What is the difference between Framework and Technology?

The term "FrameWork" in Java normally referes to a "container" application which provides support for application-specific plugin classes. For example a web server like Tomcat is a framework which supports Servlets, JSPs etc..
By "Technology" we (or at least Oracle) tend to refer to a partiular set of tools.

The Cubase Essential 5 framework for Mac OS X has been reworked: it has been “de-carbonized” and is now “cocoa-ized”. This is the foundation for a Cubase Mac OS X 64-bit version which is planned at a later stage and is not part of the Cubase Essential 5 release.
That's a huge step, the biggest obstacle to going 64 bit. Who knows when, but they have definitely made a lot of progress. Don't forget, they have also been shipping Cubase and Nuendo as 64 bit apps on windows for a couple years now so they aren't totally new to it. But probably not more than a few months away.
Also, the latest update of Stylus RMX is 64 bit, Trillian will be when it's released, and then Spectrasonics will be using what they've learned from those two to update Omnisphere.
East West said recently that they have a 64 bit version of their PLAY plugin and it's in the beta testing phase now.
There's also an interesting new product called Vienna Ensemble that's a plugin and instrument host that can either run on the same machine or a second (and more) computer via ethernet - it has the ability to run both 32 and 64 bit versions at the same time (hosting both 32 and 64 bit plugins) and send the audio back to either a 32 or 64 bit host. Basically a node for any plugin including sampler instruments, and one that can mix and match 32 and 64 bit plugins.
64 bit audio on mac is on its way, the question is whether logic will support it within the program or if we'll have to use workarounds to take advantage of it.

ESS - ITS Services integration with XSS Framework

Hi,
I have created an Z* scenario for the ESS. All Webdynpro standard iViews that I have customized it is working. Now, I have a ITS service PZ28 (Previous Employers) that was not converted to WebDynpro techonology. I am trying to insert the service into the framework technology but I am having some problems. When I go see the service in the Portals nothing appears, just the tray with the name: XssMenuArea.
Here are the tables that I have customized in the backend:

Just from a quick look here....your server points to ITS but that is not needed since your ITS service will be referenced to the iView which will tell it that information...also....for your resource...
(1) you do not need the URL parameter set to PZ28....this should be done in the iView...that is, you should have created a SAP IAC iview for service PZ28 and then assigned that iview to a page and that page to a role (possibly direct...not good...or through a workset...better).
(2) the URL of the PCD page should be the path when viewing the role down to the page from step #1....so, you will have your role displayed in the content admin/PCD. Then you click the page object to bring up it's properties. Then, copy-and-paste the information for the PCD location over into your config for the resource.
so you should have....
IMG:
area group -> area page -> subarea -> service -> that uses the resource -> that points to portal (ie. the PCD location of the page in the role)
PORTAL:
role -> contains page as referenced above -> contains ITS iview (for PZ28 with system alias to system with ITS defined)
Soooo in all that cumbersome work, you are basically telling your Area page to display the service which is linked to the resource that actually just gives a specific location in the role. When clicked, the URL will "jump" the user over to that part of the role (which of course assumes they will have that role) which will take them right to that specified page. That page has the iView on it that will then display PZ28 (or whatever else).
Yep...a lot of hoops to jump through for something so simple. haha

In addition to what Tapash said, since HTML Quoting is not build on oaf, u won't need oaf code at all in the lines page to implement ur logic.

How to install servlet and jsp on win xp?

I am new in jsp and servlets. I would like to follow some jsp books and examples. The j2eesdk-1_4-dr-windows-eval.exe is already installed on my computer. I can write and run java codes. I downloaded the jsp-2_1-edr-api.zip file from http://java.sun.com. I extracted and moved to dir:\Sun\AppServer\ folder. When I search, I cannot see any jsp.jar file as some documents say, nor servlet.jar. How can I install jsp and servlet on windows xp? Any help? I will be very grateful.

For starters, you would probably have better luck getting an answer on the general Java forums, since this a very general question- it is hard to see how this is specific to the Web Application Framework technology, except of course that it uses JSP and servlets naturally,
But to try to help you here, more information is needed: from exactly where are you do\wnloading the file jsp-2_1-edr-api.zip and what is the product title of this file? I ask this since a general search of sun.com returns no evidence of the existence of this file.
Also, what documents are being referred to here?

