Free Space Issue - Please Help!
Hey guys,
As you can see by the pic above, the hard drive on my MacBook Pro is pretty much full, but I have no idea why? Audio, Movies, Photos & Apps all look legit, but what the **** is going on with Backups & Other and why is it taking up 42GB?!
Any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Thanks again in advance.

Is there a special reason, that you are still on 10.6.5 You should try to update to 10.6.8 (make a back up first).
There are some nice tools to see, which files are taking your place on your HD:
Disk Inventory X
GrandPerspective
WhatSize
for example. Do you repair regularly your permissions and empty the caches? Take a look for Onyx or Applejack.

Hello there, I am having a little bit of an issue with free space on my start-up disk. For some reason, the free space keeps going away day after day. Now, this is what we have done: Deleted files on desktop, deleted emails, deleted iTunes art-work, and we got rid of some songs on iTunes. As soon as we do any of those, we seem to lose free space. If anyone can help on this problem, that would be very grateful.

GregHello! HERE is some info on freeing up disk space. I think your problem may lie in how you use your Mac. Panther 10.3.x runs its maintenance routines in the wee hours of the morning to rid itself of temp files that are created for instance when a disc is burned. If the machine is not left on all night it can't run them and you have to rely on a utility such as MacJanitor or Onyx to manually rid the system of temp files. Another problem occurs when the startup disk gets too full which will eventually bring the system down so it's important to keep at least 15% of free space at all times. HERE is MacJanitor and HERE is Onyx. I personally don't use a utility as I leave mine on 24/7/365. Tom

HT3680 Erase Free Space Issues!!
When I Try To Erase Free Space On My HD, The Process Fails Repeatedly. With Any Option I Choose, Like 7 Pass, It Takes 2 Minutes For The Entire Process. And That's Obviously Wrong. I've Tried Almost Everything. And My Disk Is Reading FULL. It's Limiting Me Big Time. And Also Hindering Me From Upgrading To Mountain Lion. Anyone Out There, That Can Help Me With This Problem ASAP, Please??
Erasing Free Space Will Definitely Help Me and My Situation. Plus I've deleted or transferred files to an External HD, a ton of files(About 75%). And still the hard drive is reading FULL. The Erase Free Space Option just isn't working for some odd reason. So Erase Free Space Is Definitely What I'm Looking For. Any think you can think of, why it's not working properly?? And thanks for you speedy response also.

Mid 2010 15" MBP i5 A1286 POWER ISSUE-PLEASE HELP-
The MBP works fine when mains connected but the only issue is every time I take the charger out it shuts down on me!!! So I have checked with a multitester & looks good the only thing i find hard to check for power is the battery itself as its hard to get a good connection, also I took to local Apple store & they checked with a new battery but said its still same issue so the guy disconnected nearly all the connecters off to check if they causing issue & he said now the battery is charging.
So they still have the laptop to do further tests etc, but I’m not sure what could be the problem hear as maybe there is some component which is bad so the battery’s not charging or what else could be the issue please help & advice as I’m really confused as if it was something to do with the logic board then surely it would not even charge even after checking with the multitester or like Apple genius done by disconnecting other components...
ANY HELP OR ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFULL,

I am using fully updated Yosemite on two iMacs, one office, one home, and recently began having this problem: When I use Disk Utility to erase free space, the window first says it is creating a temporary file and then very quickly starts the erase process with the progress bar. This takes hours, so I usually "fire it and forget it" — let it run overnight or when I will be away from my desk. Occasionally I'll stay at my desk or return after a while and note that the erasing seems to be progressing normally. When I find that the process is finished, I see a message to the effect that the erasing couldn't be completed because the program could not create a temporary file.

