Free Disk space loss for no reason

I have several G4's running 10.3.9 that are losing disk space to the point of getting system volume errors I can not find where the lose is coming from no new installs except updates I have one now that loses 100MB a day for now reason delete unneccesary files looked at all new modify and still can't find what is using this disk space that wasn't there before are there hidden files that are being created or is there a system problem creating this.

your computer does write certain files such as logs. These are normally kept clean by maintenance scripts that run in the early hours of the morning, but if you turn off your computer or put it to sleep overnight they will not run.

  • Reporting of free disk space improper for my Mac SSD

Frequently I find that the reported free disk space shown on the desktop for my Mac SSD is wrong since I upgraded to 10.10.3
This is just a reporting issue since the disk utilities I have checked show the correct amount of free space.
To fix it I go to preferences and open Time Machine and turn it off, and then back on.....this has corrected the issue.
Just reporting this in case others are having the same issue.

OK, So I dl'd that and ran it and it only showed an additional swap file directory called "Private" that had about 3 gigs, still about 27 gig's missing.....
In this program the bottom bar shows 74.2 capacity, 61.5 used, 12.6 available
    Big directories (anything over 1gig)
    13.7 users
    10.7 Lib
    5.28 Apps
    2.53 System
    2.93 Private
    About 35 gigs
then a bunch under 1 gig that total less than 1 gig,
so say around 25.5 unaccounted for ?????????????
nice program but still wondering where my hard drive space has gone.....

  • Not all free disk space available for windows partition in Boot Camp

    Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp on my MacBook (2009, Mavericks OS, BootCamp Assistant 5.1.2) and unfortunately it has been a huge struggle until now to achieve that. The whole reason for this is that I had Windows XP as the second OS on my MacBook, but I wanted to increase the Windows partition with Disk Utility. Unfortunately this permanently damaged my Windows partition so I couldn't use it anymore.
What I did next? I decided to delete the old Windows XP (which isn't supported anymore by Mavericks) with Disk Utility, which afterwards tells me that I have 1 partition left: The Mac partition.
From there on I wanted to install Windows 7 with the newer Boot Camp. The problem is that in fact Finder tells me that my Macintosh HD has 58,54 Gb free space, so I would like to assign at lease 30 Gb to the to-be Windows partition. However, Boot Camp only gives me the option to assign 20 until 24 Gb, other values I can't assign.
Can anyonetell me why this happens or what could be the problem? I need to have more than 24 Gb available for my Windows as this was the whole reason why I once wanted to increase my old Windows partition, that's where all the problems came from.
I appreciate your help, thank you!
Here is what Disk Utility tells about my partitions:

TTBOMK the only way you can increase the Windows partition is to repartition the drive back to a single partition
    Then reinstall Mountain Lion
    Restore all data from backup
Create new larger partition with Boot Camp
    Install Windows
    Restore data from backup

buy an external HD   1TB for $60
NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.

  • SQL Query for Free Disk Space

Hi, I have a requirement to produce several custom free disk space reports based around groups.  This will be on a 2012 R2 management group.  For a given group, does anyone know the SQL tables and the joins required to produce
both the free space % and free space MB in one query?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

what did you means of free space % and free space MB?
does it means the HD free or DB free space?
I assume that its means DB free space and you may refer to the following SQL statement
select Path, displayname,ObjectName, CounterName, avg(SampleValue) as Value, getdate() as date
       from Perf.vPerfRaw pvpr
inner join vManagedEntity vme on pvpr.ManagedEntityRowId = vme.ManagedEntityRowId
inner join vPerformanceRuleInstance vpri on pvpr.PerformanceRuleInstanceRowId = vpri.PerformanceRuleInstanceRowId
inner join vPerformanceRule vpr on vpr.RuleRowId = vpri.RuleRowId
WHERE ObjectName = 'SQLServer : Database'
AND CounterName like 'DB Total Free Space%'
       AND pvpr.DateTime > DATEADD(minute, -60, GETUTCDATE())
AND Path in (select DisplayName + ';MSSQLSERVER' from OperationsManager.dbo.RelationShip r with (nolock) inner join OperationsManager.dbo.basemanagedentity bme
    with (nolock) on bme.BaseManagedEntityId = R.TargetEntityId
Where SourceEntityId in ( select BaseManagedEntityId from OperationsManager.dbo.basemanagedentity with (nolock)  where DisplayName LIKE

