Freezing and dialogue box requesting restart
in the last month several times my screen freezes{always during the screen saver mode}. some of the time i was downloading a movie but it has happened when the screen saver goes into action approx. 5 minutes before the sleep mode.
then appears a translucent dialogue box in several languages telling me to press and hold the power button for restart.
seems to be connected to the screen saver mode, any suggestions?
thanx

The document at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25704 explains that this error results from a missing file (BaseSystem.pkg) is missing from your >library>receipts folder.
That document also suggests it may have been moved, so first off, try and search for it in the Finder's Edit menu 'Find' command. If you locate it elsewhere on the system, move it back to the library/receipts folder. If it's not found on your system, you can copy it from another Mac running a similar version of MacOS (it doesn't have to be exactly the same version). It's about 2Mb in size so it can even be emailed to you from someone who has a suitable copy.
Alternatively, as the document suggests, you can reinstall MacOS from your install disk. Use 'archive and install' to ensure you don't damage your data, and then bring the system back up to date, preferably by downloading the combo updater rather than System Updates.
You may be able to extract a copy of BaseSystem.pkg from your install disk using Pacifist by the way. I've not tried this, but it may be worth a try if you are otherwise facing a reinstall.

I have a MackBook Pro I updated to Maverick and now my internet won't open and all my programs freeze and I have to restart my computer. The only program that doesn't freeze is Microsoft Word.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well. -
MACBOOK FREEZES AND ASKS YOU TO RESTART
I HAVE HAD MY MACBOOK FOR LESS THAN A MONTH, AND SOMETIMES THE SCREEN FREEZES, AND A BOX JUST POPS OUT IN MY SCREEN WITH JAPANESE AND ENGLISH TEXT INDICATING THAT I SHOULD PRESS THE POWER BUTTON TO RESTART MY MACBOOK.
DOES ANYBODY KNOWS WHY THIS HAPPENS?Hi aletin
Sounds like a Kernel Panic, which most likely is caused by a software problem.
Try booting the computer with the system DVD (press the "C" OR "option" key at startup) and use 'Disc Utility' to 'repair' the HD. If that doesn't work then try the "Apple Hardware Test" by again booting with the system DVD and press "option" when starting up. Also see:

As stated I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this? I need it for homework tonight.
Crowntheme,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still freeze after a few minutes? -
Why since installed Lion on my IMac it happened many times that my computer freeze and I have to restart everything before something work again?
To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

The software freezes and I have to restart the program again.
I have no problem with the software while I'm actively using it. But if I leave it for a couple of minutes it often freezes and I have to restart the software. This is a real problem as I often work with this software all day and have to restart it many many times during a day.
Hi Barbara,
Thank you for your answer. Win 8 and Elements Organizer 11.0.0.0 -
My phone keeps saying the storage is full so I deleted pictures, apps, and all my texts. Then after I do this my phone freezes and I have to restart it. When I restart my phone then everything I deleted comes back. What is going on?
HI Shelby,
It sounds like your available free space is not reporting properly. I would start by quitting the Settings app:
iOS: Force an app to close
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Computer freezes when dialogue box comes up
For example, when I went to Tools/Clear history, and dialogue box came up asking for time frame. I cannot x out, cancel, minimize or choose an option. I have to ctrl/alt/del. Happens for every dialogue box I get on internet as well.

Sending an email via AppleScript and Dialogue Boxes
I am trying to write a script to send an email via Mail of which the body of the message is from a dialogue box. I decided upon using Automator and AppleScript. I have, so far, the following workflow:
1. Run Apple Script:
set mypass to text returned of (display dialog "What are you doing?" with icon 1 buttons {"Tweet", "Cancel"} default button "Tweet" default answer "")
2. New Mail Message.
3. Send Outgoing Messages.
4. Run Apple Script:
on run {input, parameters}
tell application "System Events" to set visible of process "Mail" to false
return input
end run
I wand this workflow to allow the user to input an answer and this answer to be in the message field of the email. I can use the "Ask for Text" action in Automator but it does not allow for any control over the appearance of the dialogue box. The first script returns the result "<whatever is typed>" (ie. "Test") in the Results field below the script box, as does the "Ask for Text" action but it does not insert it into the message. Does anyone know what is going wrong here?
I am relatively new to AppleScript which is why I am using Automator but would like any information on how this could be done entirely in AppleScript. My previous attempts at sending email using script was unsuccessful.
My aim is to save this as an Application with a proper icon.see my reply to your post in the snow leopard forum.

