FreeHand has a new App Icon

John Nack at Adobe has published a color wheel of ALL the
redesigned application icons and color schemes.
See
it here
If you look in the south west quadrant you will see the FH of
FreeHand Icon. Is this good news for the future?

> and last night while trying the PS CS3 beta I felt that
the interface is actually similar to FHMX.
I really don't don't see how you get that. Sounds like alot
of *really* wishful thinking to me.
It looks to me that all they've done is given PS (and
presumably the other CS3 apps) a new palette docking interface.
This is something Illustrator--in typical Illustrator fashion--has
been years behind. But PS and InD already have palette docking
ability; they just didn't match. So now Adobe is (again,
presumably) building the "next generation" of the "unified Adobe
interface", which if history tells, they will probably consider
"locked in" for at least several years thereafter. If this is all
the hullabaloo is about, we're in for another many years of
behind-the-times Adobe interface, because while this would be an
improvement for AI, it is little more than a facelift for PS and
InD.
To say this is "similar to FreeHand" or even similar to the
Macromedia structure is a far stretch. There is nothing original in
the idea of simply docking palettes to the right edge of the main
monitor. The main principle that separates the MM interface scheme
from Adobe's is the use of the "contextual inspector"
organizational model, which is followed in all the MM apps. I see
nothing to indicate that in the PS3 layout. It's just the same old
palettes now able to dock in a way different from the rather
half-baked palette docker in the previous version. What's the big
deal?
The original Adobe Creative Suite apps (AI, PS, InD) all
still cling to the long-outdated model wherein you have many
separate palettes for all the separate attributes of the selection.
That's much more tolerable in a raster imagng program, because
raster imaging is not nearly so "object oriented" as page layout
and vector illustration. That is, even with all the bells and
whistles that have been added to Photoshop over the ages, you are
still working with one raster image--or a subset selection of
pixels in that one image--at a time. Yes, PS nowadays stacks
several images with the same resolution on top of each other and
calls them "layers." And in recent years, it even allows you to
place vector clipping paths within those "layers" and calls them
"shape layers."
But that's all still a far cry from the object-oriented
nature of vector drawing programs.
Way, way back (when was it? FH3? FH5.5?), FH was rebuilt upon
the more modern (and profoundly more efficient) "contextual
inspector" model. From that day forward, you no longer had to go
scouring all over a kazillion separate palettes to set the selected
path's fill, stroke, overprint attributes, etc., etc. It is all
right there in the fully contextual Inspector Palette. (It was
actually called the "Inspector Palette" back then. It was changed
to Object Properties when a stylistic uniformity was applied across
the other and newer MM apps.)
The only CS app which comes close to a true inspector-baed
interface is the one Adobe didn't author: GoLive. (We won't even
get into Acrobat's completely arbitrary interface, which
matches--well--nothing.)
When MM stylistcally unified the interfaces, it also made
them dockable to the right edge of the main monitor. But that
docking aspect is a far less important difference from the old
fashioned interface scheme than the functional reorganization of
the contextual inspector model.
*That's* the crucial difference between MM's stylistically
unified interface and Adobe's. This is best seen by comparing not
the schemes of FH and PS3; but those of FH and AI:
Setting mere palette docking aside, In both programs you
still have a separate palette for mixing colors, for storing
swatches, for defining styles, etc. But the real difference is both
subtle and profound. In AI, those individual palettes don't only
create and store all those myriad settings, but they must be used
to *view and apply* them.
In FH, you work far more efficiently by using the various
palettes to create and store settings, but you *view and apply*
them in the context of the current selection in the all-inclusive
and much more informative Object Properties palette. Defined
(stored) swatches automatically appear as selections in the
Properties pallette's popup menu. Same for styles, brushes, stroke
weights, overprint attributes--you name it.
The Object Inspector becomes your one-stop-shop for
everything you need to know about the current selection. It tells
you the number of points in the path; the effects applied; its
position and dimensions; its overprint attributes, its applied
styles, and on and on. So it tells you everyting about the
selection that AI's Appearance Palette does, but much much more and
in a much more concise and organized way (and in less space).
It is fully cotextual. For example, subselect some points and
you can change them from corners, curves, or connectors; retract or
extend their handles, right there in the same place you looked for
whole-object attributes: the Properties Palette.
Understand this is quite different from a limited "control
bar" like AI CS2's much ballyhooed but anemic Control Palette. That
kind of thing merely shows you a grab-bag collection of someone's
idea of the "most commonly needed" settings. For example, you still
have to dig for the ill-conceived Attributes palette to see if one
of the object's fills or strokes is set to overprint; or to a
buried sub-menu selection of the Document Info palette to see its
number of points.
That last is a good example. I ask you: What would compel a
new AI user who wants to know the number of points in a path, or
whether it is open or closed, to go look for something called the
Document Info palette?
Do you see what I mean? AI's dated, scattered, and cluttered
interface is what makes it so difficult for new users. New users
then mistakenly perceive "difficult" as "sophisticated" or
"powerful" when in fact quite the opposite is true. Proficient FH
users know this. The better organizational scheme which makes
finding settings more understandable and less frustrating for
newcomers also makes every moment of every workaday situation more
efficient and less tedious for proficient users--even long after
they've learned where all that information resides in AI.
The closest thing AI has to the concept of an object
inspector is not its Control Palette, but its Appearance palette.
But this also falls very short. It now shows the weight of each
stroke, and whether it is set to overprint, but doesn't let you
*change* those attributes. It doesn't tell you what its color
values are, or what kind of endcaps and joins it has. It indents
the individual strokes, fills, and effects under its item type
(path, compound path), but clicking that item type listing doesn't
provide the object-level attributes ( number of points,
open/closed, winding rule).
So AI's Appearance Palette and Control Palette are both mere
*pretenders* (and strain) to a proper object inspector, but both
leave so much out that they end up *adding to* the overall
palette-glut rather than serving to alleviate it. Neither of them
can be trusted to provide information complete enough to let you
chose to leave other palettes closed.
The difference has little to do with style. It has everything
to do with organizational efficiency. That's why just giving AI
dockable palettes (although long overdue) will still fall very very
short if it is not accompanied by the other side of the coin: a
thorough and careful rework of its functional organization.
I take no encouragement at all in the PS3 preview to suggest
that Adobe now "gets it" about the true advantage of their acquired
MM apps' interfaces. In fact, quite the contrary.

