Freeing up space on the iPod nano--solution

In case anybody's interested: the easiest way to free up space on the iPod nano is to do the following: plug in the nano to the computer and bring up iTunes. Once you see the icon for the nano, click on it, not on the playlists under it. This will bring up a list of the songs on the nano along with a memory bar underneath. Delete whatever songs you'd like and you should see a corresponding adjustment on the memory bar. Then go on about your day.

Or, you could follow the proper instructions here.

I wish to know whether it is possible to increase the storage space in the above model of IPOD Nano MA002LL/A
coz there are two models 30 Gigs and 60 Gigs i wish to know whether it is possible to convert the 30 Gig model into a higher capacity model after purchase.

It appears that you're considering purchasing a 30gb
5th generation iPod. In your original post, you
called it an iPod nano - the nano is a different
iPod. Also, you have posted this topic in the "iPod
with color display' forum, which is actually designed
for the fourth generation color iPods. That's why I
    was confused.
The iPod does not have a USB port. You can use an
external USB drive to back up your music throught
your computer, using iTunes though. Is this what
    you're asking?
Sorry about the confusion. I am new to this tech. Well if this model of IPod does not have an USB port how does it communicate with the computer. does it have any kinda IR or bluetooth

  • Is there a way to make the iPod Nano 7 run smoother?

I love the iPod Nano. It's great. I've had mine for something like two years now, and I love it. But lately it's been acting up. It connects to my docking station, but if you touch the iPod in anyway, it will immediately disconnect and stop playing music, even though it's still plugged in. Also, sometimes with earbuds, the music will fizzle, crack, or even stop completely. When used with other devices, the earbuds work fine. So, if you have any ideas on how to fix these problems, please let me know!

    Hey Harold the Lion Tamer,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iPod nano (7th generation). The following resource outlines basic troubleshooting steps, and tips on the next best steps if your issue is not resolved:

  • Using Speakers with the ipod nano...help?!

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me. I have the ipod nano and am planning a party. The room is very long and narrow. I was wondering if I can connect speakers to the nano to reach both ends of the room (about 200 feet long). We really want it as background music. Which speakers should I get?
I also have a pretty good docking station, can I connect speakers to it? Do they make cords long enough to reach both ends of the room?
    Thanks so much!!!
    ipod   Windows XP

You can certainly attach speakers to your nano, but there are a few things to think about:
    1. If you try to run the nano off its battery during the party, you may find that you lose music when the battery runs out. Think about connecting the nano to a charger while the party is going on.
    2. Parties typically get pretty loud. The nano is designed to drive headphones, not speakers, so you are not going to get enough volume just by connecting speakers to the headphone jack. You need to either use powered speakers (less good solution) or feed the nano into an amplifier and connect the speakers to the amp (better solution).
Enjoy you party! With the "party shuffle" feature, you can enjoy a great mix.

  • The iPod Nano's video limitation is harshing my groove

It's a well established fact that iPod nano doesn't play videos. Fine. However, there are songs on iTunes that come in video format only. Examples the non-live version of "Dakota" by Stereophonics, "You Were The Last High" by the Dandy Warhols. I bought the video versions for both of these because I really like the songs. And I wound up paying 2x the price for these, though I could care less about the video.
Apple needs a solution for playing the audio content of video files on non video iPods. I don't care if it means extracting the audio only for now. I want to be able to play the music I payed for on my iPod.

It probably would not be in Apple's best interest
(from a business/legal standpoint) to make it a
straight forward process (such as a click in iTunes)
    to exctract only the adio.
I guess I hadn't thought through the legal rammifications but what I'm asking for seems straight forward (at least to me). Apple is in full control of the iTunes/iPod interface. When you attempt to drag a video to the iPod nano, they could prompt you with a dialog that asks if you want the audio only, and then just download that. They wouldn't have to make the audio content available as a separate file that could be copied illegally.
The other point I hope to make is that I truly beleive this feature would make the iPod nano a better and more versatile product. I thought part of reason for this forum was to suggest improvements, but if this is just a support forum, I may be a little out of line. Oh well

    Hello, Pete.
Here is an article I would recommend going through when an iPod is not recognized by iTunes or the computer.
iPod not recognized in My Computer and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369
Usually the resolution is updating the Apple Mobile Device Driver.  See the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.

