  • Disk Utility hangs ("not responding") when attempting to Repair Disk on Time Capsule sparsebundle.  Help.

I am trying to improve the performance of my Time Machine backup and retrievals via my 2nd Gen. Time Capsule from my iMac Core 2 Duo hard drive with SL 10.6.8.  The incremental backups generally take 20 - 40 minutes each hour generally with fewer than 100 MB of data being backed up.  I have read through numerous threads on these forums about Time Capsule and Time Machine issues as well as the very helpful Pondini site (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html) and have tried many other suggestions (listed below), but have been unable to attempt a Disk Utility repair disk on the Time Capsule sparsebundle file.
After locating the sparsebundle 'file' in the finder under Shared/TC/Data, I am only sometimes able to drag the sparsebundle into the Disk Utility volumes and disk window.  About fifty percent of the time, Disk Utility hangs when attempting to drag in the sparsebundle.  If I am able to get it listed and click on "repair disk", then the beach ball begins to spin and nothing happens.  This occurs whether or not I first use AirPort Utility to "Disconnect All Users" from the Time Capsule.  I have given it over one hour to attempt the repair disk, but nothing happens, i.e., not a single message shows up in the detail window.  The beach ball just spins, and Disk Utility shows up in red as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.
Also note that on my new Macbook Air, Time Machine runs quite quickly via this same Time Capsule from my new Macbook Air using OS X Lion (which seems to indicate that the Time Capsule drive itself is OK).
I would appreciate any tips on getting Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my sparsebundle, as I seem to have exhausted most other options (see below) for improving Time Capsule performance -- aside of course, from wiping the Time Capsule clean and starting all over.... (which I really don't want to do, and from what I've read, has not helped some people who've tried this anyway).
    Many thanks!
Although I would like to focus this thread on the Disk Utility / sparsebundle "Repair Disk" problem, I should mention that I have tried the following other things:
    1.  Repaired disk permissions on my hard drive
    2.  Used Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my hard drive after starting up from a SuperDuper external backup
    3.  Run DiskWarrior on my hard drive, again, from a separate startup disk
    4.  Did the "full reset of Time Machine", a la Pondini Troubleshooting #A4
    5.  Changed my computer and Time Capsule names to simple short names with only alphanumeric characters and no spaces
    6.  Ensured that my Time Capsule is being accessed only via ethernet
    7.  Relaunched the finder
    8.  And finally, attempting to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle - thus the nature of this post

OK, no takers out there, but I answered my own question (sort of).
The answer is that even though Disk Utility shows up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu and appears to hang, it is actually still working.  A bit of patience shows that after about an hour, my Disk Utility was able to show the 1.44 TB Time Machine sparsebundle from Time Capsule in the disk window on the left hand side.  Once this appeared, I was able to click on "Repair Disk" (note that prior to doing this, I had to "Disconnect All Users" from my Time Capsule using the Airport Utility program; otherwise you will get a "could not unmount disk" error).  Again, the Repair Disk function appeared to hang Disk Utility as it showed up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.  However, after about 8 hours, Disk Utility did run the entire Repair Disk protocol on the sparsebundle.  The results DO NOT show up in the Disk Utility details window - so even if you are patient enough to let it complete, you will not see anything and may think that nothing happened.  However, you can find the familiar results of the Repair Disk function by looking on Console - find the "DiskUtility.log" under Files: ˜/Library/Logs.
Unfortunately, I was hoping to find a problem that would have been subsequently repaired which would result in dramatically increased Time Capsule speed, but this was not the case.  Disk Utility showed everything to be "OK" and I am stuck with a very slow Time Capsule....
(And of note, my new Macbook Air (OS Lion) Time Machine functions blazingly fast on both backup and retrieval to and from the very same Time Capsule - even though, these are occuring wirelessly via AirPort -- granted the size of this sparsebundle is an order of magnitude smaller at this point, i.e., only 10 GB right now)
Would still be happy to hear of any similar experiences or tips on getting Time Capsule to work more quickly.

  • Oddity when attempting to repair disk permissions...

I upgraded to Leopard recently and have been encountering some bizarre issues as of late. For one, it doesn't start up anywhere near as fast as it did when I first installed Leopard. And as far as the reason I'm posting this right now, all the Disk Utility processes seem to take a really long time, longer than usual. I'm running 10.5.2.
Per example, I verify my disk permissions, and it sits for at least 3-5 minutes with the progress bar locked at about 1/8th complete and the time remaining is indicated as less than one minute. Then it moves forward and completes the process in anywhere between another 3-5 minutes. The same occurs when I repair disk permissions or even verify the disk entirely.
Also, I'm getting the following log message. It's particularly weird because the exact same message shows up in the log after verifying and then repairing disk permissions, as if the repair process isn't actually repairing anything.
*Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw-------, they are -rw-r-----.*
*ACL found but not expected on "Library".*
Again, this log message is displayed after completing each process. Quite odd... any thoughts? Please advise! Thanks in advance.