MacBook Air freeze and need to be restarted when downloading with a web browser only!
Here is my configuration:
- Macbook air 2012, mountain lion.
Here are the symptoms that affect the computer:
- The computer freezes when I try to download a file through a web browser (tested with chrome and safari). I can download through the Appstore for instance.
So I have to turn it off by long pressing the off button.
Then when I restart it reboot without worries or it restarts again by freezing and by 3 beeps when the desktop appears.
- What I tried to do:
Checking permissions and disk and no problems detected.
Reinstall osx partition from the partition recovery hd, but I got an error when preparing the installation.
I wanted to mention that this problem started to appear when I downgraded parallels desktop 8 to 7 and running my boot camp with parallels 7 but with higher configurations!
and it crashed several times.
I also read that the number of beeps had a precise meaning.
Thank youI have checked my panic log and this is the text it contains, what does this mean as it means nothing to me?

Gray screen after screen freeze and finder+all programs restart.
Sometimes, (like 4 or 5 times a day) my screen freezer, i get a loading circle, a gray screen and then Finder and all my programs restart.
It's doing that since i updated to Osx lion.
Computers
- 21.5" iMac 2010
- 15" MacBook Pro 2006
Does anyone know what this is? And how do I solve this problem?
Because its shuts down everything im busy with (and doesn't save it).I found this to work at least to get in and backup some files. It is VERY important to put these commands in EXACTLY as seen here, including spaces.
Boot into Single-User mode (Command-S while booting up)
Execute the following commands:
/sbin/fsck -fy /
/sbin/mount -uw /
mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .
mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .
touch /System/Library/Extensions
exit
I guess these two graphics extensions go bad quite often on Macbook Pro 15-inch. They are part of the logic board. The only problem I had was I still couldn't get into my computer any other way, and the graphics for Safari were messed up. Firefox was okay. Good Luck!

MSI P67A-G43 (MS-7673) System Freezes and then will NOT Restart
Hello Everyone,
I was hoping someone out there might know what is going on with my system. My issue began about a week ago when my computer simply froze while in use. After realizing the system was not responding I hit the reset button and tried to restart, however the computer restarted to a black screen (NO words) and went no further. I turned off the power supply to force a shut down, turned it back on and then tried to restart again, only this time the computer went into a cycle where the lights flash, the fans run for 2-3 seconds, but the “all clear” beeps never sound and then everything turns off. The only way to stop the cycle is to cut the power. Because this cycle happened when I first built the computer (as a result of an improperly connected cable) I thought something inside the case might be lose, so I opened it up, removed everything and then put it back together.
This time when I started the system I got a screen that said “Previous overclocking has failed…” Now I have never tried to overclock my computer, nor do I know how, so I do not understand WHY my computer would give such a message. After this message however, the computer did actually restart and take me to windows, however the computer inevitably freezes again after use, sometimes after only a few seconds, sometimes after a few hours.
Furthermore, once I shut down the computer and try to restart it, it almost always goes into the cycle of trying to restart, but failing. When it does get past the ‘all clear’ beeps I get the failed overclocking message again. I did just discover a “super-charger.exe” MSI application that was trying to run every time I started the computer and I uninstalled the application, I’m not sure if that had something to do with the overclocking or not. I also took out 3 of the 4 memory sticks and I am running on just 1. For the moment (while I write this post) the computer is working but could very well freeze again at any time, though just now it did start up withOUT the overclocking message and went right to windows.
Thanks for taking the time to read through my problem. This issue has been going on for more then a week, ANY help would be VERY much appreciated! If it is fine with one stick RAM, add the second so that both blue slots are used. If ok, then remove the second stick & replace it with one of the other sticks. If ok, try the last stick. If any of the tests fail with any of the sticks in the second slot, you found the bad one.

My MBP keeps freezing and telling me to restart my computer!! HELP!!
I have had my macbook pro for only a few weeks and, while at first it worked wonderfully, it has started to act up! In the past three days it has frozen 3 times and forced me to restart it twice. I do not know what is going on! some one please help me! Is there anything that I can do manually to fix it or should i take into the apple store to get it checked out?
this is the most current "error details" from my last restart. can anyone translate?

If you must use Chrome, download either the very latest version or the newest builds of the beta version. There are problems with Chrome and your Intel 4000 GPU that have beenn documented here and all over the Internet. The very latest version is supposed to fix the problem. Also make sure that you have the latest Software Update, released yesterday, for your machine.
Then follow Bimmer's instructions. I'll bet that you're problems will be solved by updating Chrome, making sure that you have the latest software updates available, and following Bimmer's guides.
Good luck,

Lightroom freezing and forcing me to restart my Mac
Every time I use lightroom (I have tried many different catalogs, catalogs on different hard drives, etc.) and I keep getting the "death screen" where it turns gray like a curtain faling from top to bottom, and says i must restart my computer. I have a Mac Pro, quad-core, barely 3 years old (if even) and this just started recently. I have used the F1 key trick when restarting, I have re-installed LR several times, to no avail. Help!!!!