  • What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod?

What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod? I did this some time ago. On screen was shown available space somewhat less than 120 GB, but maybe somewhere between 10 and 20 GB more in the library. I had to get the iPod updated anyway, so I did proceed. However, afterwards the total content of the library was only about 110 GB. Now I wonder what did actually happen. Was the first sign only corrected for double copies of the same files or lost files or where files deleted from iTunes? And if files where deleted from iTunes, were they also deleted from my computer?

Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

  • There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.   Time: 30/05/2014 1:16:20 AM

Recently, our mail server crashed at about 7pm one night, with the error 'There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.'
When we click Retry, the server starts up OK.
There are no snapshots listed in Snapshot manager for any of the virtual machines on the host.
There is also free disk space available on the host and for the VM with the disk errors.
This happened at least three more times, often at bad times. Each time, we were able to click 'Retry' and the disk/system would allow the VM to start-up successfully.
I checked the Forums, the VMware support articles and the internet as I had not seen this problem before. I have completed the VSphere 5.1 - Fast Track course and this issue was NOT covered in the training.
Most of the advice on-line and even that on the VMware web-site was pointing to snapshots being the cause of this issue. There are no snapshots enabled and I cannot see evidence of snapshots ever being used.
    - We are running VMware vsphere (5.1.0) and there are (were) 4 virtual machines running on the ESX host. We are using the free version of VMware/ESXi.
    - The Hard disk types we are using for this Virtual Machine are 'Thin Provisioned'.
    - There are 4 [Thin Provisioned] Hard Disks for this virtual machine.
    - There are 6 CPUs
    - There is 20GB of RAM (memory)
    - The VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the guest/VM operating system. It is an Exchange 2010 SP1 mail server. There is plenty of available disk space on all the drives. The [Exchange] log files are cleaned out regularly (automated).
I decided to move one of our non-critical servers off this host and on to another host to see if this helped the problem. This took quite some time, as we are not using HA or vmotion, nor do we have VCenter Server...nonetheless, I finally managed to get the non-critical server on to another host (n.b. This was a much smaller machine with less virtual resources assigned to it).
After moving the non-critical server off this host, we decided to monitor the Host and see if the issue resolved itself.
I checked the host about 6-10 times a day, from first thing in the morning till last thing at night - monitoring the performance of not only the Virtual Machine, but the ESXi host also.
There were no adverse performance issues. The only thing I did note, was in the Summary page on the ESX Host, under Storage, was If I right-clicked on the datastore and clicked refresh, then the free disk space would drop (ie from 140GB to 125GB).
After monitoring the host and VM for about 2 weeks, we did NOT have another instance of the above error.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I wanted to give as much detail given this error has been raised before and snapshots are usually blamed as the cause.
    My question is this:
If the ESX host had plenty of available disk capacity and there were no snapshots enabled on the VM (or any other VM's on the same host), then why did our Virtual machine crash with the error that 'there is not more space for virtual disk Servername_2.vmdk'?
How do we prevent this issue from happening if we don't know the underlying cause?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.
If I have not provided enough info on the specs or environment, please let me know and I will provide more information.
    Thanks all,
    Kurt