In a nutshell, repairing permissions w/Leopard takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes, depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/Receipts/bom/. The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard. The stalled progress bar is an unresolved bug (they haven't figured out how to make it work whilst it's checking or rebuilding the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/. To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window, select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that are being read and checked against the current a.receiptdb file. That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar. Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the permissions are being checked and repaired. Also note, that you won't get any *they were repaired message* back for any that are noted to be incorrect.

  • HT1692 iOS7 Calendar freezing when attempting to accept/decline/maybe a meeting request from Microsoft Outlook Exchange... (iPhone 5s)

My iOS7 calendar on my iPhone 5s continually freezes when I attempt to accept/decline/maybe (respond in general) to any invitations that come through to the device... The main ones I get (so the ones I am experiencing the issue with) are from Microsoft Outlook Exchange Account (also synced through Mail app).
I have attempted to go via the emails I receive with the invitation and the device freezes when attempting to action the request through the Mail app also.
I'm hard reset the phone, I've removed and re-established the account in the phone, but nothing fixes the issue. It might work for one or two invitations, but it will start freezing again without a pattern...
This is a real pain, because these meeting requests etc are for work meetings and interviews!
    Thanks guys!

We are seeing a similuar issue here at work on serveral devices.

    Running iOS 7
When an email comes in for a meeting invite if you click on the Date and Time in blue it will walk you through opening the invite in your calendar and then I can Accept/Decline without issue.  If you click on the Invitation icon, which seems to be what users intuitively, in the the email then it freezes up the mail app., see image below.

  • Disk utility errored out when attempting to repair Macintosh HD

My iMac suddenly got really slow this morning, occasionally freezing for a few minutes. I ran disk utility to repair permissions, MacJanitor and then restarted to no avail. Then I started up using the original install CD (10.4.4), ran the hardware test and passed, and attempted to repair the disk with Disk Utility. I got through the first steps, but then when checking the Catalog File, I got the following error:
    Invalid Node Structure
    Volume Check Failed
Error: Underlying task reported failure on exit.
Before I exited, I repaired disk permissions again, and this time it found a bunch of bad permissions...when I restarted, system was still slow, so I know I still have a problem
Any suggestions on what to do next?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Try that disk repair a few more times, you never know!
But more then likely it won't be able to repair an Invalid Node Structure. That's a pretty serious error.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Cheers! DALE

  • IDVD freezes when attempting to make a disk image

I created an iMovie, edited it and added music. I clicked Create DVD within iMovie and created my .dvdproj. I then attempted to create a Disk Image in iDVD and the application just keeps freezing during the Process Movies stage. What would be causing this??? This is becoming increasingly frustrating.
I have 37G of space available on my iBook and 92G of space on my external hard drive. I attempted the last disk image from the external hard drive. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

I don't recall if I formatted the Lacie exteranl hard drive when I purchased it, and I now have files/photos, etc saved to it.
problem is, formatting a drive means erasing all content... using Disk Utitily, choose connected drive - you can read in the lower third, how it is formatted.. if FAT32, you have to save the data "somewhere else" (me wiseguy..burn some data DVDs..), and then format to hfs/MacOsExtended, most ext.hd are out-of-the-box formatted for PC, as said, that works with a Mac, but not with video files....
Yes, some of the music was purchased through iTunes.
    AHA!!
    … there's a time consuming, legal workaround:
do you know, how to create audioCDs with iTunes? link to Apple doc
make a playlist of your purchased tunes, burn an audioCD..
then, sorry to say that, re-import from that audioCD back to iTunes/or drag'n drop files directly into your iM project's timeline...
this process is needed, to get rid of the copyprotection which is installed inside the aacs you bought from iTMS... that workaround is legal and Apple recommended (lost that link to some Apple doc...anyone?)
... I've read here many people experiencing that "frozen" iDVD because of usage of iTMS music, I don't know why Apple has not implemented some "warning message" in iDVD/iM, telling the average user that issue ("you try to use copy protected music - please follow advise... - something like that..
    happy copying!
PS: 29Gb is fine... iDVD needs 10 - 15GB for some temp files (which are not shown in finder and will vanish after burning), and your Mac needs some 5Gb to be a happy Mac...

  • System freezes when attempting to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion

I hope someone can help me out there.  I have downloaded the Lion upgrade install program and built an install disk on my jump drive using Lion Diskmaker 2.0.2, but when I tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion using the jump drive, the install freezes at 24% and I cannot reboot or anything.  It just keeps coming back to the install screen.  Any suggestions?

This could be due to a number of causes. If you have the Lion installer application, then I suggest you put it in your Downloads folder. Now do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
When you've done the above you should now double-click on the Lion installer application in your Applications folder. When prompted click on the Install button. Note that you will not use the flash drive you made as you shouldn't need it. And, this will avoid any issues with a bad flash drive installer.

