Freakish MX440 T8X problems

Okay chaps, maybe one of you can give me some clues here...
I bought two of these cards from eBuyer, and built two PCs using them. The only difference was the first one had Win XP, the second had 98SE... and didn't work properly!
Now, I know I'm a luddite using 98SE, but please bear with me. The symptoms were as follows: no reporting of card pre-POST (seemed pretty weird to start with), then when I installed the supplied drivers and restarted I was unable to change the resolution to more than 640x480 @ 16 colours. Anything else caused a double-restart and reset them again, plus a message saying I had the wrong display settings.
PC spec is Asus A7N8X-X mobo, Athlon XP2500, Crucial 256MB PC2700, Seagate 7200.7 80GB.
Just to check, I stuck it in my PC which is a creaky old P3-550 in an Abit BX-something board, and I got very similar results.
Then (there's more!) I took it to work, and tried it in two PCs with Gigabyte GA-7DXE mobo, XP2000 and Crucial PC2100, one with Win 2kPro SP4, the other with 98SE. Both had InnoVision GeForce 2's in originally.
They both worked!!! Damn! But still not quite right - the 98SE one recognised it as an InnoVision MX440-8 and seemed to work okay, but still no pre-POST message and the screen flickered REALLY badly each time the setting changed on boot up. The one on Win2k reset itself to basic VGA settings and then seemed to be okay once I ran the MSI install utility and cranked up the resolution, but again, no pre-POST identification and when I tried to select the nVidia menu on the display settings I got a nasty error message and there was nothing in the menu.
I'll stop boring you all now, but I'm trying to work out if the card really is flaky, or if it's just me. I build quite a few PCs and have never seen the like before!

I'm beginning to agree with m'learned colleague Kingfisher about eBuyer. In fact, I sent the tale of my woes to Mike Magee at the Inquirer, and since he published it there have been hordes of others agreeing with me.

What a shame - they're very cheap, but without customer service I think I'll just have to use someone who gives a damn in future, even if it's a little more expensive.
I did get the latest drivers from the nVidia site, and it seems to have fixed things - but why would MSI ship a card with blatantly defective drivers? It's not like it's a cutting-edge product or anything. (Okay, I'm just toying with the smilies now, sorry).
Still seems very slow in booting, and a bit twitchy overall - I've built other similar systems and with a clean 98SE install it should do the basics (at least startup and shutdown) like greased cow dung off a teflon shovel. I wonder if the mobo's sick... but hey, that's an Asus, so not something to be discussed here!

KM2M and MX440-T8X (problem with AGP)

Hi every one,
I'm new to the forum... from Chile.
I recently bought a KM2M motherboard and I read in the User's Manual that the AGP port goes from 2X to 4X... BUT... if you connect to it a 8X video card with correct drivers, it would run at 8X (KM2M Quick User's Guide pg. 3-14).
So, I bought a MX440-T8X (MSI 8935)... but the AGP port runs only at 4X!!!!
I installed all the drivers properly and updated them at MSI homepage.
What else can I do??? Has anyone suffer the same problem???

