Freezes during Import from Camera

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a new Macbook (exciting isn't it?) absolutely love it but I am having one small issue with iPhoto. Whenever I try to import some media from my camera iPhoto freezes whenever it comes to a video. Is there anything I can do about this? Is there a way to specify what I take from my camera?
Thanks guys.

Hello.
If your camera mounts on your desktop as an external drive, ignore the iPhoto Import Window that opens when you connect the camera. Instead, do File > Import to library. This brings up a window you can navigate to select your photos for import. You can even set it to column view and see a preview of files before you import. Select the photos you want and Import them. Then try a video clip and see if iPhoto can import it.
If your camera does not mount on the desktop, you can use a card reader, which does. The above procedure will then work.
If iPhoto does not like the video clips, use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload them. Image Capture gives you the option to "import some..." and select the files from the device. Upload to a folder anywhere NOT in the iPhoto Library folder. When done you can import into iPhoto and delete the initial location.
I have only recently begun having trouble getting iPhoto to upload video clips from my camera card. What changed (besides the recent software updates) is that I got my first 2 Gig card. I don't know if the problem with my video clips lies with iPhoto or with my older card reader not liking the 2 Gig card. I suspect it's the latter. Anyway, I upload my photos directly into iPhoto. Then I open Image Capture, select a video clip, and upload to the desktop. Image Capture seems to stall or freeze when uploading. The progress bar makes no visible progress. I have to click Cancel for the upload, then eject the card. After I do this, the movie file will appear on my desktop. I have only got this to work with one movie at a time. The first time I had to Force Quit my camera card ("mass storage"), but after doing so the video clip was there. Once on my desktop, iPhoto has no trouble importing the clips. It's not pretty, but it works. And once I fill this 2 Gig card, I'm going back to the trusty 1 Gig cards. (Until I feel like buying a new card reader.)

  • Hang during import from camera or media - HELP!

iPhoto hangs during import from camera or media reader. Works for 20 or more photos, then hangs. No response at all. Must force quit. After restarting the import, it will go further the next time, then hang again. And again. And again. Eventually the import completes. After that, all is OK until next import. VERY FRUSTRATING. Especially with 8GB media cards. ARRGH!
I've tried rebuilding iPhoto library (all options). Using iPhoto 7.1.5 on OS X 10.5.6. 4GB ram, intel dual core.
Help me Obe-Wan. You're my only hope.

I usually use the media reader. After the imports started hanging is when I tried importing direct from the camera to see if it made a difference. No difference.
I've reformatted the media. No difference. Still hangs on first import after reformat. Multiple media cards, all same result. Tried different USB ports, same result. Tried different media readers. Same result.

  • IMovie'08 (7.1) Crashes during Import from Camera

Well, it is hard to say simpler then the subject line of this posting... iMovie'08 (7.1) Crashes during Import from Camera (PANASONIC PV-GS500). I use 24GHz MacBook Pro with 4Gig of RAM. Importing to OWC 500Gig RAID drive, as well as to the internal 200Gig 7200 RPM drive. So it certainly looks like not because of hardware. I tried to remove DIVX and Pearl plugins from QT folder in Library as it was suggested in previous postings to no success. It seems like I am not the only one with this problem here. If iMovie cannot import from camera then what is it good for? By the way, the previous version of iMovie works fine importing etc. Did I just wasted $79.00? Anybody knows the solution? I hope somebody can help.

    FOUND FIX
I found this fix in another thread post. iMovie 7 appears to be bugged, but you can import movies if you download iMovie6 HD. It's apparently free from apple for iLife 08 users.
Here's the link so you can download it.
    http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OSX/downloads/061-3532.20070807.nq3ER/iMovieHD6.dmg
Hours spent trying all sorts and iMovie HD ... just seems to work. Someone suggested that I use an external HD to improve performance. Just make sure you don't use Fat32 because it bombs when the file size gets to 2GB lol. It's a limitation of the Fat32 format. Since you can't access NTFS directly, you're a bit stuffed if you want to use the external HD with you Mac and PC. Either format it for your mac or your pc.

  • IPhoto Freezes When Importing from Camera

Each time I've tried to import from my camera iphoto freezes during the import and I have to force quit it. I have tried copying the photos from the cameras folders to the computer and then importing from there but it also freezes. I did not have any problems importing using iphoto on 10.4 and I have now tried to import onto a friends computer (PC) and it works fine (so not my memory card or camera gone wrong).
Any suggestions on how to import successfully????????

    Nyssa
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Lightroom freezes during import from SD card

    OSX 10.9.5
    LR 5.4
Macbook Pro approximately 5 years old
This has happened all of the last three times I'm importing to Lightroom from an SD card that came out of my Nikon D7000.  I'll get about 175 photos through an import from a shoot that day.  Might have 800-1000 jpegs to import.  At around 175 the whole process just hangs.  I can still use other programs but LR is hanging.  I have to end the task (successful) but quitting LR is impossible without a Force Quit.  I've tried different SD cards, that's not the issue.  Any thoughts?

