Frames vs. Windows in Acrobat 9

We recently upgraded from Acrobat 7 to Acrobat 9.
Users who open multiple PDF documents in Acrobat have reported the default behavior of Acrobat 9 in opening PDFs is to use a new frame for each document that is opened.
They report that Acrobat 7 used multiple windows in a single frame as the default behavior.
Can this be changed in Acrobat 9 and if so, how?
Thanks,
Jesse Perry

This is the worst thing to happen to acrobat, in my opinion.
The clutter that it creates on my computer and the fact that i cant even see the document title when I have a bunch of them open (because the task bar is too full) is unacceptable.
I never would have changed from Acrobat 8 if I had known, and now I cant switch back (company license).
The latest thing i can find about addressing it is here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb405108&sliceId=1
which was in november 2008....
why hasnt any thing else been done about it?  I just spent 45 minutes being sent to different departments over the phone, only to be told to submit a feature request.
Please do this if you havent already:

  • Insert a frame or window into adobe acrobat  or reader window

    Using Windows OS XP or Vista. Can you ad a frame or window into the main window to allow saving a document through another application? I have an application that routes save documents to specific folders depending on the type of document. I would like to be able to allow my clients to open or create a PDF and then have the option to use the application through a frame or window displayed under the "pages" or "bookmarks" area of Adobe reader. Is this possible and can you point me in the right direction.

    Leonard - Could this "new" window contain a custom form as an object. we have used it in Microsoft Outlook with success for customers to insert information pertinent to an email item and then save the item to our application. What I am looking for is to allow our clients to open a pdf or create one and be able to save it as always but with the option to open this "pane" and enter information needed by our routing application. if this is possible can you point me to specific area to start looking as the SDK is very large and informative. I am lookg for a good starting point.

  • Resize javascript debugger window in acrobat

    I feel stupid.  I am trying to learn adobe javascripting.  I am following Adobe's web tutorial.(The tutorial screen shots have nice big windows.)  However the console window only shows 40 characters to a line.  On this debug window, there is no resize icon in the upper right hand corner of the window.  I tried to right click and drag sides, corners, top, and bottom, but no luck. I get a double-ended arrow like it should resize, but the window  The acrobat pro window is full-size, but the debug window is only 1/6th of that window.
    I am using a laptop with Vista Home Premium with Adobe Acrobat 9 with its latest updates.
    I took a look at the general support group, but just questions about using Adobe Acrobat.  I went back two months on the scripting group with no luck.
    Thank you

    you can grab the bottom right corner of the acrobat debug window to resize.  You'll want to make sure to grab the little dotted triangle icon inside the window, not the actual corner of the window itself.

  • How to check Windows for Acrobat Reader?

    Hello, everyone. I hope you are having a nice weekend! :)
    I'm trying to check to see if Windows XP PCs have Acrobat
    Reader installed on a button that launches a PDF file. This is what
    I have:
    on mouseUp
    set Acrobat = baFindApp( "pdf" )
    if Acrobat = "" then
    Alert "You will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader to view
    the PDF documents properly."
    else
    baOpenFile(the pathName&"Data/button1.pdf","")
    end if
    end
    This launches the PDF on Windows if Acrobat is installed
    without errors, but when I uninstall Reader and click on the
    button, nothing happens. I don't get the alert and I don't get the
    PDF launched.
    This script actually gives me the alert on the Mac, but it's
    moot.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    It's not clear if you uninstalled Reader and then rebooted...
    this might give a false positive... also, the notes for the docs
    strongly suggest that baFindApp() looks for the registration of the
    file extension which would be located in the registry...
    ... an interesting note: if Adobe Acrobat and Reader are both
    installed, for instance, then the baFindApp() call will return
    Acrobat.exe as the application (on my system, anyways) -
    technically, Acrobat, Reader and GoLive have all registered .pdf on
    my machine, but the registry lists entries alphabetically so
    Acrobat gets the recognition, so-to-speak.
    It would appear that baFindApp() has a flaw if two or more
    applications have registered the same extension.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud on Windows + Adobe Acrobat - Keeps going into Demo mode

    Hi,
    Not sure my subject line is accurate, but here's my situation.
    I have Adobe Creative Cloud - Student Membership.
    I have it installed on my Macbook Pro on both the Mac OS X 10.9.2 and Windows 8.1 (Boot Camp) side.
    So this counts as two computers... I have not installed it on any other computer.  Nor have I attempted to sign in to it on any other computer.
    On the Mac side everything is fine.
    On the Windows side... Creative Cloud refuses to stay signed in.  Now, I don't mind clicking sign in and typing my password... it's annoying, but fine... I'll deal with it.
    What I do mind... is Acrobat closing after about 30-45 seconds while I'm in the middle of doing something.  I'll have set everything up and then bam the window closes, no warnings, no requests to save... NOTHING...
    So, I'll do it again... and again... it'll happen.  Eventually it asks me to sign back in and then I'm good for a while.  But it reverts to Demo mode saying I have no trial days left.  But, I'm a paying member!!!!  I shouldn't have to a) log in every day (or sometimes several times a day) or b) have my program literally close without warning while I'm working in it - and sometimes not being able to save the work I just did - and twice already stuff that I CAN'T get back (luckily nothing critical yet).
    Now the shutting down/closing issue seems to be only Acrobat.  The other apps seem to behave as long as I log in with the Creative Cloud systray app.
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks!

