Free Lossless Audio Codec

I just heard about FLAC and have stumbled across some music in this format. apparently audio in this from doesnt loss quality from the audio stream in compression, so its better quality as well as reducing bandwidth and in turn storage requirements. but the music in FLAC ive downloaded wont register in Itunes and i was wondering how to adjust some settings or fix this so i can listen to these files in itunes

Yea sadly iTunes doesn't support FLAC audio file format.
FLAC is as you mentioned a slightly compressed, yet lossless version of the original .wav file.
Do a google search for programs that can convert FLAC back to uncompressed .wav format.
iTunes can handle .wav files - however .wav files are larger (1.400kbps quality) so you may want to let iTunes convert those into Apple's own lossless format (Apple Lossless) Just change your import settings to Apple Lossless.

  • No settings for Apple Lossless Audio Codec found in Compressor

For archiving reasons I have to convert many audio files to Apple Lossless (ALAC). So I thought it would be easy using Compressor 4 and and a suitable droplet. I was astonished that here are only settings for the following audio formats: AAC, AC3, AIFF, CAF, MP3 and WAV.
No Apple Lossless Codec in the settings?
Does anyone know how to create ALAC files

    Thomas A. wrote:
This setting generates a QuickTime file with the extension .mov
Of course it does. Why would that be a problem? "Apple Lossless" is not a file format, it's a codec.
OK, if I change the extension manually to m4a it seems to be an ALAC file, but I am not sure if it a "correct" one in regard to the specifications.
There is no "ALAC" file format specification. What are you going to use the files for?
ALAC isn't specified at all. The audio codec is called "Apple Lossless", and it is a set of algorithms to encode audio data, and a specification for a bitstream of audio data encoded such. It can be put in various containers, the most common being MPEG-4 and Apple Quicktime, but nothing will stop you from using AVI, .mkv, .ogg or anything else as the container format.
If you're unhappy with Compressor, which only seems to offer the QuickTime container format for Apple Lossless-encoded audio, there might be other tools that will transfer it into another container while leaving the actual encoded data untouched.
Since the Apple Lossless codec is now free, mencoder might work, even for the encoding itself. I haven't checked MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, VLC or others, which might also offer such options.
Quick tests didn't yield any success, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work.
An alternative for lessless encoding is the "FLAC" (free lossless audio codec), which is usually stored in an ogg container file. I don't think Compressor offers that, although VLC does.
It seems that the exact thing you want is not readily available (i. e. mpeg-4 audio-only with Apple Lossless audio codec.)

  • Ipod doesn´t support Apple Lossless Audio Codec with high bitrates?

Has anyone tried playing back .m4a files with bitrates in the range of 800-850 kbit/s succesfully? I have a recent 30Gb and a 4Gb Nano both with latest firmwares, but neither of them will play my files without hanging/restarting. Specifications claim it should work just fine. Help!!! I don´t dare to buy an Apple TV since all my music is in this format (works fine in iTunes/powerbook g4).

    Hey Jason,
Does Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1 fix the problem with Altiverb?

  • Which video and audio codecs to use?

Hi everyone! I've just completed a photo montage for my wedding (200+ people) next week, and need to render/export it today as I'm flying off tomorrow (it's a destination wedding). The montage will probably be projected onto a wall/screen in the banquet hall.
I tried exporting it once with the 'default' settings offered to me by Adobe Media Encoder, and ended up with a 4GB+ file. I then tried exporting with a QuickTime format (H264 video and AAC audio), and while I ended up with a <200MB file, the audio was choppy every 10 seconds or so. Which is when I gave up and decided to come on here and ask you guys!
I'm not yet sure what media we're going to be using to play the montage, i.e. my personal laptop, my wife's Macbook, or the restaurant's own system, so I'd like to create several versions just in case --
    1) .MOV (for Macs)
    2) .AVI/.MPG (for Windows)
    3) and a 3rd version to burn onto a DVD
My project's current settings are: 720x480 (I would like to stay at this resolution for the export), 29.97fps, 48kHz (16 bit). It's a 20-minute montage and I would like to resulting exported file size to be something manageable, perhaps <300MB at the most.
Based on the above, what video and audio codecs do you recommend I use for each export option? Please let me know if there is any other information you need. Thanks in advance!

