying sizes.
In Framemaker and LaTex there is a feature called "floating objects." This will take your anchored objects and place them in the nearest vacant top-of-page slot available. Meanwhile, the regular main text continues flowing where the anchored object was, eliminating ugly white gaps.
Since this feature does not exist in InDesign, what do people do in such cases?
The manual workaround is to turn the graphics into regular objects (not anchored objects), and paste them where necessary. This is going to be very tedious, and extremely inflexible if there are any late edits.
Are there any clever workarounds in InDesign? Or scripts or plugins that help in such a situation?

ArielAny tips and suggestions would be welcome! We're talking a book full of pictures (1 or 2 a page). The pictures should ideally sit at the top of the pages, as near as possible to their first reference in the main text. I'm trying to keep things as flexible as possible, so that the inevitable future edits will not entail manually repositioning each graphic.

Some CGM graphics do not appear when FrameMaker files are converted to PDF
CGM files are exported from ISO (Arbortext Isodraw 7.0 CadProcess) files. Then they are imported into Adobe FrameMaker 7.2, where all elements of the illustration are visible and can be printed. The FrameMaker FM file is converted to a PDF file using the Adobe PDF converter function of Frame. When the PDF file is opened by Adobe Acrobat 8,0 Professional, some, but not all of the illustrations in the file exhibit this problem (The callouts and other text may appear, but the lines, curves, etc. do not). The illustration prints the same way it appears on the screen. When exporting the ISO file as a CGM, the following selections are made.
When importing file into Frame, "Import by Reference" is selected.
When creating PDF in Frame, the following selections are made.

First you should update to the latest version of Acrobat 8, since you say
you are running Acrobat 8, you should update to 8.2.5. Update your
FrameMaker to 7.2p158. Those two steps might do the trick. If that fails
try using a different settings file. Perhaps High Quality or Press
Quality. I would never use Standard for anything where fidelity is

Problem Working With Framemaker 9 Dita XML Files in Framemaker 10
I just upgraded to Framemaker 10. I am encountering a number of problems when I try to work with my Dita XML help topics, which were last saved in Framemaker 9 format.
1. Using the Default Dita Template
When I open one of my documents in Framemaker 10, the Dita 1.2 template ditabase.fm is automatically applied. Everything seems fine. But then when I convert the XML to Eclipse help (which is essentially html, so we're going from XML to HTML) using Dita Open Toolkit ant scripts, I see this message:
[pipeline] [DOTJ013E][ERROR] Failed to parse the referenced file 'html\c_licensing.xml' due to below exception. Please correct the reference base on the exception message.
[pipeline] c_licensing.xml Line 25:Attribute "xmlns:ditaarch" must be declared for element type "dita".
I then opened the xml file in a text editor, and I saw this on line 25:
<dita xmlns:ditaarch = "http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/">
Line 25 looks fine to me. Am I missing something?
2. Switching to a 1.1 Dita Template
I tried to work around the above problem. In Framemaker, I tried to set a different structured application as the default one. I closed all files and chose the default Dita 1.1 structured application (it defaults to the Dita 1.1. Composite app.)
Then I tried to open my file: I got this message inside Framemaker:
"Validation of XML failed. Continue?
Error at [FILE PATH], line 25, char 72, Message: Attribute '{http://www.w3.org/2000/xmlns/}ditaarch' is not declared for element 'dita'
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
I switched from the default Dita 1.1. Composite structured application to the Dita 1.1. Topic structured application. Then I dirtied the source file and saved it. The messages I got in FrameMaker log window included the one above, plus I got a variety of Unknown Element messages, things like this:
Unknown element dita,
unknown element concept,
various attributes are not declared for concept,
unknown element conbody.
If I switch back to the Dita 1.1 Composite application all of these messages diappear except for this one:
Attribute '{http://www.w3.org/2000/xmlns/}ditaarch' is not declared for element 'dita'
My ant conversion scripts from the Dita Open Toolkit are still unable to process this file. They give the same message as is listed in (1) above and the file is not converted to HTML.
Can anyone help me with this problem? I've also posted this question to the Dita Users Group on Yahoo Groups. If I get an answer in one place, I'll post it in the other.

