Freeze in IE 5.1.7 Browser

Hello. I would welcome suggestions and appreciate your help. Whatever I have tried has not worked and I do not know what else to do except to purchase a Norton disc and run a check on my systems. Recently I have experienced intermittant freezing when starting up my IE 5.1.7 Browser. Presently, I can't use it. Things you might want to know about: I use an alias from my desktop. I have virtual memory on and an extra 256 Ram chip with no other devices connected except an ACOM data backup disk so I don't think memory is an issue I have tried the following: 1) allocated more memory anyway: I now have the settings as minimum-8892 and preferred 18,192; 2) rebuilt the desktop; 3) used disk repair, both verify and repair mode, to check on my disc-it always reads as o.k. with everything in the black; 4) trashed and thus replaced internet preferences; 5) trashed and thus replaced IE download cache preferences ( The latter was the only preference file in my Explorer preferences file that when the problem first occurred had a today date. That was yesterday. Today on the other hand, I had a duplicate download cache preferences file. I trashed that keeping the original and now there is just the one.); 6) trashed my IE desktop alias and made a new alias from my IE browser application file. Yesterday, I was able to resolve the issue using the above procedures, although I don't know what worked. Today has been a failure. Let me add, that I have no freeze problems of this sort with the other browser I routinely use, which is Netscape 7.0.2. My Netscape browser seems to be working fine. Also, to be sure that I am understood correctly when I say freeze, I mean the following: My preferred web page appears, but I can't click on the toolbar: thus I can't access Finder and shut down properly or use favorites or anything else in the toolbar. Thanks for reading this. I look forward to learning what to do and what my options are.

Baby Boomer (USofA); thanks for your detailed reply.I am sorry for not replying sooner. I actually never got an email notice that you posted and found your post only today when I checked the post topic.
I have made a copy of your suggestions and will follow up and go through my Systems folder later in the week to find the relevant files and folders.
As is, my preferred memory settings are 300% and I regularly, usually daily, delete history and empty cache for the browsers I am using.
The specific list of files you cite were ones I was unfamiliar with. Could you give me a short answer on what they are and their function?
Regarding your memory question: my built in memory is 320 MB and my virtual memory is 321 MB.
I would also appreciate your feedback on a longterm, related issue for me:
Using my Netscape 7.0.2 Browser, I will inevitably during normal daily use encounter a separate 'freeze' issue. I am not sure of the correct way to label it: let me describe. I will be on a web page, say this one, and won't be able to actually use my keyboard: letters won't print, and I only resolve the issue by closing the window, and reopening the web page. This of course is tedious over time and slows my ability to use email or even search the web, since I am also unable to print in a search request on Google and have to close Google and reopen the web page.
I have systematically gone through all application programs I thought were possibly relevant, including Netscape, and the keyboard and mouse applications in my controls panels and sharply upped the preferred and even minimum memory settings. Unfortunately, this has not resolved the issue.
I then went through all Netscape preferences I could locate and finding the file, Netscape Registry with a Jan. 1, 1904 date and similarly the folder with my user name with a Jan. 1, 1904 date with all the cache logs, trashed them and replaced them with copies from my back up disk systems folder. Unfortunately, this had no effect.
In essence, any repeated use of Netscape, sometimes even as little as the opening of a second web page, can trigger the problem, and I have to close the 'frozen' window and re-open the web page.
I would appreciate your advice. Thank you.
best wishes, minnow

  • Mac Keeps Freezing When Internet Browsing

    Hey guys,
I don't know if this'll help but all the threads I usually go on, the person with the problem usually gives their computer details, so:
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
    - iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012)
    - 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
    - 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    - NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB
Well, anyways, now to the problem;-
Lately, whenever I'm browsing the Internet on Google Chrome of Safari, 100% of the time after about 10 minutes it will always freeze for about 30 seconds, then go back to whatever it was doing. It will do this a few times until it freezes for good (spinning rainbow wheel), and I actually have to turn off the computer.
In the past, I have accidentally installed an adware called Genieo, which I got removed when I went to the mac store. I'm not sure if that's come back to haunt me, or I have done something else stupid while browsing. I haven't installed any software applications recently, which has got me confused as to why my mac keeps freezing.
Also, if I'm browsing on Google Chrome and it doesn't freeze, shockwave will always crash whenever I try to view something, then it will freeze.
After this, when I try to turn my computer back on, the kernel on the white screen will always come up, which I then have to manually turn the computer off again. It usually turns on normally after a few times of trying.
I've gone onto Recovery Mode and verified my disk many times, to which it says there are no problems.
I've looked up Antivirus' for mac, and have come across a few (Avast, CamXav, etc), but I have also browsed many forums with the majority of people saying your mac doesn't need an antivirus and it will slow your computer instead of benefiting you, so I'm not sure what to do.
Just wondering if anyone else has come across problems similar, or know how to fix this. Should I install an antivirus? Should I go to the mac store (last resort)? Will reinstalling OS X or restarting then booting up from Time Machine with my external drive help?
    Thanks.
    -Chris

