Free space on my sad hard drive

Hello from Brussels Belgium,
I have a 27" iMac with i7, a 2T hard disk and a 258 ssd.
My ssd now only has 3,2GB / 258GB available and I still have plenty of space on my 2T hard drive.
Here is a print screen of my SSD:
How can I select the files to transfer and is there a tool that optimizes the action to take?
Thanks in advance,
Sami

Look in your documents folder and that is likely where your large files are. Also if you store your iPhotos, iTunes, iMovie libraries on your SSD  you can move those to the 2TB internal drive too. Apple explains how to move those  in

  • Adding free space back to my hard drive

I erased windows from my MAC and am trying to add the free space back to my hard drive in disk utility and I keep getting the error message... 'Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed'
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Or why it's saying this??
    Thanks

You did not do this correctly. You should have used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition. You cannot use Disk Utility for this. Having done so is the reason for the error. You have only one thing you can do - repartition the entire hard drive.
    1. Repair your OS X volume and permissions.
    2. Backup your OS X system to an external drive.
    3. Boot from the external drive.
    4. Use Disk Utility to repartition the internal hard drive.
    5. Clone your external drive to the internal drive.
    6. Use Startup Disk preferences to designate the internal drive as the startup drive.
    7. Reboot the computer.

  • "Not enough free space" with multiple internal hard drives

I have a Power Mac G4, dual 1.25 Ghz, 2mb Ram running 10.5.8. I have four 500gb internal drives. I've had a number of issues with my internal drives lately. Hopefully someone here can help.
When I "get info" none of the drives display capacity or availability.
When I attempt to copy files from one drive to another I will consistently receive this error:
"The item "filename" cannot be copied because there is not enough free space.
My startup drive should have over 400GB of freespace, so there is plenty of space. This problem also occurs when I connect my Macbook Pro in target mode and attempt to transfer over files.
I was able to boot the G4 into target mode and backup my data. I then installed a fresh copy of OS X 10.5, then did the 10.5.8 combo update (not through software update).
This seems to have fixed the problem as I was copying and organizing my files back and forth between drives quite easily. However, the problem has returned from out of nowhere.
Anybody have ideas what this could possibly be?

Hi iliveontrantor, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Have you emptied the Trash on those drives?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Why when i delete photos and movies do i not get the free space back on my hard drive?

I'm desparately trying to free up hard drive space.  I have deleted unwanted photos and videos, emptied iphoto trash, rebooted and emptied regular trash but there is no corresponding increase in available hard drive space!  Please help or the Mac gets it!!

If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.

  • How to free space on an imac hard drive

My imac is showing that the hard drive is full however, I have tried several times to delete files, movies, and pictures to free space and its still shows zero space is available. Yesterday i freed 4.4GB and this morning when I turned it on its back to zero space available. Any ideas on what the problem could be would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Do you use the mac's mail application?  If you do open up finder, then go to the menu bar and click go, then hold down option, and a hidden folder called "library" should appear in the drop down box.  Click it.  Find a folder called mail and click once on the folder "mail" then press and hold command and click the letter "i" on the top right of this little window it will give you a size, how big is it?

  • [Solved] Strange free space after adding 2nd hard drive

    Hello,
Im pretty new to linux but am learning pretty fast, fast enough that I needed to install a second hard drive.
Every thing went well, got the new drive in and mounted to /home and moved all my old /home to the new drive. After all that I went to delete the old /home on hda resize the / partition to use the rest of the drive.
I used gParted 0.5.0 and booted from their live CD and did the deed. BUT now drive hda (40GB drive) shows that / is taking 36.92GB, when it was originally using about 4GB on the original 7GB / partition.
I ran the disk usage tool and..well
    1) It shoes that I'm using 4GB of 40GB
    2) Only shows that I have 44GB available when I have 2 40GB Drives installed.
can someone tell me whats going on here?
    to recap
Originally the 1 drive was laid out as

ill try the fsck right now
    heres the output you requested
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda3 7.3G 3.9G 3.0G 57% /
    none 505M 120K 505M 1% /dev

    /dev/sdb1 38G 93M 38G 1% /home
    total 46G 4.0G 42G 9%
    thats interesting.
/dev/sda3 is showing its old values almost like something in the partition tables didn't get updated?

  • Why can't I free up space on my MacBook hard drive?

My MacBook has 2 GB of space left, so I moved over 60 GB worth of movies from iMovie HD (including the application itself) to a hard drive and deleted it all off my MacBook. I then emptied the trash and went to check the space left now and it STILL SAY 2GB LEFT!! Can anybody tell me why I'm not freeing up any space on my hard drive? What gives?

Try restarting the computer, and if it still isn't showing the additional space try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
And, if this doesn't do it then you need to backup the drive, boot from your Leopard DVD, open Disk Utility on the DVD and erase your hard drive then reinstall Leopard.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

    Hello,
There is free software you can download that gives you a graphical image of what files are used on your hard drive. http://www.derlien.com/
This may help you clean down your hard drive for more space.
    Best of luck

  • How can I get the amount of free space that is on my drive to show at the bottom of the drive in Lion.

How can I get the amount of free space that is on my drive to show at the bottom of the drive in Lion.
This is a must feature for me and I may have to go back to Snow Leopard.
    Please help!

Right click on your desktop and choose "viewer options". Adjust the spacing and the size of your icons and you should be able to see the size of your drive(s) and the free space available on each drive with the exception of your bootcamp drive which will only show the overall size of the drive you have it on.  This may be different if you only have one system drive (like on a Mac Book Pro) with a partition containing bootcamp on it. this may only show you the overall capacity, I can't say for sure though as I only use a Mac Pro with 4 seperate Hard Drives which are showing both overall capacity and free space available. Hope this helps

It says I have over 150 gigs of video on my hard drive. But I have gone through and deleted almost all of what shows up, still it says there is roughly the same amount on the hard drive. Where are these files? I want to delete them so I can have my hard drive clear.
    Thanks for your help guys!

    Quote from the article.
Time Machine in OS X Lion includes a new feature called "local snapshots" that keeps copies of files you create, modify or delete on your internal disk. Local snapshots compliment regular Time Machine backups (that are stored on your external disk or Time Capsule) giving you a "safety net" for times when you might be away from your external backup disk or Time Capsule and accidentally delete a file.
So what makes a notebook any different then a desktop, other then with a desktop you might have your tm backup drive connected all the time.
The object here is to not indiscriminately delete files you need or want to keep. I personally have never deleted a file I wanted to keep.
In essence a backup is for catastrophic failure of your system. So it can be restored once that failure has been fixed. Not because you go in willy nilly and start deleting files.

I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook 10.6.7 but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive, and I was wondering if it is possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my Mac?

I think you're confused about how much hard drive space you have.  You probably have 2 GB of RAM...  there hasn't been a Mac shipped with only a 2 GB hard drive in a while.  At the bottom of any Finder window, how much space is available?
If you're actually running low on space, you should move documents to the external drive, since many applications want to be on the system drive.

I am trying to open space in my macbook hard drive, so I deleted files and after emptying the trash bin the amount of Gigs didn't increase, why? Where can I go and delete those files?

Did you do a secure empty trash? SHIFT COMMAND DELETE, they will be over wriiten. Are you deleting docs as they aren't much space, videos, pictures, music use much more space.
You can move those fiels to an external "archive" drive to save them then delete them from your internal drive.
