Freeze on start - damaged preferences file

For the past several weeks I repeatedly can't start Lightroom 5.6 and now 5.7 without first deleting the preferences file, which apparently is repeatedly damaged. Once this is done I can restart Lightroom and reset my preferences. This occurs on two computers, one running Windows 8.1, the other Windows 7 - with two different Lightroom catalogs. I have found no information about this strange and sudden problem. Is anybody else experiencing this?
Adobe has blocked any support contact on systems not running on the monthly paying CC subscription model (I use CS6, which I have licensed through an art college where I have a teaching position), leaving professional users such as myself to solve mysterious problems alone. This is time consuming, which I find this unacceptable. What other industry ignores the needs of its users, especially those who help maintain its image through professional use and teaching? Has Adobe stopped listening?

Hi, spenzmatik
1. I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
Good luck!

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Can't start Photoshop without deleting preferences file

    Hi gang,
I have a Macbook Pro running Lion, OS X 10.7 that I purchased two months ago so it's relatively new. Just bought Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended and installed it on the computer a day ago. Software will not operate unless I hold option+command+shift when starting so that the preferences file is deleted. I'm hoping someone knows how to help me reset things.
I suspect that the problem stems from a plugin that I deposited into the plugins folder, because the software was working at first. I didn't piece this together until after the fact, but once I fired up the software a couple times after installing it, it worked fine each time. I noodled around and checked some things out to see what's new in CS5, then I went ahead and deposited a favorite plugin into the plugins folder. Things stopped working after this. Not positive the plugin is related, but thought I should mention it.
I removed the plugin of course, to no avail. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software three times. No difference. When I open the software without deleting the prefs file, it's just buggy and non-responsive. Can't start a new project, and thing just end up crashing every time. The software is useless without deleting the prefs file when firing it up.
Is there any hope of restoring things to normal? Thanks very much!

As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • CS5 - Photoshop won't start:  preferences file  was invalid (it has been deleted)

    Environment:
    Win7 Ultimate - 4 gig ram - CS5 Design Premium
Seemingly out of the blue - Photoshop stopped loading and I'm getting two error messages :
first:           ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 Extended:  "Could not load actions because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered
second:     ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 Extended:  "could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted).
I've deleted the two Preferences Files - but they don't seem to repopulate on startup - (or if they do they are deleted per the error message)
I tried copying a Preferences file from another working machine but that failed as well.
In addition: Dreamweaver is kicking out the following error messages - but opens and seems to work normally.
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:  Unable to open script file C:\Program Files (x86) Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5\Configuration\Shared\Spry\Designtime\EditingUtils.js (error 2).
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:  Unable to open script file "C:\Program Files (x86) \Adobe\Adobe dreamweaver CS5\Configuration\Shared\Common\Scripts\dwscripts.js" (error 2).
I'm in the middle of a big project and need to get back up quickly - any help would be much appreciated.
    Thx.

Run photoshop as administrator holding Ctrl + Alt + Shift, that should trigger a preferences reset prompt.
If that won't work I would do a backup and delete the entire Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings folder, not just the two files you mentioned.
As for your Dreamweaver issue, try deleting WinFileCache-********.dat (or FileCache.dat) from your Dreamweaver Config folder.
    Otherwise try deleting your preferences
    Exit Dreamweaver.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe.
    Rename the Dreamweaver preferences folder:
Dreamweaver CS5: Rename the Dreamweaver CS5 folder to, for example, Old Dreamweaver CS5.
Choose Start, type regedit in the Start Search, and then press Enter.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe
Remove the Dreamweaver preferences registry entries.

  • Illustrator CS5 freezing on start up

I'm not sure what went wrong but suddenly Illustrator stopped working.. not while I was actually using it but now it just won't load. I see the orange start up screen it says loading fonts and that's it. It get stuck and eventually I have to use the task manager to quit the program.
I have the CS5 Master collection and all the other software are running fine. I tried reinstalling Illustrator & it's still doing the same thing.
My next step is I'm going to try uninstalling the entire CS5 Master Collection & then reinstalling.
Was there some file or folder other than the actual location where I installed Illustrator that's not being deleted when I reinstall?
I'm guessing this is why it's still not working.

