Freezes after repair

My G5 iMac (early 2005, first generation) showed the component (leaking condensator) so it was brought in for repair.
Now I have the problem (did absolutely not have that before) that the system sometimes freezes (mouse can be moved but nothing reacts) and then goes on like nothing happens. These freezes are rather short (less 10 seconds) but very annoying.
Any one any idea what hte problem might be and what can be done about it?
(I have the feeling but am not certain that it often occurs during disk transfers. But the Hardware testdisc shows no problems whatsoever)

"But do you also have any inkling what the cause might be?"
Do you have any devices connected to your computer other than the keyboard & the mouse? If so, there may be a conflict issue causing the freezing.
If not, then I would not do anything more to the computer until I spoke w/Apple since the problem did not happen until after the computer came back from the shop.

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze after being idle for a few minutes

I have a early 2008 MBP and just today the keyboard and trackpad freeze after not using it for a few minutes.  I was at work when it happened.  I plugged it in and started doing something else and a few minutes later came back and i couldn't move the mouse or do anything with the keyboard, but processes were still running.  For example, I have a fan speed app that sits in the toolbar, and it was still showing current fan speed.  So I restarted it, and it did it again.  So the next time it happened, I closed the lid and opened it up and it fixed it.  It's happened several times now after a few minutes of non use and I just close the lid and it fixes it.  Also, there was a period when I was using my computer for a couple of hours non stop and it didn't have a problem.  Only when I'm not touching the keyboard or trackpad does it do it.  since this keeps happening i have verified the disk in disk utility, done a hardware reset with cmd+opt+p+r, ran through system profiler to see if there were any problems with no results, and it still does it.  Anyone have any ideas?
It should be noted that not only does the battery not work for more than about 2 minutes, the left I/O board appears to be dying.  The power chord takes a considerable amount of wiggling and adjusting before it finds a place where it will actually charge. The audio out and the USB on that side are the same way. So I am aware of that problem. Also, I have had to take out the right side fan multiple times and disassemble and oil the bearing because it's going bad, which requires taking the top plate off, but I haven't had to do that for over 6 months. In my mind if the problem was caused by taking the top plate off, that would fry the entire top plate, which happened once when a technitian at a local company took the computer apart for a waranty repair.  All of these problems considered, I don't think they would have anything to do with the fact that the mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work after about 5-10 minutes of sitting idle. I have done nothing different since yesterday that would explain why it does this.
Also, I can't do anything with the install disk because the CD drive is dead.  But that's mostly because it was a piece of garbage to begin with.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.

After doing some more digging I was watching processes in Activity Monitor to see if I could see what process is failing.  I think the problem with with Chrome. It only happened when Chrome was open. And since then I reinstalled it and the problem has so far gone away.  So, I think the problems is solved.

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • My keyboard freezes after using the option key... what gives?

    I have a 17" MacBookPro with OSX 10.6.8
The problem:   My keyboard key freeze after using the " option key"  in Photoshop or  when downloading a file using the option key.
I can usually use it 2 or 3 times before it makes a chirping cricket like sound… then my keys freeze up.? The only way to correct it is to restart.
Anyone else have or had this issue?   it's frustrating.  What's the deal?

Can I just bring my laptop to the nearest service center and get this problem solved directly? You know, usually it will takes several days to receive the backup keyborad, I can't wait
You'll have to phone the service center and ask. (When I lived not far from Lenovo's Canadian service center and wanted to bring in a ThinkPad for warranty repair they said that would be OK with them but my unit would be put on a queue the same as if I'd shipped it in. They simply didn't offer walk-in, while you wait service.)
In the interim it may or may not be possible to reattach the key, even just temporarily, depending on whether it wasn't put on properly at the factory or if it's physically broken in some way. Or you could use an external keyboard until Lenovo sends you a replacement, etc.
I've just call the local service center, he told me that he can not repair individual key, they can just replace the whole keyboard..... How bad luck I am!!!