The suggestions in the 2 links I previously posted did not work?
If you have Apple Care, call them & let them deal w/it.
    OOW, try the following:
1 - set up a test account.  You need to determine if the problem crops up in the test account.  This will determine if the problem is system wide or not.
2 - Run Apple Hardware Test.  Make sure when troubleshooting you have disconnected all devices from your comp except for the keyboard.
3 - Run OS Recovery again.  Only this time select "Repair Disk."
4 - Reinstall the update.   Only this time use the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update
5 - Take your comp to your local AS or an AASP.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!

  • Macbook Pro takes long to boot up, Freezes easily, Gets Gray Screen saying restart

I've had my Macbook Pro 13 since November 2010, I am still running Snow Leopard, never upgraded or anything. Since last March, my computer takes a long time to turn on, get to the screen where I log in. If I click anything when it gets to the screen right away, I can't click anything, the mouse moves, but nothing responds. I have to wait a good 15-20 minutes before I can click anything. I usually turn my computer on, and leave, come back 25-30 minutes later, and log in. When I have over 3 applications open, ex Firefox, MS Word, Spotify, my computer lags, and sometimes freezes. The freezes last from 30 seconds, to me having to restart the computer. Sometimes the computer freezes randomly when I'm just browsing. Around 70-80% of the time, when I play a video, using flash player like youtube, my computer lags, and after watching a video or 2, the computer freezes. Most of the time, the freeze stays frozen, and around 10 minutes later my mouse can move, but the screen is frozen, and the rainbow loading symbol starts. I just restart the computer. Sometimes, around once every 2 days, or sometimes it happens around 10 times in a couple of hours of me using the computer, my computer gets a gray screen that descends down the screen, it says in multiple languages that I have to immediately restart my computer by pressing the power button down and then pressing it again. Oh, and the bottom of my computer always gets really really hot when I use it.
It is a huge hassle, I can still use the computer, but I would love it if my computer was fixed.

I am still running Snow Leopard, never upgraded or anything.
What about updates?  Check software update.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer.  Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again.  If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up.  At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
    Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Snow Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy of Snow Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
Oh, and the bottom of my computer always gets really really hot when I use it.
User Tip:  How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I can't seem t find your model in the Toshiba US support site.
However, usually, you tap the F8 key while powering up and it brings you into the Start Up recovery menu.

  • Reader 10.1 Freezing Browsers

We're using Reader 10.1 in protected mode on XP SP3 machines.  Browsers used are FF4/5, and IE 8.
When a user navigates to a site with a pdf and opens it, Reader opens in protected mode by default which is what we want.  When you click on "save a copy" at the bottom, the save as box pops up and will randomly freeze the browser.  When it does freeze, it will not let you browse to a different directory to save or even cancel the attempted saving operation.  Clicking cancel will typically kill this box after about 60 seconds.  All browsers listed appear to be affected by this.  Task manager doesn't show a spike in CPU/memory use and nothing abnormal in event viewer logs.
On one test machine FF will freeze while IE will work fine.  Try again later and FF is fine and IE freezes.  Sometimes it happens.  Sometimes it doesn't.  AcroRd32.exe has been verified as not running in between tests.  Reader functions normal when opening a pdf locally.
Bringing Reader out of protected mode (click on Adobe logo in lower right corner) and then selecting "save a copy" works and no problems reported.
    It sounds similar to:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/860/cpsid_86063.html
Specific JavaScript API usage doesn't work
The JS SaveAs  function fails: doc.saveAs() fails due to security restrictions.  Protected Mode prevents scripts running inside Reader from writing to  locations except for %temp% and the AppData area for Reader X.
    Any suggestions on a fix?