Application Mappings:
I figured out how to add my "BigPage" structured application to the Applications Mappings dialog. I made a new "BigPage" mapping type, then figured out the non-intuitive part: how to add my individual BigPage topic types to it. I closed and reopened FrameMaker opened my test document, and, as before (before I did the application mappings) I saw my BigPage applications listed in the Structure Tools > Set Structured Application drop-down. I selected the appropriate application (in this case it was DITA1.1-BigPage-Reference-FM and clicked the "Set" button.
It is at this point in Framemaker 9 (and also once, in FrameMaker 10, early in this process, but I haven't been able to replicate it since) that the page size would change to tabloid size, indicating that the document was using the template from the BigPage reference structured application, not the regular DITA1.1 reference application. But this did not happen.
I tried saving the document, closing it, and reopening it. Once again the default structured application assigned to that document was "reset" to DITA1.1-Reference-FM. But the fact that the page size did not immediate refresh to tabloid size told me that although I did select the BigPage application in the drop-down, it wasn't being applied.
Public IDs:

Directory Structure:
Maybe I cloned the application incorrectly? Here's what I did:
1. In C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\Structure\xml, I copied the folder called DITA and pasted it into the same directory. I renamed this folder DITA-BigPage
2. Inside DITA-BigPage, I opened the app folder. Inside each subfolder in app, DITA-Reference-FM, for example, I opened the edd file in Framemaker. In this case, the edd file name was reference.edd.fm.
3. I edited the top line of reference.edd.fm. It originally said:
Structured Application: DITA1.1-Reference-FM.
I changed it to say:
Structured Application: DITA1.1-BigPage-Reference-FM
4. I saved the EDD file. Then I opened the template file in the same folder. It was called: reference.template.fm.
5. In reference.template.fm, I first changed my page size: Format Menu > Page Layout > Page Size > Tabloid > Set.
6. Then I imported the element definitions from the corresponding EDD file: File > Import > Element Definitions > reference.edd.fm > Click Import > Click OK to dismiss verification message.
7. I repeated the above process for all topic-type folders. For the maps types, I did not change the page size, as these will never display as topics in my online help. I did nothing to the dtd folder.
8. Once all this was done, I opened structapps.fm. I did the following to all Dita1.1 elements in the structure tree.
Selected the Dita 1.1 XMLApplication element, for instance, the one named Dita1.1-Reference-FM, copied it, and pasted it underneath the original element.
The original first few lines in the clone looked like this:

Template: $STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA\app\DITA-Reference-FM\reference.template.fm
DTD: $STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA\app\dtd\reference.dtd

I changed these lines to look like this, using your suggestion to create a variable for the first part of the URLs to enable speed and accuracy:

I also changed the "Filename" URLs in the "Entity Locations" section of this XMLApplication clone from $STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA\app\ to $STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA-BigPage\app\. Applying the "BigPage" variable I'd created for this purpose made this go quickly.
Finally, after this didn't work the first few times I tried it, I got suspicious that the structapps.fm file in my AppData folder (in my case, it was in the Roaming subfolder under the usual Adobe directories) was overriding the modified structapps.fm file in the Framemaker program directory so I replaced the one in AppData (it had all the original settings) with my modified version. This had no effect, unfortunately.
That was my process. After doing the above, the Dita1.1-BigPage applications all listed in the Set Structured App drop-down. They just didn't work,when applied to my XML documents. Nor did the application "remember" what structured application I had set when I opened a new xml document or closed/reopened the current document or closed/reopened the application. Did I place the directories correctly for Framemaker 10? This is the way I did it for FrameMaker 9 and it worked successfully.
As much as I'd love to solve this mystery, I've thought of a workaround I can fall back on that doesn't involve using a cloned application. I will change the page size of a few of the original Dita1.1 sturctured application templates to tabloid size, but leave the Topic structured application at letter size. I'll then apply the Topic structured application to my PDFs and use the others for my help topics. I'll set this up now. If this doesn't work, then I'll know there's a much bigger problem at the base of this, perhaps even something to do with changing page sizes in templates. -
How can I get all of my graphics to import from FrameMaker?
I am evaluating Robohelp HTML version 9, which I'm considering using for single-sourcing FrameMaker 7.1 files.
I imported my FrameMaker files, and only 2 out of 75 graphics were imported.
The results window shows that all FM files were imported successfully.
However, in the Project Manager, only these two files appear.
The graphics are BMPs, the same as all the other graphics.
Everything about them seems to be the same as all the other graphics.
So I prepared a TEST FrameMaker file. I placed the two graphics that had imported successfully first, along with a selection of the other graphics. Guess what? All of the graphics imported successfully into RH.
Feeling optimistic, I imported my FrameMaker project into RH again, using the same TEST RH project. Guess what? Only the two original graphics appeared and no others.
Can anyone help me solve this mystery?
Thanks so much!Sounds like an issue with an individual graphic, not with the process itself. If the 2 successful graphics are the first or last in your project, I'd start testing by importing the graphics in closest proximity...otherwise you may have to import in batches to find the offending file.
If you have a graphic in a format other than that of the "successful" graphics, you may want to test that format in particular.
One thing to consider: As I'm sure you know, any missing resources (fonts, graphics, xrefs) and any errors in updating your book will keep FrameMaker from operating smoothly. If you are sending FM info elsewhere (PDF, HTML, Help) then these subtle deficiencies can cause problems with info sent out of FM as well. "Fix" your FM files and you might solve seemingly unrelated issues elsewhere.
*Note: You mentioned you're testing single sourcing...FM7 files will require import to RoboHelp. With an eval copy of TCS3, you'd be able to create a link to FM10 files, allowing you update the RH9 via the FM10 files. It is a similar process, but by linking, you'll eliminate the importing and/or post processing of the HTML and significantly reduce the time needed to update your RH content.

