Free Space and 10.6.7 update

I lost about 30gb of free space when I updated to 10.6.7. Any ideas?

10.6.7 only is 2 GB more than 10.6.2 on my machine. I still have my old 10.6.2 clone backup which I made before upgrading. And yes it was the combo update I did. And I updated iTunes, Quicktime, and iLife support with all that. So unless you have some other issue filling up your hard drive as outlined in my FAQ, I don't think 10.6.7 caused this.

  • How Come I Only 65.6 GB Free Space and 156 GB Already?: Thinkpad T410

I defraged my computer, removed temporary files, and deleted many files but still only have 65.6 GB Free Space. I'm careful on which websites I use, I use Google safe search and go on anti virus protection approved websites.
I checked my C drive and programs folder has 5.51 GB and Windows folder 27.9 GB. Every other folder in the C drive has much smaller size in KB.
My dad bought my Thinkpad T410 and I always assumed that having around 60 GB Free was normal since he installed programs for me. But I was a little bit sketchy that there was only 60 GB free, but assumed it was normal because of the program files my dad installed. But I realized the program files are too small to take up very much space. I had this labptop for less than two years and had to use my warranty several times for dragging arrow  (replaced keyboard) and replace fan multipe times.

    Ok.
Not too much there to get excited about.
Do you happen to know how much space is allocated to system restore points? You may have a big allocation that is full if you've been running the machine without cleanup for 2 years. I'm not in front of my pc at this moment, so I can't give the exact steps to check. Bear with me and I'll be back a bit later. In the interim, someone might jump in to continue.
If you're running Firefox, another thing to check is the amount of the cache allocation.
    Cheers.

How do I get my videos to upload from my sony handy cam when I get the message The following file could not be imported.  The file is in an unrecognized format. I am using a macbook pro version 10.9.3, I have 411 gb free space, it worked before I downloaded the latest update for iphoto.

You may be able to download and install the update from here: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
If I upgrade to Yosemite will I be forced to go to the new Photos program
No. After upgrading (and of course make a back up first) you will need to update iPhoto to v9.6.1 (you won't be able to do this prior to upgrading). Here's how:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Photos is v1 of a new app, as yes it's not as mature as iPhoto. It uses a different technology for working with external editors. That requires Adobe to write an extension to let it hook into the new app. Not done yet, neither has anyone else.
Going forward: iPhoto will run on OS 10.10., but there is no guarantee for subsequent versions of the OS. You might want to factor that into your anger term thinking.

  • I had 230.00Gb of free space and i now have 220.00 Gb

Well at first i had 230.00 GB of free space, then i installed vmware fusion and windows 7 but after like 2 days i deleted the whole machine and unistall vmware fusion. now i am down to 220.00GB. Why ??? i emptied the trash and i looked what was talking too much space but i only found that application support was taking 10.00GB. why?? NEED help

You normally need 2-3 times the size of the app in free space on the iPod Touch before you can install the app. So you need to free up a bit more space and then try downloading and installing it again.

  • "Not enough free space" and "cannot play the current song"

I have a reasonably large (about 80gb) music store, consisting of mostly AAC's ripped from my CD collection but also a lot of iTunes store music and a sprinkling of MP3s, podcasts and iPhoto pictures, about 7,000 items in all.
For some reason the Apple TV appears to sync nicely but then I have the following problems:
    1. Whenever I select a song I get the message: "Apple TV cannot play the current song"
    2. There is an exclamation mark next to Apple TV in iTunes stating that some of the tracks couldn't get copied across as there wasn't enough room
    3. Only one picture from iPhoto can be seen when you do the slideshow.
The Apple TV is connected to my network directly into the back of the new Apple Airport Extreme (802.1n) base station by ethernet and can play trailers beautifully. The head unit is a Mac Mini running 10.4.9 and 7.1.1 with plenty of free disk space and 2gb of RAM.
    I've tried:
    - Reset to factory settings
    - Restart the Mac Mini running iTunes
    - Power off everything and start from scratch
    - Selecting a sub-set of stuff to copy across
Before I reset, iTunes reported about 4GB used out of 32GB but now it shows 32.64GB free out of 32.83GB.
So frustrating.... feels like a genuine bug. Will continue with my methodical trial and error but would love some pointers from anyone who has seen anything similar. Searching on these forums showed up nothing.
    Thanks in advance

Hmm... looks like an ID-10T error... source drive containing the music files had failed, a quick repair and things are looking a lot better.
If this is the cause iTunes was very confusing, it appears to cache each set of error messages every time a sync fails, i.e. if it had tried to sync 3 times then you had to see all the error messages 3 times, plus the messages were things like 'not enough space' instead of 'reconnect the drive you idiot'.
Syncing is taking a lot longer right now, suggesting the files are actually getting copied. I thought it was quick....
Will confirm all is well shortly.

