Free alternative to imovie?

I just realized imove is gone from my computer, and it can't be downloaded for free anymore. My installer disc is scratched. Where can I download any type of software so that I can record movies with my built in laptop cam? I googled and googled, and can only find free pc programs. I don't want to pay for it. only gonna use it once.

Thank you for that link. At last I have a method for capturing DV video on my Mac Mini.
iMovie HD has consistently refused to recognise my camera ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=454859&tstart=0 )

I had a look at Hyperengine AV, a free Mac video
editing software that has an non-standard way of
constructing your movie (ie: sort of free-style with
no actual tracks) but allows multiple tracks of
video, audio, text etc - worth a look, even to do a
few things that iMovie can't do - like multiple video
tracks.

    I would like to do,
simple photo editing: Resize into 4'X6', change contrast and brightness, crop, etc.
simple video editing: crop small videos
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Since when is updating your software a bad thing?
When the Software Maker mucks up and pushes out a bad update. It happens. Some folks on here had their Faces processes bunged up by an update, others have graphics issues induced by upgrading to 10.6. These things happen to every software manufacturer at some time or other. And that's just two current examples. It is impossible to test every bit of software on every concievable hardware and software scenario.
I agree there should be an on/off switch, but I do think that ppl are stubborn when it comes to updating their software. I think that this is meant to benefit the vast majority of users who don't bother to update their software, than the minority who do.
And that's where forums like this are invaluable. Before you apply an update you can come here and see if other folks have an issue and then decide for yourself if you want to apply the update.
Unless, that is, you use Picasa (or Chrome, or their Search Utility). In these cases you specifically give Google the right to update the software on your machine with whatever they think fit whenever they think fit. And you cannot install Picasa without agreeing to this.
    Correct. Moving along...
Why on earth would a software maker want this unlimited access to your Machine?
They're not getting "unlimited access" to my/your/anyone's machine. They're updating a piece of software installed on your machine. You agreed to let them update the software when you installed it--this is hardly a bad thing letting the developer update their software.
Don't believe me? Read the EULA or see here:
    http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Picasa/thread?tid=27117d0828181bf3&hl=en#a ll
This is a forum link, not a direct link to the EULA. The EULA is in the software upon installing it, and on this link:
    http://picasa.google.com/intl/en_US/web/tos.html
Other oddities when in that Licence agreement:
You give Google unlimited rights to use your images as they think fit:
By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.
Correct. I've read the Picasa EULA and your quote is correct, yet incomplete. The EULA also states....
"You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services." << In other words, Google is stating, clearly, that you own the copyright to all of your content and Google is not trying to take that way from you.
....it is very clear what is considered"content" and what is "services". You do not give up any rights to your content, period. The quote you mention above has more to deal with the online portion of the Picasa software, not with the Desktop app itself--it'sunder the Picasa EULA under sec. 1.1 (the very, very top), as stated...
+1.1 "Your use of Google's products, software, services, and _web sites_ _(referred to collectively as the "Services" in this document and excluding any services provided to you by Google under a separate written agreement)_ is subject to the terms of the legal agreement between you and Google.+
Now, when you read it up close, it is saying that anything you transmit to Picasa that is public may be used in the front page advertising (just like Flickr does, _see below_). Moreover, they put this in the EULA...
+In addition, by submitting, posting or displaying Content _which is intended to be available to the general public_, you grant Google a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to reproduce, adapt, distribute and publish such Content for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting Google services. _Google will discontinue this licensed use within a commercially reasonable period after such Content is removed from Picasa Web Albums._ Google reserves the right to refuse to accept, post, display or transmit any Content in its sole discretion.+
    Here's Yahoo/Flickr's EULA....
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/utos/utos-173.html
+Yahoo! does not claim ownership of Content you submit or make available for inclusion on the Yahoo! Services. However, with respect to Content you submit or make available for inclusion on publicly accessible areas of the Yahoo! Services, _you grant Yahoo! the following worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license(s), as applicable_+
If you read either of them, they are both telling you the *exact same thing*--make it public, we'll use it. You can post to either service as private or unlisted, but what's the point? Plus, they are not going to use anything that is not intended for the general public (as Google's EULA specifically states) for their own advertising.
I think ppl have this misconception that Google is going on your computer, ripping your photos out from under you, and showing your kid's 4th birthday party photos all over Google Ads. Bottom line, it is only saying that if you make something Public, it's possible that it will end up as part of a gallery advertisement just as it would on a Google or Yahoo Image search.
Perhaps you're a trusting soul and I'm a jaded cynic. But I wouldn't give that right to anybody.
Hey, don't get me wrong....I've got my tin foil hat right here but there is a lot of misinformation out there and ppl take things out of context. Plus, if you think Google's EULA is "scary", read Facebook's EULA sometime. I can sooner understand people's concern over privacy than I do over the concern over copyright.

  • An affordable alternative to iMovie?

is there an affordable alternative to iMovie? I do not need anything as professional as Final Cut but would like more effects than are offered in iMovie08 (since they took some of the stuff away from the previous version)

iMovie version 6 (available free to iLife 08 users)?
QuickTime Pro? A powerful authoring, editing and conversion tool ($30).
    Final Cut Express?

is there a free alternative to indesign that anyone can recommend or someway of me getting it from a windows to a mac?

No. I have seen nothing even close to InDesign in the free department. You could install Windows in bootcamp on your Mac and install it there.

  • Can't upload free version of iMovie

When I try to download free version of iMovie, iPhoto, etc. it goes from free to install to
A moving circle and quickly back to free. Why will
    It not download?

Well, you can't upload because you don't upload iTunes.  Now that this has been clarified, what do you mean it synced to a previous version?
Syncing does not cause media to disappear off the device unless you are syncing to a new computer/library that the device has never synced to before.