My colleague and I use FrameMaker 8 but I'm considering whether it would be a good idea to upgrade to FrameMaker 12. So today I installed a trail version of FrameMaker 12.
Before opening a book file in FM12, I copied it to another folder so I wouldn't mess up anything. Unfortunately, I forgot to copy the chapter files so I opened most of them from FM12. As soon as I found out about it, I copied them to the new folder, but too late.
Now I'm not able to open the original files from FM8 (and even worse, neither can my colleague). I read somewhere else, that I should save the book file in the .MIF format (I tried both 12 and 7.0) and then open it from FM8. I tried that, but I still cannot open the chapter files.
I get an error message saying: "Althoug xxx.fm appears to be a FrameMaker document, it can't be opened with this release of the product".
I didn't make any changes to the chapter files when I looked at them in FM 12.
What should I do? I case we decide not to upgrade, we will not be able to access this book which is a big problem. I already have some small changes that have to be made.
Thanks in advance for your help!Back saving to MIF should work, but it’s probably faster to just retrieve a backup of the FM8 files & books and restore them over your botched FM12 versions. Then take a copy of that backup and put it on the trial machine to play away without impacting anything else.

1. In Paragraph Designer, for Tab Stops, click Edit. Edit Tab Stop dialog box opens, and the Paragraph Designer dialog box closes.
2. Type value in New Position box.
3. Click Continue. The Edit Tab Stop box closes.
4. Open Paragraph Designer. No tabs are recorded.
Discussion of a similar problem occured on this forum in June 2010. At that time, the resolution seemed to be to upgrade to 9.0.3. Has anyone else encountered this problem with these versions?

TCS 3 FrameMaker DItamap import returns "Failed to get any FrameMaker document from"
Hi,
I recently aquired the TCS 3 and I am trying to build a help project using a ditamap. I was able to do this once, but I ended up scrapping the project fbacause FrameMaker ran out of memory when I tried to update the project.
Now, I see this error when I try to import or link my ditamap to a new project.
I followed the steps as shown in the Robohelp docs.
Any thoughts on things I need to do to fix this.
RH 9 did crash once, could there be some garbage cleanup I need to do?
Is there other info I can pass on that may help?
LaurenOK. Is there a Best Practices approach to the procedure? And yes, I am assuming that it will be more complicated than just using the Windows uninstall function.

TCS2 - FrameMaker Cross-reference formats completely ignored...
In RoboHelp I have changed all my cross-reference formats to <paratext>. However, this mapping seems to be completely ignored. What file drives these styles? I can run a template in FrameMaker to strip out the page numbers and autonumbers, but this setup should work in RoboHelp.
Anyone having the same problem?

FrameMaker 11 trial version crashing on save and cross-reference insertion
Hi everyone,
I've recently started a new position. My prior background was heavily DITA, and I'd describe my FrameMaker experience as late beginner or early intermediate. The new position uses FM exclusively though, so I've been on a steep learning curve lately.
I'm using the trial version of FrameMaker 11, downloaded about two weeks ago, until the PO for my full FM 11 license is processed. I'm working in book and document files that have been upgraded, I believe, from FM 9 to FM 10 and then from FM 10 to FM 11. All of my colleagues are still using FM 10, with a mind to upgrade to FM 11 in the spring as our new budget comes through (I am, so to speak, the FM 11 guinea pig for the group).
My workstation is a brand new HP Elitebook laptop running Windows 7 64-bit (I believe our IT department downgraded it from Windows 8). Windows is fully up-to-date. My trial version of FM 11 is 11.0.1.382 and also up-to-date as of this message.
My issue: FM 11 randomly crashes several times a week, sometimes once a day or so, sometimes when I try any of the following:
Saving all files in a book (using Shift + the File menu command)
Saving individual document files (generally using the Save icon in the tool bar)
Attempting to insert a cross-reference (placing the insertion point within the document, then opening the Cross-Reference tool in the right-hand side bar)
The crash takes the appearance of FM freezing for several seconds, then the dreaded message window opening with the words "FrameMaker has detected a serious error and must quit", with columns of error codes below.
I've googled and binged and not found anything for this issue in FM 11, so I thought I'd post here. I have tried the following, based on somewhat similar discussions I've seen for crashes in earlier versions of FM)
Mif-washing the files
Working in the Structured FrameMaker interface instead of the Unstructured
Neither of these has worked. FM 11 trial continues to crash. It doesn't happen often; I'd say that I'm able to successfully able to perform the above tasks 20 times or so, with the crash on the 21st. But on a busy day, that's a few crashes a day.
To mitigate damage, I have autosave set to every two minutes and gotten in the habit of only having one or two documents open, instead of all in a book, to minimize the number of recovery files I need to process.
After one of the initial crashes, I did as Adobe asked and forwarded the crash report to them for troubleshooting.
My colleagues are watching all this very closely, and my troubles might influence our decision to upgrade from FM 10 to FM 11. So any insight into this issue would be appreciated!