  • My iMac freezes after installation of Mavericks

My iMac set. with the new Mavericks has started freezing, or going into sleep mode, and will not wake up.  I have to hold the power button in for about ten seconds to force it to close down, wait a few seconds, the press power button again and it will boot normally.
It will sometimes just freeze the screen, and other times go to a blank screen.  Nothing will wake it up.
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

I have had consistent freezes after my MBP (15 in 2.4/2.2 GHz) goes to sleep since I installed Mavericks.  When it's frozen, the fan is going hard, but nothing will wake it up -- not mouse motion, key presses (including "force quit" chord), closing and opening lid, etc.  I have to force a shutdown with the power button, and restart it.
The only thing I've found to prevent the freeze is to prevent going to sleep.  There's nothing that I recognize as suspicious in the console log.  I've reinstalled Mavericks, I've fixed permissions, I've repaired the hard drive, I've removed plugins.  I don't know what else to try.  So I'm looking for suggestions, please!

  • All animation freezes after Log Out used

I've searched and searched and cannot locate another issue similar to this...wondering if someone could offer advice. After I took the iTunes 7, Front Row, and QuickTime updates recently, my dock animation, menu animations, etc freezes after using Log Out feature and switching to a different account. When I log into another account (or log back out and into my main account), all animation is gone with the Dock, menus, etc. I have to re-boot in order to get animation back. What is weird, is that it appears to just be animation. Functionally, I can still click on items in the dock or menu bar and have them do what they should. Just no animation. Not even the blue highlight as I move down over menu items. I have repaired permissions with nothing out of the ordinary. Any other ideas for me? Thanks in advance.
PS: I do not have fast user switching turned on. I always use log out user when needed.

Just one bump here for the weekend. Anyone else encountered this or can offer suggestions? Thanks.

  • Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install

Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install
Last week suddenly, after having changed or installed nothing, trying to boot into windows resulted in a frozen glowy window logo 'Starting Windows', which resulted in having to format the windows partition.
Since then I've found out that I can do everything except install gfx drivers.
I've installed firefox, all bootcamp drivers except gfx, swtor (doesn't run of course, but installs fine), quicktime, rebooting is fine after all this...
But as soon as I install any kind of graphics driver and reboot, it freezes at the glowy window logo.
    I have tried;
    The bootcamp included gfx driver
    Windows Update included gfx driver
    Official nVidia latest beta driver
    Official nVidia latest whql driver
    Official nVidia oldest whql driver
    nVidia Cuda driver, both versions
    All give the same result
I have formatted the entire harddrive and written zeros and made the windows partition in a physically different location to make sure it's not a harddrive issue, no luck.
I have tried both Windows 7 x86 and x64 with matching drivers, same results.
Tried booting with no devices attached, no luck.
This all seems to me like a bust gfx card, were it not that under Lion everything works fine, even gaming (WoW).
Techtool Pro's test machine shows no errors.

I am running Lion on a Mac Mini Server wherein I placed a Bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been testing Windows Media Center using a CableCard Tuner installed in a SiliconDust HomeRun box.
All was well until I received a Windows notification of an NVIDIA driver update. After the update, I now freeze at the same point that you do in the Windows startup splash screen.
I rolled back the driver using the Windows control panel associated with the device. Still freezes.
Windows repair does not have a fix. I can't get windows to start in "safe mode" so I can remove the additional apps that NVIDIA installed during the update.
I'm certain the freeze is associated with the NVIDIA driver.

  • G4 running OS 10.5.4 freezes after start-up

My G4 is running Mac OS 10.5.4. It started frequently freezing after restart many months ago. I have to hard restart a few times and then it will eventually work, or, I can start-up in safe mode and then restart and it will work just fine. Once we are up and running there are no problems. I cannot link this problem to any new downloads or programs. I thought it might be hard drive failure and replaced the hard drive on the machine, but I still have a problem.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Welcome!
Can you be more specific about which G4 you have? There are a number of variants that can have different hardware issues. These two Apple tech documents are helpful in determining the exact model:
G4 Minitowers prior to Jan 2002
    G4 Minitowers since Jan 2002
As you are running Leopard, I assume that your processor is at least 867mHz.
Was the computer stable prior to installing Leopard?
Did you use Leopard retail install disks?
Do you have enough RAM? How about free space on the hard drive? Free space should be at least 15 percent, more if you have limited RAM. %12MB RAM is about the minimum I'd try for runnign Lepoard.
When it freezes, do you get a bunch of cryptic writing on the screen or does it lock up with no information showing on-screen?
If the problems showed up after an incremental update (example: applying the 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 update), sometimes repairing permission on your boot volume can help.
Do you have any third-party PCI cards installed? What video card do you have?
I know this is a lot to digest, but is a start on the troubleshooting process.

