Free transform and snapping (to guides)
I use Photoshop CS5 and Windows 7.
I need to free transform a layer, each corner separately (holding the CTRL-Key). It's a kind of perspectivistic transformation (mapping cover-art on a 3D-rendering of a book) and the resulting form is not a rectangle. I created crossing guides on every corner of the book so i can do this multiple times quickly and accurately. Unfortunately Photoshop for Windows does not snap to the guides when dragging single corners with the CTRL-Key.
I tried the same on a Mac with CS4 and it worked without any problems. Photoshop snaps to every guide in free transform mode
Please help this is driving me crazy!
Shame on me, I didn't think of that – using "Distort" is a workaround indeed.
I'd prefer to do it with the Ctrl-Key though as its much faster – is there a way to disable "turning off snapping" when holding down Ctrl?

Illustrator CC Free Transform not Snapping to Guides, No Smart Guides
The Free Transform tool in Illustrator CC won't snap to Guides, and Smart Guides don't seem to work either.
I have all the options checked in Preferences > Smart Guides > Display Options and the Snapping Tolerance turned way up.
In CS6, Free Transform with Smart Guides allowed you to snap to paths, points, alignments and guides.
Also: Any way to hide/minimize the Free Transform popup?James,
Depending on the urgency of your plight, you may await some cleverer suggestions, or read on.
When seems to be wrong for no apparent reason, and it is not limited to certain (existing) documents, you may consider the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps, unless someone comes up with a cleverer suggestion.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences:
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

Illustrator CC Free Transform and Snapping
It seems that in CC the Free Transform tool does not snap to grid when resizing (for example) a rectangle. If I have "Snap to Grid" turned on, it only is taking effect with new objects getting drawn. Am I understanding this correctly? If I draw a rectangle, and want to reshape/resize it to fit the grid, how do I do this? It's a bit embarrassing asking this question, but CC seems to have changed some things from CS6.
I may have found a solution.
I called a buddy of mine to help tackle this with me.
Turns out, I'm trained to use the Free Transform tool in order to resize objects (and this has always worked in the past, that's what I've always done...hit the "E" key and then resize the object).
NOW, you're not supposed to use the Free Transform tool for precise snapping (which, I...I don't even have words for, because there's no reason to remove the actual option of wanting a precise move (resize) to be made...so dumb).
In order to precisely resize objects (with Smart Guides on), you must first make sure you are showing your bounding box (an option I previously had hidden 95% of the time because I hated looking at it). So View > Show Bounding Box. Then, with your regular ol' Selection Tool (V), you select the object, then hover over the anchor point and it will allow you to resize with the Smart Guides (and it works as well as it USED to work).
The stupid thing is this works exactly the same way as the Free Transform tool...so, I guess, the Free Transform tool is now relegated to performing transforms only when you want to ignore precision altogether (which for me...is never). I'd like a refund for that portion of the software that I'm paying for...or something. I don't get it.
Anyway, overly long story short. Turn on your bounding box, use your selection tool to resize (instead of hitting E and using the free transform tool) and your resizes/transforms will align to your grids, guides and in accordance with the smart guides.

Free Transform and Crop Crosshair
What is the Free Transform and Crop Crosshair used for?
Whenever I transform an image or crop an image it shows up in the center of the image. Is this used as a refrence to the center of your image or can you do more with it?
I notice that you can move the crosshair around, which makes it even more confusing to me.The crosshair is the point around which a rotation will be made (the roatate point). You can move it to change the point of rotation in a transform or crop.

(CS5.1) Free Transform and Warp tool causing pixelation and quality drop.
When I free transform and warp a layer to lie flat, sometimes I'll get this harsh pixellation at one end of the layer. It doesn't appear while I'm doing the warp, just suddenly coming up when I hit enter to apply the transformation.
So for example, Ill be transforming this grid, which is originally about 9x this big.
So when I''m running the transformation/warp, it looks like this
Not great, but at least most of the lines are still intact on the left and back (the right side is basically fine looking)
But once I hit enter, I get this
And now like, half the lines I did have are gone, and what's left is super pixelated.
Is there an interpolation setting I could be using? Is it something unavoidable from how distorted I make the layer? It is a general AA problem with mapping texture on surfaces in acute angles. In 3D programs this is solved by a technique called mipmaping, The 3D renderer calculates the degree of distortions and applies blurring filter where it is needed based on the depth of the 3D space to solve this problem. Unfortunately Photoshop is not a 3D renderer and can't eliminate this. You can try manually to reduce it yourself by applying the same transformation on several differently blurred copies of the layer and then using masks made with manual brushing over the problem areas to reduce the artifact.
Here's an example image of a 3D program solving the problem.
and a quick attempt I made to illustrate the problem using your grid after making it more dense with several multiplied layers. the bottom part is the grid masked with different degree of blurring at the problem areas. As you can see this is not an easy task and the problem may be considered as impossible to be fixed nicely. On top of that as you can see this approach may require constructing grid patterns on layers so that you can blur the eventual horizontal or vertical directions separately.