  • IPod Corrupt; iTunes freezing

    Hey guys,
I've found myself in quite a pickle! My favorite Apple device and one of my closest companions in life, my iPod Classic, has been corrupted. I can't say I'm entirely sure what did it; but what I do know is that it is, indeed, corrupted.
Now, this normally wouldn't be too big an issue, but this particular situation has me quite puzzled! When iTunes is installed, plugging my iPod into my computer causes both the program and the device to freeze. I can't even browse the iPod's files through Windows Explorer.
The only way out of the freeze is to reboot my computer or physically unplug the iPod. Doing the latter results in iTunes unfreezing and letting me know the iPod is corrupted. From there, I normally would be able to do a restore, but of course I've now removed the iPod!
I uninstalled iTunes so that I'd be able to access the files, and copied all of my music off of my iPod to my computer (unfortunately, I no longer have the music on my computer! It's all on my iPod!), so I'm okay with restoring the thing to factory settings. But that seems to be a difficult thing to accomplish, given the whole freezing ordeal.
My Plan B was to copy the file that I suspect is corrupt -- iTunesDB -- to my computer. I was then going to delete the one on the iPod and hope iTunes was programmed to generate a new default file in the absence of one. If it didn't work, I'd be able to just copy the one on my computer back to the iPod, and things would be back to normal.
However, this, too, seems impossible! I'm unable to copy it, for it freezes halfway through the transfer.
Do any of you guys have suggestions on how I may get this iPod working again? In worst-case scenario, I could take it to the local Apple store, but I'd need to wait a week or two for my friend's car to get fixed. It'd be preferable to be able to recover it here!
    Thanks a million,
    James

I thought I'd post a solution to this that I thought of after a few days of thinking, just in case this happens to someone else.
The solution involves taking advantage of even more bad programming in iTunes to get it to restore the iPod. This solution will work for you if:
-Your iPod freezes iTunes when you plug it in
-iTunes will unfreeze if you unplug your iPod and let you know that your iPod is messed up.
    Here's the solution:
    1) Plug your iPod in. iTunes will freeze.
    2) Unplug your iPod. iTunes will unfreeze and tell you your iPod is broken. Click "Okay" on this popup, then QUICKLY press "Restore iPod."
iTunes will fail to remove your iPod as being listed, and start the restore process. The first step is downloading the original factory settings from the internet, so wait for this to download. The next step is placing these files on your iPod.
    3) As you'd expect you'll get another error when it's time for iTunes to put the files on your iPod. It can't find the thing since you unplugged it!
    The next step is time-critical:
    4) Plug the iPod in, then click "Okay" on the popup. Continue pressing "Restore iPod" and hitting Okay if your iPod can't be found as quickly as possible. There's a small duration of time where your iTunes detects your iPod but doesn't freeze yet. If you get the timing right, you can have iTunes start restoring your iPod before it gets hung up on a corrupt settings file.
    5) Replace your music, and enjoy!

  • Late 08 MacBook Pro Hard Freezing in Vista - Only Happens when in Firefox??

    Hi All,
I know there are many topics for macbook crashes etc but I think that "blue screens" or "freezing during intensive graphics" are among the many different issues out there, caused by different things. Personally I can play games perfectly fine, everything works perfect, all apart from one thing: Firefox.
I want to focus this topic on ONLY users who are finding their Late 08 MacBook Pro hard freezes but ONLY when using Firefox.
By "hard freeze" I mean the whole of vista locks up; no response keyboard/mouse, nothing, even closing the lid does not put it in standby. You physically have to press and hold the power button to restart it.
Out of the dozens and dozens of freezes I experienced on my macbook, absolutely 100% of the freezes occured while I was loading/browsing a page in Firefox. At one point it was happening within minutes of a fresh boot, but I'm right now posting using Internet Explorer, have been browsing for hours, using multiple tabs, and I have not experienced a single freeze.
Please everyone bear in mind, this is NOT a topic about your macbook crashing during 3D gaming, this is JUST about it crashing whilst firefox is active.
Who else here has noticed their computer freezing during web browsing in firefox? Think carefully, are you one of us?
What I don't understand is why only firefox? And how can such a simple single piece of software cause a hardware freeze? It seems very bizarre but it is definitely the cause for me, 100%.
I just want to establish that I am not alone here

    @ The hatter:
Just updated my info below btw
Vista is indeed current and up to date, with SP1 with Apple BC 2.1
I've done the sfc /scannow and it didn't find any problems.
I'm running the latest version of Firefox now (3.0.5), but I have been keeping it up to date, and used to run older versions. This doesn't seem to change anything. I run many extensions in Firefox, but as Mr Fusion says he's experienced crashes in both Google Chrome and Safari (I haven't tried them), I doubt that's the issue. However I'll install those browsers and test to see if I get the same results.
Ive run Vista 64-bit for two years and use FF daily, alolng with Opera some, IE7 (and now IE8 beta 2).
Does this mean you are not using a Late 08 MacBook Pro and are using the older model?
Turn off disk cache in Firefox? I usually do, because otherwise Safari and FF do a lot of disk I/O.
Yeah I have Offline Storage set to 0MB, assuming that is the setting you are referring to?
So shouldn't everyone who has a late 08 Macbook pro with Bootcamp be experiencing this problem? How come some of us have and some of us don't?
I think the problem is that this problem is quite intermittant and random. Sometimes I can use firefox for hours and hours without a crash, and other times it'll happen relatively quickly.

