Freezing and resetting IPod. Please Help.

I own a 40gb Click Wheel IPod w/ a black and white screen and have recently been having a few major problems with it.
1) The IPod will skip over songs that I select from the "Songs" menu or any other menu.
2) The IPod will also freeze for a lengthy period of time in between songs but not during songs.
3) The IPod will reset on its own with no user intervention.
4) The IPod Battery has a very short life span.
I have read over several help topics and discussions on this site such as the "5 R's", "IPod Updaters", "ITunes Updates", and several other various disscusions in the forum. What I have done so far is:
1) Reset and Restored the IPod numerous times. (I think about twelve to be exact)
2) Downloaded the latest versions of ITunes and IPod Updater and installed them numerous times.
3) Sent the IPod in for service. (which was returned with no supposed problem according to the technicians)
4) Even went as far as restoring my PC thinking that could have been causing the problem.
I am recieving NO SAD IPOD ICON and NO FOLDER ICON. I HAVE however seen the Apple Logo come up at random when the IPod resets itself. My IPod DOES connect to my PC. ITunes DOES recognize it and I have no problem with transfering music.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated but I do request that you do not reply with any of the topics I have already read. (i.e. " The 5 R's", "Software Updates", etc.)
Thank You
  Windows XP

For what it is worth, I'm having the same restting problem. A song will play for something less than 3 minutes and then the entire Ipod "reboots": it shuts down, the screen shows the apple icon, and then it loads up. This happens whether in a charging cradle or freestanding. Occassionally it will play 2 or 3 songs before going through the reboot sequence. It is not song specific; I have no issues with itunes on my computer and no issue with the same songs on my newer ipod. Any advice??

  • K8N Neo Platinum Freezes and Powers off - Please help

    Hi,
I wonder if someone can help.
Ok just to set the scene I am completely non technical so please excuss my ignorance.
About 3 years ago I purchased a PC with a K8N motherboard and it has been fine, no problems at all.
Lately it has started powering down randomly leaving the power light flashing only.
Sometimes it switches off within 5 seconds of pressing the power button other times 10 minutes.
I've had it open to check connections and it seems to work better with the sides off but eventually crashes. Obviously, it is dusty inside. I've cleaned it as much as the dyson will allow.
If its in operation the program (windows etc) freezes then the PC turns off - leaving flashing light.
Only removing the power resets it but now it's only ok.
I haven't got any idea where to start.
Read about Power Supplies this one is the original Taurus TX-450-PFC-C ???
    3.3v = 35A
    5 v = 40A
    12v = 18A
    -5v = 1A
    -12v = 1A

If anyone could offer some suggestions I would be eternally grateful.
    Cheers

yes as DOK said PSU failure or CPU overheat, check CPU Cooler system too, ensure CPU is not overheating. re-seat CPU, apply new thermal paste, ensure CPU FAN is spin at expected RPM, and CPU temp is in normal range.

Without knowing current status of the iPod:
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Hi there Rlong50,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Freezing and resetting solution, playlists the culprit, take a look Apple

