Freehand to PDF

I am not a big Freehand user and only use it when I have to
(like when a client gives me a file to work on), so I am not too
hot on how to use it. I am in that situation now, I have been gien
a Freehand MX file to rebrand and change some images.
I have done all the changes but when I save it to a hi res
PDF ready for print, the imported image is all blocky on screen
(pixelated). It looks fine in Freehand and the import to PDF
settings are correct.
Can some one let me know what I might be doing wrong.
Regards
Paul

It sounds like you used RGB Raster Effects set to 72 ppi,
which is too low
for printing. Go to
File>Document Settings>Raster Effects Settings
Set to a higher resolution suitable for the kind of printing
you will be
doing.
Be aware that Raster Effects are in RGB mode only and may not
print as
expected to process (CMYK) output. In addition, Raster
Effects convert
vector art to raster art upon export, so the artwork will not
be as
scaleable as vector graphics.
FreeHand's PDF Export capability is quite limited. See this
technote for
more information.
http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_13496
The preferred method to create a PDF file for commercial
printing is to
print from FreeHand to a Postscript file and use Acrobat
Pro/Distiller to
create the PDF.

  • FreeHand Mx PDF import problem

Using FreeHand Mx. PDFs created from Acrobat 5.0 imported
into FreeHand Mx just fine. Recently updated to Acrobat 8.0 Pro and
the PDFs created from that version do NOT import into FreeHand Mx.
I get no error messages, but there is also no image -- the page is
blank and the file can be closed and you get no prompt to save.
Aren't these (FreeHand and Acrobat) both Adobe products?
Seems like they should work together and that Acrobat 8.0 Pro
should not have removed functionality that existed in a previous
    Acrobat version.
    Anyone got a fix?

In Acrobat/Distiller you can have it save PDFs as 5.0
    compatible.
    or
If you have Illustrator you can open there first then save as
Illustrator 8, then open in FH.
Technically they are both Adobe "owned" products but FreeHand
    has never
been developed or even upgraded by Adobe, it is truly still a
    Macromedia
    product, not Adobe.

  • Transfering Drawings From FreeHand to pdf- Lines are Blurry

I am working on a catalog. I've drawn up everything in freehand but when I pull them into my pdf they looked blurry. The drawings look fine in freehand, however. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

You could check your Acrobat Preferences > Smoothing. If the lines are still vectors you may want to uncheck smoothing for line art.
That said, I'm sure you're also concerned about how your clients view the catalog. You might want to use heavier lines, or an other method of section division such as color blocks, that will view nicely on other computers.

  • Can't Print from Freehand via Adobe Driver

For no obvious reason I can no longer print from Freehand to pdf using the Adobe driver.
I'm using Freehand 11.0.1 on Windows 7 (64-bit).  Our team has the same problem on Windows XP with Freehand 11.0.1, and Windows 7 (32-bit) with Freehand 11.0.2.  All of the above stopped working this week.  We still can print to pdf using Cute PDF.  But we really would like to get back to using Adobe which gives us more control over the output generated.
Here is the content of Adobe log file:
---------- start of log file ----------------

    Stack:

    false
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
----------- end of log file ----------------
The problem does not occur using the same Adobe print driver with MS Word, PowerPoint, or Adobe Illustrator CS6.
Has anyone else seen this or have a clue how to resolve it?
Any help is very much appreciated!!!!!
    Thanks!

Did you update your Acrobat/Distiller application before it stopped working? My first thought was that something was changed last week to have this happen and to go back and recreate what that might have been. Sounds like an Adobe update.

  • Overprint Text in PDF export

I am using Freehand MX 11.0.2 on Mac Leopard 10.5.2
In a couple of circumstances I noted that black text (100%K),
even when "overprint" is selected at the text's color palette, and
the layout exported as PDF (CMYK), but the black text does not
overprint – at least when I check opening the PDF in
Photoshop, the black text there is spared on the background.
Did others note the same problem or am I just doing something
    wrong here...?

Thomas, you are doing nothing wrong. Freehand's PDF Export
    function is not
    suitable for professional printing jobs.
See this technote. The last line of the technote refers to
    your problem.