  • Freezes after setting ISO in camera app

The phone freezes after the following:
    1. Set ISO to 800 in manual mode click a picture or two.
    2. See the images from preview panel in camera app(touch bottom right of image)
    3. Get back to camera.
The only way to get back is to restart the phone using hard keys.

Last thing you can try, repair your phone with SUS or PCC and stay away from taskillers, task managers, antivirus, ram apps, booster apps, etc

  • Photo booth freezing after taking photos or videos...

so almost every time i use my iSight and photobooth to take a photo or record a video my mac freezes and i cant force quit or even click on anything. i end up having to manually shut down my mac and then reboot it. it still saves the photos/videos most of the time but its very obnoxious that it freezes after each time i try to take a photo, especially since i just got this MacBookPro a week ago.
has anyone experienced similar problems and know any solutions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, UnadmirableActs
so such problems can be caused by software issues you can fix.
Mac OS X is a robust operating system, but it does require some simple occasional maintenance for best performance. It sounds to me like your Mac may need some maintenance now.
First, you should Safe Boot your Mac. Safe Boot forces an automated OS X disk check and repair routine. If your disk needs significant work, Safe Boot may take several minutes to finish. Do NOT try to use your Mac while in Safe Mode. When your desktop appears in Safe Mode, immediately restart your Mac normally. Use the Safe Boot procedure the first time you start your OS X Mac after any hard shutdown (whenever you "manually shut down my mac".)
When your Mac restarts normally after a Safe Boot, you should repair your startup disk's permissions. Depending upon how much repair is needed, permissions repair may take many minutes or even a few hours the first time you do it. Subsequent runs should take only a few minutes.
For normal maintenance (other than after a hard shutdown,) you can also use Disk Utility rather than a Safe Boot to verify your startup disk.
As soon you have performed your OS X maintenance, try the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to test your iSight's function. If you encounter problems after having performed OS X maintenance, try the reset process suggested in the Troubleshooting suggestions. The reset usually restores proper function of the built-in iSight.

  • Video downloads freeze after a minute or so

When I download videos, for example from a site such as Vimeo, or the iPad promo video from the Apple site, the video freezes after a minute or so and will go no further. Any ideas? Is it down to the size of my processor? There doesn't seem to be a problem with viewing stuff on YouTube, or with TV programmes from the BBC.
I've noticed that downloading stuff other than videos is rather hit and miss anyway - the download speed will suddenly fall and once it's below about 180kb/s it stops altogether- sometimes if I stop the download and start it again straightway it will carry on for a bit longer, but sometimes I have to start again from scratch. I don't know whether this is related to the problem with the videos.
    Any ideas, please?

    HI,
The iPad video is not available for download from the Apple site. You have to launch iTunes, select iTunes Store in the Source list on the left then type in: *Apple Keynotes* in the search field top right of the iTunes window.
Vimeo requires that your Java Script be turned on. Go to Safari/Preferences and select the Secuirty tab. Where you see: Web content Make sure the top 3 boxes are checked,.
Vimeo also requires the most recent version of Flash. If you have Flash installed, first uninstall the old copy then reinstall new.
    Uninstall Flash
    Install Flash
    Then repair disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Your download speeds are determined by the type of internet connection you are using. Broadband/ DSL ... you can check download and upload speeds here. http://www.speedtest.net/
If you have a broadband connection your download speed should be about 16Mbps