  • App world new app icon

I have the Torch 9850 and this morning I got an icon in the tray on top of the screen saying I had 1 new app upgrade but when I go into App world I have no upgrades.  I did a battery pull and the icon still shows up.  I deleted app world and reinstalled and it still is showing 1 app upgrade.  I checked each app I had for upgrades and none have one.  Then when I deleted App World and reinstalled it now I have no apps listed in App world as installed.  How do I fix this?

  • How can you tell if an iPod touch has the new apps?

Having seen the updates to the ipod Touch I'm finally ready to buy one. From the keynote I gather that new units shipping from the factory after 15 Jan have the new software, old units do not and, unusually for apple, even if you buy an old software unit after the announcement, you don't get the software for free. Worse still, I'm in one of those countries they sell the touch, but don't have an iTunes store, so if I buy an old one, I'm stuck with it, cannot upgrade.
Is there any way to tell from the box which version you have, change in part number, anything? I'm sure they aren't doing the M$ sticker approach "now with 1.1.3 and lots of new apps". The return policy out here in Singapore is basically you can't, so I need to figure out in the store if the box I'm buying is new, or old, and I have no clue at all how much stock is left out there.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello,
If you're going to buy in a real shop then why not have the retailer open the box for you. Especially if they don't do returns - that's a must.
The next suggestion is a little more hit-and-miss but the fourth and fifth digits of the Serial Number are the week of production. If you get a week 02 or later it should be okay. Perhaps someone with a brand new one could confirm.

  • Dock has replaced some app icons with question marks

  • App icons won't update

After update to an app which has a new icon also (i.e. new version of Reeder) I have still an old icon on my iPhone and in iPhone Apps tab in iTunes. In iTunes Apps menu I can see a brand new App icon. Reboting iPhone didn't help. Any suggestions, please?