Freezing when using free transform and more
I'm on a 12 core Westmere PM w/20g RAM running 10.6.8. with a standard Mac scrollwheel mouse. I have a Wacom tablet attached but it hasn't been used in weeks.
In the past week, I have encountered two mouse related freezing episodes that I cannot duplicate on purpose.
The symptoms are things like Transform handles that won't respond to mouseclick/dragging but responding to numerical entry. Or Liquify opening but unresponsive to any input whatsoever other than the ability to close the panel from a mouseclick. Or converting a layer to a Smart Object….applying a filter, and finding that the filter won't respond to mouse input. It's like arbitrary mouse input freezing or something.
I called this a "half crash" because the program still remains somewhat operable (files can be closed, saved or opened, numerical entry is possible in some instances or mouse clicking works on higher level meaning or window opening/closing) but in general, a great deal of functionality is disabled. Only a relaunch of Photoshop solves the problem. I've never seen anything like this in Photoshop before. The only other thing open at the time was CS6 Illustrator.
I am writing about this because I have no idea what sets this off and was wondering if anyone else has bumped into it. If you have, you might want to mention it here, as these intermittent glitches are a pain to track down without a number of users providing clues. Normally I wouldn't post something like this….but since it is a v.1 version of CS6….I thought it worth mentioning.I skipped CS5 and went from CS3 to CS6 - this is the standard Free Transform menu in CS6:
You're likely to get a quicker answer to your question if you post in the Photoshop users forum - http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop - where there are a number of people still using older versions.
Good luck,

Free transform and warp crashes CS6!
When I'm using the free transform or warp in Photoshop CS6 it's suddenly started crashing, telling me that "Photoshop CS6 stopped working correctly". This started happening today and I don't know what to do! :< Help!

I designed my page in Dreamweaver CS6, and I want to animate the elements with Edge Animate...
I've noticed, though, that I don't have a Stage in the Elements panel, I'm trying to follow along some instructions/tutorials and a lot seems to start with adding code to the stage or code that references the stage... in lieu of this, do I just create a .container div and use it the same way?
ALSO, I can't seem to use the "snap-to-guides" Feature in the View menu... it stays greyed out, how do I turn that feature on?
PLUS it's not allowing me to switch anything from px to %! I select any of my div's in the elements panel and the little px to % switches are greyed out!!
... basically what I'm trying to do is center an image/symbol on my web page but without guides, that's tricky and I'm just estimating things (I want the starting image in the exact center of the screen when my animation starts...
Thanks for any help!it sure sounds like the battery is defect

Feathered edges when using free transform
Hello
When I apply a free transform to a raster layer or a smart object, the edges of the layer get slightly feathered (1px on each side). To demonstrate, here is a smart object that contains a rectangle shape. Here it is before applying free transform:
And here it is after being scaled down (bear in mind that the anchor point of the transform is set to top left):
Note how the edges are no longer crisp. Normally, I would have to go to the original image document and use the Image > Image Size panel to resize it to what I want and then repaste it to my document, but this is inconveinient and not particularly elegant. I want to be able to do this in my main document without hassle and particularly, I would like the edges of an image to remain clear if I'm free transforming a smart object.
I know that I can set the image interpolation setting to Nearest Neightbor in Preferences > General, but then the result is even worse as far as image quality is concerned.
Is there a way to get around this problem?
Thank youTo further what Chris has said... You want both high quality resampling AND pixel-alignment? Those are competing goals.
One thing you could consider doing, if pixel-alignment is paramount is to use use a rectangular shape (i.e., via a vector mask) and the Snap To Pixels option:

Edit / Free Transform image ( NOT PATH!)
I would like to do an edit / free transform to resize a layer in my image. I want to do this WHILE LOOKING AT a round path that I have created.
No problem in photoshop 7 , just turn on the path, select the image layer that I want to resize, edit/free transform and I can shrink the image while looking at the circular path to see how the image fits within the path.
In CS3, when i try to do an edit / free transform, instead of resizing the image, it wants to RESIZE THE PATH FOR SOME REASON. No, no, no. Leave the path alone. I want to SEE the path, but I do not want to resize the path. I want to resize the image while looking at how it fits within the path.
The only way that I see to resize the image is to turn off the path so I can no longer see the guide that i am using to determine the final image size / position. Obviously a major malfunction.
Hopefully, there is an easy workaround out there? Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark...and another thing.
If you use the ctrl HTH workaround mentioned previously in this thread, it doesn't work for the situation where I need it the most.
I open an existing image with a circular path. I "paste in" an image from an email. What I used to do in photoshop 7 was edit free transform and i could freely shrink the image EVEN THOUGH THE PASTED IMAGE WAS LARGER (OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF) THE CURRENT IMAGE. The free transform would shrink the image to within the boundaries, then shrink further inside the path as needed. So Charles, you can see that the result of the CRTLHTH would be to size only the visible portion of the pasted image within the path. No, I need to size the WHOLE PASTED IMAGE even if it is outside the boundaries when pasted. Any workarounds appreciated. Maybe a CTRLPQHTH or something like that?
Thanks,