I was having this same issue. I had also installed some fonts, after which Illustrator froze while "installing fonts," so I removed the fonts, but it didn't solve the problem. Illustrator continued to freeze on start up, albeit, now during "initializing."
The solution that worked for me ended up being very simple: hold down the Command-Option-Shift keys while starting Illustrator. Apparently it resets the applications preferences.
Hope this works for you too!

  • TS2551 Iphoto freezes when going in preferences

since one day my Iphoto 09 freezes when going in preferences. Can anyone help?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then it's your current library that's the culprit.
If that's the case  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Uninstall damaged installation file.

I tried (and later succeded) installing spotify but I can't purge an earlier damaged installation file from the trash can. It just hangs saying it's deleting....and doesn't. Help anyone?

Thanks but tried that several times. Found this though which did the trick.
Start by creating a new user in the Accounts System Preferences panel. It doesn’t really matter what name or access level you give the new account; it’s going to have a very short existence. Once the account is created, move the troublesome file from the trash into the /Users/Shared folder. Now (via Fast User Switching or a traditional logout/login), log in as the new user. Open the /Users/Shared folder, and move the troublesome file into the new user’s trash.
Now logout of the new account and log back into your main account. Return to the Accounts pane in System Preferences, select the account you just created, and click the minus sign (or just hit Delete). The system will put up a dialog box asking if you’re sure you want to do this, with three options: Cancel, OK, and Delete Immediately. Select Delete Immediately, and the troublesome file (along with the new user and the disk space they used) will disappear. (If you just press OK, the files from the deleted user will still reside on your drive.)
It may seem a bit time consuming to delete a file in this manner, but it’s very safe (much safer than the Unix solution), and will work on files that seem immune to all other solutions.

  • Damaged Library File

Last week I opened my Itunes to find a progress bar pop up and tell me it's importing my itunes music library.xml, this takes a few seconds then a new box pops up with:
'The file itunes library does not appear to be a valid itunes library file. Itunes has attempted to recover your Itunes library and renamed this file itunes library (damaged).itl' I click OK then itunes starts up with only 10GB of music as oppose to the 20GB I have before this happened. I have tried renaming the damaged file but without any success. All my music is still on my HD but not only some is in my Itunes Library.
Any suggestions to get this fixed would be great, thanks.