Photos > View > Show Sidebar
YOur card should be listed near the top of theSidebar. Select it and check the box above to Open Photos for this device.
You can also make Photos the default app in Image Capture.

  • Randomly skips .mov during import from camera

Several months ago I upgraded to Tiger and iLife '06. I was excited to move to iPhoto 6 because of its ability to import stills as well as movies. iPhoto 6 never fails to import all of the stills from my Minolta Dimage XT, but the importing of movies is flakey. By flakey I mean that it skips importing some .mov files from the camera, so for example out of 6 .mov files it might import 4 of them leaving 2 that won't import. I've tried dragging them directly from the camera's folder to iPhoto. I've tried importing from the SD card via a card reader instead of the camera and the same problem occurs.
When iPhoto decides to skip importing a particular .mov file, the only way for me to get it to import is to copy the .mov file(s) from the SD card to a folder on the hard drive and then import them into iPhoto from the folder on the hard drive.
There is no apparent reason that these particular .mov files are skipped. The skipped .mov files have been various sizes, names, etc. For some reason iPhoto just won't import certain .mov files from the SD card. No error is ever given and I can't seem to find any message in any log file as to why.
Has anyone ever experienced a similar issue or know of any way for me to make iPhoto's importing of .mov files more reliable?
    G4 15in TiBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPhoto 6

    Heya Crespino,
I've heard of this issue before but don't know the root cause. Oddly it is always with Minolta or Canon cameras. I'm not sure if there is a corolation there.
    Thing I would try:
1.) Battery power on your camera should be at full - or run off of AC if you can - thats even better
2.) Make sure the date and time on the camera are in sync with the computer - this affects the computer's ability to see and correctly identify files
3.) Reformat your SD card - this is a function on your camera - I would reformat the card between every shoot- not just delete the pictures - check your camera's manual for "reformat media card"
4.) Try importing with the Image Capture Application - this will usually find any pictures / movies that do not identify correctly in iPhoto -- Esentially it is not nearly as picky as iPhoto is so it would see movie files that are corrupted / or slightly different in format
5.) Consult with Minolta - do they make a drive for this camera under the Mac OS X 10.4 - that might make imports easier for you
    Hope that helps!

  • Imovie slows down then freezes while importing from camera

I am trying to import a movie from my canon hv10. I've never had problem the last 2 movies I did. but this time around it starts importing, and a few clips later, slows down to 1/8th time. then freezes. The camera is still playing but it has stopped importing. I have tried to pause it to let it catch up. Restarting it numerous times. It is being imported into my 500 GB hard drive. I have 400 GB available. It's worked before in HD. Any ideas? anything would be helpful, I've searched every single message board so far. thanks.

I had a smilar problem. it came up when I changed OS to Leopard OS X 10.5.
My Imovie HD 5 had been working fine until then under earlier OS versions, both in LP as well as in normal mode. Then all of a sudden importing stopped eery few seconds.
I checked many discussions in this forum and tried a lot of suggested solutions, to no avail. I have now come to realise that Leopard is the problem, not the camera, the cable, or preferences or good old iMovie HD.
I simply went back to an older laptop (iBook) running OS 10.3.9 and iMovie 3 . No problem whatsoever importing clips (just had to start a new project about every 20 minutes of clip import). Then attached my external harddrive via firewire, copied the projects to the Hard Disk and then opened them with iMovie HD 5 and bingo: the project was OK and could be further worked on.
So that does not solve the basic problem, but is not too complicated as workaround.

  • IDVD 08 freezes while importing from camera for OneStep DVD

I am importing video from a Sony camcorder (dv) as the first step in a onestep DVD process. I have tried two different tapes and it has frozen both times - once at 14 min. and the second at 19 min. It seems to be in the middle of a scene in both cases. The camera is still running, but iDVD is no longer importing and is reported as "No Response". Have to Force Quit.
    Any ideas?

I appreciate the disk space problem, as the first time I tried to capture, it ran out of space on my internal drive. That's when I moved the capture to the firewire drive.
So I checked the internal drive - 13.6GB available before capture. In addition, I monitored it throughout the capture process (using the application "What Size", which tells you how big all your files are) and found it stayed stable throughout the capture sequence.
Meanwhile, the firewire drive showed the captured file to be growing as it captured more video. I've tried to capture this particular tape twice, and I see that it froze with the captured file size at EXACTLY the same size: 4,294,934,528 bytes. This is about 19 min, 53 sec. of video.
I wonder if a) it only really works capturing to the internal drive, or b) if something got messed up when I ran out of space the first time. I think it did capture all or most of the tape when I ran it the first time on the internal drive.
I guess I could clear more space on the internal drive and give that a go again. Ideas?

