Freezes when waking up with Firewire drive connected??

When you put your mac to sleep are you supposed to unmount your external drives(firewire)? is this different for firewire vs. usb?
I have a Dual 2GHz G5 and an Iomega "black" 250Gig external hard drive connected through firewire and many times (not always) when i put the computer to sleep or it goes to sleep by itself when it wakes up the computer freezes (spinning ball) but un-freezes if i pull the firewire cable.
what am i doing wrong?

There could be a problem with the FW drive's firmware. Older, non-standards-complying versions have been known to do stuff like this, especially with newer Macs that are more stringent in what they tolerate. Check with the manufacturer for updates.

  • Imac running 10.8.2 often does not start up with firewire drives connected

I have a mid 2007 imac running osx 10.8.2 and it will nit restart with two firewire drives connected if it has been running for sometime. If i disconnecr and restart and then connect the drives and then restart again it will restart.

a brody's guess is a good one. Please also look at what Apple says in Gray screen appears during startup

  • Blue screen of death when La Cie external firewire drive connected

I tested a LaCie external firewire drive on my iMac and it worked fine. I packed it up well and posted it to a friend who gets the blue screen of death when the LaCie is connected to her iMac. She's not even trying to boot from it.
My iMac is 9.1  and hers is 8.1.  We are both running Snow Leopard.  Was there some problem once upon a time with chipsets or am I mis-remembering?
    TIA

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • Error -36 when reading/writing with firewire drives (400 & 800)

This is only happening when I connect the drives to my G5, but the drives work fine on my MacBook Pro. I first thought I had a problem with my drives, but then when they worked on my laptop I figured it must be a problem with my G5. One of the drives is a smartdisk firelite drive connected via firewire to the front of my G5, the other is a G-Drive connected via FW 800 in the back of my machine.
Any ideas of what I need to do on my G5 to fix this issue?
    Thanks!

    Hi-
The error is an I/O error. One possible cause is low power on the firewire bus, or, the drives require more power than is available. Placing a powered hub between the G5 and the drive may be the solution.

  • Mini won't start with firewire drives connected

    to all,
please ignore the specs below. the computer i am talking about is the 1.66 Intel Core Duo, 1 GB RAM OS X 10.4.7.
as per the title, the mini will not start up if there is a FW drive connected. my wifes amacom flip 2 disk, the Iomega drive specially deisgned for the mini, or my lacie pocket drive. the screen shows the apple but the cog does not appear. it immediately appears after the drives are removed or powered down.
is there a solution for this? or do we have to live with it? or am i alone in experiencing this? there are no other operating systems alive on any of the FW drives to start from.

Hold down Apple-V right after you hit the power button. That will put you in verbose mode, so you should be able to see whatever is keeping the kernel from loading.

  • Late 2007 MB Freezes when waking from Sleep after Lion Upgrade

I have a Late 2007 MacBook that I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion.  Since the upgrade, the computer occassionally freezes when waking up from Sleep (putting it to sleep by shutting the screen).  Sometimes, I will see about 1-2 seconds of activity (i.e. AIrPort icon searching for network), but then the screen will turn black and the computer will restart.  Other times, I actually get a kernel panic.
I never had this issue with Snow Leopard, and it seems to happen more often if I try to use the computer (i.e. move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard) immediately after I open the screen and while it's still waking up.  By being patient and giving the computer 5-10 seconds to wake up, it seems to only freeze about 1 out of every 7 times when waking up, but it's stil frustrating to not know whether or not I'm going to lose my work anytime I put the computer to sleep.
From other issues that I've researched, I've disabled Bluetooth completely (which reportedly fixed some similar issues), but I still had periodic freezes even with it disabled.
The only thing I can think of that might be contributing to a weird hardware issue is that the AirPort card died on me a few years ago, and I had to replace it with an AirPort Extreme from a Late 2007 15" MacBook Pro (I'm pretty sure the model of the card I put in is AR5BXB72, although I could open my computer back up to verify if that would be helpful).  Snow Leopard seemed to be perfectly fine with that card, and Lion is ok for the most part (WiFi works perfectly fine), but I'm wondering if I need to update/change any Kexts for that piece of hardware.
Here is one of the kernel panic reports from about 2 weeks ago:

  • 1.5 sometimes freezes when running statements with F9

I had noticed occasional freezes when hitting F9 with 1.5.0 production (ie three or four times last week), but after upgrading to 1.5.1 today (fresh install, migrated preferences) I have had four or five freezes when hitting F9. The UI completely freezes before showing the progress bar and there is no redraw, but it isn't using any CPU (and CPU is 95%+ idle), nothing appears on the console (started using <SQL Dev Install>\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.exe) and if I leave it long enough the memory usage drops from 150K+ to back between 1K to 4K (sometimes quickly, sometimes not).
I am on Win XP SP 2, using SQL Developer 1.5.1.54.40 with JDK 1.6.0_04.
Initially, I upgraded to 1.5.1 from 1.5.0 as a Check for Updates, but tried the clean install (including renaming preferences directory) after the first freeze.
Has anyone else seen this? Can someone from the SQL Dev team provide any help? Is there something else I can do to help narrow this down?
    theFurryOne

Same thing in very similar circumstances - query with bind variables previously executed, freezes on execute without showing bind variable window. Using no appreciable CPU in this state, but after a minute or so memory usage started to increase in 4 or 8K chunks.
I've also been seeing this intermittently in all builds of 1.5.

  • Firewire drives connect only rarely

I have two Firewire drives connected through a Belkin hub. Everything used to be hunky dory. Then one would no longer connect, now both will no longer connect. Once in a while, they'll both appear when I turn the computer on - they were both available all last week. Today I can't get either to appear.
Both drives always work fine on other computers. Using the hub or not makes no difference. Both drives work fine via USB. I have zapped the pram many times and reset the SMC per other recommendations, no luck.
Anything else I can try?????? Desperate!

I believe that there is a BIG problem with MBP and FW. Apple is not acknowledging a SERIOUS problem. I have not been able to get my FW drives to work properly and even invested in a FW express card. But still, my MBP is finicky.
    good luck

  • Why does my mac sometimes freeze when waking up?

Why does my mac sometimes freeze when waking up?  It only happens sometimes, but also happens spontaneously.  21' iMac 2011 model.  It just started recenlty after a new firmware update from apple.  Any advice or reasons why would be appreciated.

boot to lion recovery and run verify/repair on the hard drive. verify will say: appears to be okay OR needs to be repaired. No matter what outcome, you will repair anyways (as it will do some updating on the volume)
Process: hold command R during startup/ wait till you see mac os utility (might have to select english as the main language first) then disk utility/ select macintosh HD on the left, and then verify/repair on the right bottom side. Cheers!

  • 10g RAC on SLES 9 with Firewire drive

    Hello,
Is there documents/guides to setting up 10g RAC with firewire drive on SLES 9. Thank you.

    Mike:
Yes! I resolved the problem by applying the 9.2.0.3 patch. However, ocfs is not working properly. Sometime I got I/O problem or used one node to create tablespace but the other node can not see it right away. May be is because I use version 1.0 of ocfs.o. I am trying to find newer version of ocfs.o. If you know where to get it please let me know.

  • Freezing when waking from sleep with latest Lion release?

I have had both my IMac and MacBook Pro freeze upon waking from sleep recently. Occurred only after installing latest Lion upgrade. Very frustrating since requires hard reboot ronin case of the MacBook Pro, reinstalling the OS. I have noticed similar complaints by others. Any suggestions for a fix other than waiting for a new release?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    pmset -g
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered – the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Audio cutting out when using D2 external Firewire Drive