Free Transform Problem in CS5.1
I am haveing an issue when trying to use the Free Transform funtion in Photoshop CS5.1. After pressing command+T, the bounding box appears, but when I attempt to resize, the program becomes unresponsive. After a minute or two I can cancel the Free Transform and the program become responsive once again. Seems to be more of an issue when trying to transform more than one layer at once.
I am on a 1 year old MacBook Pro with 16GB, I have 10 GB of free space.
I am on OS X 10.7.5 (recently installed this upgrade and this may be part of the issue.)
I am in 64-bit mode. My memory usage set at 70%
The cache tile size is set to 1024K
I have reset my settings, ran all available updates.
One suggestion was to try to update my vidoe card. My card specs are:
Video Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Video Card Renderer: ATI Radeon HD 6750M OpenGL Engine
After visiting the AMD site, found that they do not have an update for 10.7.5 and do not have the HD6750 listed for Mac.
Any help is appreciated.
Edit: Also, cannot move the image once I press command+T.
(Or at least it make the program unresponsive for a while)
Update: Uninstalled entire design suite and re-installed. Still having the same issue. You only have 10 GB of free space? You should have much more than that with the settings you are using. When you launch Photoshop is grabs it's scratch disk, space on the hard drive that backs up the RAM usage. It mirrors it exactly. So you are using 70% of 16 GB RAM, which would be 11.2 GB. This means the initial scrtach disk size Photoshop creates on launch is also 11.2 GB, which is larger than the free space you have available. You will need to free up some disk space to get things working. Or at the very least drop your RAM usage to something more managable by your available resources, like 30% (so you leave some space for other processes).
Also, have you tried with smaller files? -
Free Transform Rotation Issue - Layer rotates/moves by itself after clicking on it?
Hey all. Since the last update, I have been experiencing this weird issue while using Free Transform. Sometimes, after I invoke Free Transform and then click on the layer I am transforming, it seems to rotate by itself. Usually clockwise. It happens really quickly. It's almost like my mouse cursor is off center when I click on the layer and the it's like the layer rotates to match the location of my cursor. It's so weird and quite difficult to describe. I have also experienced the layer moving quickly to the right after clicking on it while in the Free Transform state. I have tried 2 different mice and experienced the issue on both of them. I have also tried different mousing surfaces and experienced the same thing. It doesn't happen every time but just sometimes. It started doing it since the latest update. It's really annoying. Just wondering if anyone else has this issue.

Free Transform/Rotate Causes Flash CS3 to Crash
This problem is driving me nuts. I'm importing a 2000 x 3000
jpeg image and converting it to a symbol. everything seems fine
until I try to do a free transform and rotate the image. Then when
I proceed to cut the image, CS3 crashes. I can reproduce the error
every time. It works fine if the image is smaller but 2000 x 3000
is not too much to ask at all!
Has anyone else had similar problems?
I can reproduce this error on a Mac and a PC.
UPDATE: Breaking the bitmap apart after importing the image
seems to remedy the problem. Is this the only fix? Doesn't seem
right to me that I can't just easily drop in an semi-large asset
without having to break it apart.
UPDATE 2: Tried doing this with a larger asset and this did
not work at all. It crashes, I feel like Flash has a hard time with
large assets but I need the assets large so when I zoom in, I do
not lose quality. What am I doing wrong here? How do you guys
handle your zoom ins?
Please tell me there is a fix! It's been a year since, still not solution!?
I am having similar problem for the last 6 months!! -
Free transform is leaving a line?
I have used the free transform and/or transform scale many times, and have never had it leave a line. I must have changed something , but can't figure it out. Have played around with the refine edges, and can't seem to make it go away.
I am using CS3, and make my selection, then go to stretch it. When I deselect, there is a thin line on the bottom of where the selection was. Why is this happening?
michelleI don't really understand what you are trying to say, but if you transform items at sub-pixel precision without sanpping to the imaginary pixel grid, PS needs to interpolate the edge pixcels, which can result in wrong colors. This may be even more so, if you had pixels near the edges that were almost transparent, but not quite. They may only show up after the transform, so before doing such things, it may be worthwile to double check. The only other problem I can think of are OpenGL problems...

I've noticed that, since downloading CC on its release last year (and keeping consistent with updates), there has been a noticeable unreliability with Smart Guides. I will have a rectangle, for example, that I want to snap to a guide or another shape. The green text will pop up, saying "Guide," so as to let me know it is going to snap to the guide, but it doesn't. I set it down, and it's a nudge or two or three off. Has anyone else encountered this?
I've also noticed a difference in free transforming. It doesn't always happen, but take, for instance, the rectangle in the following series of images. I click it with the Selection Tool once, then attempt to stretch it upward. The bounding box containing the shape is suddenly not form-fitting around the rectangle, and when I stretch, it doesn't stay put the way it should. The bottom edge of the rectangle is moved up, as if the shape is centered within the wrongly-sized bounding box. Is this part of a new feature that I'm not aware of? Would love to get to the bottom of this. It's a hassle having to direct-select the edge I want to pull up.This is what I'm referring to:
As to your second question: don't ask me ... :-)