+"I tried both your suggestions but without any luck or success."+
Not sure I understand. The first option takes the non-corrupt XML file and attempts to rebuild your complete Library.
If you do not have an un-damaged XML file, you have no choice but to rebuild your Library from scratch, losing your ratins, playcounts, playlists, etc. From your post, it seems you did not do this second step.
    First:
    a) Check that there may be iTunes created backup copies of you Library XML and ITL files. These would be located (usually) in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder under the "iTunes" directory. Try looking there for the Library Files.
    b) If you have the files either overlay the ITL file (copy-paste) from the "Previous" folder into the 'iTunes" folder (do this with iTunes closed). You can also use the XML file from a running iTunes as I described in my first post.
Second (if you do not have either of the above good files available) you'll need to follow the steps below to rebuild you Library:
    ‘Refresh/Rebuild’ Your iTunes Library
These steps will re-initialize your Library for you. Read it completely through and do the small trial run prior to implementing the whole thing. You will lose your Playlists, as well as reset your Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes. If these are important, post back and instructions on saving these (as best as your Library has) can be provided::
First, make sure that iTunes is correctly looking in the right Folder for your song files.
--- Make sure you know the current location of your music files (best to confirm this)
--- In iTunes choose: Edit==>Preferences==>’Advanced’ tab
--- Select 'Change' and browse to the music folder in your PC drive (if it isn’t already)
--- Click OK to save that setting
    -- In iTunes: Edit==>Preferences==>’Advanced’ tab.
---- Make sure that the 'Keep iTunes Music folder organized’ box is checked (if you want iTunes to organize your folder structure)
---- Also, that the ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’ box is unchecked
-- Click ’OK’ to accept and close the Preferences dialogue box.
-- Single click on the "Library" in the Source Pane
-- Single click first track in the Library
-- Select all songs (any one of several ways)
-- Delete – or select ‘Clear’ (yes, delete them all)
There will be 2 dialog boxes that pop up (one at a time). The first one asks ‘Are you sure you want to remove the selected items from the list?’ The second asks if you want the files moved to Recycle Bin or to keep them in the iTunes folder. You DO NOT want to send the files to the Recycle Bin, so select ‘Keep Files’. This will only delete the song reference links (both valid and broken). It will not delete the actual music files on your hard drive.
    IMPORTANT:
Perform a small test of this prior to doing it en mass. If you do not receive both dialogue boxes, then stop and see this link prior to continuing. You will need to reset your iTunes preferences and also retrieve the ‘deletion test’ song files from the Recycle Bin. Scott P.: My Source List is missing (or, resetting the prefs)
Also note: 'Deleting and Restoring' the song references will reset the Play Count, Ratings, Date Added, Last Played, Ratings, and EQ attributes (there may be a few others). It will remove all song references from any Static Playlists you have. Also, any Smart Playlists that depend on any of the aforementioned attributes will be impacted. This may be a small price to pay to recover your Library -- or not.... You can ‘Export’ your Playlists to an XML file for ‘Importing’ after the refresh. This can restore your static playlists. The export only saves the song info, not the underlying music files. Of course, exporting your playlists is to be done before you delete any song references within iTunes.
Once your song references are removed from iTunes, this is how to get them back:
1 - In iTunes: File==>'Add Folder to Library'
2 - Browse to your main iTunes folder and select it
    3 - For multiple music file locations, repeat 1 & 2
Depending on how small/large your music library is, the speed of your computer and your amount of RAM, this could take a few minutes to a few hours.
Your library should now be back to normal.

  • My CS PS5 freezes on start up

I got a new computer, brand new, and i installed the CS5 Production Premium. Now when I open Photoshop CS5 the x64bit version it freezes when it starts reading the preferences like so.
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/errorjn.jpg/

The first thing that I would do is to "trash" the Preferences file, as it could be corrupted.
This requires timing, but launch PS, and IMMEDIATELY, hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt, until you get a dialog screen, asking if you want to delete the Preferences and restore that to the default. That IS what you want to do. Test.
Good luck, and hope that gets you past the Loading Preferences.

  • How can I start System Preferences from the command line?

    Hello All,
I have an issue I'm not quite sure how to solve. I have been tasked within my business environment  with tightening security on a Mac Leopard system and I've been granted Admin Rights to do this on a temporary basis.
    The problem is as follows:
    1) The original Sys Admin that set up this system is gone, no longer available.
    2) He was a Dvorak Keyboard fan and set up the system for a Dvorak Keyboard.
    3) The system actually has a standard Apple keyboard and is marked accordingly, i.e., qwerty (Most Users in the building have stopped using this system altogether - a terrible waste of a good system - even though some of their apps can be run normally (US style qwerty settings). The command line is useless, as is texteditor.app and a few others unless you know Dvorak layout)
    5) When I open System Preferences, the Dvorak keyboard checkbox is grayed out and I cannot change it. There is no lock at the bottom of that particular screen for me to unlock.
    6) Even though I select the US Keyboard at Login, and some apps work accordingly (like MatLab for example) the terminal is borderline useless. I spent over 2 hrs yesterday doing what should have been able to be done in about 30 minutes. I estimate a frustrating and mistake prone additional 8 to 10 hours to do what is normally a a 4 hour job at the command-line.
    7) I do not have the time or desire to re-mark all the keys on the keyboard, particularly since it is not my call to do so, nor do I have the time to re-learn Dvorak touch-typing, and finally I do not want to re-load the entire system. I just want to change the darn keyboard to a standard qwerty keyboard that is somewhat useful in a terminal environment with vi, command line, etc. It's either that or I go mildly insane
This is frustrating as all get-out. The new Admin logged in and was able to uncheck his Dvorak settings (he is not a UNIX guy, nor is he comfortable om Macs), and we were hoping this was a system wide setting, but No. We re-booted the system, I logged in, still Dvorak, and the checkbox was still grayed out.
So I figure, short of re-loading the entre system and all the applications necesary, I can either start the Systems Preferences GUI using sudo and hopefully that will change system-wide settings, or I can delete the .AppleSetupDone file and resetup the system (if the keyboard settings are part of the setup) without spending a couple of days reloading everything and re-setting up users, networks, etc.
Needless to say, I am hoping for the easiest and quickest solution to this extremely frustrating and  aggravating problem.
    Thanks.