  • Center video Popup window in Acrobat 9

  • New PC Windows 7, Acrobat 9 toolbar, pdf printer

    and save as PDF don't work nor appear. Pop up MSG says Adobe app. not found, contact administrator. I suspect it's a 64 bit issue but
    do not know next steps in spite of hours of searching on line in forums and Google. Any help appreciated, and yes it worked fine before in
    32 bit Vista. JIm
    BTW downloaded and installed the only Adobe 64 bit filter for Acrobat Pro 9.0 available. No change.

    OK here's the deal, it's a windows 7 permissions issue. Had to download some amateur
    .exe files to override the protection for program installation, and now it works. Adobe would
    recognize my serial numbers though so now I'm on a 30 day trail and will have to fight with some CS person on the other side of the world to get my software (legal and paid for) recognized.
    Of course now my security is compromised, what a challenge MS has handed me for W7!

  • Unable to Open Multiple Windows  Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard

    I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard and recently am unable to open multiple documents at one time without an error occurring and Adobe shutting down.  I use multiple screens and want one doc open while I review or compare with another doc.  It is happening on two machines at my home both running Windows 8.1.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Ankit,
    Thank you for your advice, but Im still having problems.
    Back to the OP.  To avoid the threads getting confused, I suggest the other user starts a new one?
    I have tried ensuring that PDFs are automatically opened by Adobe.  I used the path you suggested.  However, I'm still having the same problem.
    When I went to do this, Adobe was listed in the "recommended" list of products with which to open PDF files.  However, I ignored this and followed your guidance.  Once I had done, nothing happened (i.e. Adobe icon was not added to the 'Other products' list below the 'Recommended').
    To me, this speaks of either a bad installation or bad association in which something is causing Adobe not to recognise itself.
    What else can you advise?
    Is there, for instance, a way to have a clean removal of Adobe, and then reinstall?  I don't even know if this will work.

  • Save as PDF dialog popping under all other windows using Acrobat 9

    One of my clients  recently upgraded a bunch of their workstations to Windows 7 64bit  Enterprise edition.  Now when they try to print to a PDF by selecting the print option in any application and then selecting the PDF printer, the dialog box pops  under all the other windows.  The result is the application appears to  freeze, as it is stuck at the 'now printing' screen.  See the below screenshot for a sample.  Meanwhile, the save as PDF dialog is still there and  if you click on the blank icon you can see in the attached screenshot,  the dialog will pop up and you can finish making the PDF.
    Steps  I've already taken to try to resolve this include: running a repair of  acrobat, uninstalling and reinstalling acrobat and removing and adding  the PDF printer.  So far none of this has had any effect.  I'm using the  current (that is 9.3.2) patch revision for acrobat.
    Any  help/suggestions would be most welcome!

    Are they really missing or there are place holders there? Have you gone to the preferences and turned on View Large Images? As an unrelated comment, do you really want images in a resume? Maybe if you are a graphic artist or such, but images are not common in most resumes I have seen and I would not expect such. However, that is really your choice, just wanted to comment.

  • New windows in Acrobat Pro XI are offset

    When opening PDFs in Acrobat Pro XI on a Mac, each new window opens slightly offset to the right from the previous window, regardless of whether or not that window is still open. This means that slowly the windows disappear under various tool box windows I leave open on the right of the screen, preflight etc. Then I have to start manually dragging windows back to the left so that I can read the content. Not a big deal you may think but very annoying when you have to do it hundreds of times a day.
    Is there any way to make document windows always open in the same place?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Dryck,
    This is done by design to allow you to see other open files more easily. There's no way to change this functionality at this time. To your question of 'is there any way to make document windows always open in the same place, the only workaround is to click the 'Maximize' button on the title bar.
    If you'd like to suggest an alternative to the way multiple PDF files open, our engineering team would love to hear some feedback!  You can fill out our Feature Request form here: http://adobe.ly/WishForm
    Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • IE11 can't post form data to specific frame or window dialog opened via window.open()

