Freezes on "Searching for local disks" on boot up

I installed 10.3 on my G4 recently. Everything worked fine for about a week, and then during boot up the progress bar gets about 75% done and gets stuck on "Searching for local disks". It never moves on. I tried going to disk utility, I get to the first page asking which language to use and I hit english. It moves to the next page, to prepare installation, and it just freezes. I can move the cursor, but nothing will happen. I cannot run disk utility or reinstall. It just stalls at this point. Any ideas?!

JRH13:
Try this:
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
• Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
• Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
• Log in and empty Trash.
• Restart normally and log in.

Will it boot in Safe Mode? See

Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.

  • EMac Freeze on 'waiting for local disks' startup bar

    hello!
my emac is starting up completely normally except when the startup bar gets to "waiting for local disks", where it freezes, although i do have control of the mouse when this happens. i left my computer on all day (maybe 11 hours) and when i returned, it was still in this state. restarting the computer without an ethernet cable results in the same issue.
is there anything else i can be doing to fix this? i didn't think this would be much of an issue, so i haven't done anything besides restart without the ethernet cable. please help!

nevermind! i had a corrupt DataTraveler® 2 GB usb attached to it during startup... removed that and it works fine

  • Won't boot up, it says "Waiting for local disks"

The other day I got a warning that I was running out of disk space and that I should delete some files off my computer. I was going to do that, but I didn't for some reason and then shut down the computer. Now when I try to start up the computer it will start booting up--but then it gets to, "Waiting for local disks" and won't go past that. Will a 512mb internal memory card solve the problem?

Ridders3425's tip on holding the mouse button down on startup should work fine. You should be aware that when burning a disc, you really need at least as much free space on the hard drive as the size of the disc being burned; e.g., about 640MB for CD-R, 4.7 GB for DVD-R. Allowing a few hundred MB for the system swap files, and you get the rule of thumb to keep 1 to 5 GB free space on the hard drive. That's to allow for creation of the temporary scratch files that are creating durning the burning process. That puts you in a Catch-22 situation when you get the running of of drive space warning: you needd to delete some files to gain space, but you can't really back anything up safely without free space to start with.
Do you have access to another Mac? You could then use a Firewire cable to connect the two and try to boot your eMac as the target disk; refer to How to use FireWire target disk mode. You can then use the other Mac to perform the backup of files and to remove enough unneeded filed from the eMac to permit it to boot.

  • Waiting for local disks???  problems with fans and starting up

Hello and please help me. My late 03 Mac isn't loading up. It gets past the grey bit and onto the loading part where everythings going fine until it stops on 'waitng for local disks' the fans then start to go nuts and I have to switch it off manually cos nothing is responding and I fear it may blow up. There's no disks in the drive and I've tried pressing the pmu button, disconnecting the wires and rebooting it from the original disk (when I do the latter it simply loads back up and stops at, yep you guessed it...waiting for local disks)
Any suggestions before I take it into an apple store?

Hi! Try restarting with the mouse button down to eject the disc. After you get the disc out if it still won't boot hold the option key down until the disk comes up and you can select the correct one to start from. All else fails boot from the install disc ("c" key down at startup with the disc inserted) and run the repair disk function of disk utility as per THIS. Tom

  • Windows 8 hangs or freezes whenever search for anything

    Rebuild the Index
Whenever you try to search for something in windows, its indexing which find the things quickly and brings that to you.If indexing is disabled or corrupt computer won't be able to search and will not present the search results.Windows uses the index to perform very fast searches on your computer.
The index requires almost no maintenance. However, if the index can't find a file that you know exists in an indexed location, you might need to rebuild the index. Rebuilding the index can take several hours, and searches might be incomplete until the index is fully rebuilt.
Go to Control panel and open Indexing Options.
Click the Advanced button at the bottom of the Indexing Options window. This displays a new window titled Advanced Options.
Click the Index Settings tab if it isn’t selected already.
Click the Rebuild button to delete and rebuild the file index.
    Click OK to confirm.
For more information on Advance indexing option you can read article on microsoft's website http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/change-advanced-indexing-options
Step 2 will always fix this issue but just in case its not helpful try the next Step 3.

    Hi,
Regarding current information we can't say that it related to this exe file.
We need to use Clean boot mode and Safe mode to test the results:
Please first restart the Windows in Clean boot and see if the issue still persists after reboot:
How to perform a clean boot
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the issue doesn’t appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic
    half services.
If the issue still persists in Clean boot mode, please test in Safe mode.
Let me know the results in Safe mode.
If we cannot identify this issue in Clean boot and safe mode, please help to collect the boot trace and let's see what cause this issue:

