Frameset name and index.html

Hi:
I am new student taking Dreamweaver 8 at local college. We
have been working on frames and I am so very confused. I have read
via other resources that one should save a frameset as index.html.
The instructor did not offer this information, allowing us to think
we should have frameset page and an index page.
Today, we had hands on mid term and we were instructed to
make a frameset consisting only of 2 frames, which sounded easy
enough...we were asked to name the frameset by a particular name
and then to dowload an index.html. We were then asked to insert
navigation bar on frame page, which had no other content... I am so
confused now...Most of us did not finish the exam. Please, please
help me....Should the frameset name be index.html? Thank you so
much.

Apparently so is your teacher. This is inexcusable. Frames
are SOOO 90's.
There are MANY reasons not to use them and not to teach them.
Tell your
teacher I said so. In case he/she wants to do some reading,
go here -
As far as I know, the most comprehensive discussions of
frames and their
potential problems can be found on these two links -

If you want the frameset to load when someone first comes
into your domain
with
http://www.example.com, then you
would name it with the default
filename prescribed by your host - while that *may* be
"index.html" it might
also be index.htm, or default.htm, or home.htm, or...

It would also be possible to have that as well. Thus, the
initial page that
loads when you enter the site is NOT a framed page.
> we were asked to name
> the frameset by a particular name and then to dowload an
index.html
Download? You mean you had to GET a file from the server? Or
did you mean
to UPLOAD something to the server? You can see that you have
confused me,
too....

  • Iweb and index.html won't work with ftp provider

    Hello all.
I have been working on my new website using iweb 09 and I have had problems publishing it to My ftp provider. I have followed all the prompts to the end, but when I have published my site and go looking for it on Web using my URL , it says there is an error.
I have been in touch with my host provider " Just Host" and this is the message they sent me ( I have copied and pasted it ):
As I see all you have uploaded to the *login name* account is index.html.
You have uploaded it incorrectly, to the root folder /login name/, whether index file and the rest of the site for www.mywebsite.com should be located in the /login name/public_html/ folder.
I've moved the file to the proper folder and the site started showing up the error.
    Your index.html file is incorrect.
What does this all mean? I went to the apple shop and they suggested using Mobile Me as this would not happen, but that does not suit me as I have just signed up for 4 years with Just Host and I'd like to use them. The apple shop also told me that iweb separates each page of the website and assigns an index.html to each folder for each page and they supposedly are all linked? From the above e-mail if I understand it correctly, this is not the case or do I have to do something for this to happen?
I am at a total lost and having a melt down! Can any one out there help me in plain English as I am only new to all this and am only just getting familiar with the website terminologies? I have searched many forums and have had to look up hundreds of terms in " computer " dictionaries to understand what people are talking about. Please excuse my mental breakdown, as I am really worried that all this work I have put in will go down the chute.
I'm sure you understand how frustrating it can be when something so simple becomes so difficult!
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you .
    Ben.

    Hello Ethmoid.
Thank you for your response. I have attached this e-mail to both you and Wyodor as you have been both extremely helpful.
I have managed to get my home page up thanks to your help, but for some reason now , it won't go to the following pages, about, products etc?
As I have done a few web site practices ,I have read that sometimes Iweb has trouble distinguishing between the different sites published in my site or public folders. Could this be the problem? Do I need to delete my old sites?
I tried to change the site name to another name but it won't allow me, every time I retype the new name it keeps jumping back to the extra www.etc.
Also for some reason , all the boxes where my page headings are, they seem to be out of line and a different size even though on my desktop on iweb my front page has all the boxes the same size.
    Why is this?
Once again thank you for your help.

  • Where is localhost/index.html in the file system?

I have been trying to learn php and some months ago created a file that makes "It works!" come up when I type "localhost" in the browser.  Now I can't locate where in the file system the file is.  I am not sure it is in the same spot that Apple set as the default.  I recently installed MAMP, which expects localhost to default to /Applications/MAMP/htdocs.  It doesn't.  Bottom line is I want to know how to find the "index" file that the browser looks for when I type "localhost" and how to change where the browser looks for it if I have to.  The browser I use is Firefox 15.0.1.

Tough to say where you might've directed it to be, but...
    Get Find Any File...
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Hold Option/alt when clicking on Find button to Find All.
Search for Name equals index.html, sort on Date Modified when done & see if you can find it.

  • Configure home page to index.php not index.html

Does anyone know how to get contribute to look for an index.php page instead of the index.html page upon connection?  I get an Object not Found ( it's looking for and index.html page that does not exist ).
    Thank,

    Have you tried
    * Administer the Website and navigating to webserver
    * Go to Index Files
    * Bring index.php to the top of the list
    * Quit and launch Contribute and connect again.
If this does not help, please let me know.