  • Freeze after import from built-in iSight

I go to File > Import from Camera..., record my lovely visage, and then I click Done. iMovie imports the new video just fine, I see it pop up in the little clips tray, but then I'm faced with a problem.
The capture window is still open and if I click the "Done" button or close the capture window, iMovie just freezes and I have to force quit.
When I re-open iMove, everything is fine, my project and the new clip still exist, but I've just wasted a lot of time.
It happens every time and it's really frustrating. What's going on?
    Console offers little of interest...

There are a few other threads out there based on iMovie freezing after importing, but most are people importing from other devices, not the built-in iSight camera. None has any good advice about how to correct it, that I can see.
I suppose the good news is it's not a problem endemic to the iSight camera capture option itself. I'm willing to bet it has something to do with disk fragmentation or dropped frames during capture -any of which a standard NLE would tell you about instead of crashing.
I guess the usual salvo of countermeasures are called for: verify the target volume using disk utility, defragment the drive, try building a new user account on your Mac and try the capture again (just to rule out any unruly preferences in your current config). Worst case, reinstall iMovie and see if it keeps happening. Now, having said all that, I haven't actually taken the time to try it myself. So, grain of salt, and all that.

  • Import from Camera Screen - cut off

    Folks,
I am trying tom import from my Sony DCR-DVD201 camcorder. I can import fine, but the "Import from Camera screen" is cutoff and black for the first 3/4 of the screen -- I can see only the very bottom edges of the video clips.
I can still import, but is there a fix/setting for this issue?

i have this bug too. resizing the window, and then hitting play will show the whole window. i have a Panasonic HDC-SD7. it works, but a very annoying.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - Don;t empty the system trash. The originals that you deleted from the Desktop are in there and are the only copies you have unless they are still in the camera.

  • Import from camera

Any idea how to import from a camera these days? In Aperture it found the camera automatically and you could select photos and import.
With Photos it seems that if I go to File > Import I can find my camera shown as an external drive but I can't then choose a sub folder so I can't seem to import any photos that way.
The way I'm doing it at the moment is through Finder - dragging and dropping onto the desktop and then importing that way.

Importing from cameras should work just as it did in iPhoto. As LarryHN points out, if it doesn't, let us know exactly what is occurring.
IF you have not yet done so, enable Sidebar (from the View menu). This will list the connected camera under the Devices group. When you select your camera, confirm that the Open Photos... option is checked.

  • Originals auto modified on import from camera

I discovered that iPhoto has modified a lot of my pictures when importing from camera. Not only vertical photos (bacause of auto rotate I believe) but also landscape. Mostly photos with high contrast or too dark/too light photos are modified and enhanced. This makes me angry! I usually export photos to modify in PS and this way I do not work with the original! I suppose the modified version is not lossless.
I can't find out how to turn off this auto modifying.
    Any suggestions?

    hansik:
Are you aware that you can have iPhoto use PS as the default editor? The edited version is saved in the Modified folder and the originals never get touched. The only caveat is that you do not change the extension or file name. If you need to do either then you do a Save As to the desktop and then import as a new file.
Are you concerned about the thumbnail size increase due to HD space issues? There is a way to have your source files on an external HD and only have aliases, thumbnails and the modified files on your PB. My 27G (15,600+ files) of image files on my second HD are represented by a 1.75 G iPhoto library on my boot drive. When the external drive is not connected the library is still operational on a limited basis: you can view thumbnails, create, delete and move album folders, add comments and, with some hassle but doable, add keywords. You can't edit, work with books, slideshow, etc. or anything that requires moving thumbnails. Once the HD is remounted the library is fully functional again. Great for laptops with limited space.

  • Why does the "Import from Camera" selection open up iSight instead of my camera?

My Sony Cyber-Shot is connected my iMac through the included USB. About an hour - two hours ago I clicked on the Import from Camera option and it showed my videos recorded using my camera, but now when I click the option it opens up the built in iSight instead. Can someone please help me? How can I get it to open up my camera video files instead of iSight?

I don't have the Sony, but on my Canon you have to have the camera in "play" mode and when you plug in the usb the camera asks to what do you want the camera to connect. You choose "computer." In other words, it makes a difference in what order you connect things.

I want to import movies from mi iPhone 4S and the "import from camera" option doesn't work. When I click de button (or pressing cmd+I, or going to archive > import from camera) the arrow turns to the colored beach ball of death and the aplication doesn't response.
Any solution? If I import videos from archives there's any problem, but I want to import videos from my iPhone 4S

Yes, I tried with iMovie 11 and it works perfectly, I can import videos from my iPhone 4S without any problem. But with Final Cut Pro X I got this problem
I don't know what to do, I tried to repair permissions, erase the events folder... And nothing, the problem stills there
I can use iMovie and then import from Final Cut, but it's a double work. I want to use this option in Final Cut