  • [SOLVED] Wiki page for GPT disks and booting arch using UEFI

Hi guys, I am new to archlinux. I installed archlinux x86_64 just yesterday and I like its customisability. I also like arch wiki. Nowhere else have I seen such extensive documentation, especially about things like HAL, UDEV etc. with proper instructions. Thanks to all archers.
I have installed Archlinux x86_64 in my Dell India Studio 1537 laptop along with Windows 7 Professional x64. Both the OSes boot in UEFI-GPT setup (my UEFI is tianocore.sourceforge.net EDK DUET UEFI64 firmware booting from USB). I boot Archlinux using my own compiled grub2-bzr compiled for both BIOS and UEFI-x64. I have a 1 MB BIOS Boot Partition as required by grub2 for BIOS-GPT booting. My Archlinux system can boot both from bios and from uefi, while Windows can boot only using UEFI.
The official Archlinux installation guide talks about only MBR (or msdos disklabel) partitions and booting from BIOS based systems. With 2TB drives becoming common place and UEFI being implemented (search for Phoenix SecureCore Tiano's 1 second POST operation), I think a proper wiki page describing differences between MBR and GPT, why GPT is better, how to setup arch to boot from GPT. Another page describing steps to setup arch to boot from UEFI (either as a separate page or as an extension of GRUB2 wiki page) is also needed.
Some details regarding Pure GPT (not a Hybrid GPT/MBR setup) and/or UEFI setups :-
    Partitioning tools -
GNU Parted for filesystem related tasks
    GPT fdisk tool - http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ ,  pacman -S gdisk (in extra repo) - for non-filesystem related tasks
util-linux-ng fdisk does not support GPT disks
Bootloader - GRUB2 - vanilla grub-legacy does not support GPT and does not support UEFI (Fedora's patched grub-legacy does support both GPT and UEFI) and syslinux does not support GPT (I may be wrong here - seems a gptmbr of syslinux does help in booting from gpt but not sure).
For GRUB2 - Need BIOS Boot Partition to embed GRUB2's core.img in GPT disks - size about 1 MB max - no filesystem
In GPT fdisk partition type code - EF02
In GNU Parted or GParted - bios_grub flag on
For UEFI-GPT booting this special partition is not needed as no embedding takes place. This is needed only in case of BIOS-GPT booting.
Incase of custom kernel configuration - enable CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION for GPT support
CONFIG_EFI for UEFI support (for UEFI even above option required)
CONFIG_EFI_VARS for UEFI Runtime Variables support (optional)
Note: Although GPT is part of UEFI specification, a UEFI system is not needed to boot from/use GPT. BIOS based GPT booting is possible with GRUB2 or Fedora's patched grub-legacy (but not vanilla grub-legacy provided by archlinux). It is also possible to boot Linux in UEFI-MBR setup (again using grub2) but I have not tried it.
Even without UEFI and less than 2TB harddrives, GPT based partitioning has many advantages - secondary GPT header and Partition table, CRC32 checksums. Unique Disk GUID and Filesystem-independent Unique Partition GUIDs, multiple primary partitions (default is 128 partitions, but it can be changed). The only problamatic OS is Windows which does not allow GPT booing unless one has UEFI based system. It allows only UEFI-GPT or BIOS-MBR setups. In linux it just depends on how the bootloader is configured - not a problem with grub2.
I also propose that incase of Auto-prepare Hard Drive, the installer default to GPT for "archlinux only" installs ( ie no dual-boot or triple-boot etc.).
I did not use the official archlinux iso but used archboot 2010.04 R3 as it gave an option of installing to GPT and also provided GRUB2 during bootloader install. I have never edited any wiki page before, thats why I request some one else to start a wiki page with the information given above.
I don't know whether this is the right place, but any Windows (Vista or 7 x64 versions) and Linux dual-boot user who has UEFI-based system with GPT partitioning and wants to get rid of Hybrid MBR setup (to boot Windows) can follow this post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofive … hp/t186440 (outside this forum) - this link describes the way to make Windows boot natively in UEFI-GPT setup. After doing this one can install arch using GRUB2 compiled for UEFI x86_64, and Windows will also see

Welcome to arch, skodabenz! Offering documentation on third post - all thumbs up
You could start the wiki page in your user-space with what you have, and then invite others to join working on it. Just register a wiki account, navigate to the page you want to start, for example:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:skodabenz/GPT
and click on "edit this page".
As noted in the other thread, arch's legacy grub is patched for gpt support. I don't know about UEFI, but you can always open a bug report asking for the patches from fedora to be included.
edit: the page from Rod Smith is a great resource. I was absolutely terrified at first by all this screwed up GPT/MBR stuff when I tried triple-booting Arch, Win and OS x, but he really does a great job explaining what it is all about.

