Free domain name hosting

Does Icloud offer a free domain name, and a url

iCloud does not provide web hosting services, and email is [email protected] If you want your own domain name you will have to obtain it from a domain name provider. This is never going to be free because a regitstration fee has to be paid (usually biannually) to the central domain name registry as well as to the provide handling your domain name, but it's not particularly expensive

  • Free domain name for .mac websites.

Is there any free site that works with .mac's personal domain feature. I have one through microsoft office live (free) but cannot seem to find out how to do it through that. Any information?

    http://www.ulimit.com/en/vdns.php
    http://www.dot.tk/en/pageA00.html
But these are only redirects (with cloaking maybe). They aren't CNAME. I don't think there is any free domain name who does CNAME.

  • Domain name/host name/external hosts

I have an external website, for argument sake: waterworld.net
I want to host the mail internally, and i have set up DNS records with my name registrar that has the A record point to my external web host, and I have created an MX record of "mail.waterworld.net" which points to the ip address of where I am hosting the mail server.
Should i give my server a name that looks like a fqdn based on my website? or should it be called something simple like "server.loc"? currently, that is what I have done.
Then in the general settings of the mail server, under Domain name (where it reads: enter the LOCAL internet domain name), should I use:
    server.loc
    waterworld.net, or
    mail.waterworld.net
Then the next option, Hostname, I am guessing that is one of:
    waterworld.net, or
    mail.waterworld.net
I have done a search, and the closest I have found was this post, but it's a different question based around a similar situation.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10580535&#10580535
I am not a total newbie, and have been running my own mail server for a few years now, and I'm pretty sure I didn't do it correct last time, so thought I would try and get it right from the start this time. Sorry guys, if this is a really basic question, but I want to get this right.
    thanks

Then in the general settings of the mail server, under Domain name (where it reads: enter the LOCAL internet domain name), should I use:
    [snip]
This field sets the primary domain of the server - the domain it accepts mail for. in this case it would make sense to set 'waterworld.net'.
    Then the next option, Hostname,
This sets the name it advertises itself as when sending outgoing mail. This should be mail.waterworld.net.

  • Domain Name & Hosting the Website

I have made a website for an event I am planning in March. Is there a place on Apple where I can purchase my domain name and host it there? or should I be using another place? I need it to be as cheap as possible...but still be a good place for hosting my website.
    Ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Is there a place on Apple where I can purchase my domain name and host it there?
No. Apple only provides hosting via MobileMe. If you want to purchase a domain name then go to a domain name provider like HostExcellence.com or GoDaddy.com. Both offer domain names and hosting services if you'd like to keep them all together.
If you host on MMe these AD topics and Apple documents will give you info on how to set it up:

  • Lists: domain name host name?

In the 'General' tab of the Mail service window in Server Admin I've got the following:
    Domain name: subdomain.mydomain.com
    Host name: mail.mydomain.com
So my e-mail addresses like [email protected] work fine. But what's weird is that when I'm creating mailing lists , the internal users get added to it like this: [email protected]!? Why is it that? Why don't they get added with [email protected]?
Because the problem is if they send something to the list, it gets denied because the mailing list considers them non-members!
Any ideas what the problem could be and how to correct that?
    Thanks.
    Xserve   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    All,
    From the Mail Service PDF Manual;
"Adding a Subscriber to an Existing List
This is the same procedure as adding a user to a newly created list.
To add a subscriber to an existing list:
1 In Server Admin, select Mail in the Computer & Services list.
    2 Click Settings.
    3 Select the Lists tab.
4 Select the List to which you want to add a subscriber.
5 Click the Add button under the Members pane.
6 Enter the recipient’s email address.
The email address must match the return address of the recipient to post messages
    without administrator approval.
If a user was added via the “Users and Groups” button, the email address in the list will
be in the form of “[email protected]”. If necessary, change the email address in
the mailing lists panel of Server Admin to match the return address used by the client.
    7 Assign the subscriber privileges.
    8 Click OK."
In other words, click in the user's email field and edit the address to suit - by default Mailman treats the list as belonging to the machine's host name, not to the email domain/sub-domain, which is the most logical since you could have multiple domains/sub-domains configured.