  • Need program to safely scrub free space and deleted files and parts of file

In PC world they have CCleaner and R-Wipe & Clean and a half-dozen other well-regarded programs that clean up the junk off your drive, sanitizing it while not touching the data still in use. Are there such programs with good reputations in the Mac world? What be they?

Thanks, I have used that. I'm not so sure it is as thorough as the programs I mentioned for the PC, which take out fragments of sectors, various histories, cookies, bits of remaindered programs, etc. And they are much quicker, seems to me, than the Erase Free Space in Disk Utilities to boot (even the straight write zeros is slow in DU).
So I was looking for some free or commercial products that offered a range of methods and good speed, as well as a broad range of "intelligent" pruning.

  • HELP! I attempted to erase free space and now I can't open any files!

Hi everyone! I hope you can help me with my problem.
Last night, I attempted to erase free space from my HD using disk utility. During the operation, the computer hung, so it wasn't able to complete 'creating temporary file' operation. So i had to stop the operation. And now, I can't open any files! Turns out my HD was full. But prior to my attempt to erase free space, I still had 25GB out of 55GB of free space. What happened? And how do I fix it? A lot of important files are in my HD and I don't want to lose any of it.
Hope somebody could help me. Thanks a lot!

Hi, Scary isn't it? I did the self same thing. Check your trash, you should see one or more disk images there. Empty the trash. All will be OK thereafter.
If they're not there, restart and either the system will sort itself out or they will appear in the trash, so empty it.
See here for my thread on the same subject.
    Good luck,

  • Erase free-space and permissions for applications

Hi all. A couple of quick questions...
    1) The disk utility has an "erase free-space option". Is there a corresponding Unix command for this function?
    2) What are the proper permissions and ownership for files in the Applications folder? In particular, should these belong to "root"? Is that safe?
    Thanks in advance
    Eric

    MacintoshHD:~$ ls -ld / /usr/sbin/diskutil
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin 1190 Nov 27 05:30:28 2006 /
    -r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 85580 Sep 8 18:47:38 2006 /usr/sbin/diskutil
so from an admin-privileged account, you shouldn't even need sudo...
Negatory, my UNIXish friend. As I said before, free space doesn't belong to any directory. / is a directory, hence you cannot access free sectors through it. You must access the raw disk device; directories are a logical construct superimposed on the raw disk device by the OS*.
You can find the raw disk device using either Terminal or Disk Utility. In Terminal, you can use
df /; in Disk Utility, select 'Macintosh HD' in the left panel, and click "Info" in the tool bar. On my system, / is "mounted" on /dev/disk0s03; that's the raw disk device which holds all the disk sectors, whether they are in use or not.Karl-Zimmermans-Computer% df /
Filesystem 512-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s3 116948016 87894784 28541232 75% /
    Karl-Zimmermans-Computer% ls -l /dev/disk0s3
    brw-r----- 1 root operator 14, 2 28 Nov 23:11 /dev/disk0s3
Karl-Zimmermans-Computer%As you can see, you must be root to write to this device. Hence, you do need to use sudo to erase the free space.
*The "raw disk device" is also a logical construct, imposed by the OS on the disk controller; several "raw disk devices" can reside on the same disk, and can overlap; typically, one such device represents the whole drive, and others are partitions.

  • HARD TO SOLVE - User account free space and HD free space do not match

    Hello.
I just upgraded my iMac from a 320Gb to a 1Tb, so as to have more space (obviously). The APR did install the HD since I did not want to mess myself with the hardware (I'm clumsy). I then reset the data via TimeMachine since all my files are in a filevault protected account.
I now have a problem they cannot solve. My user account (there's only one account on the whole computer, let's call it XYZ) is protected by filevault. In the user account XYZ there are only about 100Gb of space left, whereas the LocalHD clearly shows that there are more than 475Gb left on the LocalHD. I cannot turn off filevault as it keeps saying that I am missing about 370Gb of free space to turn off filevault.
And I need more space in my user account XYZ for various reasons, one of them being synchronisation over internet et caetera. Does anyone have a solution which does not consist in moving every single file manually to a new user account?
My guess was that the filevault account XYZ is limited by size since it comes from the old HD which was only 320Gb, but even that makes no solution, as it occupies a lot more than 320Gb at this point (my iTunes lib is bigger). As I said, the Luxembourg APR have no idea how to solve this issue, I would be more than glad if one of you had a solution to trick the filevault account XYZ into believing it had more space allocated (I'm not that used to the terminal, it may be the key to the problem).
Thank you so much in advance,
    Laurent