  • Search for localized ResourceBundle

I have an applet that employs some properties files.
All the classes and all the properties files are bundled into a single jar file.
    The jar file is indexed.
Nevertheless, when I call ResouceBundle.getBundle("some.package.foo"), it proceeds to make a number of calls back to the web server, looking for localized resources ...
    some/package/foo.class
    some/package/foo_en.class
    some/package/foo_en.properties
    some/package/foo_en_US.class
    some/package/foo_en_US.properties
This sure seems like a bug to me ... the fact that I have created a jar index should have prevented this from happening.
Q: Is there anything that I can do to prevent these round-trips back to the web server?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Given that it is using a class loader that seems
really unlikely.I agree that it seems unlikely. Nevertheless, that is the behavior that I am observing.
I wrote a small test program to demonstrate this. Wrapped it up in a .jar file with an index and a manifest that says that it is sealed.

  • MacBook Pro and the search for a disk driver

i would like to know if the MacBook Pro has a disk driver for a CD built into the computer? if yes then where is it located, if no then can i buy a external disk driver

    hnickels14,
Retina MacBook Pros don’t have built-in SuperDrives. OS X comes with drivers for Apple SuperDrives, both internal and external. (I don’t know where those drivers are located in the filesystem.) Third-party external CD-ROM drives might require their own drivers for OS X, in which case they should come with the drive; if they work without requiring an additional driver, then they should be plug-and-play under OS X.

  • How do I set the Startup Disk to Boot Camp via ARD

    All,
I typically use ARD and Set Startup Disk to image and reconfigure our lab computers (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2789) via a network image, namely DeployStudio.  This works well.  Now I want to be able to set it to a local disk to boot into Windows 7 which we have setup with Boot Camp.  I get nothing but Failed responses.  I am hoping it is a matter of what name or format I need to use.
    I have tried:
    BOOTCAMP
    Windows
    Windows on BOOTCAMP
    None of these work.  HELP!
These are iMac 21.5's running 10.6.8.  ARD is 3.5.1.  Same for clients.

have you considered using Send Unix Command to set boot Volume?
For instance if you have "Macintosh HD" and "Boot Camp". And you wanted to set the boot volume to "Boot Camp". You could try sending the unix command, as root:
    bless -mount /Volumes/Boot\ Camp -setBoot
After setting this, if you reboot, the computer should boot to the Boot\ Camp volume. But One the computer boots to windows, getting them to boot back to the mac os x is going to be a whole other story.
FYI if your boot camp volume is labeled "Untitled" then you would send the unix command, as root, bless -mount /Volumes/Untitled -setBoot.

    Hello!

I have configured asmlib on a RAC system (multipath configured) and everything worked as a charm before booting node 2 in the cluster. Problem is that after reboot of node 2 i cannot see my asm disks anymore on that node. This only happens on node 2. I dont have this issue after rebooting node 1. However, if i do a manually "scandisks" on node 2 it sees the disks again and the cluster starts successfully..
I cannot see any difference between the two nodes.. the asmlib rpm's matches the kernel version.

  • Unable to discover local disks in T5220

    According to http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35332/html/vmusg-storage-types.html#vmusg-storage-local
I should be able to use extra disks in a T5220 to store VMs:
Local storage consists of hard disks installed locally in your Oracle VM Server. In a default installation, Oracle VM Server will only use the first disk (/dev/sda), leaving other disks available for storage.
As long as no partition and data are present the device will be detected as a raw disk. The choice is yours to use the local disks either to provision logical storage volumes as disks for virtual machines or to install a storage repository. If you place a storage repository on the local disk, an OCFS2 file system is installed.
But I am unable to discover these disks using Oracle VM Manager 3.2.2.520, managing a host running Solaris 11.1 with latest version of VM Server for SPARC:
    # pkg list | grep ldom
    consolidation/ldoms/ldoms-incorporation     0.5.11-0.175.1.9.0.4.0   i--
    system/ldoms    0.5.11-0.175.1.9.0.2.2    i--
    system/ldoms/ldomsmanager    3.0.0.4-0.175.1.9.0.4.0    i--
I suspect that it is because "partition and data are present" on the disk, but I don't know how to delete partitions with the format command, only change them to unassigned and zero length, and that didn't work:
    partition> p
    Current partition table (original):
Total disk cylinders available: 46873 + 2 (reserved cylinders)
Part      Tag    Flag     Cylinders         Size            Blocks

The reason you can't do this, is that the currently shipping support for Oracle VM Manager on SPARC systems is only for NFS.  The paragraph you are quoting is from the base Oracle VM manual and that section applies to x86.  /dev/sda is a Linux convention, not Solaris, so it wouldn't apply here.
If you go to the Oracle VM Server for SPARC documentation at Oracle VM for SPARC Documentation  and then select View Library for Release 3.0 at
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37707_01/index.html
you will see a page with all the documents for the current release. Pick the "Oracle VM Manager 3.2: Quick Start Guide for Managing Oracle VM Server for SPARC" at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/ovm3-sparc-quick-start-guide-1900072.pdf
You are running the correct version of Solaris 11 and the logical domains manager, so you should be able to discover the server, networks, and file-based repositories, but you'll have to wait till a later release provides support for local disk, FC SAN, and iSCSI.  I hope this helps explain the situation.
