Franken-mac ... can we do it???

I have some very strange questions about some older macs that I have lying around the house. I use an isight iMacG5 for day to day work and my partner uses an older iBookG4 on his desk.
That leaves our old bondi blue imac (un-upgraded) original specs
and our old iBook G3 lying about.
I would love to be able to use the original imac's speakers and screen as a movie/internet viewer in our public area. Is is possible to pull apart both of these machines and make a franken-mac that uses the iBook keyboard and disk drives and hard drive and all that but drives the screen and speakers of the old iMac? It doesn't have to LOOK pretty or fit into the carapace of the iMac. But would it work? Could it work? Am I completely insane??
let me know! ~kt

I think as Kenichi already mentioned this is a rather involved hardware hack. Not that it couldn't be done as evidenced by the work done on old Color Classics but my first thought would be why....
I skimmed through and noticed someone mentioning Bose speakers in iMacs. I can't say I've heard of that either, but one generation of iMac G3's did incorporate Harmon Kardon speakers and they actually don't sound to bad. Especially if you mate it up to an iSub from Harmon Kardon. I have this in an Indigo iMac G3 350mhz which is a slot loading iMac.
http://www.lowendmac.com/ed/keel/08tk/slot-loading-imacs.html is an interesting little article.
But back to your question, personally I don't think I would try and rip one apart. There might be simpler ways of doing it. First you could upgrade the CPU to a 333 mhz unit if it was a 233, a couple of years ago I bought a lot of iMac cpu's off a seller in the southern US for $20 so these things can be cheap.
Looking at the original Bondi I wonder if you can swap out the CD drive with a DVD drive, the usefulness of this swap will greatly depend on whether the iMac will support DVD playback which a very lame google search didn't answer just now. The reason I mention this is because DVD drives for PC laptops are dirt cheap for example a DVD/RW can be had for $30 that works with Toast and with Apples built in DVD authoring sw in OSX and I suspect you could replace the tray loader in the Bondi with a PC DVD drive.
Plan B, find a cheap used iMac G3 DV which would be a 400 or 500 mhz unit. That should also allow you to upgrade as far as Tiger since it has firewire......
Plan C, instead of gutting the iBook use it's external video output to hook it up to an external monitor..... CRT's are being tossed into the tipper at incredible rates these days. I have three skids at work waiting to go out to a recycler stacked with 3 rows high with 17" and 19"ers.......although personally I would go with a cheap LCD if the screen on the iBook is bad.

Is there a way that iTunes can act as a Radio Alarm Clock?
I have found the radio station I enjoy listening to in the iTunes Radio List. Is there anyway iTunes (and my Mac) can be set to come-on from Sleep mode and start playing that Radio Station at specific times of the day?
Any App or plug-in that does that?
    Many thanks

Turning your Mac into a clock radio.
    1.  In iTunes create a playlist that contains just the radio station you want to wake up to.
    2.  Export the playlist (as .m3u works well).  Get Info on your playlist file and look at the Open With entry to make sure it points to iTunes, VLC or some other app that will stream your station.
    3.  In iCal create an event entry at the time you want to wake up.
    4.  Right (or Control) click on your wakeup event and select Get Info.
    5.  For "alarm" select Open File.
    6.  Now under Open File there will be a place to add the file to open.  It will probably be some default entry (like iCal).  Click on it will allow you to select "other."  Then use the file dialog to select your playlist file.
Your Mac will wake you up at the appointed time.  You don't need to keep iCal running.  If you want to put you Mac to sleep for the night then there is one more thing you need to do.  Open System Preferences to Energy Saver and click on the Schedule button.  Check Start up or wake and set the wake up time to slightly before your iCal alarm time.

    Hello NotAppleSavy,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the computer wont connect to networks. I see you have used network diagnostic. I would recommend that you read this article, there are a lot of other things you can do in this article that may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Downloaded mavericks for one mac can i use the same download to install on another mac

I have downloaded for 12 hours initial installation on one mac for mavericks, and all installed successfully. Rather than download again for another mac, can I use the same download and copy on to the other mac..and if yes, where will I find it?

All you need to do is go to System Preferences > App Store and uncheck the automatic install of updates box, then download the Mavericks installer, and copy to a flash drive.  You will need a flash drive of 8 G B or more since the installer is around 5.3 GB.  The installer will be in Finder > Applications.  You can then copy that flash drive installer to the Applications folders in all the Macs you have that are capable of running Mavericks, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842.
When the installer runs, the last step in the installtion is for the installer to erase itself.  So makng a copy before the installer runs is essential if you want to avoid redownloading.
Installing from the same installer does not cause problems for Macs on the same network.

  • How many macs can I install Logic studio on?

Ok so i recently bought my first ever iMac.
And i installed logic studio on it, but I am considering a Mac Pro because honestly; i love my iMac but i kind of just want this imac for 'personal' things (movies, music, family photos, videos ect.)
    and I want a Mac Pro just for logic and any other PRO apps I buy later on. So i was wondering if anyone can help me with the question i have;
How many macs can I install Logic studio on?

It's in your Logic Studio license agreement:
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you. This License does not allow the Apple Software to run on more than one computer at a time.

You have to sign out completely in System Preference>iCloud (click 'Sign out') on a Mac, or Settings>iCloud on an iOS device (click 'Delete account' - this will not delete the account from the server). Then sign in with the new password.
Your iCloud data will disappear from your Mac or device when you sign out but will reappear when you sign back in.

  • I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos

I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos and say that I need to upgrade my I photo to a newer version. The old mac has no more support from apple in software update so I am not sure where I should go from here. can I use new soft ware with the old mac

The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)

  • If I purchase a Mac can I convert my PC files saved on a backup to my Mac?

If I buy a Mac, can I convert my PC files, folder, saved on a backup to my Mac

Did you use a backup program?  The backup program could have saved the data in some funny way.
If you copied them  with Windows copy  & paste or drag & drop,  you will be able to read the files on the mac.  You can run Windows on the new Macs.
What type of files are we talking about?  Microsoft has office for the Mac. Word, Excel, Powerpoint files are supported.

  • Is it possible for a mac to run across a Windows based server such as in a school, and still be able to access all networked folders? I have been told that macs can only read down a certain number of folders

Is it possible to run a mac on a windows based server? We have a server based on Windows 7 in our school, and our techies are reluctant to let me buy a mac as they say macs can only read a number of folders deep, which would preclude me from accessing shared folders on our servers. Is this true, and is there a way round this? I would eventually like to get a suite of macs, but because all our resources are on the server, I have to be able to access them.
    Thanks for any help,
    Mike

I have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong.  I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties.   And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can.

  • Where do I put a workflow so that all users on the Mac can access?

Where do I put a workflow so that all users on the Mac can access it from Automator?
Also. why does the search pattern "users" AND "workflows" return results whitch math "and" (lowercase)? I thought "AND" (in caps) is for boolean searches.

    Hi, Mike.
    1. You wrote: "Where do I put a workflow so that all users on the Mac can access it from Automator?"Either:
    • Macintosh HD > Users > Shared
    • Macintosh HD > Applications (if you're the Admin user).
All users (unless restricted by Parental Controls) have access to those folders.
    2. You wrote: "Also. why does the search pattern "users" AND "workflows" return results whitch math "and" (lowercase)? I thought "AND" (in caps) is for boolean searches."It's unclear as to what search facility you are referring, and a bit hard to follow given the spelling errors in your question.
Do you mean Discussions search? If so, have you reviewed the Search Tips? They're also available from the search page, where one can click "Tips" under the Search Terms field.
    Good luck!