  • Domain Name, Host Name and VPN help

When I connect to my office VPN and try to ssh to one the machine I always have to put domain name, for example:
    ssh -X snorlax.xx.yy.com
Recently my office changed their VPN settings and this started happening. Earlier I was able to just use snorlax instead of typing snorlax.xx.yy.com
My mail client has also stopped working from home saying same thing: host cannot be resolved .
I was reading online about domain name but I'm not too sure how does this work.
Is it possible to append xx.yy.com before host name before resolving?
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Shivam

You could also directly assign the IP to the hostname and skip the dns lookup if you add it to /etc/hosts.
If you need more fine-grained control over hostname resolution you can use a local dns server like dnsmasq, bind (named), pdnsd, or unbound

  • Domain name, host name - what goes where?

So to clear the pipeline and reduce the amount of configuration, I decided to get rid of my router and plug my server directly into the modem, thus using the server as the gateway/router for other computers in my home. Hopefully this will eliminate the need for an internal/private network DNS configuration as well as an external/public DNS configuration.
I have a registered public domain name of N.com and an associated public MX record for this domain which is also named N.com (as opposed to mail.N.com or something similar).
I reinstalled the Leopard Server software and when the setup asked for a "primary DNS name" I named it N.com (the same name as my registered public domain). I went into firewall settings in the Server Admin and "allowed"/opened port 25 as well as 80 for email and web services respectively.
When I looked in the Mail settings the default domain name is "localdomain" and the default hostname is N.com (the same as my registered public domain). Default user addresses are [email protected] I have no problem seeing the server's webpages from the internet, but I still cannot get any mail from the internet to show up in my user accounts.
What more do I need to do?

    an educated guess-
does the client's email system have something like Spam
    Assassin filtering
    incoming mail?
is this cgi script matt wright's formmail?
If yes to both- Spam Assassin is rating the formmail
    generated email as spam
based on the subject line and default first line of text in
    the message
    body.
    A fix-
    1) hand edit the formmail script, find and change:
Below is the result of your feedback form
    to any other text
    2) use the optional field to change the subject line from the
    default.

    Hi
You would need to delete the domain from existing site and then add to your BC site.

  • Yahoo domain name hosted by .mac account

I have the domain www.innocentsurfschool.com which I bought through yahoo. I have followed the steps for using a "personal domain" with iWeb. i.e I have gone to my yahoo "advanced DNS settings" and changed the "CNAME." I have put this info in these fields:
A Record innocentsurfschool.com Yahoo! IP Address
A Record www.innocentsurfschool.com Yahoo! IP Address
    CNAME Record *.innocentsurfschool.com web.mac.com
    CNAME Record mail.innocentsurfschool.com web.mac.com
The problem is that iWeb publishes to:
    http://web.mac.com/innocentsurfschool/InnocentSurfSchool/Home.html
    when I type in
    www.innocentsurfschool.com
I am taken to the old (not up to date) version of the site. How do I fix this?
The weird thing is that when I click on "visit site" in iWeb, it takes me to the old version of the site at www.innocentsurfschool.com. I am not sure why this happens or if it is relevant?

Can anyone give me a little bit more clarity on this subject? I'm trying to get my iweb site published to my personal domain site of rivergolf.com that is registered with Yahoo! Not sure what to enter as the "source" and "destination" when editing the CNAME and A record entries.
Is web.mac.com the source or destination? Thanks.

