Freezes when rebuilding library

My iphoto library is a little over 50 gbs. Its been crashing upon loading recently and its instructed me to hold command+option while I open iphoto and then go to the bottom option to rebuild the library. It loads, then after some time, my computer freezes. I've let it run overnight thinking it was just slow but nothing. I've even let it run for two days.

what version of iPhoto (there are several versions of iPhoto '11)? Of the OS?
download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use its rebuild command - this creates a totally seperate new library leaving the existing one for future use

  • Creative Zen Micro - Freezes when 'Rebuilding Library', does this spontaneous

I'll make this post short and sweet.
Yes, I have read the FAQ.
I'm just wondering, its happened to me twice now that when i turn on my zen micro, it goes straight to the rebuilding library screen, and when the bar gets to the end it just freezes. Replacing the battery does not help. Only until i attach it to my computer at home does the library finish rebuilding. And no, on both occasions the battery was not dead. I just found out now about recovery mode and disk cleanup.
Now, considering this disk cleanup fixes the problem next time it arrises, why is this problem happening in the first place? How can I avoid it from happening?
I'll probably be returning this product if I'm forced to replace the battery etc each time i want to use it.
    Sorry for my broken english

I have had a very similar problem with my 5GB Zen Micro. I have not added music to the player in weeks but during a cold boot a couple of times a week the player will not start clean, many times hanging at the end of a library rebuild.
The player is always shutdown orderly, though most of the time it's via the 4 hour firmware shutdown included in the ..0 firmware. Each time it hangs I boot to rescue mode, run a clean-up, then reboot. During the reboot it always runs a successful rebuild, so I wonder, why didn't it do that last time and why does it keep acting up when nothing has been added or deleted to the player?
One additional note, sometimes during the boot it will hang with the ZEN screen only partially displayed.
I just deleted the firmware and reloaded ..0. Hopefully this fixes it, but stay tuned for updates...
    Thanks,Doug

  • IPhoto 9.6 hangs when rebuilding library

    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009), 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB.
    OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.
    iPhoto 9.6
Library size - 65.83 GB  on an external hard drive.
    Problem:
I opened iPhoto for the first time since upgrading to Yositmite and it said that I needed to upgrade my library.  I clicked to this and when it was done I had nothing.  No photos, events, albums, etc.  I have been researching my problem.  I have done loaded iPhoto Library Manager and I can see 97,090 photos.  I have tried to rebuild my library from iPhoto and iPhoto Libarary Manager.  Everytime I do this, it shows the 97, 090 photos as it is importing them.  This takes several hours.  After the last photo is shown on the import, it says that it is Finishing import.  At this point it I get the spinning icons and it stays there and never completes.  I have let this process run for 24 hours and it does not finish.  If I try to exit iPhoto, it says that it is still importing and I need to wait until it finishes.  When I go to the Force Quit menu, it shows iPhoto as still running.  It does not say that it has stop responding.  I have forced quit it and restarted the process, but it always gets to the point of finishing the import and never finishes.  Do I need to let it run for several days to resolve itself?  I have tried rebuilding through iPhoto Library Mananger and it does the same thing.  What should I try next?  I do not have a backup of this file.  I do not get any error messages during this process.  Thanks for any help or suggestions.

    I'm back!
There have been cases of other EHDs that didn't show the Ignore option.  I don't remember the whys.
Was there any Seagate software that came with the drive that you installed?  How much free space on the EHD?
If the budget permits it certainly wouldn't hurt to get another EHD and use it.  The Seagate could be reformatted with Disk Utility and used as a Time Machine backup drive or, if you already have TM enabled, as a clone of your boot drive as a second backup.
If you do decide to get another EHD take a look at the OWC Mercury Elite Pro  drives.  OWC has an excellent reputation for quality hardware and excellent customer support.  I'm currently using 6 of them.

  • ITunes freezes when loading library

Every time I try to load my library I tunes freezes. I have even tried loading I'm small batches but still the same! Are Apple investigating the problem or just doing nothing till the Press get wise to it?

Are Apple investigating the problem or just doing nothing till the Press get wise to it?
Is an Apple team of technology experts investigating that you BobRi can not load your library?  Did you tell them and give them time to mobilize the vans and helicopters?  Given that millions of people are loading their libraries with no problems at all I sincerely doubt this is an Apple cover-up that you alone have discovered.  Probably your library file is corrupt.  I don't know how you can load "small batches" unless you are cutting up your .xml file and trying to rebuild your library from pieces (not at all easy).  With loading the main library file it's either all or none.
Conspiracy theory aside, have you tried putting your current library.itl file in a safe place, grabbed your backup file from your backup drive to replace it, and tried starting using it?

  • InDesign freezes when a library item is dragged into a new document

I'm using InDesign CS5.5 and I save individal articles as library items and then drag them into a larger document. This works fine, unless the library item includes images and then the program is very slow (almost frozen) until I exit and go back in again. Does anyone know how to fix this or work around it?