Modification of Web Dynpro ABAP ESS application

Hi,
I'm familiar with the modification process of ESS Web Dynpro Java applications using NWDI. However I have to adda button a view in the "Create Expense Report" iView which is a Web Dynpro ABAP application from ERP 6 Ehp3. On the click of this button a pdf report should be shown. The Web Dynpro ABAP application is FITE_EXPENSES.
Can anyone tell me what is the process for modifying ESS WD ABAP code? Do I copy and create a new application and then modify?
I'm not getting any documentation on this on SDN or SAP Help.

     -> Put your application in display mode.
     -> There is button for Enhancement in the tool bar (Spiral shaped).
     -> Press that button and create a new enhancement.
    -> Now add any UI Element you want to add.
     -> In Enhancement Framework we do have some Post Exit and Pre Exit Methods.
    -> Some Enhancement Points are already given by Standard SAP.
   -> You can write the logic there and activate the Enhancement.

One way sync possible?

here my question / problem :
My phone and my computer at work (PC with Lotus Notes), get synched and it works well. I would like to have the same information also on my home iMac - so far so good with iSync. BUT I do not want any changes on my phone, so MERGING or DELETING information on the phone are a no-go for me.
Is there a way, to configure iSynch (or any other Synch software), to just synch one way - e.g. to just read out the present items on my phone and transfer them into the mac.

It is not possible to explicitly control the directional flow of data during a synchronization event using iSync. iSync is simply designed to do one thing during a standard—as opposed to initial—event: to equate the data stored in each application, on each device and on each server, transferring any additions changes and deletions to and from all applications, devices and servers in your synchronization pool.
If you do not want to see changes reflected on your mobile handset when you synchronize, you must simply avoid making any changes at all on your computer to the records stored in iCal and the Address Book. No changes = no changed data to transfer to your handset.
This Apple Developer Note explains the underlying Sync Services Framework technology used to synchronize data in Mac OS X 10.4 or later:

You can see from the description of how this works that if no changes are pushed to the truth by iSync on behalf of iCal and the Address Book, there will no changes pulled from it by iSync on behalf of your mobile handset.

Has anyone here built a front end using the API?

.. and if so, how have you found it? I need to create one sharpish (most likely using the generated JSP pages from JDeveloper)

The assumption above is using the ADF or any Web framework technology it's not that hard to develop. Afterthe post I gave it a try and I was able to list deployed processes and list of instances and their configurations in a nice table format.
But the problem I see is it's not that easy to simulate BPEL PM visual flow, audit trail functionalities which I feel are very useful for trouble shooting. The APIs give you proprietary XML dump and you have to do some sort of XSL transformation to present it in a meaningful way.
Hopefully Oracle addresses this and seperate the Admin and BPEL process auditing/troubleshooting aspects in BPEL PM Console very soon.

Do I need a web service for this?

Very short question but would like to know what options I have! I want to send an XML file to the server and depending on what�s in that XML file I receive another XML file, which contains the result of my query. The reason for this is because I want to use the same exact backend from different user interfaces (example swing and html).
I believe that this can be done only with XML Web Services, but that is because I have only been exposed to that technology!! Is there some other technology? With XML web services you need to have an Application Browser.
I also thought of maybe using Sockets. A connection would be made with that socket, send the XML and wait for the XML result to arrive.
Anyways which option do you people think is best, and in case of Web Services, which framework / technology do you use?

Hi,
There are really a lot of ways to exchange information (in XML) in a client and server setup. As you have suggested, either socket or web service will do.
In my opinion, I would strongly suggest web service.
Reason as follows:
1) web service uses a standard format of exchanging information. Thus it's always a better approach to stick to standards as it will allow portability.
On the other hand, if socket were to use, you have to define your own set of DTD, which implies what whoever wishes to understand your XML data has to have the DTD. This will not be an issue with web service.
2) As technology is moving towards SOA ( Service Oriented Architecture ), which heavily relies on web service, developing your application with web service will allow your application to leverage on the architecture in the future.
3) web service is language/OS independent.
For implementation of web services, a few possible ways:
- Some developer tools has good tools for webservice, for example, weblogic do has some useful libraries.
-Another useful library is the Axis.
Still, the above may not always be the best choice.

