Free Windows 10 Upgrade

With all of the hype surrounding the announcement about the free Windows 10
upgrade, here are some important qualifications to keep in mind:
Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1
Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in
volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise
outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional
offer terms in coming months.

Thanks for sharing that info, Paul and Q-Tech.
As always, it may still be worth the price for some to buy a DVD that will just simply install (or reinstall) with a product code, no questions asked, no hoops to jump through.
For some reason I have a minor worry that if one were to take advantage of the free upgrade offer then need to make a clean installation (e.g., after a failure) it would be a hassle.  On the other hand, there are System Image backups and recovery
drives for that purpose...  Of course, if one gets into "can't get there from here" trouble there's always the high tech store down the block where a DVD could be purchased.
It'll be interesting to see the final details of these offers - and of course how well recovery works (so far, backing up a System Image to a USB drive seems to be just as effective as before).

  • Resetting my HP Pavilion G Series laptop after Free Windows 10 upgrade..

I recieved the upgrade for the free Windows 10 upgrade on my laptop and upon restarting it the first time I noticed that all the icons and background were gone and the only thing on the black screen was my Advanced System Care Pro Performance Monitor that is always pinned to the desktop luckily, since its the only way to restart my laptop now. I have to restart my laptop 3 times before any icons show up on the screen and then I have about 5-10 seconds to quickly hit the new Windows Start button and then the Settings button and quickly hit the Firefox Logo that is also luckily still working. As soon as I get these two things open  the icons and background stay up for a bit longer, (maybe 20-30 seconds) then the icons and back ground and apps  start flashing in and out in what I have only guessed is the two operating systems are competing because I can only open certain things in Settings menu like Device Manager (which is greyed out) and when clicked brings up an error that reads about a missing element, although, if the icons are still flashing the Device Manager will become black and I am able to click it but I have to get it just right when its flashing to black which I have to do in the 20 seconds. Also, when I try to click the Reset this PC button I can only click it when the icons are still flashing in that 20-30 second window so I have to get there quickly.  Firefox works normally at least. I've posted my issue and the Microsoft Community boards but no one has even tried to answer yet. I want to know if I reset the laptop will it reset to a clean Windows 10? Will that list of all the HP and pretty much every app on the computer going to keep it from working because my grandmother recently passed away and left me her laptop and it doesn't have any disks with it so I can't put all the those apps back on if I do reset. I also get a Runtime Error when I unplug the power cord from the laptop.  I have tried various things like downloading Legacy drivers, new AMD Radeon drivers, all drivers are up to date, starting in safe mode, starting from different boot modes with only start up apps, tried to manually disable apps from the Device Manager one by one, and nothing has worked or changed what is happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok if i were you I'd roll back the installation as I suggested ro whatever platform you were using prior to the windows 10 upgrade. But if you want to spend the  time trying to get to the bottom of it then you could refresh the windows 10 installation while having your machine disconnected from the internet if the problem returns while disconnected from the internet then there's some issue with the windows installation on your machine itself and if I were you I'd roll back to your previous installation and leave it a couple months till they work the bugs out. BUT IF THE MACHINE WORKS FINE DISCONNECTED THEN I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TURN OFF THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE FOR YOUR DISPLAY DRIVERS AS DETAILED IN MY OTHER REPLY.  But if you can't be bothered figuring it out with trail and error and just want to roll back so you have a properly working machine so you can investigate this properly for yourslef then rollback using these steps. CLICK ON START AND SELECT SETTINGS  CLICK "UPDATE &SECURITY" CLICK ON "RECOVERY" AND THEN "GET STARTED" if you can get back to your original installation you can at least then take a note of drivers and their versions and research to see if anyone else has any specific issues with your machine type - I moved up from 8.1 and only had one minor issue and they only people i've seen complaining about major issues are those who upgraded from windows 7 so it maybe worth rolling back so you can at least get more informed. Also before I ran windows 10 I ensured that all the windows updates had been done before hand and that all HP system drivers were done before too. I'm sure this aided my transition but as i commented those who seem to be struggling are those on older hardwares. Let me know if you get it sorted.

  • Objection! Why can't vista home basic be eligible for the free windows 7 upgrade?

It's not fair! If I know only vista home basic cannot be eligible for the free windows 7 upgrade when I bought my T400, I would rather pay more to have other OS. Lenovo have never mentioned this before. I think I should have the right to know my future benefit. Does anyone have the same question about that upgrade program? I feel terrible.

Microsoft has given all OEM's the requirments for the free upgrade to Win 7.
Lenovo is only following Microsoft's guidelines.

  • Bought Computer with Vista and received a free Windows 7 upgrade - can I download Windows 7?