  • Time for Secure Empty Trash and Free Disk Space

    Hi Forum,
Can anyone give me a guesstimate of how long secure empty trash would take or can take? I have 290 items and its been there for about an hour.
Also, if I choose to free disk space, how long approximately would this take? Is it worth doing this? I have 40gb "free" now.
    Thanks.
    S

it's not necessarily the number of files, but more the total size of all the files combined. But lets just say it dose take a while to do. you really only need to use secure empty trash on files of a sensitive nature. Such as financial information (credit card numbers, back information, social security numbers)
Also by spending all that time writing to the hard drive, over and over. Witch is what secure empty trash dose. your reducing the life span of your hard drive. Like car tires your hard drive is only good for so many miles.
I ones secure emptied trash on a GB worth of data. I remember it takings hours. I ones tried scrubbing a whole hard drive, after two days I stopped it because I didn't realize it was going to take so long. That being said it doesn't take too long to scrub a few files that are a few MB in size.

  • IDVD error msg Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets

I get this error message on iDVD, does this mean I need to free up hard disc space... "Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets"

How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.

If you can't free up enough space by deleting items, get an external hard drive and move the files there. An absolute minimum of 25 GB is required by iDVD.

  • Im trying to burn an iDVD and its saying that there is not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets.

Im trying to burn an iDVD and its saying that there is not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets. My main hard drive only has a few hundred Mb left on it so i bought a 1 Tb external hard drive and want to know how to make iDVD use the space on the external hard drive instead trying to use the main hard drive. Any help would be awesome! thanks

    Hi
    Yes - This is important.
Free Space - Must be on the Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk and can not be used on any other.
My safe level is a minimum of 25Gb free space - to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK.
This is due to that Mac OS X is in reality UNIX and there by needs lot's of temporary space for temp. files and so does the application iDVD. And this can not be addressed elsewhere.
So to free up space - one thing is to move iMovie Events to an external hard disk BUT THIS MUST BE DONE Right Else all can be lost ! !
    • Never move or adjust any folders Named - iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - on Desktop/Finder - links will breake and can be hard to impossibly to heal. ALL movings must be done within iMovie Application (it goes for iMovie'08 to 11)
    • External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will NOT WORK FOR VIDEO - nearly everything else BUT NOT VIDEO.

  • Hyper-V: Why difference between "Free Disk Space" and "Inspect Disk" for a VM (Guest OS is Windows 2008, 2008 R2, 2010, 2010 R2)

I am trying to figure out the "Free Disk Space" on a VM on Hyper-V host.
When I see the available space inside the VM, shown by Microsoft OS, it is less than, what is reported by the ‘Inspect Disk’ utility of Hyper-V Manager.
    Why this difference?

    Hi,
Is it the exactly 10% free space when the issue occurs? Please run a chkdsk in CMD on that partition and see the size of available space matches the 10% - I'm thinking if it is actually full when a part of disk space is not calculated.
In my test I created a 9.87GB partition and keep copy a 1GB file on it. Now it only has about 130MB free space but I can still add txt file with small size onto it. So what's the exact message you got?
If it is a warning (but users can still add files onto it), please see if this will help:

  • Free Disk Space vs Mac Memory Usage

    Hi,
I'm wondering if you might be able to help me - I'm so confused with this issue.
I have a MacBook 2008 with an upgraded 320GB HDD, with currently 203GB free disk space.
My back up disk is 120GB - perfect for a time machine back up of 117 GB of data. However, the TM says theres not enough memory because the full size of the back is 150GB? How can this be?
For some reason, the free disk space figure is different to the memory usage figures in About My Mac?
Can anyone explain to me why this is?
My other half uses this computer and has only pictures and files on it, no music or movies? So how can she have utilised 117GB of data? This was previously a shared Mac, but I've deleted my user acc since upgrading and wanted to make this Mac entirely hers.
Any help regarding this will be truly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Tarmak

CarbonCopyClone.  It is "donateware" ... pay if you want to.  Others use SuperDuper! (both a free and a paid version).  I prefer CCC, but do not let that stop you from paying for SuperDuper if others convince you as both are very competent.
It makes a bootable copy of your system partition, and used repeatedly will make "incremental" backups that take far less time than the original backup.  I have a TimeMachine backup (I consider it "secondary") and a CCC backup whic I consider "primary" and will eventually save me when my system partition gets cranky and refuses to boot -- use the option key at startup to choose the external disk to boot from.
When you boot from the external drive, which will have CCC running in it, you can then "clone back" to the new internal drive.

