Frantic-Photo's not in Iphoto but in iphoto library folder

Yes, i did something very stupid, but i went into my iphoto folder through my hardrive, and to "clean up" that folder, i dumped all the stray files into a simgle folder. Then i checked iphoto and there was nothing there. Nearly passing out, i went back to the iphoto files through my hardrive and all the files were still there, so i tried to dump them all back into the intial iphoto library folder. I checked iphoto again, and still there was nothing there. So i am stuck, i havn't lost my photo's but i can't see them in photo. If there is a way to get them back, and maybe maintain my filing system in iphoto itself that would be great.

Hi, I have a similar problem to Richard's.
Last night I unwrapped my brand new Lacie external drive and thought, how difficult could it be? I installed it and then immediately backed up my iphoto and imusic libraries and other documents. Then I set about getting rid of files on my Powerbook, which was running out of room.
After first carefully checking ot make sure that iphoto could read the photos on the Lacie drive, I 'noticed' that in my Finder window, I had a pictures file in the sidebar, as well as in my user directory. It seemed to be the exact same file, with the exact same amount of data. I thought it was a duplicate! So I trashed -- not only that, I 'secure' trashed -- the extra pictures file in my user directory, along with other files. I had about 18,000 files chugging through the trash. After about 1,000 files were gone I got cold feet and stopped the trash operation. That's when I retried iphoto, only this time there were no pictures in the library. I tried to get iphoto to point to the backup files on the Lacie, and it would still not show any photos.
The good news is, I know the photos are there. I can see individual files on the Lacie. The bad news is, I think i've really screwed up my finder window on my Powerbook-- the pictures file no longer exists. I made it again, and put it in my user directory, but these new file folders are lacking the cute little photo icon (ditto for itunes, but i figure i'll solve the iphoto problem first).
So: now I have a new pictures file in my user directory on my powerbook; I have copied all the items from the Lacie backup picture file into the picture file on my powerbook. And iphoto still can't see the photos. A few times iphoto has asked me to choose the library -- i've tried pointing to the backup library on the Lacie, but it won't read it -- says there is some sort of problem. (I am thinking maybe it is because I included an apostrophe in the Lacie Drive's name? I'm afraid to rename the Lacie Drive because I don't know how to do it without wiping the backup.)
In the meantime I'm trying to import photos from the old library. It is chugging away. 9,000 photos total. Problem is, my iphoto library was heavily edited. (I had deleted bad shots and had only about 5k shots). Will I now have to re-delete bad shots, re-crop, and add in all new comments? That would kill me.

Blank thumbnails in iPhoto; photos (zero KB) in iphoto library folder?

Upon opening iphoto recently; 90% of my photo's (2,500) appear as blank/white thumbnails. If I select one of these photo's it gives the proper photo info (name, file size, etc..) but no photo. When I check the iLibrary folder, these same photos display zero KB. I have attempted a rebuild that was unsuccessful. I have not messed around with the iLibrary folder and am confused as why this happened. Any thoughts/ideas on how to fix??? Thank you.

You can follow the instructions above to create a new library and import the images from the old library to see if you get all your images back.
You can first try this tip from Old Toad:
There is a way you can recover your library. Here's what I developed and it worked for me. But make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder beforehand just in case:
How to recover those photos lost due to renaming in the Finder1 - do a search of just the iPhoto library folder with the following criteria:
File name contains ".jpg" (or .psd) and File size is less than 1 KB. (You can just do a search for File size less than 1 kb but do not delete the other zero sized files that are of a non image type).
That will find all of those zero sized files that were created when iPhoto couldn't fine the originals.
2 - move those zero sized image files to the trash.
3 - now delete those "bad" photos from the iPhoto library using the normal method within iPhoto (if you don't they will be recovered every time you do a library rebuild with the "recover orphaned photos" option selected).
4 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and when the rebuild menu comes up select the last option, "Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder".
This will recover those renamed files and put then in a new roll. The only downside is that their titles in iPhoto will be "Roll xx-1, etc. You can do a Get Info on them, find the actual file name and change the title so they are the same.
So it can be done with a little work.
The only way to rename files that have already been imported into iPhoto is to export them to the desktop, rename them there and then reimport. Once imported you can delete the original set.

