Freezes on open/new file in Photoshop CS3

Photoshop CS3 displays a strange behavior of freezing for 30-45 seconds every time I try to open or create a new file, regardless of its size or format. Once the file is open Photoshop returns to its usual behavior, and I experience no slow downs. Has anybody experienced this problem,or knows what may be causing it?

Adobe does not require a non networked or "compatible" printer -- we don't even require a printer at all.  But if you have a printer installed, it works best if the printer actually works correctly.  Photoshop does not have any notion of "compatible" printers - Photoshop will work with any functioning printer.
Dear Chris,
I believe you truly that Photoshop will work with any printer at all -- up to version 8.x/CS1. The Problem appeared with the release of CS3. Maybe Adobe has discovered the world of printing in a total new manner?
Your printer driver (or OS) is causing the delays when Photoshop asks for simple information about that printer - information that should never involve contacting the networked printer.   It's sort of like "Hey, what's the name of the street we're on? I don't know, let me jog to the Library of Congress, research that and get back to you".   The drivers are doing something they should not, taking too long to do it, and nobody seems to be able to explain why.
First of all there are plenty of users worldwide who won't miss the lack of a printing function in Photoshop in general. Adobe should devote oneself to develop a solid image manipulation program. And if I would be asked to the name of the street we are on, my answer would have a serious delay too, cause I'm to polite to answer why the hell you don't have a look for yourself. If Photoshop is unable to handle a "misconfigured" network attached  printer, the developers should ask the colleagues of the InDesign team. It's not only possible to open an InDesign file immediately, some of us even have printed successfully to that "sticky" printers.
Some printer drivers are also causing crashes - again, usually when asked for simple information.  Again, this should not be happening.
Those delays and driver crashes are not caused by Photoshop, and are not under the control of Photoshop.  The best we can do is control when they happen (at launch, or when opening a document).
So, you're blaming the wrong party here.
Bump. Okay, the printer, the printer driver or someone else is the evil. But even in case this is true, it is your company's job to offer a workaround that is worthy of the name. Things are not perfect and you have to fix it.

  • Bridge won't open JPG files in Photoshop CS3

I changed my preferences to remove the check-box "prefer Adobe camera RAW for Jpeg and TIFF files" , restarted Bridge and tried to open a JPEG from bridge directly into photoshop. But double clicking on the image in bridge opened "paint".
So I change the Bridge preferences back to Prefer ACR for JPEG again, restart Bridge, and then bridge tells me that it cannot find Photoshop CS2. CS2 is not even loaded on this machine anymore.
So then I go to the file type associations preferences and "browse" to the CS3 version of photoshop, restart bridge, and double click on a JPEG and it again says that CS2 cannot be found. I change the association again using the "browse" to CS3 and then it opens the image up in "Paint" again.
Why won't Bridge open JPEG's in ACR anymore?
Why won't bridge open JPEG's in Photoshop CS3 anymore?

Bill, thanks for the reply. But I do not think that the file associations is the answer here. If I am using bridge to open files in ACR or Photoshop, I do not believe that I need to change the windows file type association. I have other PC's where the file association is not photoshop and bridge works fine opening these files. In fact, when using windows explorer to navigate JPG files, I do NOT want photoshop being opened to preview these images. On my other PC's, I can both preview JPG's using windows picture viewer, and open the JPG's via bridge in ACR. Furthermore, Photoshop CS2 is NOT the application listed for JPG's in the folder options in the control panel. So the problem that I have here has something to do with Bridge or perhaps something is corrupted int he files.
The reason why I suspect a corruption, is that not all files behave in the same manner in bridge. Some files with the same extension open as I would expect, while others do not. I did not realize this fact when I made my original post.

  • Opening Raw file in Photoshop CS3

I downloaded Photoshop CS3 and when I open a raw image a screen called "Photoshop Raw Options" appears. It asks the dimensions, channels, and header sizes. I don't know what to fill in those boxes. I work on a Mac. Help
    -Abby

When I removed CS2 the procedure also removed Adobe Gamma. This is a little utility that enables you to do a very basic monitor calibration. I had been using it, so this caused a little concern at first. But then I used a program that came with my video card so I haven't had a need for Adobe Gamma. Other than that, I had no problems.
Be aware that Camera Raw is updated about four times each year. You need to watch the forum because it is a good place to find out about the updates. Alternatively, in Photoshop if you go to the help menu there is an option to check for updates. It might be a good idea to run that about every three months. If there is an update available it will be installed for you.

  • How to open RAW files in photoshop cs3

Three years ago I purchased a Nikon 7000 and the cs3 will not open the Raw files

That would require ACR 6.3 which shipped with Photoshop CS5. Your best bet is to convert your Raw files to dng format  and then they should open in CS3.
Get the latest DNG converter here:

  • Suddenly Can't Open RAW files in Photoshop CS3!