  • Design a site, use my domain name, and host it via .mac

It sounds simple, and I thought a search through these forums would yield some easy answers, but no luck, so here goes:
I'm an advanced Photoshop and Final Cut Studio user, running an audio/video/image restoration and transfer business, but I'm a total beginner in the iWeb/.Mac area.
About three years ago, I decided it was time for a web site, so I went to a local company; they designed and still host my site, for which I pay them $30.00 per month; it's a simple site with no ecommerce, and six or seven pages. There is a contact form through which potential customers can email me.
I also have a domain name, for which I pay $15.00 per year to the same company.
My site is OK, but it's the same as it was three years ago; any small changes I have asked the company to make (mostly just text additions/changes) they have done at the rate of $75.00 per hour.
What I want to do is cancel my account with them, design a totally new site using iWeb, start a .mac account, and have the site hosted using my domain name, so that the average customer who sees my newspaper ad can navigate to my new site exactly as they can with the current one. (I only have one email account, through my ISP, which I don't want to change.)
I've got lots of questions, but mostly, what else do I have to do to make this switch besides cancelling my account with my current company? (After an overlap period, of course) What happens with my domain name--who will I pay to keep it? And finally, what simple things am I not thinking of?
Many thanks in advance to anyone with enough patience to read through this, and still find time to provide some assistance.

You can design your site in iWeb and upload it to either .Mac or a commercial server.
You would then provide the domain name registrar with your server ID number or, in the case of .Mac, your .Mac URL and instruct them to point your domain name in that direction.
.Mac is neither intended for, nor the best option, for a business site.
For example the company I host with - Host Excellence - allows you a free domain name registration and up to 6 sites with unlimited web mail and more server space than you are likely to need for about the cost of a .Mac account.
Commercial servers are a lot more reliable than .Mac, have wider bandwidth and usually have good tech support.
You only have to look at the number of problems in this forum concerning .Mac to see that tech support is not readily available from Apple.
I'm not putting down .Mac. I use it myself for various purposes and it is good for its intended use of one clicking publishing of personal websites.

  • I have a mobleme account and an existing iweb website. I would like to create a second website with a registered domain name. How do I do this?

I have a mobleme account and an existing iweb website. I would like to create a second website with a registered domain name. How do I do this?

All you need to do is create your second site in iWeb, move it to the top of lhe list of sites in the left hand pane and publish to your MobileMe account. You must make sure the second site has a different name from the first.
Then setup domain name forwarding to the second site following Apple's instructions here: iWeb: Using your own domain name. You will need to setup forwarding at your domain name provider also.
The key is that the second site (with the domain name) must the top top size in iWeb.
Note:  with MobileMe scheduled to be discontinued on June 30, 2012, you might begin looking into obtaining another host.  When you do you'll find that both sites will need to have a domain name.
When the time comes take a look at HostExcellence.com.  I've had excellent results with it. They have a couple of packages that offer free domain names.  And most important they have outstanding 24/7, ear-to-ear customer support.

  • How do I use my own domain name  with Mac server with iWeb

For a number of years I have had my own domain name that when typed into a browser it would redirect the browser to my site on the .Mac server. I hear with iLife ’08 I can have my own domain name hosted by .Mac so I know longer have to have the long addresses for each pages the I have now for my site (i.e. the http://web.mac.com/thewildhearts/WildheartPhotography/NatureGalleries.html). How do I go about getting my domain name (wildheartphotography.com) so that Mac will host it and do I need to notify the current host that Mac will be hosting my site now?
Thanks. I really appreciate the help I get from this forum.
    Pat

It's very easy, really. You go to your domain control and redirect the address. IPower, for example points the domain name very easily: you just type in the URL of your site and it will point to your mac server.
I've used GoDaddy before and it is a bit more difficult to "point".

  • Link domain name to .mac server

How do you link your own domain name to .mac server? please advice, thanks
    SIlver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi
This is something that is done by your domain name host, so login to their site.
Search for domain name forwarding, or domain forwarding.
Here you enter the address that you wish to forward to.
The short address for an iWeb page on .mac is:
    http://web.mac.com/YourUserName
If you have more than one site and wish to forward to a specific one, then you can use:
http://web.mac.com/YourUserName/iWeb/SiteName <<-- Make sure the W in iWeb is a capital.