  • "Not Enough Free Disk Space" error message, but Finder shows plenty of disk space available

Apologies if this is a double post, but I have been searching all over and can't seem to find this issue in the forums.
I have a 256GB Macbook with a fresh copy of Lion installed, am going through the process of migrating files back over, after which I have approximately 125GB free. However, whenever I go online and try to download any type of file (PDF, sofware install files, etc.), an error message displays saying:
Safari could not download the file “blahblahblah.dmg” because there is not enough free disk space.
Not sure how this is possible since the .dmg file is 18MB and Finder is saying there is over 125GB free. I've tried repairing disk permissions, booting off the Lion recovery disk and repairing the startup disk, all to no avail. Anyone had this issue before?

    Don Archibald wrote:
Check in Safari's Preferences (in the Safari menu) to see what has been designated as the destination for downloads. If that has somehow been set to a disk image or a CD/DVD location, you'll get that 'not enough space' message.
The same may occur if the download target location is set to a non-available drive. This can happen when aliases are used and things have been copied (migrated) from another drive.
Thanks for the suggestion. That wasn't the problem, but your suggestion did shed light on something else. I was able to perform a right-click action and Save File As... to my Documents folder. On further analysis, it appears that the "Macintosh HD", Downloads folder, and Desktop are showing the "pencil with a line through it" icon in the bottom left of the Finder window, which would suggest those areas are read-only for some reason.
My user account is the only one on the machine and it's an admin account. Any guesses as to why that might have set itself that way, or any suggestions on how to change it? I've already tried repairing permissions on the startup disk in Disk Utility.

  • Difference between Ipad free disk space shown in iTunes and Computer folder?

Hello! The paranoid chick is back with another question, lol!
I sync'd my Ipad 2 (iOS6) today. When I attach my Ipad to my PC laptop, I get that popup folder window that shows my Ipad as a removable drive - so I can copy over my photos to my laptop as a backup. Today that little folder that shows my Ipad as a removable folder said I have 15.5G free on my 32G Ipad, but when I look at the Memory Bar (or Summary Bar) at the bottom of iTunes, it says I have 15.33G free. It's only about a 200M difference, but I'm curious as to why there is a difference. Only in the last 6 months have I noticed a difference in the "Free Disk Space" amount under Windows and the "Available Space" in iTunes.
*chanting "I will not dwell on it, I will not dwell on it" over and over*
    Thanks for reading!

Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

A "backup" refers to backing up your iTunes media to an external drive or burn to CD's or DVD's, not your MacBook's drive. First rule of thumb in computing, "Backup" ...  very important to do so in case the your Mac's drive fails and needs replacing.

  • Update download trouble: App Store says, in error, "-not enough free disk space"

I wonder if anyone can help me troubleshoot this... I am unable to download some updates as from the App Store, and instead get an error message that suggests I don't have enough free disk space despite there being over 100GB free.
More detail: after installing Mavericks successfully, I started updating a few applications. While downloading iMovie and iPhoto there was an error - can't recall what the pop-up said, but I think it was a fairly general kind of error message. When I then tried to download them again, the App Store gave me an error message about free disk space, so I deleted a bunch of files and tried again. Same result, same error message ("Your hard disk does not have enough free space"). I checked on free space, however, and at this point I had over 100GB of free space.
I tried deleting the com.apple.storeagent folder in my Library/Caches folder, then trying again. but it made no difference. I've restarted, repaired permissions, verified the disk, restarted again, and I'm still seeing the error.
One odd feature of this problem: in the App Store purchases tab (see screengrab below), the icons for both iMovie and iPhoto are missing/broken, which might just point the way to what is going wrong.
    System details:
    IMac 27", 2009
    2.8GHz i7
    12GB RAM
    Running OS X 10.9
    Couple of screengrabs to illustrate:

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Time Machine
If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then turn it backON and close the preference pane. Wait a few minutes, then try the operation again.