Hope you can help me out here.
I've recently purchased a 15" i7 Macbook pro. The machine is but 3 weeks old &, of course, very well looked after.
A few days ago, the built-in trackpad started behaving eratically. Cursor moving by itself, not responding to touch, clicking and opening things involuntarily. Not good at all. Many users seem to have had this exact same issue.
These problems seemed to miraculously stop after a few re-boots and possibly a software update? I really couldn't tell you what resolved the problem.
Unfortunately I now have a totally different problem.
There is a thin, possibly 8 to 10mm horizontal strip across the centre of the trackpad that no longer responds to touch. If I move my finger from the botom of the trackpad upwards (or vice versa), the cursor will stop momentarily as it passes over the horizontal strip. The buttons are fine and the rest of the trackpad is fine. For the moment, I've increased the cursor acceleration so that I can at least navigate round the screen with a smaller area of the trackpad. USB magic mouse seems to work fine.
If anyone else has experienced this &/or found a solution for this issue, please help me out here. I have rifled through endless threads about MBP trackpad issues with little success & do not live close to an apple store/genius bar.
This is a 3 week old machine that cost me a small fortune. To be getting software/hardware issues so early on in it's lifespan is really rather worrying for the future.

JI'm not sure what caused this, but I extended my lunch break and drove the machine down to the Westfield apple store. I didn't have an appointment with the Genius Bar but I managed to persuade one of the staff to speak to a technician in the workshop. She came back into the store and told me that they had replacement trackpads and that , considering the machine was only 3 weeks old, the technicians kindly sandwiched the repair into their timetable at zero cost. 2 Hours later, I now have a perfectly functioning trackpad/machine.
I can't thank them enough.
My only gripe is that I couldn't speak to a technician to find out what the problem was, how they resolved it or what causes these issues for future reference. Understanding why these problems occur often helps to build your own framework of understanding. Most of the threads i've read about trackpad issues are largely unresolved with people only speculating the problem/solution.
The initial issue I had with the trackpad's erratic behaviour seemed to be a well known problem that many are associating with a trackpad firmware update. Unless by pure coincidence I had an immediate & major hardware fault after it, which is unlikely, my personal guess is that the two issues were related. -
I just bought a macbook pro and I want to know how to restore pictures that were backed up on iCloud but then deleted from my phone. Isn't that the point of the backup so I can delete and make more space. Please help!

Then launch iPhoto and set iPhoto's Photo Stream preferences to the following:
Then check the Photo Stream section of iPhoto:
This is to confirm that the photos are still in Photo Stream. If they are they will be imported into the library.
NOTE: not all photos in an iPhone will be in the Photo Stream. PS only keeps photos in it for 30 days.
If you have the missing photos in your library put them in an album. Connect your iPhone to the Mac and open iTunes. In iTunes you can select that album in the library and sync the photos to your iPhone to get them back on the iPhone.

I have got a major prolen during transport.
I have GEMPLOYE1 Which is a time dependient master data. which has Attribute called 0COUNTRY_ID.
I have a custome attribute Called Actual PSGroup/Grade GPAYSCGR which has a compounpunding attribute 0COUNTRY_ID
Now when I am trying to transport PSGroup/Grade GPAYSCGR to QA that transport is failing , the log massage is
Characteristic GEMPLOYE1: Attribute GPAYSCGR compounded to 0COUNTRY_ID has a diff. time-dpdncy

We can't add authorisation objects on Individual servers.We need to add authorisations on BWD ie Dev system and transport to BWI QUA system.This is the Process we need to follow as per our rule set.
So,As the problem mentioned above if i add some auth. objects on BWD DEV system and transport it to BWI QUA system,it is getting transported Successfully to BWI,but the auth.objects what i have added on BW DEV system is not found on BW QUA system.
What could be the problem for that,Is that the problem with transports like TP error or is it related with some tables of auth.objects...................

I have a datagrid and I am doing a custom sorting on the grid(by getting data from DB).
I achieve this by capturing the headerrelease event of datagrid .In thee venthandler I will query from DB and do event.preventdefault to prevent standard grid sorting.
Now I need to display my own custom ascending/descending arrows in the header.i have created an header renderer for this,
In the headerrenderer I am lsitening to the headerrelease event of datagrid and in the eventlistener, as per the sortfield, i am trying to make the sort arrow visible/invisible.
But somehow making the sort arrows visible/invisible is not working.The initial arrow works fine.it is shown the correct column(Name) as done in the init() method.
The eventhandler is invoked on clicking the column headers and all the alerts are shown.
Please see the headerrenderer code below and help me.(code is not complete only the relevant part is included)

I have itunes 7 with 5,500 songs totalling 85 gig and....
a 30gig Gen5 Ipod.
First of all why on earth are 5500 songs taking up so much space? I can only fit 2500 songs on my ipod then it states it full.
Can someone please help me solve this issue or suggest some things that i need to check.
Can I compress the songs from 85gig to 10gig or so?