    Hi,
My guess was that the filevault account XYZ is limited by size since it comes from
the old HD which was only 320Gb,
Yes, I think this is what happened - see
*Mac OS X: FileVault-protected Home shows less capacity than what's available on the hard disk*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24068
but even that makes no solution, as it occupies a lot more than 320Gb at this
point (my iTunes lib is bigger).
At least in Snow Leopard, when you create a FileVault account the "potential capacity" of the FileVault volume contained in the sparsebundle is twice the size of the underlying HD! Obviously that capacity could never be realized, since the sparsebundle could not grow larger than the HD that contains it. So for example, my startup HD volume capacity is 320GB. If I create a test Filevault account named "fv" and Get Info on the FileVault mounted volume (the icon in the sidebar), it shows an apparent capacity of 640GB! The reported Used space is apparently artificially inflated so as to make the actual available space seem correct:
The normal fix for your situation is to turn off Filevault and then optionally turn it on again, but you currently don't have enough free space on the HD to do this. The FileVault sparsebundle is supposed to self-compact when you log out of FileVault, and so compacting it manually may not help. If you do try this via a Terminal command, I think you will have to do it as root - I could not directly access a FileVault sparsebundle from a different admin account.
    The support article above suggests:
If you do not have sufficient free space on your hard disk, you will need to temporarily reduce the size of your home directory, for example by copying a large amount of data in your home directory to an external hard disk, then deleting the stuff that you moved from your Home. After copying, log out or restart so that FileVault can reclaim the unused space.
    This seems safe, though time-consuming.
An alternative approach would be to try to directly resize the FileVault sparsebundle and its contained volume. This can apparently be done, but is obviously risky since if something goes wrong you could easily lose everything in the Filevault account. I did some experimenting and was able to increase the size of my test FileVault home volume to 1T by logging out of the Filevault account, logging into a different admin account, and then using this Terminal command:
sudo hdiutil resize -size 1000g /Users/username/username.sparsebundle
Here <username> is the name of the FileVault account. I was asked first for the current logged-in admin account password (for the sudo) and then for the password to access the sparsebundle, which is the password for the FileVault account. This seemed to work (it took some time to complete), and I was then able to re-log into the Filevault account. The sidebar Filevault icon Get Info now showed a capacity of 1.07 TB.
But again, this seems risky - I can't recommend trying it except perhaps on a backup clone.

  • I have an iphone 4s  with 2gb of free space and when i try to put music on it, it tells me i cant because there is no space and im only adding 8mb so i cant add new music.. PLEASE HELP!

    Please HELP

I'm having this same problem. I've got 21.36G audio, 8.73 photos, 11.64 apps, 2.12 other, and negligable books and video. With all of this, I have 13.27 gigs free, and the sync error says I need about 8 gigs more. I've got an iPhone 4S running the latest iOS 6. Also, I've been using checked items to manage what gets downloaded to the iPhone, and I noticed that the checked items add up to much, much more than is on the iPhone, even though I've downloaded within the last few weeks and have songs from a few weeks ago on the iPhone. Even so, there are about a hundred fewer songs on the iPhone than are checked in iTunes.

  • Disk Utility Crashed during an "erase free space" and now no space exists

So i have no idea how to recover my space after disk utility crashed while I was out today, All I know is I had close to two hundred gigs freed that I wanted to wipe clean after resetting some things in various applications.
I figure I could go find the offending file through some unix-fu. Boy was I wrong
    udo find / -type f -size +300000k -exec ls -lh {} \; | awk '{ print $9 ": " $5 }'
    /System/Library/Speech/Voices/Alex.SpeechVoice/Contents/Resources/PCMWave: 382M
    /Users/vahtryn/lotusnotes851_macCZ5S6EN.dmg: 402M
Thats all I got for searching for any file sized 300 meg or more. So, what's the deal? How can I recover this space if I can't find the EFTFile1.sparseimage that's supposed to be created?
I read elsewhere it should be here: ls -lh /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems
ls: /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems: No such file or directory
    Not on my SL install.

Okay, found a solution. Posting it for others who experience this problem.
    1. Restart your computer
    2. When your computer is completely started back up, check your trash can. If there are recovered files in there, empty trash.
    3. If no files are in there, delete a file you don't need, or make a screen shot of something and delete it. Then empty trash.
After doing the above, temporary files were erased. At least that's what worked for me.
Finally: if you haven't done so already, back up your entire system, so in the event you have a complete crash, you will have a back up.
