Freehand Crashing

Yesterday, after working for several hours, I tried to type
something and Freehand 11.0 crashed. Not unheard of, so I
relaunched the program. Crashed again. And again and again and
again. I tried a different file - crash. Every time I try to use
the type tool the program crashes. I restarted the computer. I
turned the computer off and let it sit for a while. Still crashing.
(Font is my usual default Helvetica. I don't think that's the
problem.)
My next step is to reinstall the software. But I don't know
if I need to uninstall it or just trash it? One of my coworkers
suggested trashing the preferences, but I can't find them! Any
thoughts?

I think you have a corrupted font or font cache problem. A
font can work
fine in applications that don't access font outlines, but
cause a crash in
applications, like FreeHand, that do.
Use a font utility such as Font Book or a third-party font
manager to verify
your fonts. If necessary, replace your Helvetica font file
with a fresh copy
from an archived backup.
Use a font utility such as Font Nuke or Yasu to clean out
your font caches
and try again.
If you create a new document and select a different font
before creating any
text, does FreeHand crash?
Do you have two or more versions of Helvetica on your system?
Is the version
of Helvetica that your are using Postscript, TrueType or
OpenType or the
Mac's .dfont? It may be that the version of Helvetica, that
was used when
your FH new document template was created, is no longer
available on your
system.
It might help to trash your FreeHand Preferences. They can be
found on a Mac
here:
Users/(Username)/Library/Application Support/ Macromedia/

Freehand crashes when printing

I am running a site liscence of Freehand 10 on a variety of
Macs from iBookG4's to Mac Minis, all running OS 10.4. On some
computers I experience a problem printing Freehand documents. All
coomputers are loaded with the same copy of Macromedia Suite and
all are printing to the same HP color inkjet. The problem occurs
when you try to adjust the document size to letter in the page
setup window in Freehand. This causes a Freehand crash on some of
the computers. Relaunching and restarting does not solve the
problem. Has anyone encountered this oddity? Is there a fix?

Have you tried making a pdf from the Freehand file and see if
that prints?

Freehand crashes in Snow Leopard when opening files

If you have the problem of Freehand MX etc crashing when opening files in Snow Leopard then this is for you.
In the Freehand application folder is a application callled (Freehand Clip Art Viewer) open this and use it to navigate to you file location, have Freehand open. Then just double click on the thumbnail of your file and it will open without any crash report.
Would pay to add this to the dock beside the Freehand Icon.
After an hour on the phone help desk advised me that freehand has been upgraded to Illustrator... Some people dont want this and i hope its helps a few hardcore Freehand nutters :-)

I've come across a few old-version FH files with missing fonts that would crash FH.
I use FontAgent Pro, with auto-activation turned on, as my font manager. Usually there's no problem. FAP activates unactivated fonts and the file opens properly.
However, I think that Snow Leopard sometimes incorrectly deals with font info in old FH files, and this can lead to a crash.
I find that if I open the FontAgent Pro application window first, and then open the problem file in FH, there's no crash. I get Freehand's 'missing font' dialog and am able to select an alternate font.

Why does Freehand crash right after opening?

I've been working on a FH mx document on my imac with OS 10.6.2. It's 30 some pages and I'm in the process of converting it from English to French. All was going relatively well until about page 25 when suddenly it crashed. I tried to reopen and FH crashed on opening. Transferred the file to my old mac, opened the file fine and resaved it, transferred it back. It opens now, but as soon as I move the page over to the right (left seems ok), it crashes again. When I try resizing using keyboard command 0, it does that but as soon as I try another, say command 2, it crashes. I've removed all fonts from the USER > LIBRARY > FONTS file. I've tried rebooting. I've tried resaving the file when it opens before moving anything. I tried opening the file through Freehand Clip art viewer as someone had suggested, still crashed. I haven't changed any fonts in the document. The English version opens no problem. I haven't changed any of the photos or any graphics in the document, just the text.
Any suggestions anyone???

I don't have an answer but another crash on launch issue. I hava new 27 inch imac running Snow leopard 10.6.2. I got FreeHand 11 running great for the last two weeks. I always got an error on launch saying " Colors picker error. " Invalid color file. I click OK and it worked anyways. Today FreeHand launches and then quits when I click OK on the error. I reinstalled freeHand with no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Freehand MX Crash

Can anyone help me? I have serious problems printing some
documents on Freehand MX, when I try to clic on the advanced field
in the print screen Freehand crashes, and reboot don't resolve the
problem. Someone knows a way to fix this trouble?

