Free transform vector hand-lettering

I'm using CS-6 and a Wacom tablet and need to fill an oversized character-outline with hand-lettered names of famous authors (imagine a capital P in Franklin Gothic Demi 1050pt). I'm proficient in PS and ID but somehow can't seem to use the free-transform tool in Ai the way I need to: In order to mold the grouped, hand-lettered author-names, I am trying to select, bend and manipulate so they fit rounded parts of the character outline and fit into certain gaps (see screenshot via PS). I do not want to rasterize the vector graphics and don't seem to have any luck with Ai's sheer and warp functionality of the transform function (resizing being trivial of course). I would really appreciate your help. Thanks!

Fantastic @dougofakkad! Thank you very much.

  • Photoshop CS4 Crash  Free Transform Vector Objects

    Hello!
I've a consistent ad recurring error and I wanted to see if anyone else has it.
The bug happens when I place a vector smart object either an Illustrator file, or pasting from InDesign.
I place the object, and confirm.
Then, when I hit "command t" to free-transform, Photoshop hangs for a second and then crashes.
It happens every time, on every type of Photoshop file, on any type of vector content.
I can place an EPS file, and the error does not occur.
    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same thing happen with CS4 11.0 (I was running 11.0.1 before the crash),
Anytime I hit the transform command tit hangs then freezes... but never recovers. It crashes the whole system and I need to reboot.
Intel iMac,  running OS X 10.5.7
I've trashed preferences, repaired permissions and reinstalled Photoshop (not the entire creative suite).
I used to have CS3, but it's been uninstalled but I'm not pointing the software to any other plugins... so I'm lost.
    Any ideas?

  • Can't warp pasted AI vector Smart Object using Free Transform in PS CS6

    Hi
I pasted a vector object into PS CS6 (13.0.1 x32) today directly from Illustrator CS6 (16.0.1 x32), and selected "Paste as Smart Object" (Windows XP Pro SP3).
I then tried to warp the pasted object using the Free Transform tool by dragging one of the corner handles with CTRL held down (Windows).
This usually warps\distorts the object, but instead, this launched a skew operation.
If I paste as Shape Layer or as Pixels then apply Free Transform, <Ctrl + corner handle drag> performs a warp\distort operation.
Also, if I rasterise the pasted AI object, and then convert to a Smart Object I can warp\distort.
Is it not possible to paste an Illustrator vector in as a Smart Object, and then warp\distort it directly using this technique?
    Thanks for your help.
    Richard

Your right in that on a pasted vector smart one can't warp, distort or perform perspective transforms.
One workaround would be to right click on the vector smart object layer in the layers panel and
    choose convert to smart object.
It depends on what your object is, but you'd probably get better quality from a pasted shape or path, but then you won't be able to open the object
    back in illustrator from photoshop.

  • All of a sudden the transform tool and free transform tool are grayed out and will not allow me to scale, rotate, or do anything to an image I just scaled?

I've been using Photoshop for years, but tonight I ran into an issue that I don't understand. I was working with a file that I had been working with for months. I added a new image and resized it to fit as I needed just as I always have (select layer with image > EDIT > TRANSFORM > SCALE.) All was working fine. I added a second image to the file I was working on (I added it by dragging it into the file from another window just as I had added the first image.) However, this time when I tried to select EDIT > TRANSFORM > SCALE this option was not available to me. Only the FREE TRANSFORM PATH or TRANSFORM PATH options were available. When I selected the SCALE in the TRANSFORM PATH menu (just to see what would happen) it started to scale a completely unrelated layer that DID have a path to it. However, the layer of my image was still selected and NOT the layer with the path. This image layer has no path even on it or around it in any way.  I tried to select the folder layer and the same thing happened. It selected this one path and tried to scale it. I selected the layer I just previously scaled and tried to scale it again and it will only allow me to select the transform path option. I selected it to see again what would happen and once again it selected this completely unrelated path on a completely different layer. WHAT?????  This makes absolutely no sense! I have tried restarting both my computer and PS and it won't stop happening! I really need to get this file finished and uploaded to my developer ASAP so I really hope that someone has some insight as to why this is happening.

  • [CS4] Free Transform doesn't work in some situations

    Hello,
I have found a limitation in Photoshop CS4:
Trying to use the free transform tool on an unselected "substracted" vector shape with the move tool will not work and will always display the alert "Could not transform because the initial bounding rectangle is empty".
There are some workarounds to this (using the Path selection tool, or activating the vector mask), however they won't apply if you are trying to transform several layers at once.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Create a new empty document
    2) Select the rectangle tool (U) and create a vector mask layer with a single rectangle shape
    3) Cmd-click the rectangle to select it
    4) In the Options bar, click the 'substract' button to reverse the shape
    5) Deselect the shape in the layers panel
    6) Select the move tool (V)
    7) Invoke the free transform tool (cmd-T)
    (MBP 2.8, 10.5.5)

It's because you've got a reversed shape and nothing highlighted so your document edges are truncating the color fill rather than a clearly defined edge. Simply highlight the vector mask in the layers panel then you CAN use Free Transform.