The multitude of unesolved x-refs may due to the font issues when updating the book. During an update, if the files aren't open, FM tries to open them in the background but if it encounters an error like a missing font, it skips the file and then any x-refs to that file are unresolved. This can cascade to make things look really worse than they are.
What is your default printer when you start FM? It should be the Adobe PDF prnter instance. If not, then you might want to insatll the Sundorne SetPrint utility (http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm) thta will automatically set this for your FM sessions only.
One other place where fonts can hide is in table definitions. The catalog stores the font information (and not just the explicit paratag) of the cells in the header and first row. As Jeff mentions, you need to check the MIF file in detail. An excellent tool for quickly browsing your MIF is Graham Wideman's Mifbrowse (http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm). -
Problem with save as PDF with FrameMaker 12

I just received FrameMaker 12 and I like it.
But I'm having problems when I use the save as PDF function.
It takes very long time to generate the PDF (at least 30 minutes for a book)
The fonts and spaces are messed up in the finished PDF. Some text blocks have paragraphs running over the margin
I have tried a couple of different things:
saving as MIF and back to FM
uncheck rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts
but nothing have worked yet, please help I'm getting frustrated.Hi Jeff,
After I realized that I didn't make the setprint.ini file, I did that and deleted the printer=adobe pdf in the .dll file. But it still doesn't work. I save to pdf anyway, I was just trying to optimize my usage by making the default printer in FM the adobe pdf printer.
Anyway, the .dll file from above has the below information in it. I don't know what it means, but it has errors all over. Does this make a difference and what does it mean?....Thanks!

Mark, it's EERIE that you should say this to me today because this is exactly what I have been thinking! I can put a song on a page with one eye shut now, and I can zip around those files pretty well (except for the recent fiasco where I didn't even look at the right folder). I also notice that the level of my writing is sounding more technical and familiar with digital world jargon. I remember how you told me I could do it, and you were right. You all were right and I feel more knowledgeable and at a point where I suspect that I can take steps on my own. HTML is a strange land, but just being able to edit that .js file and FIND it by navigating for it in Text Edit has made me feel much more competent.
Before iWeb I didn't realize what Text Edit was for. I used it to take quick fast short notes. I never understood that concept of "opening something up in so and so application." The first time I clicked OPEN in Text Edit, and I saw all those danged files staring at me with beady eyes, I wanted to throw a white hanky and run for the hills. Not any more!

Does anyone have an fmbatch file which could find all the .fm files in a given directory, open them with FrameMaker and the save them as a PDF file.
Or
Can someone show me the commands required to do that?Of you could just make a quick temporary book including all the .fm files
in the directory and print them to PDFs (no, not SaveAs) and specify
individual files as output.

Framemaker 12, Save as PDF and Print PDF Not working...
We are using Framemaker 12 version 12.0.3.424, it tells me it is the latest patch level, and the issue we are having is that it won't either save as or print to PDF, both options are failing, they start up and then go to a certain point and come up as "not responding" and then just stops. I have managed to get a postscript file on two occasions that got 141 pages out of 1400+. I have gone through a bunch of the threads here and made sure that I have changed Adobe PDF printer to the default and deselected the box about using the specific fonts, still nothing. We are also using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard, and that is now up to the latest patch level as well. I am running out of things to try in order to get this full book put together and ready for delivery. If anyone has any additional things to try that would be great. One thing I feel might be an issue is that some of the files seem to be using a different font, "Times" vs. "Times New Roman", Frame automatically substitutes it, so was wondering if that is the issue.

Then you aren't anywhere near a 32-bit file size constraint.

Pretty much all CPUs are 64-bit now. What matters is the OS version, and Win7 and 8 installs are commonly 64-bit these days. FM may not even have specific 32- or 64-bit installs. I've tested FM9 on Win7/64 for file size limits, and it sails past 4GB with no problems.

As if the world needed another reason to never ever use OLE for anything anywhere, esp. in Framemaker. Export that object in a stable graphical file format (PDF should work). Import that.
