Freeze on blank gray screen at startup in OS 9.2.2!?

Hi,
I've been a happy OS 9.2.2 user for many years on my G4/933. I have OSX.3 on a 2nd internal drive. But I do mainly audio recording, and I find OSX to be extremely sluggish, so I work primarily in OS9.
Everything had been working fine, but then last night as I restarted from OSX with my OS 9.2.2 partition selected as the startup disk, the computer rebooted then completely froze on a blank gray screen. No icon, question mark, sad Mac. Nothing. Since then I have restarted many time by holding down the Option key to go back to OSX. While in OSX I ran Disk Repair on the internal drive with OS 9 on it. And I then ran Disk Warrior 2.1 for OS9 on the drive. They both found some errors, but nothing critical and they were fixed. But I still get the gray screen of nothingness when restarting under OS 9.2.2.
With some hesitation I tried "zapping the PRAM", which i've never done before. As I held down the Command/Option/P/R keys the screen just stayed black, which was scary. When I finally let the keys go it changed the Gray Screen of Nothingness and I was able to reboot and get back to OSX. I have no idea if I actually zapped my PRAM or not, or if that is the right thing to do.
I can function in OSX, but I'm really hobbled without being able to work in my good old OS 9 environment. I would really appreciate any tips...!

Okay. I discovered these two post from a guy who appeared to have a similar issue as you do:

He even used Mac OS 9 primarily for audio work. From what I gathered his Mac was suffering from corrupt preference files.
Try doing the following:
Boot into Mac OS X and open the Preference folder in you Mac OS 9 System Folder.
Move these files into the Trash: Finder preferences, Mac OS preferences & System preferences. Also trash the preferences files for your audio card if you have any.
Open your Mac OS X System Preferences and select your Mac OS 9 folder as your start up volume, then quit System Preferences.
Shut down your Mac and unplug it.
Open the Mac, remove all of your PCI cards, and press the PMU button for 10 seconds. (The PMU button is a tiny black button on a small silver block mounted somewhere on the motherboard. It should look similar to this.)
Reinstall you cards, close your Mac and plug it back in.
Press the power button. If all is well the Mac should be able to into Mac OS 9 with out any problems.
If it still hags on the gray screen then your Mac OS 9 partition might be heavily fragmented or nearly full.

I just a get a blank gray screen with a floppy icon and a question mark. When I reboot holding down the option key I do get a a different screen with a circular arrow on the left and a straight arrow on the right. When I click on the semi-circle I see the hour glass but nothing happens. When I click on the straight arrow I get the gray screen again. I'm stuck!

Mac G5 Freezes on gray screen on startup.

I've been noticing a problem of a freezing computer on the gray screen on startup in the last month. I simply re-start my computer, and it goes back to normal and boots up fine. I've not installed and programs, utilities, or new hardware. My computer still has over 200 gig of free space.
Is this an indication of a worse problem? If not, is there something I can do to fix this? I regularly used the Disk Utility program to check and fix permissions, so that should keep it somewhat clean.

Update your os. Your profile confirms you still using OS 10.6.6! You should be using OS 10.6.8 the last version of SL.

Mountain Lion install results in blank gray screen.

I recently downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my wife's late-2007 iMac. Unfortunately, each time, after the installer finishes and reboots, the computer sticks at a blank gray screen where normally the Apple logo would appear while things boot in the background. I have tried restoring from Time Capsule and re-downloading then reinstalling, but it produces the same result.
With the gray screen problem present, I've tried a Safe Boot, holding down Option to select a disk to boot from (nothing comes up when I do this, just the mouse cursor), and resetting the PRAM/NVRAM. I haven't really been able to find anyone else having this particular issue. The hard drive in the iMac is a little over a year old as we had to replace the old one. And from what my wife read, the late-2007 iMacs are Mountain Lion compatible.

the mac owner had mentioned his mac going very slow, and was told it could take several days for the new OSX to sort things out. Perhaps this explains my issue and perhaps yours.

Safari: Pages begin to load and then go to blank gray screen?

Hi there. I am using Safari 6.1.1 on a late 2009 iMac. I've never had this problem before, and it's worth noting that Safari does not actually crash -- it remains responsive but the pages don't load properly. They begin to load and but it's as if, the instant the full page appears, it cuts to a blank gray screen. It doesn't happen with absolutely every site but it occurs with the majority I'm visiting. Obviously it makes Safari unusable so I'd appreciate any help that could be offered. Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Blank gray screen on my macbook pro after rebooting!

After rebooting my macbook pro, after choosing english as the language, a blank gray screen appears and then again goes back to the choose language menu. what should I do?

If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.

If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.