One display/delivery possibilities would be a BD disc through Adobe Encore. That will be easily transportable, will play from any notebook with DVD/BD software player installed, and will be high quality. One can also play on almost any BD player, hooked up to a TV, or projector (HD capable).
I am also not a fan of any CODEC packs, and ONLY add CODEC's that are necessary. I will also try to go to the source even if it means buying the CODEC. Most "free" versions are hacked, or reverse-engineered, and often do not function nearly so well. The exception to "free" would be CODEC's, like the Lagarith Lossless, or UT, which are free.
With CODEC packs, what often happens is that one's good, commercial CODEC's are over-written by the hacked versions. Adobe does a good job of :"hiding" its CODEC's, but their priority can still be compromised, when the CODEC pack rewrites the Registry. Also, many will install all sorts of "stuff," and much of that is unneeded, and some totally unwanted.
    Good luck,

  • How to Convert iTunes Songs (Apple lossless audio file) to a MP3 for E-mail

How to Convert iTunes Songs (Apple lossless audio file) to a MP3 for E-mail?
My computer is Windows 7 and my Itunes software version is 1.0.2
    Many thanks in advance...

iTunes 1.0.2 is +at least+ eight years old.
The current version is 9.2, and it's free.
If that was a typo, and you're using something more current:
In the iTunes preferences, change the import settings to mp3.
Then select the songs you wish to convert.
From the "Advanced" menu, choose "Create mp3 version".
When done, change the import settings back to Apple Lossless.
    That's it.
BTW, this is the Logic Pro forum, which has absolutely nothing to do with iTunes.

  • Lossless Audio Only Export In Premiere Pro

    Hello,
I have finished a long project in Premiere Pro and the original idea was to use the "Edit" > "Edit in Adobe Audition" > "Sequence" to export all my 14 tracks to make tweaks, fixes and the final mix in Audition CS6.
Turns out the "Edit in Adobe Audition" is absolutely useless in this specific case because the .xml export format from PP to Audition will only allow to save the new Audidion project in 16-bit, 48000Hz Stereo, but all my original sound is 24-bit, 96000Hz Stereo. I could obviously live with the 48000Hz limit but not the 16-bit (which by the way makes me wonder if and how Adobe plans to make pros use Audition for a final movie mix).
So I'm stuck with the need to render all tracks from PP to do the mix elsewhere, maybe even importing it back into Audition. Since all my audio is wav 24-bit \ 96000Hz, is it the best lossless way to export as wav selecting "Uncompressed" for "Audio Codec" and using the same sample rate and sample size from my original files?
In case that's the best way to do it, are there any issues I should be aware of in case I decide to export it in 32-bit float instead, if necessary to use some features in Audition or other soft?
    Thanks a lot.

    Thanks, Jim.
Furthermore: due to the same .xml issue, I have rendered a few tracks from PP using the same method, imported them into Audition to do some fixing, then rendered out from Auditon again and imported back into PP.
If I render again from PP to do the final mix, I'll be on my supposedly fourth genereation of the files and my final mix will be the fifth.
Do we lose any data every time we render even if we use the settings as the original files?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Lossless audio for MPEG-2 and MP4

When I export a video out to either MPEG-2 or MP4 (H.264) I am not able to select an option for lossless audio. Is there a way to add that option?
    Thanks,
    Mark

How do you plan to use the file?  Which lossless codec do you wish to use?  Is lossless audio appropriate for how the file will be distributed?  Are you looking for best quality or is there a different, specific reason that you wish to use lossless encoding?  (Also, what version of Adobe Media Encoder are you using?)
The list of available codecs for the MPEG formats can change depending on the Multiplexing setting you choose.  However, make sure that the multiplexing setting you choose is appropriate to how you intend to distribute the file.  For example, 3GPP multiplexing creates a file optimized for delivery to mobile devices.  And note that the None multiplexing option creates separate audio and video files.
Adobe Media Encoder only offers multiplexed AAC encoding for MPEG4 and H.264 files.  Although not lossless, the quality of AAC can be very high and is the general standard for the MPEG4 container format.  Lossless encoding is not common for the MPEG4 container format, though it is legal per the MPEG4 Part 14 specifications.  Again, you should match your export settings to the intended use of the video file.

  • Distorted recording with QuickTime 7 using USB Audio CODEC

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8 with all the latest update from Software Update which includes QuickTime 7.1.3.
I am using QuickTime Broadcaster to stream back to itself (loopback) and record to disk at the same time. The input audio device is set to USB Audio CODEC (the default driver that comes with Mac OS X Tiger, and I am using an Alesis MultiMix 16USB mixer on a PowerMac Dual Core G5). I am using MPEG-4 Audio compression (no Video) of 16-bit, 44.1kHz and 128kbps (stereo).
The problem is that sometimes I get recordings (ranging from 1.5 hours to 2.75hours long) with distortion. Here is a short 20-second audio clip with distortion-free audio for about 6 seconds and then distortion sets in:
    http://www.netmedia.com.sg/files/SampleDistortion20s.mov
Whether it overlays on top of the original audio or replaces it, I cannot tell, but the transition is instant and smooth with no audible clicks or pops. The distortion can come in and go randomly. For example, I had one recording with distortion coming in at about 2 minutes plus and it remained until about 2hr10min when the distortion went away. Sometimes it didn't go away; other times it came in about an hour later. I also had once where the distortion last only for about 6 minutes somewhere in the middle of a 2.25 hours recording...all in all, it occurs at random. And I do get distortion-free recordings.
This problem also occurs on an iMac G5 with a Alesis MultiMix 12USB mixer, and in another Vara Software's Videocue PRO software which uses QuickTime for recording and playback. QuickTime 7.0.x and all versions of 7.1 also had this problem.
Because of this problem, I may need to use a convoluted method to stream and record to disk via QuickTime. By the way, I also tried streaming to another local subnet IP address just as a troubleshooting without success.