I purchased my computer with Windows Vista and was able to get a free upgrade of Windows 7.  I've scanned my computer for viruses on Microsoft and they find no viruses.  My anti-virus program has scanned the computer and has found nothing.
Yesterday I was trying to install a program and that's when my anti-virus program told me there was a threat.  It removed it  and I kept on with the installation.  After that my Internet Explorer doesn't work and when I go to "Uninstall
Programs" it only shows that I have just Microsoft programs, everything under "M" and nothing else.  I've tried to restore my computer and every time after a restore it gives me an error code 0x80070005.  I've turned off anti-virus
and restored and have even restored in Safe Mode but still get the same error message.  Does anyone know what I can do to get this straightened out??

    Hi,
What is the anti-virus program you have on your computer? Please take a try to uninstall the 3rd party anti-virus program and then perform the system restore under
    system recovery options.
Some 3rd-party anti-virus program might not be incompatible with Windows processes.

  • Windows 7 Pro with KMS activation valid for free Windows 10 upgrade?

    Dear
    following Situation:
    Operating Systems: Windows 7 Pro
    Activated With one KMS key
Now my question: Is it allowed for us to upgrade to Windows 10 for free?
The reason is, when we buy new Clients for the Company, we of course buy them with an OEM license, that we have a valid Windows license, but then we Image the machines with a Software deployment tool. So every System has for our activation the KMS key. Now we would like to make a fresh new Installation of this Clients with Windows 10. This means the actual Windows 7 Pro key, which we bought at the beginning, is not really transfered to Windows 10 because of the Software deployment with one volume license key.
Has anyone knowledge of this topic?
    Kind regards

The hardware used in both the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) have many similarities. Both often involve older systems incapable of running detection tools or monitoring agents due to outdated operating systems, resource limitations, proprietary systems, and odd protocols such as Modbus and DNP3, amongst other restrictions. • Restore Computer Back to Vista after Windows 7 upgrade and back again?

I got Satellite L505-S6946 that came with Vista Home Premium installed (I immediately made backup-5 disks in all). I got the free Windows 7 upgrade disk from Toshiba and upgraded my laptop. I messed up and did not make the backup disks like I should have. I had to reinstall windows 7 more than once (shouldn't let others use my computer!) and it hasn't seem to run quite the same after reinstall. I also noticed that for a driver Intel ICH9 Family SMBus Controller 2930 it says no device driver installed. I didn't notice that before. And I have tried to install it. Whatever the cause, to me it just doesn't seem to run the same. I was wondering if I could go back and reinstall Vista from my disks and then upgrade to windows 7 with my upgrade again (and this time make backup copy!)? I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but I am not really computer savvy. Thank You. Jakey58

Just adding my two cents worth...
We have lots of machines running Windows Vista. (I'm typing this message on one.) They work just fine. I never even consider upgrading them to Windows 7.
Just because the Geeks don't like Vista and just because Microsoft wants you to use the latest and greatest doesn't mean you must upgrade.

I posted a message and it magically disappeared.  Wow, the mods are doing a great job by censoring messages and I wish, really wish, that they worked in the fulfillment center so that we would all have got our supposedly "free" Windows 7 upgrades by now.
    Lenovo, are you listening?

It is a moderated forum with rules about civility and decorum.  If you post something that violates those rules, why is it a surprise when the message is removed or edited?
You can complain, even bitterly, and not be uncivil about it.  Many people have successfully done so within the rules in this very thread.

  • [Desktop 3000 K100] Successful Windows 7 upgrade/install?

    Hi,
I recently decided to move from Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit on my Lenovo Desktop 3000 K100 machine.
I already decided to go with a custom/clean install(I'm experienced in that area), instead of using the upgrade feature.
The question is that, have any of You(the 3000 K100 owners) tried and successfully moved to Windows 7 themselves, and now are happily enjoying the new OS, with no issues?
I've noticed that the K100 system is not listed in the "upgrade capable systems list":
    http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/hk/en/htmls/1256358540190.html
But then again does Lenovo mean the actual "Free Windows 7 Upgrade Program", where they provide you with the free license for intended Windows 7 OS(you do pay for delivery of the Windows 7 dvd though, if I'm correct), or just that the drivers do not exist for the OS.
If it's the second reason, then I believe there's no worries since many articles on the web said that Windows Vista is essentially Windows 7 in a newer candy wrapping. Hence all the drivers should be working fine and be compatible for it.
I also ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisory, and at the beginning it told me that I should upgrade my Vista to SP1 before doing the upgrade. I did so successfully and now the Upgrade Advisory says that I'm set for the Windows 7(Not sure why I had to install SP1 thought, after all I'm doing a clean install). Even all the drivers were checked/marked as compatible for the Windows 7.
Already made all the necessary backups so I'm good there.
I did notice one post on these forums about the owner of 3000 K100 having major problems with Windows 7 upgrade. The post is located here:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/desktop-3000-K100-Windows-7-upgrade-problem-STOP-0x...
He did mention that he had made a bios update, and that might have been the main problem(I never touch bios, nor update it unless it is essential thing to do for me), but then again I may be very wrong about it.
So here I'm asking You, the owner of 3000 K100, if the move from Windows Vista to Windows 7 was smooth for you, or did you encouter problems and therefore should I stay away from that idea?