Attempting to install JavaEE 5 SDKU1 or SJAS9PE fails

Attempting to install JavaEE 5 SDKU1 or SJAS9PE fails when I finish the "Select Installation Directory". After I select "next", it just sits there. No longer are the buttons active, but when I click the X to close the window, it prompts if I'm sure I want to exit, so it's still somewhat responsive.
The odd thing is, I was able to install it once before, but needed to uninstall so I used the control panel/add/remove programs link to uninstall.
I have uninstalled all versions of Java, then reinstalled. Right now I have JDK6/JRE6 installed, and am trying to install Java EE 5 U1, then SJAS 9PEU1. This is a Windows XP machine.
I looked through the documentation for a "installed files" list, but did not see one. I was wondering if maybe a previous install had added some junk into the registry that might be goofing up the installer now.
I have tried JDK/JRE 1.5u9 as well, with no luck.
Works great on my Solaris machines, of course!

It seems you run into productregistry deadlock issue from the troubleshooting article. Unfortunately, root cause of that one is in underlying installation framework used by Appserver/SDK installers which is external component and fix is not forthcoming until those installers switch to another installation framework technology.
Note that this is in fact exceptional situtation - you will certainly not run into it each and every time you install or uninstall on Windows.

J2EE vs. Ruby on rails

Hi everybody,
I have read interesting article "Move over Ruby on Rails, Java can be concise too" - http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=32723#163395.
"Ruby on rails" (RoR) seems as very interesting framework and people often claims that it's better than J2EE (at least in mentioned article). I'm not so big specialist in J2EE but it's clear that RoR can make some things easier and nicer (I don't have my own experience, I have information from articles only...).
I would like to compare these two frameworks (technologies) in practise so I'm interested in finding corresponding framework or composition of frameworks in Java which could replace RoR.
Could anyone help me?

Ruby on Rails is easier to use than J2EE.according to people who have a monetary interest in making you believe that...
It might be easier to hack together a quick website, but does it scale? Does it perform? How's the security (mind there was a major hole discovered only last week which puts every Rails installation at risk of being completely compromised)?

Development in AS10g like E-Business Suite

Our telecommunication enterprise has paid for E-Business Suite consisting of big set of modules. Our regional department is planning to deploy many workstations working in various modules of E-Business Suite. Then our regional IT department is going to service and customize functionality of E-Business Suite for our special requirements.
On the other hand, now regional IT department have to design and develop for internal use some quite big application based on Oracle technologies including many remote client workplaces.
In order to reduce cost of learning many different technologies for administrators and developers and dealing with only non-obsolete technologies we decide to use in our application only technologies and design patterns that are common to E-Business Suite.
Now we have installed and running Oracle Application Server 10g on Windows 2003 Server and Developer Suite 10g on deveropers' Windows XP Pro. What are technologies we have to learn and use first of all?

Igor, the answer varies depending on the nature of the extensions or customizations you plan to perform on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i.
For example, if you'd like to generate custom analytic end-user reports against Release 11i, you may wish to invest in learning how to create Discoverer 10g workbooks.
Alternately, if you plan to extend existing transactional forms, you'll need expertise in both Oracle Forms and the Oracle Applications Object Library technology (and the associated database design skills).
If you plan to extend existing Release 11i web pages, you'll need to develop skills in Java, XML, and the Oracle Applications Framework technology.
Oracle University has a number of courses on these topics. I would recommend engaging an Oracle Consultant during your initial scope and requirements analysis. Oracle Consulting can do an architectural overview of Release 11i and help identify specific technologies that you'll need for your customizations, and you can arrange for training and additional Consulting help as needed.

One MessageArea in iView in EP

We run several WD applications. Is it possible to have an EP iView which is the common MessageArea for all the WDAs, while the message area in the WD application itself is no longer used.
a) Standalone: WD application with own MessageArea
b) In EP one iView with MessageArea only, but 2 WD applications in other iViews without own MessageArea, but using the iView's one.
I somehow found this should work, but obviously I am wrong or did it wrong. I have written one WDA with a MessageArea and but this in an iView op top of the EP page.
Any hints? Thanks for any support.

Don't get me wrong. What you suggest is an excellent idea and has a nice use case. I will certainly pass this idea onto development via the Product Definition group. I doubt given the current portal framework technology that this would be very easy to implement - given the isolation between iViews on a single page.
However this is something that has been considered already in the NetWeaver Business Client. Because Web Dynpro won't have to render HTML/JavaScript in the future when running in NWBC this becuase much simplier. Each iView within the NWBC sends their messages as just another part of the XML feed to the client. The NWBC already has to extract out the message from the XML and is responsible for the formatting and output (unlike in the browser client for WD). It is much more likely that some consolidation of all messages across inner components in the NWBC could happen. Keep in mind that I am talking about future possibilites - not current capabilities - and at that only speculating about what could be done.