    Hello,
    Form POST targeting to specific frame or dialog popped up via window.open() no longer works in IE11.
    It worked fine in IE10 and all previous versions of IE.
    Please see screenshot attached with simple test that reproduces this problem.
    Direct Link to screenshot:
    http://173.231.98.44/cgi/TestFolder/IE_11_widow_frame_targeting_BUG.jpg
    Direct link to simple test page demonstrating this problem:
    http://173.231.98.44/cgi/TestFolder/page2.asp
    Note: IE11 doesn't report any errors, doesn't complain about anything, even when debugged via F12 developer tools. The only thing it complained initially was missing doc type declaration on top of page, but even after adding doc type definition, problem still
    persists, makes no difference.
    I tested this on fresh install of Windows 2012R2 while testing our web application with the new IE11.
    I believe doing this on Windows 8.1 with IE11 will result in same bug/problem.
    Our web application uses a technique whereby it launches a popup window via call to window.open(), passing blank URL and specifying a name for the new window. It then does a from post targeting the name of new dialog.
    In IE11 this functionality has been broken and no longer works.
    Problem is that IE11, instead of posting form to the newly created dialog, it launches a new instance of IE and then loads the requested form in this new instance of IE, while the dialog launched via window.open() remains on screen and is empty. If user repeats
    launching same form post request (via button click for example), IE 11 keeps creating new empty dialogs and new IE instance for every form post executed. This totally breaks our application because we use many so called "wizards" that encapsulate
    specific functionality in separate web page launched in a popup window.
    Another related problem is that if a dialog is launched with window.open(), the java script code in the dialog can not target the parent frame that opened the dialog anymore. In our application, when a dialog is closed, it typically needs to trigger a refresh
    of a specific frame within the parent window (again targeted by name) to reflect saved/updated info that user entered in the popup dialog. The result is that we can't refresh the parent frame after the pop up dialog closes. Instead, IE11 launches
    a new instance of IE (not just a tab, but a whole new instance) and loads the parent frame in it.
    The problem seems to be caused by broken frame name targeting mechanism in IE11.
    Note that we force IE to compatibility mode 5, but even without specifying any compatibility, the problem remains.
    Typical java script to reproduce this is:
    <input type="button" onClick="Popup(this.form);" name="btn2" value="Popup Dialog">
    function Popup(f){
        window.open("","MyNewDialogName","width=200,height=150");
        f.action = "page3.asp";
        f.target = "MyNewDialogName";
        f.submit();
    Expected: IE11 should correctly post form to and load targeted page in the newly popped up dialog, without opening new IE instance and new tab. Repeatedly posting form to existing popup window should reuse that window, not keep on launching more popup windows
    and then more IE instances.
    Steps to reproduce the problem (include URL if applicable):
    URL with sample page: http://173.231.98.44/cgi/TestFolder/page2.asp
    1) Create page1.htm: <html><body>display "I'm in a popup window now ..."</body></html>
    2) Create page2.htm with a button and onclick() event calling function to open dialog, and do form POST targeting new dialog calling page1.htm, like below.
    <input type="button" onClick="Popup(this.form);" name="btn2" value="Popup Dialog"> function Popup(f){
        window.open("","MyNewDialogName","width=200,height=150");
        f.action = "page1.asp";
        f.target = "MyNewDialogName";
        f.submit();
    3) Open IE11, navigate to page2.htm, click the "Popup Dialog" dialog button. IE 11 will popup the new dialog, but then it will also launch new instance of IE11 and display the page1.htm in it, instead of in the popup dialog.
    Has anyone else encountered this problem?
    Any insight or help is appreciated.
    Regards
    Peter

    the default action of <input type="button" is submit. Note also that the default type of <button> elements is 'submit' also.
    add a return false to the onclick inline event handler (which constructs the form submit attribues) to cancel the default form.submit behavior.
    form elements have a target value with which you can specify the name window into which you want the form to open in.
    <form action="process.aspx" target="popup">
    you can use the window.open method with a query uri to achieve the same outcome.
    window.open('process.aspx?s=search+term&amp;foo=bar','popup',{features})
    the outcomes of all scripted windows are affected by
    your IE Popup blocker and tabbed browsing settings
    which in turn is affected by your IE Security zone settings (for popup blocking handling)
    and the settings of any third-party popup blocker you may have installed and enabled... it may not necessarily be visible on your browser toolbar.
    The first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test in no-addons mode.
    Use the Developer Tool to find out what documentMode the test page is opening in on your system. On Modal/Modeless popup windows use the f12 key to display the Developer tool positioned on the contentWindow.
    Use File>Properties to find out what IE Security zone it maps to... there is a security setting to prevent navigation into zones of lower integrity.

  • [JS][CS3] Zoom frame to window

    Hi All.
    I need to iterate through image/text frames while doing other formatting stuff, but I want the selected frame to fit to screen.
    I have found bits on other threads:
    myFrame1.select();
    myDoc1.layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage = 200;
    will enlarge the selected frame to 200, but not centred on the screen.
    I have looked through the JS Library, and found a zoom options method, and trying to use this:
    myDoc1.layoutWindows[0].ZoomOptions = 2053534832;
    doesn't work.
    Can someone offer any help with this?
    Cheers
    Roy

    Hi Kasyan & all
    Thanks for the heads up on your script.  Its cool, but serves a different need to mine.  I actually saw Daves script before, but was not able to help me in my quest.
    I nearly have the windows doing what I want, but cannot get both windows to zoom in on the selected item.  The script I have included here will zoom both windows to 200%, and to the same part of the screen for each, which is not what I want.
    I also want to use the fit.page method instead of 200% but couldn't get it working.
    app.documents[0].select(myFrame1);//myFrame1 is already defined and is fine
    app.documents[0].layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage = 200;
    app.documents[1].select(myFrame2);//myFrame2 is already defined and is fine
    myWindow = app.activeWindow;
    app.documents[1].layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage = 200;
    app.documents[0].select(myFrame1);
    My head hurts now, and need a drink!
    Any pointers will be fondly received.