    Hi,
I have just upgraded to Logic Studio, using the following setup:
    Macbook Pro
    Motu 828
    AMT 8
    Logic Studio
    D2 Lacie 500GB Firewire Drive
As the MacBook's internal hard drive is not sufficient to record and playpack efficiently, I was advised to get an external Firewire Drive. Given that I have very little space on my laptop - (am running windows on a partition also) I am trying to save my logic files to the external HD. When creating tracks specifically using Audio Instruments, the playpack keeps cutting out.
I am connecting the HD via usb 2. I am also having to freeze the tracks in order to record more layers. There is lots of clipping and latency. I thought by using the external, this problem would be resolved.
The HD is not playing back the tracks fast enough, and keeps cutting the audio out. The audio cuts out everytime the blue light on the drive flashes.
I cannot save the files to the MackBook HD as there is notenough space.
Is there something very wrong with my setup?
any advice would be really appreciated.
ps. I am a bit of a newbie
    thank you in advance.
    Spy

Connect it via firewire 800. USB2 is not good for audio or video streaming.
I have 3 D2's connected to my mac pro, works like a charm.
    good luck.

  • Blue Screen Result When Installing To External Firewire Drive

I can't afford to have problems with programs not running on Leopard on my 17" G4 1.67 GHz 2 GB RAM PowerBook so I am trying to install it on an external Firewire drive. I was hoping to test out Leopard with certain applications by running it from the external drive.
The Firewire drive has two partitions, one has my backup clone of the PowerBook and the other just has files and about 35 GB of free space. The installation would be a new installation so none of the files that deal with login or Application Enhancer that are being talked about in other threads are an issue.
My first attempt to install brought up a blue screen after the installation restart. I left it there for about 30 minutes then powered off the PowerBook by holding down the power button. I started it again and held down the option key, picked the install disk as startup, went through the disk utility repair disk (found no problems). After that I picked the new install on the external from the startup preferences and it simply restarted to a blue screen. I left that one for about 20 minutes then powered down.
I went back to the Powerbook Tiger OS system, deleted all the installed folders on the external and tried a completely new install. Once again it went to the blue screen after the Leopard install restart. This time I left it overnight and this morning the display was dark and upon waking it up with a tap of the space bar was greeted by the bluescreen again.
I talked to my Apple hardware rep who knows the equipment that I am working with and we talked about all the steps I went through and he has no explanation why it won't work on the external.
I would love to hear from anyone that may have insight for this particular external FW drive installation perspective.

    Joe-
Is the drive partitioned to APM? (Sorry I took Anton's reply to be yours.) What was the type fo partitioning onthe disk with the success? I am not knowledgable enough in those error messages on the system.log file, but one thought is - after the memory upgrade, did you clear the PRAM (long shot, but do it anyway)? The machine booting on one external Firewire drive (#2) implies the problem is with the external FW disk (#1) you are using. Some other people had the bus error, but with Time Machine. (Not to go on a tangent, but TM seems to have problems when the disk name has non-alphanumeric in it.)
Hoping someone who knows the syslog errors and the boot sequence will pipe in here.

  • IMac Slow Boot/Start up with firewire disk connected

I have recently purchased a a WD FreeAgent 1Tb external disk, to use as a Time Machine drive.
Since connecting this drive, the boot time has increased from less than a minute to nearly 5 mins.
I presume my iMac is doing some kind of check of this drive, and because its 1TB it is taking an age. Is there anyway to get my computer to ignore this disk on start up?
Is this a problem with Leopard? IS it resolved in snow leopard.
I have read some posts that suggest unplugging the drive on each start up, is this really what i have to do?, as its a bit of a pain.

It is not a general problem with Leopard. I have a 750GB drive that is used for Time Machine (via USB 2.0), a FireWire external drive, up to three iPods (FireWire and USB), and sometimes a smaller emergency/maintenance startup external drive connected during startup, and the startup time is not noticeably affected based on what is or is not connected.
Can you explain which part of the startup sequence is being delayed. Is the screen still grey? Has the Apple logo appeared with the spinning wheel? Has the screen turned blue? Is it that last part, when the Desktop is being assembled on the screen?
    Have you reset PRAM?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Have you run Disk Utility and used +Repair Disk Permissions+ on your startup volume recently.
Since the issue seems to be related to this 1TB drive, have you run Disk Utility and used +Repair Disk+ on that drive, to check for disk directory or disk data corruption errors? Time Machine does some complex file management, so such errors are quite possible, and that may be the cause of the delay during startup.