  • BI 4.0 Launch Pad will Freeze When Attempting to Schedule a Report

I recently set up BI 4.0 Edge series onto my server running MicroSoft server 2008 R2.  The install completed without error so I began implementing 'Best Practice' Crystal Reports.  When attempting to schedule these reports within the BI 4.0 launch pad I ran into an issue.
After clicking 'Schedule' the IE browser freezes with the schedule options available to be seen but not interact with and the loading pinwheel frozen in the center of the screen.
I am running IE9 but I have run both IE8 and IE9 on other systems without fail so I don't think that's the issue.  I've also tried resizing the APS to allow more RAM to the platform processes as well as split the services into separate servers all without success.
The browser also freezes when I attempt to click the 'Preferences' button on the launch pad home page, but I can open the Web Intelligence Application with no problems.
This is a particularly frustrating issue since I can navigate within the CMC with excellent response time from the system.  The rest of the launch pad is as reponsive as the CMC.  I can navigate in and out of folders fine, but when I try any command by right-clicking on a report
If anyone has any suggestions on what could be causing the browser to freeze during these transactions I would greatly appreciate it.  Iu2019ve tried to run a Repair on the Edge series application and I would like to avoid a complete re-install.

Only IE8 is supported,  how about another browser like Firefox on same machine. No need to re-install, you can try to undeploy -> redeploy the web app using WDeploy but it seems to be machine specific.

  • IDVD freezes when attempting to reconnect files

I have moved all of the files from my iDVD project onto a new hard drive. When attempting to reconnect audio/video files in "Project Info" it freezes every time without ever connecting the files. Photo files connect fine. I've even moved the project back onto the original hard drive with no luck.
This is a complex iDVD project with chapters, so it would never be the same if I have to redo it- I need to make exact duplicates.
I cannot reinstall as I no longer have disks.
    Thanks!

Do you have a burned disk copy of the DVD project?  If so just make a disk image of it with Disk Utility and burn the addtional copies from the disk image.
    Otherwise give this a try:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
    User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

After downloading the new version of Itunes onto my windows 8, my computer freezes when i attempt access into itunes store.  How can I fix this problem?

Never heard of that being caused by installing iTunes. Try asking on a Windows forum. This isn't a problem with iTunes or any other Apple product. If you believe it is, uninstall iTunes. If the problem persists, you'll have to seek advice on a Windows forum or contact Microsoft for support.

  • Logic freezes when attempting to bounce.

Logic is freezing when I attempt to bounce one of my projects, a music sequence using VSL sampled instruments. It doesn't even give me the bounce options window, but starts "thinking" (pinwheel, big CPU spike) as soon as I select "Bounce" from the menu, and remains unresponsive until I force quit.
It seems possible that this one project was somehow corrupted, but everything except the "Bounce" feature still works fine, which is rather bizarre.
It also seems possible that this is a result of the 8.0.2 update (since I had bounced this project with no trouble before the update), but of course all my other projects are fine as far as I know...
    Ideas?
    --Conor

I'm having that same issue today in a large piece (first half of an opera) using vienna ensemble.
I've already rebuilt the entire piece once, due to problems transferring the piece from logic 7 to logic 8. The thought of another rebuild.....
Bought a new 8 core machine to do this piece, now using logic 8.0.2 with os 10.5.2.
I've been a logic / notator user for the past 20 years. I used to love using logic-- great program -relatively bug free. But logic 8 is so full of problems it makes you crazy. If there was a serious altenative I'd be looking at it....

  • Computer freezing so did a repair disk permission once I reopened

last line of what was repaired
'warning:SUID file"system/library/coreservices/remotemanagement/ARDagent.app/contents/MacOS/A RDagent" has been modified and will not be repaired.  What does this mean and should I be concerned?

OK. An abnormal shutdown can potentially damage a drive's data. So, let's do this:
Hopefully, the drive is OK. You may even find you can now boot the computer. However, if you cannot then system files were likely damaged. You would need to reinstall Snow Leopard. See the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Now, to move on to your new external drive. I believe the drive needs formatting so do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Lightroom freezes when attempting to edit in Photoshop Elements 13.1

    Good day,
I've noticed that Lightroom 5.7.1 hangs when attempting to edit in Photoshop Elements 13.1.  It will sit there saying processing and make no progress no matter how much time its given.  I've noticed that I can get it to work if I change the file format from TIFF to JPEG.  Is this a known issue with a fix/work around?
The next thing that I've come across, is that when editing in Photoshop Elements 13.1 through Lightroom, the changes made are not saved to the file (yes I'm clicking save).  To get the changes made in Elements to save, I have to go back to Lightroom open the copy that was made for the export into Elements and select "Edit in Elements".  If I make all the edits again and save, it will then update the file in Lightroom.  It doesn't appear initially that Lightroom lets Elements change the file.
    And ideas?
    Carl

It has always allowed me in the past to send an image i am working on in LR to PS (I would choose to edit the original) the when saved down in PS it would then update the version in LR with the LR effects added as well. Suddenly it no longer gives me the option to 'edit the original '. I have always worked in RAW