    Get Adobe Acrobat Pro/Distiller.
From Freehand, print to a Postscript file. In Freehand's
    advanced print
settings, ensure that the correct PPD has been selected. Use
    either the
'Adobe PDF' PPD or the PPD of the Postscript printer that
    will be used to
    print the document.
Then use Distiller with 'Press Quality' settings to convert
    the Postscript
    file to PDF.

  • Creating Pdf problems

    Hi
I have a problem with creating pdf from freehand file that include jpg image imported from photoshop. While creating pdf the imported image (which is in colores) inverted to greys and the image getting some ugly strips (not smooth).
I tried to import other image formats but with no lack. it's work the same with creating a ps file and theb a pdf through the distiller.
i will appriciate any help or tips with this
    thanks
    Yana

I don't know why a color jpg file would export to PDF as grayscale. Open it in Photoshop and check to make sure it's a normal JPEG file without compression or clipping paths.
In FreeHand's PDF export settings, image compression will reduce the quality of the image. That may be the cause of the banding.
You should be aware of the many limitations to FreeHand's PDF export feature. See this technote.
    http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_tn_13496_en-us
Printing to a Postscript file and using Distiller to create the PDF is a much better way to work. In that case, make sure that you have selected "Adobe PDF" or a color Postscript printer in the Print dialog. If you select a monochrome printer, then the PS file will be formatted for that printer and color images will be converted to grayscale.

  • Trying to placing clear cut tiffs over cropped tiffs in Freehand - please help!

    Hi there,
I'd be extemely grateful if anyone out there can help me!  I'm having a little trouble with my freehand product catalogue.
I've managed to figure out how to import tiffs into freehand as clear cut images (which are my products) without the background showing.
And now I'm trying to lay some of those clear cut tiffs over simply cropped tiffs (which are just large photos).
This all looks fine until I export to PDF... now when I look at the pdf the large photo sitting under the clear cut product looks a bit wierd around the area of the clear cut product tiff.
Does anyone know why and what I can do about it?
    I'm a little desperate!
    thanks!
    Message was edited by: webdesignme

Are you mixing RGB and CMYK images or output?
If this catalogue intended for offset printing, then everything should be CMYK. If it's for web viewing, then everything should be RGB.
Freehand's PDF export is quite unreliable in the area of color handling. If the catalogue is for offset printing, then I strongly recommend that you print to a Postscript file and Distill with Acrobat Pro/Distiller. Alternately, you could open the file in Illustrator CS4 or later and save as PDF from there.

  • Freehand-Dateien

  • Win Freehand can't create PDFs correctly

Any help with the problem below would be much appreciated.
We recently upgraded to Freehand MX (11.0.2) running on 3
Windows (XP) machines but we can't create a pdf file where the
fonts are included correctly using the print to pdf option.
Freehand will also not produce a PS file for printing correctly as
the fonts are also not being included. We have checked all of the
include font options but still they do not appear to be included in
the file. Also, copy and pasting from the created pdf file creates
    gibberish.
Within the pdf's document preferences the fonts show up as:
    Gen.Frutiger-45-Light (Embedded Subset)
    Type: Type 1
    Encoding: Custom
Within the actual document page the font appears to have been
substituted with an equivalent. Outputting to an EPS also has the
same problem. And, the problem also occurs with all fonts. Freehand
    9 still works OK.
So far all Adobe have said is that Freehand just doesn't
work: 'Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about this as
Freehand is a discontinued product and the compatability between
Freehand and Acrobat will not be updated'.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be much
appreciated as at the moment Freehand MX is just unusable and
Adobe's opinion seems to be so what.
    Thanks in anticipation

I have had the same problem in the past. In the end I got a
pro to sort it out. It would be great get some advice if the
    problem occurs again.