For my situation the following C# code does the job:
        Process.Start(
           @"c:\Program Files\National Instruments\CVI71\cvi.exe",
           @"c:\temp\experiment.c" );
    The file must already exist.

  • Windows 7 Crashes/Freezes when playing ANY Video files

lets see can anyone get their head around this one as it is driving me round the bend.
So... I have a media centre PC connected to my HDTV by VGA cable. I ran the PC on XP for a long time but last December, I upgraded it to Windows 7
    along with my laptop.
Cue 5 months of seamless media usage and network integration - it
worked like a dream and I played both HD and SD content with ease.
About two weeks ago, I was watching an HD '.mkv' file in Windows Media Centre and about 10 minutes into the video, the video file just Froze - both the video and the audio. I had to power down and restart the machine and started the video file again. About
5 minutes after re-starting the video file, it hung again (not at the same place in the video). I then went and watched the video on my laptop where
    it worked fine.
A few days after this (first time I had used it again since it hung up) I began watching an SD '.avi' file. About 1 minute into the video the display lost it's signal (the little built in 'no signal' graphic came up) and after a further 15 seconds, the audio
    cut out as well.
This latter behaviour is now happening every single time I try to watch any kind of SD or HD video of any file extention. This problem is also independant of what video player I use (windows media centre and windows media player classic) After a minute or so
the display cuts out and the audio quickly follows it.
Suffice to say, I was a little annoyed but knowing a good bit about computers I
decided to try and solve the problem taking the following steps.
    1) I uninstalled all my codecs and reinstalled the latest version of the K-Lite Codec pack. The latest version has support for windows 7 so I doubt its a compatibility issue here. After doing this the problem still persisted, exactly the same as before.
    2) I checked the date of the drivers for my video card (MSI nVidia 6200) and seen that they were dated sept 2009. I went onto the nVidia site and found the latest win7 drivers dated april 2010 - I installed these but still the problem is there.
    3) I then thought, maybe its a problem with the actual video card hardware itself. When I built my machine the parts supplier accidentally
sent me two of the same video card so I swapped out the existing one for a brand spanking new version of the same card. The problem is still EXACTLY the same.
So yes -I am rather annoyed and frustrated at the moment as I have absolutely no idea what is wrong with the machine and how it went from working to not working almost overnight.
I'd like to add also that the display is perfect when doing anything else on the computer - I can surf, play youtube videos, listen to music etc and it is absolutely no problem.
Put on a video and it cuts out the display like I have explained.
    halp.

    Hello Tim,
I decided to do a clean install, a fresh new installation of windows and all its updates, I didn't get the option of
    install SP1 yet.
After that I only installed Catalyst drivers: 11.5 and Realtek HD audio drivers, all downloaded on May 24 2011.
Then latest FFDShow and MPC-HC to test, both x64 versions Nothing else installed.
Only a fresh copy of windows with its updates and those mentioned drivers.
To my surprise, it happened a gain.
It still crashes after a while when playing MKV videos.
It's weird, because it doesn't happen with avi's or mp4's.
So, there must be something wrong with one of windows updates that creates this windows FREEZE.
Also there is no possibility to find out what error it is in "Event Viewer" as nothing gets recorded there. Anyone could
    advise?
    Thanks