  • CS6 Free Transform ctrl drag not working properly

    Anybody on this ...
When I use the free transform tool crtr-T and use the ctrl drag button,  the corners do not extend properly.  It extends universally as aposed to a distorted corner-pull.   I uninstalled CS6 and reinstalled still getting the same result.  Any help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks

What conroy wrote convert a smart object layer to a smart object layer may seem a bit strange but he is correct. All smart object layers are not created equal they may contain many types of smart objects.  An  illustrator vector file placed in can most likely be reopened  in illustrator by double clicking on the layers smart icon in the layers palette and transform the vector object in illustrator and when saved in illustrator the embedded smart object will be updated to reflect the changes made in illustrator.  If you encapsulate a VSO into a Smart Object when you transform the resulting smart object layer it will be transformed like a raster layer using interpolation like all Smart Object layers  are transformed. If you want to transform a layer that contain vector graphics using vector graphics you need to correct tools. Transform I would think would only transform Vector Shape Layer using vectors and change Text layer by changing font size all other layer types would be interpolated.  An embedded smart object the contains many Photoshop layers some which are text and vector layers like a places PSD file may be transform better using Photoshop Image Size and then transforming the resulting updated smart object layer if your increasing the layers size.

  • CS3 Free Transform Tool does not work at all for distortion

I tried everything, worked with vector objects of different configurations and rasterized objects. Nothing works. When I press Free Transform Tool and go to bounding box corner it become rotate or resize tool. When I click a little bit inside the bounding box and hold Command Key (I tried many keys and without keys) it just moves the whole object, it did not select just one point that I need. Envelope Mesh does not work for the same reason, but I do not need mesh tool. I have Illustrator 13.02, Mac OS 10.4.11
The Free Transform Tool functions exactly as the main selection tool. Please help.

I STILL cannot get this to work. I have tried everything suggested in this thread. I have followed the directions in the help menus explicitly. I have tried grouping, ungrouping. I have tried it on type, on type changed to outlines, on simple rectangles. Without success.
When I try to use the free transform tool and hover over a corner of the bounding box, I get either a double-headed corner arrow, a rotation arrow, or a move arrow. Using the first two, dragging the point and then holding down the control/command key results only in a scaling of the object.
Should I restart? Should I re-install? What should I do?
    Best,
    Fielden

  • Feathered edges when using free transform

    Hello
When I apply a free transform to a raster layer or a smart object, the edges of the layer get slightly feathered (1px on each side). To demonstrate, here is a smart object that contains a rectangle shape. Here it is before applying free transform:
And here it is after being scaled down (bear in mind that the anchor point of the transform is set to top left):
Note how the edges are no longer crisp. Normally, I would have to go to the original image document and use the Image > Image Size panel to resize it to what I want and then repaste it to my document, but this is inconveinient and not particularly elegant. I want to be able to do this in my main document without hassle and particularly, I would like the edges of an image to remain clear if I'm free transforming a smart object.
I know that I can set the image interpolation setting to Nearest Neightbor in Preferences > General, but then the result is even worse as far as image quality is concerned.
Is there a way to get around this problem?
    Thank you

To further what Chris has said...  You want both high quality resampling AND pixel-alignment?  Those are competing goals.
One thing you could consider doing, if pixel-alignment is paramount is to use use a rectangular shape (i.e., via a vector mask) and the Snap To Pixels option:

  • Free transform tool is not working

Hi, I'm getting this error every time I try to use the free transform tool, the window doesn't show all the options, the white space where you manipulate the vector has a very low quality image and won't let me move anything. I've tried with diferent objects, files, color profiles and I keep getting the same error, I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro retina display and Illustrator CC.
Any idea of how to fix it?

Sorry, you are right, it is the Free Distort window, here's a comparrison of how it looks like in CS6 and what I'm getting in CC.
    Thank you.

  • Free Transform in PS CC not working properly

The free transform function in Photoshop CC has started corrupting line art or vectors if I resize them. If I start with a crisp image, resize it with the control nodes, and when I hit enter, the lines have gone all squiggly and look like they have low resolution artifacting around them. I'm using PSCC on Win 8.1 - and I have tried setting the image interpolation to every option but still get the same result. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Extension Manager in Adobe CC is hanging on launch for me as well. Ran RemoteUpdateManager but there was nothing to update unfortunately.