    HI,
i've a Lenovo 3000 K100 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits : it's working very well. No drivers to install, very stable.

  • Windows 7 Upgrade Question

I am a citizen of Canada, and i have bought a laptop in Taiwan this past week, i was wondering for the free windows 7 upgrade, which location i should chose upon signing up in the windows 7 offers page, and whether I can get it shipped to canada rather then here. Also as a follow up question, On startup of this notebook, I chose english as my OS language, does that mean my windows 7 copy will install in english or just the language of my region (which in this case is chinese).

You should be able to register and have it shipped to Canada. The OS language will be based on initial setup.

  • Home Lab with Domain - Windows 10 upgrade

As long as the OSes that you intend to upgrade to W10 are not volume licenses, then the upgrade process will properly handle the activation and product key details. (If you do an in-place upgrade. You can't overlay a fresh install until you first do an upgrade)

I have a home lab setup with 2012 R2 DC. All of my Windows machines both physical and virtual are joined to the Domain setup here. They're currently running a mix of Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro. Will I be able to get the free Windows 10 upgrade for these? None of them are currently showing the "Get Windows 10" app icon.

  • Windows 10 upgrade was in progress - WIll not boot - Completely black screen

I have seen this problem before with my laptop. Under Windows 7, I would simply disconnect the power cord from my laptop and remove the battery. Then I would wait a few seconds, replace the battery and plug the power cord back in. My laptop would then boot up windows 7. Over the past few years, I have only had to do this two or three times. Yesterday, from the task bar tray at the bottom of my Windows 7 desktop,  I found that my free Windows 10 upgrade was available from Microsoft and that an installation could be scheduled. I followed all the prompts until I reached the Windows 10 upgrade screen that said "Working on it" with a large spinning icon. I waited for several minutes when I assumed that it was probably loading the new OS.  I left my laptop alone for several hours. Today I went to start my laptop and I can hear the fan, the usual self-test noise from one of the drives, but nothing at all on the screen. Pitch black. I removed the battery and unplugged. Replaced battery and plug. Pressed the on button. But there is never anything on the screen at any moment. No cursor, logos, absolutely nothing. I don't have a reboot or repair disk. If someone can offer a suggestion, I will be very grateful.

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup.  I know that you had already reset the Notebook, I would suggest following this document and performing a hard reset. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. I also have a couple troubleshooting documents for you called Computer Does not Start and Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot.  You could also Test for Hardware Failures. The HP System Diagnostics provides access to a comprehensive set of tests to check for hardware failures.  Do you see any LED Lights blinking/flashing on the Notebook? If so here is a document called Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code.  Hope this helps!

  • Your Windows 7 upgrade program failure

    TO Lenovo, Microsoft, Mentor Media;
        You FAILED!
Your Windows 7 upgrade program has FAILED badly. I bought a Lenovo desktop PC a couple of months ago on the PROMISE that I would receive a FREE Windows 7 upgrade. I have found that it is impossible to ascertain the status of the order or shipment.
YOU set certain EXPECTATIONS that YOU failed to live up to. YOU could help alleviate this problem by COMMUNICATING with your customers via an effective ONLINE mechanism. YOU have FAILED to do that.
I would suggest that you watch these advertisements to help remind you of what it is to be a PC and that your competitors seem to crave my business more than you.

I think you are being a little harsh here. How exactly has lenovo failed you? Have you submitted an upgrade request? Have you tried to call lenovo support about the issue? The Upgrade process seemed pretty clear to me from the home page. Perhaps you could provide more details on what happened in your situation, instead of flaming lenovo. I am sure that someone here can help you get your upgrade sorted out.
Perhaps you can check out this post. It gives you the steps required to check on your order status

  • Problem with connecting to free wifi after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8

    Hi
I had problems with connecting to free Wifi after upgrading my PC(Notebook) to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. As I travel a lot within europe, I am used to being able to connect to Free Wifi(those that dont need a key or password to enter) but soon after downloading
Windows 8.1 I almost never was able to do this. I'd always get «LIMITED» even though the signal was strong. This was so fustrating,so much so that I reset my PC to clear it of Windows 8.1 and am now back to Windows 8.This is a shame because I was really liking
using Windows 8.1 and if not for this problem(which is a big one) I'd still be using it. If I download Windows 8.1 again from the Windows store what is the probability that I'll have the same problems?
    Thanks Portozzygirl

More often than not when a device isn't working it is because the driver has become corrupted. Re-installing a fresh copy should help