Hi there, I've had a major issue with my 160gb ipod classic from day 1.
I've got a 140g music library on my PC and I've not been able to sync it to the ipod because of freezing and resetting problems.. until today.
When I first tried to sync my whole music library the ipod crashed as soon as I disconnected it. I had to restore the ipod and soon learned to sync my music in 10gb chunks. Only trouble was the ipod would work fine as long as I only synced 70-80gb of music, which is half the ipod's capacity. If I tried to add any more music the ipod would eventually go into the freezing and resetting loop and I'd have to restore it and start again.
I know other users on here have had similar problems. Firmware 1.1 and itunes 7.6 did not fix the issue for me. I know that my mp3 files are not the problem because if I split my music library into two 70gb chunks I could sync either chunk without problems, it was only when I tried to sync them all...
Through lots of trial and error, such as reinstalling OS, reinstalling itunes, rebuilding library, scanning mp3 files for errors I have eventually found out what was causing my problem.
I have 100s of pretty complex smart playlists, they are heavily nested and dependant on other playlists. I've got them all organised into folders for easier navigating. This was one of the reasons I couldn't wait for the ipod classic to come out because my playlist folders would at last be recognised on the ipod. I recently added a pretty big playlist tree for playing songs from a given year and noticed that itunes got even more sluggish than usual!
I looked at my library file and it had grown to nearly 100mb. As an experiment I backed up my library file first than deleted all of my playlists. The size of the library file reduced to 34mb. I decided to try and sync more music onto my ipod without the playlists... and would you believe it I've been able to sync my whole music libary to my ipod for the first time - no freezing and no resetting!
I would hazard a guess that the ipod classic firmware currently has an issue syncing lots of complex, nested playlists. I've fed this back to apple and hope they can come up with a solution. I hope it's not an issue related to the reduced size of the RAM in the new ipods, otherwise there will never be a solution!
As it stands I'm gonna really simplify my playlists and keep my fingers crossed. I love playlists, they're a massive part of the whole ipod experience for me so scaling them back will be a real trade off but if it stops the resetting problems I'll have to do it. This is working for me so far so good luck to everyone else who has been having similar problems.

thank you so much for this information. I can not tell you, how helpful your posting is.
I had exactly the same problem, and I did follow your instructions - and for the first time in almost 3 month (and after hours and hours spent on my computer to try to resolve this problem), I am able to utilize the full capacity of my 160 GB iPod Classic.
It is very unfortunate, that I am currently not able to utilize my Folders and Playlists (just like you, I have hundreds of them which are a huge part of the iPod Experience), but at one point, my iPod was no longer able to start up and got stuck in a 're-boot' loop. After removing my most complex smart playlists, the problem disappeared (I did not remove them from iTunes, but I no longer synch them to my iPod).
So again, thanks for posting this information, and thanks for contacting Apple. I really hope, that this issue will be resolved in the next Firmware release.
FYI for anybody else who might read this post : Using the Tinker Tool (free download) makes it very easy to monitor/view the hidden files on your iPod.

  • RE: freezing and resetting problems when syncing a large music library

    Hi there,
I got a new ipod classic 160gb for christmas. I updated the firmware to 1.0.3 and synced it for the first time. When I tried to play any music it locked up and went into a loop of resetting itself which I could only break by forcing the ipod into disk mode.
I restored the ipod and tried again syncing the music in chunks. This worked until the ipod was about 50% full then it started to freeze and reset again. I took this ipod back to the store but the new one had the exact same problem!
Through a lot of trial and error I have managed to get the ipod working with only part of my library synced. By syncing music a few albums at a time I have managed to get about 86gb (of 120gb) onto it, but surely this is not how it is supposed to be! I have a dual boot system and have the same problems using windows XP or vista.
I know that I'm not the only person experiencing resetting problems with the ipod classic. Are the users who are experiencing these endless resetting problems with the ipod classic those who have large music libraries (i.e over 80gb)? Can the ipod classic simply not handle the large volumes of music it was designed to hold?
The only features I was looking forward to in the new ipod were a) larger capacity hard drive and b) the ability to organise playlists into folders on the ipod for easier browsing. As it stands I cannot sync my full library and navigating through my playlists is so slow it is hardly worth bothering. I never had a minutes trouble with my 5th gen.
Have I been unlucky and the ipod classics I have recieved have been duds? In which case should I arrange another replacement? Or is this typical of the ipod classic user experience when the user has a large music library and many playlists? Should I await a firmware update that might remedy my problems?
Lastly am I doing something wrong? Any help or workarounds would be gratefully appreciated.

best thing to do is use Playlist and Smart Playliss to fill your iPod. Just so you know, since your post seemed to indicate you thought the playlists have to be tailored to what is already on the iPod, when you sync to playlists, any songs needed for those playlists are automatically moved onto the iPod. And any songs NOT in the playlists get removed.

  • IPad 4 keeps freezing on iOS 7 please help

iPad 4 keeps freezing on iOS 7 please help.

Try to reset your device. The reset can help cure some odd issues that can crop up.
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.