  • Elements 9 - how to add the grid over "free transform" to twist an image/layer

    Hi Every one!
Im sure I asked this before, but I cant for the life of me find the post!! I think I must have dreamed it!! (shame I didnt dream the answer lol)
OK so Im now on photoshop elements 9, Is there a way to properly bend and transform a layer? I USED to for to free transform (control
+T) then click on a grid at the top of the screen which ment I could bend any part of the picture...
If I tell you what Im trying to do it might help?
Im trying to bend a rainbow.. at the moment Ive used the rectangle tool and created a rectangle rainbow, but Id like to bend it into shape, maybe even distort it a little to look like this...
    stbanabaspreschool.vpweb.co.uk/default.html

Well, I think the best way to create a rainbow would be to use a vector program, but there's a way to use PSE9 to get a rainbow effect that might be useful.
    Create a new image.
Use the fill tool with a spectrum fill (I used the "Medium" spectrum):
Create a small, tight circular fill:
Zoom in to give yourself room to work on it.
Make a circular selection around the outer edge of the spectrum, invert the selection and delete it:
Make a small circular selection in the center, delete that; make a rectangular selection covering the bottom half and delete that:
Select the spectrum and use Layer...New...Layer via Copy to get the spectrum on its own layer with a transparent background.  Then squish the spectrum:
Rotate the spectrum 90 deg. right and move it to the left of the image area:
Use Filter...Distort...Shear with these settings to pull the spectrum into an arc:
Rotate the spectrum back left, and transform it into something useable:
    The layers look like this:
It ain't perfect, but might be good enough.

  • Free Transform handles

Make the Free Transform handles visible / reachable while zoomed in to your image.
In Free Transform, when you are working  zoomed in and close to the edge of the window, the adjustment handles often end up being pulled out side of the window where you can't see them. Hitting cmd+0 zooms out the window so you can now reach the handles. The problem is when your trying to make small delicate adjustments to get square up a door, or line up elements. Zoomed out to reach the handles you can't see what your doing. When you zoom in to make the small adjustments, now you can't get to the handles. It would be really helpful if I could use the hand tool to move the image until I see the handle when zoomed in.

Mark, I think he means he wants some way to stay fully magnified while in a transform bounding box, but to be able to rotate from within rather than from outside the box AND to have a way to grab corner control points while inside the box. This is something I've asked for too. It would make accurate alignment much easier because you can stay zoomed in and se better.

  • "Anti-alias" greyed out when free-transforming smart objects.

While resizing smart objects, I noticed that the anti-aliasing was  very contrasting and not smooth enough for my purposes. I realized that  if I rasterized the smart object before resizing, the anti-aliasing was  better. I then noticed that there was a setting when free-transforming  smart objects called "anti-alias." However, I am unable to activate it  as it is greyed out. So, here's two questions:
    1) Is there a way to make the anti-aliasing for smart objects the same as that of rasterized objects?
    2) Is there a way to activate that "anti-alias" setting when free-transforming smart objects?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

On top of what Zeno Bokor wrote that while your doing the transform your viewing a quick scaled preview not the actual transformation you wrote
The SOs I'm talking about are bitmap images I made into SOs to be able to resize and edit without destructive changes, not imported vector graphics from AI.
You did not state how you made the bitmap images  into smart object.   If you just converted a layer you had been working on into a smart object some damage may have already been done to the bitmap image.  You might  get better results if you started out with a smart object layer to begin with by using ACR open as smart object option or by placing your camera jpeg images into your document as starting points.

  • Free transform trouble

I cut a 6x4 piece of newspaper into small pieces & spread them face down on a flatbed scanner.
On top of the pieces I put a matte black piece of paper and scanned.
In photoshop I selected, and put each small piece onto its own layer. So each layer had a small piece of newspaper on a transparent background.
Im trying to unite the pieces back to their original state in Photoshop.
Problem: When I rotate one of the images on a layer in FREE TRANSFORM it gets distorted also with the Rotate command. I have seen many tutorials on Free Transform, tried everything, have a good idea how to use itI think. .Please Help

    Andy,
Unfortunately, Photoshop cannot do the CSI magic of taking broken pieces of glass or torn up messages and magically reassemble them. And it would be time consuming to do this as you're attempting with just Photoshop.
My recommendation would be to take the actual pieces, turn them over and assemble them by hand, use a low tack tape to hold them in place and refine their alignment. Then carefully place the reconstructed result onto a flatbed scanner. Scan at a high resolution, touch up the edges in Photoshop and save.
Hope you're not talking about shredder-size pieces...
    Neil