MichaelYes, quite simple. Make sure you first go to preference -> Advanced -> Importing and set it to the format you would like to use, say AAC or MP3.
To give you a little bit of an idea, I use 192 kbps MP3 ("Higher Quality") although some portion of my library are other bit rates like 128 and 160 from various sources. I have 7874 "items" that come in at under 35GB. So AAC or MP3 between 128 and 192 kbps should do it for you.
OK so once that is set, all you have to do is go to your library, sort by Kind so we can group all the ones you want to convert together. Select the bunch of them, right click and pick "Convert to XXX" (where xxx will be whatever you picked for importing preference; e.g. Convert to MP3). iTunes will not go through the process of making NEW copies of each track encoded with what you picked in the importing preference. Note that it makes NEW COPIES, so do small chucks at a time if you don't have tons of drive space left. After it finishes a group, you can delete the ones you just converted to free up the drive space (don't forget to empty system trash).
That is all there is to it.

Hi everyone,
I'm facing a strange issue with my Macbook Pro late 2008. The hard drive space is not updated when I delete files and folders.
This started to appen after I installed Lion.
The free space at the bottom of a finder window is only updated once I force a restart of the Finder.
In the terminal however the command df -h keep indicating the same free space. It only changes after restart of the computer.
The amount of disk space sometimes quickly diminishes until I get the message "Hard drive almost full" or "Hard drive full".
The last time I restarted the Spotlight index start to rebuild....
Please help...

It also indicates 145Gb free when I ask Info on my hard drive. -
I cannot fill my shuffle to its capacity. The "used" bar says I have 128MB of free space left and 363 MB used for 88 songs. I used to be able to put over 110 songs on it, but lately, 128 MB is always kept free and unable to be written to.
1. Checked preferences and have it enabled for music only.
2. Restored the shuffle with current updater 1.1.2 (a few times)
Please advise and thanks in advance for any help.OK... I think I figured this out. I just hope I didn't have to pay for a new shuffle because of it. I recently gave up and set up a service call. Unfortunately, the one I received as a replacement today did the exact same thing and prompted me to learn even more.
1. I re-read all of my shuffle materials to make sure I didn't bust my new one.
2. I followed the instructions in the owners manual and put my new shuffle in. It automatically updated the software on it (must have been an older model return).
3. It put the same dam* 88 songs on the shuffle that my old one had on it and called it a day. Pi$$ed me off bigtime.
4. I realized it was something I was doing or my ITunes was doing and not my dam* shuffle. Pi$$ed me off bigtime again.
5. I took a gander at the tutorial here http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt7.html and noticed that it suggested deselecting the "Replace all songs when autofilling" box if it stops filling your IPod and leaves open space behind. I thought I had it figured out here, did just that and nothing happened. Pi$$ed me off bigtime again.
6. I then saw this article here...http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920 and noticed that different formats would take up a certain amount of space. Some kind of light bulb blew apart in my head...
7. After reviewing the songs that actually got transferred (the crazy 88) I noticed that the vast majority are ones that were purchased off of ITunes... not ripped from CDs. All of my purchased file was on the shuffle... some other songs made it but almost none of my music is at 128 kbps.
8. The problem was the higher than 128 kbps AAC format that all of my ripped songs were stored at. I had to choose the "convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC for this iPod" in the preferences menu, then select autofill to get the rest of my space to be used on the IPod.
So... ruled out the shuffle.... I just hope they don't charge me for this one after I follow through and send the old one in. It looks like I get hammered for the new one if my old one goes back in good shape. Bummer. I sure hope they show mercy there at Apple... it took me a few tutorials, lots of digging in the FAQs and some heavy time on these pages to figure it out. Too bad it was so easy... it is always the last place you look.