Are the computers identical?
FreeHand creates a preview of documnet to advanced settings
dialog. If the document has a big image it will require some
processing. If the image is compressed (lzw) even more. Therefore
too little free disk space or free memory may caus problems as well
as all running programs and memory resident programs.
Sometimes it is very difficult to find the source of the
problem. Long time ago I had a PageMaker document that did not
print. I found out that it was caused by an object that had cmyk
color which included 10% yellow. Any other precentage like 9% or
15% printed well. Go figure.

10.6.8 Finder keeps crashing/hanging

Hi.
I'm running 10.6.8, Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon. (purchased June 2007)
Problems started about a month or so ago when my finder crashed a few times, and my external HD dismounted. This happened a few times, then my ex HD totally fried (corrupted)
Then my computer (sans ex HD) totally froze. Usually I would leave it on for days - and when I came to work one morning the screen saver had frozen.
I tried to hard restart, but the screen just loaded to grey - but I could move the curser.
I called my techie who went through diagnostics and eventually came up with the idea that it was a faulty video card, which was replaced, unfortunately with a faulty one! which created lines across the screen. (before I had NO visual probs on my screen) Yet another one was replaced but the finder keeps crashing.
It can be trying to empty the trash - and the trash progress bar just hangs - or the wheel of death comes up. I can still access my programmes but nothing on the desktop etc.
I have bought a new Ex HD and sometimes when I'm accessing it the finder will hang - or I'll get the wheel of death, having to hard restart each time.
I have sent my machine in to the techies and had a clean reinstall of the system - and got it back a few hours ago - and it's started again!
So far today (all within a few hours)
1. Freehand crashed on start - had to restart computer in order for it just to open.
2. I've noticed sometimes on restart I don't hear the chime.
3. Entourage crashed
4. Wheel of death on Finder - tried to relaunch but then said: Finder not found x2
5.Copying from ex HD and coping hanging - finder crashed - wouldn't realauch - had to hard restart
I have tried to delete the finder prefs and relaunch but that didn't seem to make a diff.
By the way - a few months ago - I got a brand new RAM installed and my external HD works fine on my laptop with no probs at all??
Please may someone help me or give me some advice on a solution - it would be really appreciated!

Do you think it could have something to do with my extrenal HD? As the Finder freezes/hanging to happen majority when I have it mounted? But it seems to work fine on my MacPro Book with not a signal crash etc (touch wood!) Could it be the port o something? Sorry, clutching at straws
I've also got another internal drive installed for my Time Machine backup - but have never had a prob with that.

Cannot open Photoshop documents FreeHand?

Just reinstalled Leopard.
I can no longer open Photoshop (PS) Documents with Freehand 10 or MX Freehand. All I get is a black box or a string of incoherent colors etc.
I use Freehand for creating objects which is harder to do in PS. Likewise I export Freehaqnd items to Photoshop for distribution to my publisher. Everything was working very nicely until after I reinstalled the OS X system.
What do I need to do to restore things to proper working order????

Check to see if you've made a change to your Photoshop preferences. You'll need to save with preview on, no compression.
What do you mean?
I restored the com.adobe.Photoshop.plist preferences and the com.macromedia.freehand.10.plist using the Mac Time Machine. I used copies from a date when Freehand would open Photoshop documents.
Freehand now opens some small PSDs that are not too large and that were primarily created in Freehand and then saved in Photoshop. Also these files were created while the import function was working.
Freehand crashes when I drag a PSD over the Dock Icon. Freehand also crashes when 50mb PSD files are attempted.
Any help will be appreciated.

FHMX Crashes When Importing and Saving

I am using one of the 24" iMacs and FreeHand crashes whenever
I Save As (it doesn't happen when I save over a file that I've
started and saved previously). I am also trying to save directly to
a Network drive. It doesn't crash as much when I save to my
desktop, but it HAS done it, so I don't know if it has to do with
the Intel Processors, the version of Mac OS, or the fact that I'm
saving to a Network, or something that I haven't thought of.
It also crashes when I try to import items into a FH
document, regardless of where those files are saved.
If anyone has any suggestions or advice, please let me know!
I have a major project due today and I can't afford to waste any

Hi watermelonpatty!, I don't have much experience with the
new intel macs so this is not a solution to the 'save as" crashes,
but here's a couple of ideas that could save you from losing your
work:
1. before you try to save the file, you could use export to
save the freehand file first just as a safeguard.
2. if you drag and drop items directly from the finder into a
FH page does it crash?, if not you could use this method for the
time being until you find a more permanent fix.