  • Print to RGB PDF from Freehand

    Hi everyone,
I have been trying to work this out for a while but am only a geologist using the software for drafting purposes. I have Freehand MX on Windows XP, with Adobe acrobat 9 installed. When I print to PDF from Freehand it usually converts the colours to CMYK which is expected, but I would like them to remain RGB.
    Current Freehand settings:
Output options: All default but I have unticked 'Convert RGB to process'
Raster Effects: Optimal CMYK rendering is ticked but does not appear to make a difference if unticked.
    Colour Management: Kodak digital science
    Acrobat settings:
I have tried editing the high quality print job options in acrobat distiller to 'Convert all colors to sRGB' and Document rendering intent to 'relative colorimetric'. RGB is sRGB61966-2.1.
The only way I have successfully got to an RGB PDF from Freehand is opening the file in Illustrator CS4, and printing to PDF after telling Illustrator that the file is RGB. The conversion is still not perfect, moving text etc... and is a pain in the **** to be honest but if there was a way to go to RGB PDF from Freehand, that would make my day!
    Hope someone can help! Thanks!

I have found only one way to do this. I'm on a Mac, so it may work differently on a PC. I find I must export to an EPS file and Distill.
    1. FHMX Color Management set to None. This can be a problem if you normally work with color management on. Colors will shift.
    2. Make sure all colors in document, including black and white, are RGB process colors. Use no spot colors, CMYK colors or Pantone library colors.
    3. Export to EPS selecting 'convert colors to RGB' option.
    4. Set Distiller color settings to 'Leave color unchanged'.
    5. Open EPS file in Distiller to create PDF.
    6. Open newly created PDF in Acrobat Pro. Colors will match FH RGB colors.

  • FreeHand 8 to pdf fill patterns

When I export a freehand drawing with colored fill patterns to pdf using export or distiller, it looks correct in Acrobat 8 professional and reader, but it doesn't print the fill patterns in color. They come out black & white. I don't wan to use a PS printer since most of the people I sned the pdfs to don't have postscript. This didn't happen with earlier versions of Acrobat. Any ideas to fix this problem?

    Lauren,
This is best asked in the Freehand forum (if you want help with your
export) or the Acrobat forum. This forum is for problems with using
Reader, not in creating pdf files. When you repost, describe your
workflow explicitly together with settings for pdf export or print
settings and Distiller settings. Posting a sample pdf and freehand file
to illustrate the problem would help as well.

  • Exporting to PDF from Freehand error

    Hi,
I have been trying to export a freehand presentation to a PDF file, i have tried to do a simple export aswell as printing to PDF, in both cases the resulting PDF file becomes disconfigured with Text comming out of the background boxes. however if i print to a normal printer all seems to be ok. Does anybody know if I need to do anything special in the configuration so that this does not happen?
    Thanks

here is the print screen of the three results, the original file as seen in freehand, the exported PDF with the original font (District - thin) and an alternative export with a different font. i see that it is a problem with the font but this particular project requires the font from the District family.
I find that it will be easier to unlink the text and insert each block of text in it's own text box, convert to curves and then export the entire document again, though this also does have certain issues as all of the "l" in th document seem to appear in bold. It is a bit of a pain but i guess that there will always be certain incompatabilities between programmes.
    Thanks for your help:)

  • Editing a .pdf to allow freehand drawing

I have .pdf I use at work and is completed on a tablet.  The problem is that there are a couple sections which require freehand drawing to idicate a specific movement.  Is there anyway to allow a portion(s) to be available for freehand drawing?

How do I create the script?
You can use Acrobat to create Acrobat Javascript.
How do I link or attach the script to my PDF document?
    You can use Acrobat.
What software do I need to create the script?
    Acrobat <g>
Is there a low cost alternative to Adobe software?
    In context of Acrobat Javascript?
For effective development and usage of Acrobat Javascript you want to start with Acrobat Pro.

  • Freehand and converting to pdf problem

for some reason when i try to convert a freehand document to pdf ready for printing im losing an "inline" effect around some of the text.
i've put an example to illustrate
    http://simonboard.com/photos/pdf.html
can anyone on these forums help?

Distiller is part of Acrobat Pro and used to set up files for output to an imagesetter.
How are you printing these? Is the printer going to make films for burning plates or is this direct from computer to printer?
If it's direct, as I suspect, then merely save the file as an EPS, then import it into Illustrator to check it over and make sure everything is good. Or just import it into Preview to look at it. They should be able to print from a Freehand EPS, but best to check with them first.
Instead of using Freehand's export to PDF simply print then instead of clicking on the Print button on the right, look to the left for a button that says "Save as PDF". This would probably be better than the EPS file, but either one can be imported into Illustrator.