    Hi Matorresjr,
The Updates will stay listed in your update screen. This is so that if you have "Automatic Updates" turned on, you will be able to see what apps have updated and when. If it says "Open" it means it has successfully updated. You will notice that new updates are under a lable called "Available Updates" while updated (Open) apps are listed in groups by the date which they were updated.
Not sure how long they stay there, but they are intended to stay long enough for people to be able to see what has and has not been updated in their apps.
The sizing problem for wallpaper is a known issue that is undoubtedly being worked on by Apple.
    Cheers,

  • I purchased new apps on itunes just downloaded to a new computer and want to add them to an iphone with apps already loaded.

The tutorial says to check Sync Apps and drag the new app icons onto iphones.  Problem is I get a warning when I click Sync apps that doing so erases all the apps in the iphone and replaces them with the new ones.  Since this is a new itunes, it does not have the iphone apps already purchased downloaded.  How do I add these apps and sync my iphone?

You don't. Backup your itunes library on the old computer and move it to the new computer.

  • What is the meaning, or significance, of the greyed out word "installed" next to the iBooks app icon in the iTunes list of apps on my new iPhone6, or slightly older iPad mini, retina display?

What is the meaning, or significance, of the greyed out word “installed” next to the iBooks app icon in the iTunes lists of apps on my new iPhone6, or slightly older iPad mini, retina display?  Both devices have iOS8.0.2 installed.  Both are having problems downloading some books that had been purchased previously for other devices.  And, before installing iOS8, the full list of had been downloaded to the iPad mini with iOS7.
Finding out what the greyed outness means may help me figure out how to get all my books loaded on both devices.  Any suggestions how to do that also would be appreciated.

Thank you.  Your explanation of why the word "installed" is greyed out makes sense.  But that raises the further question of why then is it shown at all.  There are other apps on both devices that can not be removed, and they are just not shown.  This is the only app that has the greyed out "install" notation.  All of the other apps shown are either identified by "remove" meaning it is installed and can be removed; "install" meaning it is not installed but can be; or "update" meaning it has been replaced by a more current version which can be installed.
All of the books that I want to install have been on an iPhone4 that was replaced by the iPhone6, and were on the iPad Mini with iOS7 before iOS8 was installed.  Installation of iOS8 on the iPad removed all of the books and only a few of them were later added by syncing with iTunes.  Since most of the books I am interested in are free or of small cost, I would be happy to delete all of them from iTunes and then reinstall the ones I want directly on the devices.  But I have not been able to delete them and when I try to install them on a device I am told that they already have been downloaded.  Very frustrating.

  • I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.

  • How do I side load my new app to test it when it has the same product ID? I'm going from Pro to Enterprise?

I have created a "new" app (enterprise level) and downloaded the IPA file. I opened iTunes and put the app in the apps folder, then connected my iPad and clicked sync. It shows up in the newsstand but grayed out and as an app icon. This app has the exact product ID as our PRO version. This enterprise app is going to replace our Pro app. What am I over looking or missing? I have been looking at the Adobe publishing companion guide for iPad and  iTunes connect… There isn't this scenario in any of the documentation.
    Melissa

You have an Enterprise DPS account. Your app type is Multi Folio with Entitlement and iTunes Subscription, which is available only to Enterprise customers. You'll be able to add custom stores and libraries, set up direct entitlement, and take advantage of all DPS Enterprise features. See Creating Proof of Concept Apps for DPS | Adobe Developer Connection for info about adding Enterprise features to a developer app.
Obtaining an Enterprise certificate from Apple is a separate matter. You need an Apple Enterprise developer license ($299/yr instead of $99/yr). Does your company have an Enterprise license with Apple?

I have an iphone 4S, just downloaded the new iOS7 software.  Most of my  apps are gone, but still installed on the phone.  How do I get the app  icons back?

Try rebooting your iPad and see if they reappear.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If they still do not show up, make sure hat you don't have content restrictions set that could prevent certain apps from showing up on your iPad. Settings>General>RestrictionsAllowed Content.
if you still don't see them, connect your iPad to iTunes on your computer and you should see them in the iPad mini screens on the right side of iTunes after the iPad has been selected under "devices" and when you are in the apps pane of iTunes.

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.