I too am having distortion problem (Sorry no solution here).
    Using OS 10.4.8, QT7.1.3, & Adobe Premiere 6.5 on a G4.
After I down loaded QT 7.1.3, my problems started. Is this when your problems started too?
Audio is in "slow motion" sound when editing. On rare occations, it sounds correct for 10 sec or so but sync is out and eventually reverts to "slow motion" sound. Even more bazar, when viewing a clip in a thumbnail preview, it works fine. So I know the orginal is good.
My contention is QT is causing this. All I want is my previous version of QT back. I think this might fix your problem too. Unfortunately, there is no reinstall that I can find that takes QT 7.1.3 off and puts QT 7.1.1or2. The reinstall QT 7.0.3 which is on the Apple website will not restall.
Looking for a reintall that will take QT 7.1.3 off, help anyone?

"Zen Vision:M 30GB - lossless audioO I've been looking into lossless audio formats, came across WAV and found (on wikipedia) that my player supports it. I only can record sound using microphone line in. Please help.

    Eric,
Thanks for your reply. Realtek audio works only in playback. There is a stereo mix in the mixer but the recording controls are not operable with no sliders in the mixer for any recording option. Slider controls appear to be grayed out. Can't figure out how to enable them. Downloaded newest drivers to no avail.
The M Audio control panel has no apparent option for recording stereo mix. Adobe ignores the sound from the DVD or CD and shows flatline.
I'm trying to record the sound from the DVD not rip the track.
When I go to Audio Driver Setup and select Audition 3.0 windows sound, there is no input device installed.
I'm thinking of going back to a decent internal Soundblaster card like I have on my 8 year old machine I am replacing.

  • Dubbing Audio with ASUS P6T WS Pro motherboard ADI AD2000B Audio CODEC

I am trying to dub audio commentary into my clips using the SoundMAX program settings provided with the ASUS ADI AD2000B Audio Codec.  I have confirmed a microphone signal appears in SoundMAX and that PPro Audio Hardware Settings/Enable Devices has a check mark against 'Microphone(SoundMAX Integrated'.  The other unchecked device shown is 'Line In (SoundMAX Intergrated Di'.  When I set up the Audio Mixer with a mono Audio 4 channel, click the Audio 4 microphone icon to turn it on, turn off all other audio channels, click the record button, then speak into the microphone, no signal appears.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm that I am providing ASIO audio to PPro.  I need to know if I am wasting my time trying to dub audio with the present setup or I am missing something.  If no ASIO is possible using the present setup, what audio card do you recommend?

When you have your Mic input enabled in ASIO hardware setup, then in the audio mixer ou need to arm tracks with mic inputs then, then press the record button the input should be seen at this point. But to record you voice over onto time line you need to play the timeline. So that the targeted Audio Track will be recorded onto timeline. And after you stop playback you will se recorded audio.
    Good luck.

  • Does version 12 support producing video clip with AMR audio codec?

From some documents i used as reference to proceude some videos for my phone Premiere Elements 8 can produce video clips with AMR audio codec. I bought today the Premiere elements 12 but I can not find a way to set AMR audio codec for my video clip. Only AAC audio codec seems available.   Is it possible to add AMR codec to 12 version?

    Neurona17
Adobe typically supports only current version, and, if you purchased from it, is strict on "within 30 days of purchase": for money back on that current version purchase. I do not believe such a thing as a "change the license for other earlier release such as 8 or 9" exists at Adobe. But, you could ask. If you wish to purchase one of those earlier versions that supports AMR export, you might still find some online.
Is the before import conversion of AMR to WAV a viable alternative?
    You wrote
Unfortunately so far I have not been able to generate any useful video clip for my system with this 12 version.
Is this in regard to the AMR requirement or to any video without the AMR audio?
Online I have seen that there is a download for the AMR audio codec. Does your system now show that you have such a codec installed on your computer. If not, I am not sure if download of this codec would place it in the Premiere Elements Publish+Share export settings choices, similar to import of some .avi video codecs. (Sometimes 3rd party codecs can create problem, so proceed with caution if you pursue that AMR audio codec idea.
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.