    Hello,
You need to use "Update List Item" action to update any item in list/library. Refer this link for sample:

    Hope it could help

  • IPhoto rebuilding library freezes

Two days ago I was sending images from iPhoto over Messages. I sent about 50 images fine in groups of ten. When sending the last four (or five?) images the images stayed on the top of all other applications. I quit iPhoto and the images stayed visible. I shutdown all applications (quit, not force quit) and rebooted my MBP. When I started iPhoto again all my images were gone. I shutdown iPhoto and tried the option+command key sequence when starting iPhoto. The first two options, "repair permissions" and "rebuild thumbnails", did nothing. The third option, repair database, returned my images but lost all my "faces". When I choose "rebuild database" my MBP freezes when iPhoto reaches the "restoring faces" step.
A few weeks ago I had a freezing problem that eventually turned out to be some software (Sierra Wireless) while "cleaning up" my MBP. I haven't removed any software recently. This freezing seems to be isolated to iPhoto.
    - I have moved "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist" and "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist.lockfile" out of the way.
    - I have deleted/uninstalled iPhoto from Applications and reinstalled from the AppStore.
    - I have downloaded "iPhoto Library Manager", but have not tried it yet.
    What to try next?
    Mike

    - Photos was unchecked in iCloud preferences
    - moved iLifeAsset Management out of the way
    - booted
    - started iPhoto with option+control, selected "rebuild library" (fourth option)
    - iPhoto hung again when "restoring faces"

  • ITunes 11.0.2.26 freezes when adding folder to library

iTunes 11.0.2.26 freezes when adding folder to library. This did not occur with any previous version and is taking place with several different folders. Adding files as a batch wrks fine.

  • ITunes 10.3.1 freezing when adding new tracks (library located on external HD)

Installed the new iTunes 10.3 beta earlier and tried to add new songs into my library. However, it takes approx 30 mins to add 4 songs and sometimes it simply won't even add and just freezes. I tried updating to 10.3.1 and the problem persists. I haven't seen anyone post this problem, the closest I have found are others' iTunes freezing when syncing with iOS devices. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but my library is located on an external HD and the option to "Copy to iTunes library" is ticked. However, I doubt that's the main problem since if I actually wait it out and add only 1,2 songs at a time it still works, although it just takes a random amount of time to add (5+ minutes per song).
I'm hoping someone has a solution or can identify this as a bug? I've been considering downgrading to iTunes 10.2.2 so I can actually add songs to my library (but can't seem to find a link anywhere to 10.2.2). If someone could provide a link to 10.2.2, it would be incredibly helpful as well. Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
finally worked! I found this post and it has finally worked I understand it is the same as WHATHECK's answer so thanks WHATHECK!
You have to be certain that you have backed up your Library's and Playlists and that you are doing the one in the root (if like me you use a HD any old library/playlists instead of deleting them put them some were safe just incase and make sure you are re-creating the library from your root folder i.e user/music/itunes
    Anyone trying thishttps://discussions.apple.com/message/15093132#15093132
    Good luck!
Seriously thinking of not updating itunes next time...

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7)  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

can't open iphoto in airbook. Asking to upgrade then says must rebuild library then warning about missing files. When click rebuild all I get is continued- waiting for iphoto library- and, never rebuilds

-1.The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
    2. iPhoto is unable to open this library.
The library has issues that require rebuilding to correct
    3. Warning
Would you like to rebuild the library "iPhoto Library"?
The library "iPhoto Library" is missing required database files and must be rebuilt before it can be opened.
    4. Waiting for iPhoto library
iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available
Time Machine might be backing it up

  • Program keeps freezing when trying to change library or restore ipod.

Having problems since updating like everyone else! Was missing files, etc.
I am trying to change the library location in preferences, but the program locks up when it is opening the window. Also freezing when I try to add a folder to the library.
I tried to restore my ipod on the summary page and same problem, opening window and it freezes. I have now reformatted my ipod and am trying to start fresh. Even reinstalled software, but no luck.
    Help!

Me too .. very frustrating, spent the last 3 hrs looking for solutions.
Also noticed Apple has suspended downloads of itunes 6 for the time being ... wondering if its a related bug.

  • Why does screen freezes when I attempt to play certain songs in my library

Why does my screen Freeze when I attempt to play certain songs I have downloaded from CDs into my library?
I have just received my Nano and I'm unsure if I want this to keep happening

Apple removed my previous post because I referenced jailbreaking which is a violation of the TOS.  Sorry about that!
That said, I can't think of any way to get around the file size limitation.  I suppose itunes match isn't really meant to give you access to play all your songs anywhere.  It instead gives you the opportunity to download your songs via wifi when you aren't at home.  I can't see that it makes any difference one way or the other to Apple but it obvioiusly would make a difference to the wireless provider.
So now, my question is whether this happens on with all carriers.  I have experienced this on AT&T.  Does anyone here have Verizon or Sprint?

  • IBooks won't rebuild library when dialog box requires that I rebuild

When I open iBooks in OSX 10.9 Mavericks, a dialog box appears saying my library could not be located.  It gives the option to 1) Quit, 2) Try Again, and 3) Rebuild Library.
    Selecting Quit quits iBooks
Selecting Try Again immediately pops up the same dialog box
Selecting Rebuild quits iBooks.  There is no crash log that appears (otherwise I would have posted it here)...it just quits.
I am able to see my iBooks library files buried in my HD in the correct location.

The page you linked to refers to Windows malware. It can't affect a Mac, unless it's running Windows.

The hard drive on my MacBookPro recently crashed.  The Apple store replaced it.  Since then I can't open iphoto.  It asks to rebuild library; when I click yes, I get: "Aperture cannot access this library; reset permissions." I don't own Aperture!  Any thoughts on how I can rebuild the iphoto library?  Currently I can't even get into it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