Photo could not read iPhoto Library in NTFS

So far there is no problem for me to write and read iPhoto library into NTFS external hard disk. However, when I try to open the iPhoto library in Photo, it show the volume format is not supported ? How could it be like it can support iPhoto but could not support Photo ?

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). That you can write to the disk doesn't matter. You can also write to several other disk formats, but having the Library on an inappropriately formatted disk risks library corruption and data loss. Later versions of iPhoto would not allow creating a library on these disks, and neither will Photos. You need to move the Library to an appropriate location.

Photos did not import iPhotos library

When I first launched Photos it did not import my old iPhotos library. How do I get Photos to import the old iPhotos library, there does not appear to be an option to do so. I can hold down the option button and launch Photos and choose the old iPhotos library but it just opens it and does not import it into the main new Photos library.

Ok, here is what I had to do.
open Photos while holding the Option key
select the old iPhotos library, Photos will now do it's conversion
after converting close Photos (this step may not be needed, but it's what I did)
open Photos, making sure it's using the just converted library (you can rename the library if you want to in Finder)
select Preferences->General->Use as System Photo Library
Everything seems to be ok now.

Images not in "~/Pictures/iPhoto Library" folder not properly handled

One of the features I was grateful for in iPhoto 6 is the ability to NOT import photos into the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library" folder. This meant I could use iPhoto to view and edit photos without duplicating a folder structure I use for my photo files.
Unfortunately, I have now discovered that any program that attempts to access photos through the iPhoto API can see the previews for these images, but can not actually access the images. This means the "Desktop & Screen Saver PrefPane" can see the iPhoto previews, but fails to load an image for the Desktop (or Screen Saver). NOTE: It does appear that iMovie does see the photos properly, but other non-iLife portions of the MacOS don't.
Anyone got a fix for this? I suspect it is a bug in the iPhoto sharing API, but I am hoping someone might have a fix.

I don't think there is an API for iPhoto, or at least I cannot find it anywhere. Any integration with iPhoto is purely a hack.
If you can find documentation for an API, please let me know.

If you're using iPhoto as your email client a sent version is not created. You need to BCC yourself in order to get a copy.
The better solution is to use Mail as your email client in conjunction with Gmail. This will give you a sent copy, better access to your contacts and, if so desired, photo templates to use via Mail's stationary feature.

When I try to upload pictures onto iPhoto, it shows up, but it won't let me import my pictures. And when I want to close iPhoto it says "Photos being uploaded to iPhoto library, please wait to finish uploading," but I am not uploading anything.

Photos deleted from iPhoto, but still in Library folder

Strange behavior in iPhoto : let's say I imported 100 photos. Then, in iPhoto, deleted 80, keeping 20. Emptied trash in iPhoto. Then emptied Trash in Finder.
Let's say the "_DSC1234.JPG" photo was among deleted files. When searching "_DSC1234.JPG" in Spotlight, I find it in the "Master" folder of the "iPhoto Library" folder (Photothèque in French).
I've got a lot of photos deleted, but kept in Library, Not good for privacy, not good for hard drive space.
For exemple, I find 514 ".NEF" photos in the iPhoto searchbox. But when searching in the iPhoto LIbrary folder with Spotlight for files with ".NEF" in their names, I find 1048 ! No duplicates, no previews or "faces" (hey are in JPEG), but photos I deleted, before emptying iPhoto and Finder trash !!
Rebuilding Library didn't help.
I'm using a user account not allowed to administrate the computer. Maybe a link ?

Strange behavior again, with the original library : If I select NO event and use the menu Information, I've got 14.634 photos. If I select all events, I've got 15.760 photos. How can I have more photos in all events than in my Library ??????
Check, if you have hidden photos.
File > New Smart Album, with a rule: Photo is hidden
In my iPhoto Library the "Hidden" flag accounts for the difference in the Photos count between selecting all events and no events.
Make sure, "View > Hidden Photos" is enabled in the View menu, so you can recognize hidden photos by the X.