  • Here's A Free Alternative To After Effects!

I frequently hear friends talking about how useful After Effects is in conjunction with video editing apps such as Premiere, FCE and FCP but must admit I am pretty clueless as to what can actually be done.
Anyway, if you wanted to give AE a try but couldn't afford the price, I am told that Blender is a viable, free alternative.

this is a 'ready made' 3D mesh you get on some .. StarWars fanatics sites
they re-create the whole stuff from SW in 3D-data.. my app is called Carrara, and afair, it cost as a special offer (old version) ~49$.. with a strong €€€ a fortune. the GUI is hillarious (but less than Blender), many many presets.. e.g. the 'space' you see; the planet later was changed into an 'Earth' (see link below).
in Carrara you have to add 'paint' and 'surfaces'.. quite easy.. that hoover bike, my son rides on is basicly a jetski.. with some 'thrusters' added etc.
what costs a lot of time is animating parts, as a droid lifts his arm etc... and rednering times..phew.. mostly over night.
mostly, I simple done keyframe animations in FCE; an excellent trick: let the 3D app render a semi-transparent drop shadow.. that adds a lot of 'realism'.. as in the 'landing' scene.. that is the actual park nearby, where my son like to sleigh in winter.. and our church, etc.pp.
here's another leftover from this project, another 'test' .. which reminds me to clear my 'Homepage'...-
in the final movie, you can even see my son sitting in that X-wing (or whatever it is called...) - a simple photo as 'surface' on some cubical inside the fighter...-
.. you can spend months on such project.. I did

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Has anyone tried MacX Free DVD to iMovie Converter?

I want to convert a DVD (non copyright) to iMovie so I can play it on my iPhone.
I was thinking of trying MacX Free DVD to iMovie Converter, has anyone tried this?

Just gave it a go and it is very good (used sparingly) Takes a while to render out though. Tons of variations also available in the effects settings - and it is free - no watermark even.

Are there free alternatives to Flex Data Services? YES I KNOW

Me too. A few stumbles but it really was easy to use.....
Only drawback is would like to easily secure the "service

  • Free alternative to parallels

I just downloaded vmware fusion. I did a couple of searches but did not find a whole lot of talk about it. I think it is great, but I want to get the full potential out of it. Is anyone else out there using it. What do you do? I do love the drag and drop. That is very useful, but now I just have to get my windows activated somehow without my COA. Got rid of my PC and left the COA on the bottom of it.

I've got a lot of experience with virtualization and emulation projects, and have been using them in my daily work for years.
Keep an eye out for deals on Parallels - they are aggressively marketing it right now, you can often find it as low as $20 after rebates. It's worth the price, even at full retail ($79), but the deals make it even more attractive.
VMWare Fusion pricing will most likely be in line with their other desktop products - around $200. If you need the extra features that it offers, it may be worth the extra price; however, Parallels provides adequate features, decent performance, etc at a fraction of the price. The most notable differences, at least at the present time, between the two products are:
    * Fusion supports 64-bit client OS (on 64 bit host platforms); Parallels is currently limited to 32-bit clients.
    * Fusion supports multiple virtualized processors (SMP)
    * Fusion has a large number of readily available, pre-packaged guest "appliances".
    * Parallels still has troubles with some USB devices.
    * VMWare is a MUCH larger company with a long track record of providing solutions in this space; Parallels is fairly small, and is a relative newcomer.
Most of the differences in features between the two are planned to be addressed in the next major release of Parallels; most notable are SMP and 64-bit guest OS support. Expect VMWare to have a performance advantage over Parallels - they have a lot more experience in this area.
There are also free options available, but be prepared to get your hands dirty.
Bochs is probably the best alternative: http://openosx.com/wintel/
Other options include qemu and Plex86. Bochs runs Windows reasonably well; qemu works, but is pretty slow. Last time I checked there was no stable port of Plex86 available, but (in theory) it should be a bit faster than Bochs.
These free alternatives do work reasonably well, but they tend to be more difficult to configure. Setup with Parallels and VMWare is mostly a point-and-click affair.
For most mac users, Parallels will be more than adequate; it fits very well as a virtual PC replacement on Intel Macs.

  • Free - Alternative DVD apps - trouble with burning

    Hello All,
I am still trying to help my son burn the video.
He made his movie in iMovie; it's 63 minutes long, and he got it into iDVD and made menus and such. When he tried to burn it, he ran into issues, though. Selecting any of the encryption options (even Pro, which is supposed to be able to handle movies that long) led to an error message when burning. After trying to prepare the menus, the message was that encoding the menus did not work (no specifics or anything). Any guesses as to why this is happening? Or can anyone recommend another program (preferably free) that would be capable of burning a movie of this length?
    Thank you! Jim

    What version of iMovie?
Any way you can get iMovie HD6? Works great with iDVD 8/9 since it is .dv format.
Be sure you have set iDVD's encoding preferences to either High or Professional Quality...not Best Performance, which is for movies less than 60 minutes.
Check the settings on the menus and submenus to be sure their durations are not too long. He will have to open the inspector window and manually move the slider to make the menu durations shorter.
Be sure that he did not use unauthorized audio in the menus.
Be sure to set the burn speed to slower....4x or less.
I have not made a DVD from iMovie 8 or 9, still sticking with version 6, but I do use iDVD 8/9 (they are the same), and I am running 10.5.8, too. I have had no trouble with iDVD and do find it simple--just so you know that it does work well. Most of my movies are just under 2 hours, most with many chapters, and most of them 30-75 GB in size.
If you could post the error messages, it might help us find out where the problem is.