The type of storage is really based on your requirements, and your ability to withstand downtime.
iSCSI as you are using with a NAS such as Synology or QNAP.  NAS Selector - Support - Synology - Network Attached Storage (NAS)
I wouldn't use iSCSI for Exchange or any database.  It's a bit slow.
Do you have a single physical host?  Then I'd probably to an external direct attached storage.  This would be a card inserted in your host server that gives you multilane SAS/SATA connectivity (www.techcable.com/SAS-SATA/SAS-SATA.pps) and an external disk enclosure/array.
For multiple hosts to a single array, I recommend a fibre channel connection to a FC capable switch, and on to a FC connected array.
We used to use a HP P2000 (on old G1), but it's since been retired.  Worked pretty well once firmware was upgraded.  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=4118559#!tab=features.  They can be connected via iSCSI, Fibre Channel or 6GB SAS so they are flexible and reasonably priced.
    Recommendations:
Use RAID 6 with your large disk arrays.  With large disks there is a measurable failure rate when rebuilding a failed RAID5 array based on MTBF.
Use smaller 15K disks in RAID 0+1 for speed on databases/Exchange.
Use slower 7.2K disks in RAID6 for file storage.
We are a small hospital and we have 3 VMware servers with dual CNA (FC and Ethernet in a single twinax cable) connections to 2 redundant Cisco Nexus 5K switches and then 4 Fibre Channel connections to an EMC VNX 5300.  It's extremely fast with about 50 virtual servers, but was quite an investment.  One thing we don't have to worry about is down time.  If there ever is an equipment failure, we have redundant everything, including power split between two UPSs.
Our VNX has 3 tiers of performance.  3 100GB SSD "Fast Cache" in RAID 1 with hot spare, to keep the most used data ready, but it's not really a tier, however one could be built utilizing the same disks.  A second tier is performance tier with a 8 600GB RAID 0+1 and hot spare.  The third is a bunch of 7.2K 3TB disks in RAID6.  The VNX autotiers, placing data on disks depending on where it's needed.  The volumes are sliced and diced automatically in the background to make this happen and we never have to touch it.  I used a demo of Solarwinds Storage Manager to monitor performance for a while and the utilization was always low, meaning all data access was fast, througout the day.

  • Why does my artwork disappear from my ipod?   It's all visible in itunes, but on the ipod nano it disappears.

Why does my artwork keep disappearing from my ipod?   It's all visible in itunes, but on the ipod nano it when I copy over new albums with artwork, the artwork on the albums already on the ipod lose theirs, although they retain the artwork if viewed through itunes.
In case it matters, I don't "sync" my "library".  I have a I have a PC and copy over directories containing albums of MP3 files by dragging them onto the ipod with itunes.  I also tried pulling over only the files and not the directories.

OK, so I decided that maybe if I "sync" my iPod instead of just copying stuff to it at will, that maybe it would fix the problem.  I did a "restore", wiping out the contents.  I set up a "playlist", and put everything that I wanted on the iPod into the "playlist".   Then I "synced" the "playlist" onto the iPod.  Every song and album now had the proper album art.  I could live with this.   Then I added another album to the "playlist", and "synced".  The new album was now on the iPod with the correct artwork.  The albums that were already on the iPod now either had their appropriate artwork, no artwork, or the artwork from the other albums that were already on the iPod, with no rhyme or reason as to which was which.  AARGH.   I wiped it out and re-added the now-explanded "playlist" and "synced" again, and every album had the right cover.   I guess the only thing to do is completely replace the contents of the iPod any time I want to add or change anything, or forget about artwork.

  • Does the iPod nano have Bluetooth?

    Hello,
I am looking at buying the latest iPod nano, I don't like the standard cable headphones, they get in the way, fall out, get tangled and get pulled out of your ears.
Does the latest model come with Bluetooth connectivity?
    thank you.

    Onechief:
i10s Bluetooth adapter ($45) - Since the iPod nano 6G doesn’t have Bluetooth, a dongle is your only option. While dozens of choices exist, the i10s BT adapter is the smallest of the lot. When you’re rocking the world’s smallest iPod, you don’t want a big horsey adapter jutting out of the side. At about two-thirds the size of Sony’s BT adapter, the i10s is the perfect fit. The i10s is zero-config and auto-pairs when it’s powered up.
    Cheers.

  • Does the iPod nano keep changing songs if I keep it in my pocket?

I'm not going to be running or gymming with the iPod nano in my pocket. It is mostly for home use. I just wanted to know that since there is no HOLD/LOCK button, it may keep changing songs if put in a tight pocket while walking or travelling. Is that the case?
Also, should I buy it for home use? (With the occasional outdoor trip? Or do you think I just stick to my laptop)

If you have Shake to Shuffle turned off and you push the sleep button it shouldn't change songs in your pocket. Mine doesn't.

  • Does the ipod nano can record sounds?

Does the iPod nano can record sounds connecting "headphones with microphone"?

    Hi uptight,
Yes, the iPod Nano does support MP4 files.
You can find more information about the files the iPod supports here: http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
You can convert many videos right from iTunes. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1211 will walk you through the process with sample files.