If your computer is still under warranty or you have Apple Care, take full advantage of it by letting tech support deal with your problems. It's what you're paying them for.
Out of warranty - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

Intel imac has gray screen at startup

My imac (intel) started having problems this afternoon that resulted in a gray screen at start up. Here are the events:
1) I was intrigued by the possibility of upgrading to Lion but decided to do some research first. At some point in the process, I accidentally clicked on either a "Buy Now" or "Download Now" button. I was expecting to be directed to a page for payment, but nothing happened except Safari seemed to get jammed up. I closed that page and thought nothing of it. Decided I wasn't ready to upgrade anyway because I still have some PPC software.
2) I received a software update alert and completed most of the updates.
3) I tried to stream a movie from netflix, but kept getting a page that said plug-in failure.
4) I attempted to restart, got the chimes, and then the blank gray screen but nothing else.
5) Tried to restart while holding down shift key. Was able to startup.
6) Attempted a regular restart again just to see what would happen. Got the chime and gray screen again.
7) Attempted to restart again holding down the option key. Was able to start from harddrive.
8) Attempted a regular restart again and it restarted just fine.
So, my questions are:
1) did I somehow partially download Lion and that is what is causing these problems?
2) have I fixed the problem or is there some underlying issue that will resurface?
3) is it likely that I need to take it in for service or will need to in the very near future and better just do it now?
Oh also, when I went to unplug peripheries, computer was extremely hot. istat says my harddrive is 126 F/ 52 C. Is that normal?

It sounds like a HD failure however I'm hoping I'm wrong there. Please read Gray screen appears during startup and see if these actions help.

10.7.5 gray screen on startup

I am fairly Mac savvy user. I've tried all reccomended steps to fix the issue, but to no avail:/
Safari was running several windows & tabs when the crash occurred. Now I can safe boot, but it hangs on a blank gray screen instead of launching my desktop.
I updated/reinstalled the OS, nada. I bought a new HDD, used carbon copy cloner, still nothing! Please help, deadlines approaching!

My Tungsten E2 has a blank gray screen.

I have a Tungsten E2 that has a blank, gray screen that will not shut off using the power button and I am unable to reset the device by depressing the reset button on the back.

I know that your original posting was over a year ago, but the same thing happened to me today. Even the hard reset would not work, the screen remained blank and the palm would not turn off. I ended up opening the unit and disconnecting the battery. When I reconnected the battery (about a minute later), all functions were back to normal. Maybe this will be helpful to someone else who encounters the same problem.

I see a blank blue screen at startup. Am I going to lose everything that I didn't backup?

So I booted off the install disc (hold C at startup), did an archive and install) and then shut it down. Powered it up and zapped the PRAM at startup (commandoption+PR) and it now boots instantly. Just curious as to what video card you have in yours? I've been reading a lot of threads about problems caused by the ATI Radeon HD 2600, which is what I have in mine. Sounds as if a firmware update is needed, but not yet available. I also had 4 kernel panics in my first 20 starts. Apple Genius Bar said this was due to Symantec Anti-Virus for Mac.

Blank Gray Screen at Start Up - Please Help.

Okay, I know that similar threads with this problem have been posted, but I've done a search and it seems like everyone's problems with the blank screen thing is a little bit different from mine, so I hope it's okay to start a new thread!
At least once a week, sometimes more, my computer starts up at the time I have set for it to do so, and it stops at a blank gray screen. I hold the power button to turn it off, and then press the power button again, and it starts up just fine.
I'm hoping someone can recommend some fixes or reasons as to why this is happening, before it happens again and I'm not able to start it up, which would be disastrous for my work flow!

Hopefully you have a good backup of all your data?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Macbook Pro takes long to boot up, Freezes easily, Gets Gray Screen saying restart

I've had my Macbook Pro 13 since November 2010, I am still running Snow Leopard, never upgraded or anything. Since last March, my computer takes a long time to turn on, get to the screen where I log in. If I click anything when it gets to the screen right away, I can't click anything, the mouse moves, but nothing responds. I have to wait a good 15-20 minutes before I can click anything. I usually turn my computer on, and leave, come back 25-30 minutes later, and log in. When I have over 3 applications open, ex Firefox, MS Word, Spotify, my computer lags, and sometimes freezes. The freezes last from 30 seconds, to me having to restart the computer. Sometimes the computer freezes randomly when I'm just browsing. Around 70-80% of the time, when I play a video, using flash player like youtube, my computer lags, and after watching a video or 2, the computer freezes. Most of the time, the freeze stays frozen, and around 10 minutes later my mouse can move, but the screen is frozen, and the rainbow loading symbol starts. I just restart the computer. Sometimes, around once every 2 days, or sometimes it happens around 10 times in a couple of hours of me using the computer, my computer gets a gray screen that descends down the screen, it says in multiple languages that I have to immediately restart my computer by pressing the power button down and then pressing it again. Oh, and the bottom of my computer always gets really really hot when I use it.
It is a huge hassle, I can still use the computer, but I would love it if my computer was fixed.

What about updates? Check software update.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?

Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.

i recently tried to boot from my installation disc to troubleshoot, etc. however, I was unable to get the computer to boot it completely. it went through the normal gray boot screen, followed by a blue screen for a couple seconds. after this, it went to a darker gray screen with a pointer, but it sits there and does nothing else, even after letting it sit overnight. I couldnt find this problem anywehre on the forum, and I would appreciate any information about this problem. thanks

ive tried by holding c, changing the startup disc, and clicking restart on the install mac os x application on the DVD. the problem is not that it wont boot, just that it freezes without any possible input from me.