MX440-T8X Problems: My Experience

I just upgraded my oldest computer with a new MSI motherboard and this video card. It seemed to work fine at first, when I put it on a recent monitor at work. When I took it home, though, and hooked it to my crummy old Packard Bell monitor...it flipped out, crashed the computer and it rebooted.
This will hopefully help some people who've had trouble.
Some tech stuff...the motherboard is an MSI K7LV (I think...it isn't in front of me right now). 256 megs of memory, Athlon 2200 1.6 gHz processor. I took the precaution of putting a tiny fan on the VGA chip next to the motherboard, since I'd heard the board has a heat problem. (The side of the case has a 120-volt AC cooling fan mounted on it, a legacy of the PC Chips board I previously had in it.) This is not a system for "stunting," just something run very conservatively, no overclocking or nonsense like that.
The crash in Windows XP Pro indicated that the video card was the probable cause. Among the weirder symptoms; in Safe Mode, the video had leftover pixels scattering across the screen whenever the mouse was moved, and the pixels were blocky with nearly unreadable text.
I went to the BIOS screen of the motherboard and reduced the VGA memory aperture to 32 megabytes. Still no preventing the crash. I made sure the memory was running at the proper speed, not trusting the "auto" setting. Still crashed.
I decided to upgrade to the newest available drivers for both motherboard and card. I eventually got through to the web site (which was being upgraded...great timing on my part). Thank God for my Macintosh! I also downloaded the latest Live Update utility.
Windows would not upgrade the drivers from the downloaded files in the normal fashion, so I tried Live Update. It took forever to get Live Update to work on my rebuilt system. The video card kept crashing. It took about twenty restart cycles before I got it all done. But I managed to redo the BIOS and Drivers for the video card, and the motherboard's VGA drivers as well, via Live Update.
After doing all that - surprise! Everything has worked fine. The machine has operated 24 hours straight with no problems. Again, I haven't "really" stressed the system by running 3D games or anything. And it looks like the old Packard Bell monitor can't do high-res, so that may get changed out sometime. But the system is working.
The moral for you folks: First, upgrade the BIOS and drivers of the video card to the latest available. If your system crashes before the download and installation takes place, try to run it conservatively; reduce the clock speed of the memory and run in low-resolution to see if that keeps the system working for the download to occur.
This isn't a cure-all. However, if you've done everything else right, and you're still getting crashes, try this before you take a sledgehammer to the whole works. Who knows? It might work.

MX440 T8X Bios Problem

I have problem with my VGA Bios! I have MS GeForce MX440 T8X and I flashed VGA Bios with MX420 Bios
Now I need Bios for MX440 but I can´t it download
with live update I only can download version 4.18.20.07.23 Can you tell me where I can find another BIOS ?

Control panel problem w/ mx440-t8x

hi.
i have purchased a mx440-t8x 64 Mb DDR 8X (support agp 4x) and installed it on MBB asus a7v (agp 2x/4x), 750 MHz, 256 Mb RAM, 40 Gb HDD, OS w98se. but when i install msi vga driver from original cd-rom, control panel don't work and say "explorer: program will be interrupted" and the control panel window close after. PLEASE, if someone knows how i can make this work, please say me.

Not all audio formats are supported by the MPEG-2 Playback Component.

QuickTime Pro doesn't edit "playback formats" (like MPEG 1 or 2) so you won't see any edit options on these files.
You'll need some third party software to convert your MPEG-2 files into QuickTime formats (DV Stream is best for preserving quality) if you wish to edit.

MX440 - T8X Can't get the card over 2X

I have an MSI MX440 - T8X 64mb DDR vga card. (upto 8X agp)
MSI 694T - Pro Motherboard. (upto 4X agp)
Pentium 3 1Ghz.
512mb memory.
I have installed uptodate bios for motherboard and vga card.
Up to date via 4in1 chipset drivers. (and sound drivers) v.449
tried latest Nvidia drivers and latest MSI vga drivers.
Put "auto" for agp speed in bios setup. (also tried on 4X)
no overclocking at all.
Somehow i had 4X in agp speed on display properties before i upgraded
the bios and drivers.
Can't fluke it out again though...
Please help... It's a shame to have the extra speed and not be able to use
it. (also can you usually test agp on dxdiag?.. i don't have the test button
on there just Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D)

Unfortunately no one from MSI reads these threads, we are all users helping one another.
You mentioned that you flashed the BIOs on the VGA card, VGA cards are not like motherboards and they generally don't require flashing unless there is an exact reason and the manufacturer clearly states the benefit of doing so. I constantly see users using live update to do this and it can often lead to problems.

Ok, Did you save the original BIOS for the VGA card? Try flashing it back to the original one.

MX440-T8X MS-8895-010 64bit or 128bit?

I am looking at getting the MX440-T8X MS-8895-010 (green PCB, no fan).

I bought a Gainward MX440 the other day (*gasp*) and it is only has a 64bit memory width (even though the supplier said it was 128bit).
From many results I've seen 128bit is a huge improvement over 64bit.
The only reason I bought the Gainward over MSI is because it listed the width as 128bit and the MSI one didn't say.
Problem is I don't know how to tell if the MX440-T8X is 64 or 128bit memory width. On the MSI page it says "Supports 128-bit DDR, 64-bit DDR, and 32-bit DDR SDRAM"... well that doesn't help at all.
Is there any other way to tell? I can only exchange the card once so I can't afford to mess up.