I have never had troubles with photoshop before, but since I installed windows 7 and reinstalled CS3, Photoshop is no longer able to open camera raw files! When I attempt to open one a window pops up stating: Could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document. What on earth is going on?! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

Thats Correct. First check if there are two versions or not if there is, then it would be better to delete them and re-download it from this link
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4038&fileID=3755
After the download unzip the files and then copy the Camera raw.8bi in this location
    >>> C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats
PS ::  Use Program Files and Program Files(X86) according to your computer.

  • Opening raw files in photoshop cs3

can anyone help please, can i open raw image files in cs3? do i need a plug in or a download?

You need Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).  Go to the download page and download the last vesion for CS3, believe it was 4.6.
Be aware that each version of Photoshop has its own series of ACR.
So if you have a latter model camera it might not work with an older ACR.  To check look here  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html

  • Unable to open DNG files in Photoshop CS3

i have tried pulling these onto the alias and opening from within photoshop, but always get the error message "photoshop does not recognize this type of file"
i looked into the DNG converter, but obviously that only converts things to DNG files.
    any help is appreciated.
    JB

    Thanks for the comment -
    I am on a Mac.
By alias I mean that I drag a file to the dashboard to launch it.
When I go to "file/open" from within Photoshop I can not see any DNG reference, nor will it allow me to open a DNG file. They all appear greyed out.
    Attaching screen grabs.

  • Why Cant I open NEF files In Photoshop CS3?

  • How to open animated .GIF files in Photoshop CS3 and newer

Q: Since ImageReady is long gone from Photoshop, how can I open animated GIF files in Photoshop CS3 and newer?
    A: File -> import-> video to layers.
In the dialogue box type "*.*" to show all file types.
Select your GIF file and which frames to import.
They will now be available in your animation palette.

    Zeno
curt y, sorry for the late reply, I tried that but I doesn't work. I have to choose at least two files in the Load Layers window in order for the OK button to be available and then some action script uses the different files to make layers and merges them but not from the frames of the gif file. I can undo through the script to see what it did but it never accessed the frames of the gif file, just the first frame. Choosing "make frames from layers" in the animation palette only puts the original files into layers - that is only the first frame of the gif file.
I guess I'm out of luck with the 64  bit version of Photoshop as Zeno suggested :-(
What program would you people suggest for opening each frame from gif files?

  • Can't open Camera Raw (CR2) files in Photoshop CS3?

I can't seem to open Camera Raw CR2 files in Photoshop CS3, my CameraRaw plug in version says it's 4.6 - any help appreciated.

Have you tried opening up out of Bridge? If that doesn't work you may new need to download a new driver from Canon. All my peripherals are Canon and I am always having to download new drivers everytime I update. Fortunatly they are really easy to find on Canon's site.

  • Can't open new file - Where do I file photoshop bugs?

"Could not complete your request because of a program error."  popups up when I try and File -> Open.  My only work around has been to close and re-open photoshop, constantly.
2012 Mac Air OS, 10.10.2, Photoshop 2014.2.2 (20141204.r.310 x64). This did not happen before I updated photoshop.
** Where does one file bugs or feedback for photoshop? or does Adobe not care? **
I can't find a better location. I saw someone else posted a similar discussion questions Dec 30th, so obviously this is not being fixed.  I find not opening new files to be pretty major function regression. If I open like 10 files when I first open photoshop it's ok, but then when I forget I need one more file, I see this error, the programs only been open 15mins, I've barely done anything to trigger a program error! I have to close and reopen everything. Making a new file is possible.

If what you see were "a bug", everyone would see it.  If it's unique to you, especially if you have not yet deleted and recreated your Photoshop preferences, you cannot call it "a bug".
That error message suggests there may something wrong with your Photoshop install or some other fault on your system,
Don't cry wolf prematurely, lest Adobe really stops paying attention to you.
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Note: If this process doesn't work for you while you're using a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard, attach a wired keyboard and retry.
Important: If you re-create the preferences by deleting the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings file, make sure that you only delete that file. If you delete the entire settings folder, you also delete any unsaved actions or presets.
Reinstalling Photoshop does not remove the preferences file. Before reinstalling Photoshop, re-create your preferences.
NEW Video! Julieanne Kost created a video that takes you through two ways of resetting your Photoshop preferences. The manual preference file removal method is between 0:00 - 5:05. The keyboard shortcut method is between 5:05 - 8:18. The video is located here.

Important: Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If  you require access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting, see How to access hidden user library files.

  • Cannot open files or create new files in Photoshop cc trial

    Hi,
after getting no support from your phone support line. I am writing here in hopes that this issue can be resolved. I cannot open files or create new files in Photoshop CC trial. Please help

You can open Photoshop, you cannot create new documents. If you click file>new, the normal new dialog box opens, if you click "ok" it goes away. If you double click a PSD it focuses the Photoshop window. Nothing else happens.
For me this is a new issue today. My computer is an i7/780, more than capable of Photoshop, and has run it fine up until now. My keyboard started freaking out last night and doing things I didn't want it to. I suspect it changed a setting or broke something.
I have uninstalled and re-installed and it did not resolve the issue.
This is obviously a critical issue that needs immediate attention.