My iphoto library folder with files of my pictures is missing from the pictures folder, only the application icon remains. I have read through similar discussions but have not managed to fix the problem with the recommended solutions. Can anyone help?

I have a Macbook Pro with iphoto '08 running on Mac OS X version 10.5.8. I used to be able to go to my pictures folder on my HD and access my pictures via that iphoto library folder. There used to be a small arrow next to the iphoto icon with all the albums then listed within the folder (to the right). That arrow is now gone and all I have is the iphoto application icon which just reopens iphoto when I click on it, but I want to be able to access the data files. Somehow I do have files btwn 2008 and 2009 but it hasn't created these since then...Could someone please help me to restore this ability? I have read other similar posts but they seem to be related to lost data all together and I do luckily have all my pictures in iphoto still. I just can't access them in the pictures folder which means I can't access them on my external hard drive. I am now out of start up disc space somehow so I figured I had to delete some albums (I have 12,090 pictures) and do have them backed up but want to make sure I can go back for them when I need them. I did export all the pictures to a folder on the hard drive but it is all 12,090 in one long list with only numbers as names and not in any order, this will be a nightmare to access later! Please help! Thank you!

You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
That indicates that that is your library. Put it in your Pictures folder if it already isn't there and make sure it's named "iPhoto Library". It should look like this:
Now launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select that library to open. If you get that same message close iPhoto and try the following;
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.

As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device." I hadn't touched the camera. The message came by itself. I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit. Opening it back up, the pictures were gone. Can somebody help me?

What version of iPhoto are you running? Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Photos have been found in the iPhoto Library folder that were not imported

Whenever I start iPhoto, I get an error that says:
5 Photos have been found in the iPhoto Library folder that were not imported. Would you like to import them now?

If I say no, the dialog goes away but you get it the next time you start iphoto. If I say yes, then iphoto tries to import something (I don't know what) and hangs. I've let it run for two hours and nothing ever gets imported. What's worse is that every time I try to let it import, it increments the number of pictures it thinks is missing. The first time it said 3 photos. I let it attempt an import and it froze. The next start it claimed there were 4. It's up to 5 now and I've figured out that letting it try to import whatever it thinks is missing is a bad idea.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Any suggestions?

Photos not in iPhoto Library

I know that I can tell iPhoto not to import photos into the Library, but leave them where they are. I thought that I changed this feature, but there are about 100 photos or so that are not in the library and iPhoto will open the drive on my file server where they are located every time I launch iPhoto.
1) How can I tell what photos these are (there are almost 3,000 files in my library?
2) How can I bring them into the library?

If iPhoto still has working links to those photos you can useAliasHerder on the Originals folder of your iPhoto library to find and replace the alias files with the original files.

I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Launch PSE Expert Mode and go to:
Photoshop Elements Editor >> Preferences >> Saving Files (tab)
Set the drop-down dialog
On First Save : Save Over Current File
Click OK.
When you have finished editing in PSE use Cmd+S to save (not Save As)

I am not able to open iPhoto, when I have used the iPhoto Library Manager, I get the message that "the iPhoto Library folder could not be found" Help!

Help! I can't open the iPhoto! I have os x 10.5.8 and I have tried using the iPhoto Library Manager only to find out that the folder for the iPhoto Library could not be found.
I have also tried the Fix #1 from the user Old Toad who said to delete the preference file :com.appleiPhoto.plist - I could do that, but I couldn't figure out how to delete iPhoto's cache fie, Cache.db because I couldn't find it? I'm not sure how to find the file by it's directory path name of HD/User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto .
Help is very much appreciated!

Download and use Find Any File to search for "Library6.iPhoto". It's a file that is present in every iPhoto library. If you don't find one on your hard drive then your library has gone missing entirely.
Another thing you can try is to use the Search For - All Images feature in the Finder window to see if you can see any of your photos.
That will tell you if they are on your hard drive but somewhere other than the library.
What do you see when you insert the DVD into the optical drive? Can you open it and any folders on the disk? If the disk is titled iPhoto Library then open the disk, the the iPhoto Library folder and finally the Originals folder. Check the subfolders to see if your photos are there.
Your original photo files will be in the Originals subfolders.