Defaults template grayed out, getting generic template instead of custom

Suddenly, (after a Freehand crash) when I go to open a "New" Freehand document, the custom "Defaults Ltr" template I set up is gone, and I get a more generic template. When I try to select the "Defaults Ltr" template as my default in Preferences, it is grayed out, and if I try to recreate the old template, and save it as "Defaults Ltr", it won't let me do it. (Well, it does, but it is still grayed out if I try to reselect it in Preferences). I seem to recall fixing this by trashing some preference files once, a long time ago, but that didn't work this time.
Freehand MX, Mac G4, 10.4.11

I've answered my own question - with the help of Freehand Help.
I needed to take the "Template" I saved, Get Info on it, and check the "stationery pad" box. All is well now.
Strange that I never had to do this before, though.

Files made in OSX 10.4.11 crash FreeHand when opening in OSX 10.6.2

I changed computers last fall from one running OSX 10.4.11 to one running OSX 10.6.2 and with the help of this forum and someone at Apple, got FreeHand MX 11.0.2 to open and run without crashing.
Today I tried to open some old files created on the old computer/OS and the app crashes on launch or, after launching, when trying to open one of these older files. Any thoughts? Similar experiences?

Just answered my own question after poking some more:
1. Select the file
2. Get Info [ -I]
3. Change "Open with:" drop down selection to FreeHand MX (if it already shows as the drop down selection, actively select it again).
4. Close the window
That's it!

Canon MP610 crashes Freehand MX - PLEASE HELP.

Hey Everyone.
I just bought the Canon MP610 Inkjet printer.
*Day 1, I installed all the supplied Canon Software, drivers etc.*
Tested the printer from Freehand MX, Apple Mail, etc - and it worked brilliantly.
*Day 2, Freehand MX started acting up.*
When I open the print dialog box in Freehand MX and hit the "ADVANCED" button -
I only get the very basic print options. Previously I got all the options where I could select papersize, cutmarks, registration marks, etc.
*Freehand also crashes straight after I hit the print button!*
I have trashed Freehand MX and re-installed it from crash and I still get the same problem.
I'm thinking that it's a PPD issue, but I'm not smart enough to be sure.
Any advice on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

PS: I've tried reinstalling and doing maintenance routines using onyx with no success.

I updated the software successfully, but didnt help solving the problem, all of the ilife software crash a few seconds after launched.

Freehand MX crashes when trying to open Freehand 10 files

Hello,
I hope someone out there has some suggestions. I need to open
some Freehand 10 documents in Freehand MX. When I try to open the
FH10 files in Freehand MX it crashes. The icon it self looks like a
blank page as if MX doesn't recognize it. I reinstalled FH10 and am
able to open the files so I know the files aren't corrupt. My
dilema is I need to merge the information that is in the FH10 file
with the new Freehand MX file. It used to work so I don't know why
Freehand MX isn't working anymore. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.

Try to export to .inx (InDesign Interchange-Format) and open that file in InDesign CS5.

Freehand keeps crashing!

I need some help!
I've been using Freehand v 11.0.2 for some time now, but recently I was having issues with my copies of Windows and installed Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit and reinstalled the same Freehand disc. The program opens fine but when I click File and try to browse for something or am lucky enough to open a file and try to save it, I get the following error message:
"Freehand MX.exe has stopped working", followed by "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".
The program crashes.
I read online that 11.0.2 is compatabile up to XP, but others say it works fine on Windows 7 Home. Could there be a program conflicting with this? Just curious.
Any help would be appreciated.
I really love Freehand and need to use it again.

We are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
A temporary workaround is to uninstall and reinstall Adobe Reader (instead of updating it to 11.2.0).

Freehand 10 crashes when printing

Using Freehand 10
I'm using an Epson 88 Mac 10.5.8.
I had just replaced a cartridge when the problem began.
I was printing ordinary colored objects.
Freehand instantly crashes on print command.
How do I fix it?

Have you tried making a pdf from the Freehand file and see if
that prints?