The GF4 you are talking is 128 bit width. The FX 5200 you say is 128 bit width too. The only difference with the 8907 which comes with cooler and red PCB is the cooler itself and the software, and the price. Also, in some versions of the 8907, this card comes with monitoring stuff and the green versiond does not.

MX440 T8X + Clocking speeds

I have recently bought a MX440 T8X card and want to know what the following means:
Memory clock = 405 mhz
Core clock = 250 mhz
When I set these settings to higher speeds the card seems to preform better. However, does this count as "overclocking" and is this safe? What is the maximium a MX440 T8X is sussposed to do?

The memory clock is the frequency of the graphics card's memory, very simmilar to your pc's memory (like in DDR400 runs at 400MHz, your cards memory runs at 450MHz). The core clock is the actual GPU's frequency, just as your CPU's speed
If you increase the clock speeds of these items, you are essentially overclocking your graphics card. Overclocking your graphics card is safe, provided.it's done in a small margin. The safest settings will probably be below 10% of the cards origional speed, however make sure your card runs relativelly cool, and don't overclock too high as it might cause overheating, corruption in games, crashing or damage the card permanently.

MX440-T8X screen orange'ish?

I just installed the MX440-T8X and when I boot up I see what should be white text that it is now all orange'ish.
The whole screen has a orange tone.
Obviously this is now right so I ask is this common when a card is faulty.
What voltage does this card need since I can't find the info on the site or any doc's in the box.
My mobo only supports 1.5v 2x/4x

Nope that is not the case as I tried 2 monitors and then put my old video card back in and everthing is fine. I also then tired the card on another system with a older Aopen ak72 mobo and still the exact same orange'ish ting. So in totaly 3 monitors and 2 different mobo's.
So I am going to have to assume the card is faulty.

Cooler for GeForce4 Mx440 T8X

I bought a GeForce4 MX440 T8X las week, but I saw taht it's has not got a cooler.
That is right or I need to buy it?

You mean it just has a heatsink without a fan ?
If that is what you mean it's normal, you don't need to add anything to it.
If it has no cooling at all (bare nVIDIA chip) return it as it should come with a cooling solution.
This heatsink is usually used on MSI MX440 cards:

G-force4 MX440-T8X tv-out troubles

i have just bought G-force4 MX440-T8X from 4 days and i have excellent 3d games and movies eevery thing works perfect .
but when i try to use the tv-out throw the pin cable no the s-video i got the welcom screen of the MB and in the OS menu ( because i use win98 se and xp ) i got black and white lines then when i login to windows XP i get the black welcom screen then when i go in to weindows XP i got black and white lines .
i have update the vga bios and now i got in every things black and wjite lines no any output .
i used the liveupdate 2
and nividia driver that came with the cd .

Problems with MX440-T8X

Having problems running any 3D stuff with the video card - even the 3D flower screen saver doesn't run smooth. As for 3D games, a message comes up stating "Can not create direct 3D device". As for the system, latest drivers are loaded and the system consists of:

It does not sound like you have your Video Drivers Properly loaded. I would load either the MSI Drivers from the website or get the nVidia Detonator4 Drivers from the nVidia Website.

Gf4 mx440-t8x texture problems?

I have GF4 and on directx display some textures (their edges) are not displayed properly. I tried nvidia divers 45.23, 52.16, 53.03. I am useing Win 2000. Any sugestions, or sould I post my system specs?

MX440-T8X Monitor shut down

I have a MX440-T8S running on a Epox 8RDA+ motherboard with Windows XP home. I have all the latest drivers, bios's, and patches installed for the above items.
My monitor is a 4 year old Sony GDM-400PS. My monitor will not power down properly, when I use "Turn off monitor" in the power options of XP. It will power down, when I turn off the computer or use system standby.
Sony does not offer any current drivers for this monitor. I found an old ".inf" file for windows 2000 from Driver Guide. This gives the proper refresh rates for the monitor.
I have searched every resource I can find for information on this problem without success.
Any help will be appreciated.