  • P6-2340eo freezing

    Hello,
I bought a brand new p6-2340eo from our local dealer.http://www.klick.ee/lauaarvutid/hp-pavilion-p6-2485eo.html At first everything was fine until 2-3 month after the purchase, I've started noticing lags/freezings. When roaming around the internet or studying, it is really hard to notice it. Its noticable only when playing music/videos, because of the constant stream of the sound/picture. It does it every 15-20 minutes or so, It's quite hard to describe it, but it freeze in short intervals, freezes for a second, goes normal for a second, then the same all over again a couple of times. I know its freezing because the audio gets stuck in one place.
I HOPE you get anything out of this,
    thanks in advance.

If you are seeing the freezes while online and using a browser to stream video you should try updating the flash browser plugin.

  • Satellite Pro A200 freezes, including on/off button

Had a complete system freeze last night - first the firefox browser tabs, then, when I tried to call up task manager, STRG+ALT+DEL didn't work either. I pressed the off-button repeatedly, but couldn't turn the laptop off.
After disconnecting the power cable the power led remained blue, and it still ran on battery, although the battery led was off. I left the laptop on (what else could I do) until the battery was emptied and it shut itself down.
This morning, it came up normally, followed by this error message:
"the exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred at location 0x7c812a5b".
Followed by a windows update screen that updates were completed and the computer would restart soon (just in case that can be connected - the night before, the "updates available" symbol was in the shortcut-bar too, and when it froze, I was running my daily Spyware Doctor virus check in the background).
I restarted the computer without further error messages, and it has been fine so far, but I've no idea what caused this, and if it will happen again. Any advice?

    > I left the laptop on (what else could I do) until the battery was emptied and it shut itself down.
    What else could you do?
First of all you could hold the power button pressed for about 4 sec and this would help tp shut down the notebook. Then you could restart the notebook to check if the system would run properly. However, it seems its running again.
    > I restarted the computer without further error messages, and it has been fine so far, but I've no idea what caused this, and if it will happen again. Any advice?
Believe me, its really not easy to say what caused this system issue and I assume nobody here will be able to provide EXCATLY answer.
In my opinion there was a software issue which was solved by new reboot and new Vista update
Such strange things happen always and are not uncommon to me.

  • Column freez using browser based scroll bar

    hi all,
i got some solution to freeze columns using scrollbar its really nice,
but i want to freeze columns , i have to use browser based scroll bar instead of report scroll bar, when i scroll mouse then report headers will locked at starting position of page and then only data will vertically scroll without scroll bar in report.
    can anybody help me.

no, no, that's just a regular finder window. I don't have any finder extensions. That's just a regular finder window that happens to have a folder with the CDFinder application in it.
    Here's another example:
BEFORE clicking the last .ffx file in the list:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/aP7B8IO6c76v1Y_5w8TxXw?feat=directlink
    AFTER the first click:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ahQ4EvvkMzcVhXMppvedOw?feat=directlink
The second click of a double-click gets lost on the horizontal scroll bar.
Are you saying you never get a horizontal scroll bar, or just that whenever a horizontal scroll bar appears it doesn't ever cover a file?

  • IPhone 3GS screen freezes regularly - only sleep button revives it

I have had the 3GS now for 2weeks. Had the Ipod Touch before which was great and motivated me to purchase the IPhone, so I had the online ability all the time.
    Been a great disappointed unfortunately.
Installed all my apps from the beginning, and noticed the frequent freezing of the screen when just browsing apps, but also within apps the screen would stop responding. The home key always works though.
The only way to revive the screen is to hit the sleep button, and then unlock it again with the home button + slider.
Since then I have tried all the tricks in the book (I think):
    1. Rebooted -no effect
    2. Hard Reset (home + sleep 10 secs) - better performance, but still freezing screen
    3. Restored it with content through Itunes - no effect
    4. Restored it as new iphone without content - no effect
    5. Restored it as new iphone with the OS 3.1.2 - no effect
Also disabled push notifications (google exchange for mail, calendar, contacts). (Just now I noticed I missed an additional push setting for the calendar and contacts in a deeper menu item - a final hope maybe?)
Anyhow, is there anything else I can do before I send it away to the service point in Sweden? (No Genius bars here...)
Could reinstallation of Itunes really have any effect? I am already using the latest version.
Any tips are welcome (Phone not jailbroken or any funny business like that)

Reinstalling iTunes won't help unless you have trouble syncing or iTunes recognizing the iPhone. The problem seems to be in your phone, but it could be a specific app that's causing it.
I suggest restoring the phone as new, an then adding each app one by one, testing the phone after each addition. If you find a specific app causing this, delete it and re-download it from the app store. Check to see if it's compatible with the current iPhone OS - some older apps haven't beed updated and cause problems.
Beyond that, there's no choice left except warranty service for a possible hardware defect.