  • Index.html pages in local sub-directories will not load automatically when sub-directory name entered into address field, followed by a forward-slash

I am in the process of designing a website-on-a-CD. In order to make things easier for my clients, I decided to organize this site into local sub-directories with an index.html page in each one. However, when I try to enter the local sub-directory name, followed by a forward-slash, the index page does not open automatically. Instead, I get a raw directory listing that includes the index.html file, and anything else that is present within it. I would like to know if there is any way to force this page to load automatically within Firefox from a local storage medium as it would load from a web-server.

You need to use file:// as the protocol instead of C:/. The latter may never work (C:\ might).
Where is the main HTML located ?
Easiest if to store the images in a sub folder of the location because you can't go back via ../ beyond that root location for security reasons.

  • How can I have a default servlet and an index.html?

    Hi,
I writing a small webapp to test/understand the 2.2 Servlet Spec. I am deploying this as a WAR to Orion, Tomcat and Silverstream.
    The app's name is: "myapp"
My application has an index.html, which is listed as the sole welcome-file in the welcome-file-list element in the app's web.xml.
The interesting thing is that, after adding a default Servlet (<url-pattern>/</url-pattern>), I can no longer access the app's index.html either implicitly or explicitly:
    1. Implicit:
    2. Explicit:
All of these invoke the Default Servlet in all 3 app servers.
Question: How can I have both a default Servlet and an index page?
    Thanks in advance.
    Miles

you can define it in the web.xml file

  • Can folders' index.html contents avoid containing such folders' names within their urls, please?

Could Dreamweaver’s file panel folders (located to the right, within Dreamweaver CS5.5, etc.)  potentially contain index.html files that do NOT share such folders’ actual names within their own urls?
The reason I ask is that I would like to create various index.html sub-directories that will all be linked from yet another index.html subdirectory, for web surfers’ convenience.   It would really help me keep them all organized (for occasional updates' sake) if I could keep them in a folder within Dreamweaver’s file panel that at least resembles that other index.html subdirectory’s name, though.   However, it seems that moving index.html files to such an "alpha" folder inserts that alpha folder’s name into the contained urls, not just its own.   Can this be avoided or worked around, somehow, please?     In case it helps, I have CS5.5 and will have CS6 upon its release date.   Any thoughts, please?

Thanks for the preliminary response.   It would really help me keep index.html files organized (for occasional updates' sake) if I could keep them in a folder within Dreamweaver’s file panel  (to the right) whose name does NOT appear in those individualized urls.
To give you an example of why I'd like to be able to do this, let's say one wants to have a folder named California, and that various index.html files will be linked from the actual California page.   If one wants to update all pages that belong in the California directory, without having to sort through pages that correspond with (for example) Oregon or Arizona that one ALSO maintains, it could be greatly facilitated if such index.html files could be organized into a California file or something whose name is close to it.   If a page is named "Sacramento" then it need not have California in the url.  Indeed, longer urls are less appealing for the purposes of this endeavor.    So in using this concrete example as background, perhaps my initial question makes more sense now?   At any rate, thanks for trying

  • Overview and package frames not present in index.html

I launch the Javadoc tool with:
    javadoc -sourcepath ..\src\ -d %DIR_JAVADOCS% -author -package -use -version %SOURCES% -classpath %CP%
(where the %XXX% are environment variables properly set).
The problem is that the packages frame and overview frame doesnt appear in the resultant index.html
    Also, in thread
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=41&thread=72781
    Doug Kramer says:
"If you supply package names on the command line, links to their
docs should all appear automatically on the Overview page,
which is named overview-summary.html. The -overview flag
merely allows you to add a description to that page."
So, what I have to do to solve this??

This is one of the most commonly-asked questions
I'll bet you are passing in only one package.
    Here's the blurb:
The Javadoc tool will generate either two or three HTML frames, as shown in the
figure below. It creates the minimum necessary number of frames by omitting the
list of packages if there is only one package (or no packages). That is, when you
pass a single package name or source files (*.java) belonging to a single package
as arguments into the javadoc command, it will create only one frame (C) in the
left-hand column -- the list of classes. When you pass into javadoc two or more
package names, it creates a third frame (P) listing all packages, as well as an
      overview page (Detail).
                  |C| Detail |                  |P| Detail |

I am not able to use the ftp export in Muse. When I enter my host, name and password, I get a long interlude of rainbow wheel and finally the message that my ftp host cannot be found. I have verified the name and that it is port 21. I can export to html and use another ftp client to upload (to the same server) but this is tedious and making minor changes is painful. Have you encountered this and found a solution?

    Hi Susan,
In that case I will recommend that you consult a local technician/IT team and see if there is some network connectivity issue with your machine.

  • Index on name and upper(name) ??

    Greetings!
If we have query string search for upper(name) and when index is on 'name' then, is it true that Oracle doesn't use index at all?
also, then what is the impact when we have both name and upper(name) indexed. Thanks,

    William -
I always thought the use of the index, in this case, was more likely not to be used when transforming the column with an UPPER (or similar function).
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14211/sql_1016.htm#sthref1089
The example the OP gave was a typical example cited to the benefits of using a function based index.
What am i missing? Is the optimizer a it smarter in newer versions?