  • Macbook pro freezes after sleep, after 6 months of not having that problem

    Hello,
I'm really frustated with my macbook pro. Like the tittle says, my computer freezes after waking up and the only thing to do is use the On/Off button. It is a macbook pro '13 2010.
This problem first happened around 6 months ago. Around Feb '11, i experienced the same issue. First thing i noticed was that the wifi suddenly stopped working. To try to fix it, I turned airport off and then couldn't turn it back on and had to restart my machine. Then when closing the lid and then opening it again, my computer would work for about 5 min and then freeze. Nothing worked and I had to shut it down using the power button.  Then the problem got worse because the computer started freezing randomly. I know it wasn't an application problem because it happened using different apps. I took my computer to an authorized apple service provider and they told me the harddrive had some bad sectors i think, and they replaced the harddrive because I was still under earranty at the time.
Now, Sept '11, the problem came back. First the airport problem happened and now my computer freezes when waking up, the exact same thing that happened 6 months ago. I went to disk utility and repaired disk permisions and still no solution. My warranty expired last month so calling apple won't be of any help. I installed lion the day it came out and was working without any problems until now, so I don't think lion is the problem.
Has anybody had this same problem with their computer? I don't know what to do or how to tell if my harddrive is causing the problem again.
    Thanks

All of the new unibody MBs/MBPs can use (6GB 4X2GB)
But yes you should definitely make sure the RAM is seated correctly and you didn't touch the gold part of the RAM during installation. Though if something was seriously wrong it would have made loud obnoxious sounds while you tried to start up.
Aside from Installation issues, you should reset the PRAM as noted previously. Hold down command-option-p-r at startup until it chimes twice.
OP, looking at Super Talent's website they don't even have 1066MHz chips listed in their DDR3 chips. All I see is a jump from 800MHz (DDR2) to 1333MHz (DDR3).
Either way, I can't imagine you got that great a deal for the RAM that even if it is seemingly the correct RAM you can get better deals in the links I posted in my other post.

  • IBook G4 freezes after 10 minutes

my iBook G4 freezes after a few minutes of use.
it starts up but freezes after around 10 minutes (variable 5 - 20 mins). The screen is frozen and no keyboard or mouse input is accepted. Only way out I found was to power-off. This happens from cold.
When warm, it freezes on startup with blue screen.
I have been able to clear the disc and reload MAC OS from install discs and the symptoms are identical. There are no modifications, no devices connected, no network connection and the wifi is turned off. It makes no difference whether the battery is removed and run on power supply or simply run on fullycharged battery.
    I tried:
    1. remove/replace wifi card and memory check connections OK.
    2. Startup from install disc and repaired disc, although it was OK. Disc seems to be fine.
    3. Reset PROM.
    4. stored the iBook in a cold place and it ran for longer.
    5. Ran a temperture monitor - all temperatures are OK.
    6. I have tried using the latest MAC OS 10.4 and the original one supplied with th iBook (10.3).
I do not think it is a disc, airport card, cooling fan or battery fault. It could be a memory module failure or some motherboard fault. Its not software or driver.
I think the only thing left is that some hardware fails when it gets wram and works agin when cold. The colder t is to at startup, the longer it works for.
I have now run out of ideas.

It ran long enough to install from disc-1 then froze. After restarting, it asked for disc-2 and that loaded then froze. After restarting, it worked a short while then froze. To get this far, I left the iBook in a cold place before starting it up and this extended the runtime from the normal 5 minutes to as much as 25 minutes.
I disconnected the disc and it behaved the same while starting from the CD drive so I think the disc is OK or its more than one cause.
This feels like a dry solder joint problem, to me - applying pressure on the motherboard or lowering the temperature will temporarily fix it for a few minutes.
If I pay for a repair then, statistically, it will last 3 months longer so its too risky. It would not be so bad if Apple could repair it with confidence that it will not have the same problem again, but to do that they would have to admit to what causes the this problem with so many iBooks.

  • Suddenly my kernel panics or system freezes after loging in

My new MBP worked fine for about a month. Then, 2 days earlier it longer shutdown times than normally. But everything was still working. Suddenly I couldn't view flashvideos in firefox although I heard the audio. Then I got beachballs when trying to look into my emails (with "Mail") and couldn't start *.mov-files with Quicktime. Then I also got beachballs when I selected files in the Finder. After a while these beachballs disappeared (but they kept coming back). At this I time I already had some kernel panics.
After repairing permissions with the harddsik utility-program I got kernel panics one after the other and now I can only startup in Safe-mode, since everytime I log myself in the system freezes or a kernel panic starts the MBP new.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
