Freezing during use ever since upgrade to Lion

My Macbook doesn't freeze on login.  It doesn't freeze after waking up from sleep.
It works fine and then after a bit of use - it freezes.
I can detect no consistent pattern to the freezes.
I have gone to NEVER having to reboot (or whatever the mac equivalent is) to having to reboot about 6 times a day.  It is like I am back on a PC
I have the same amount of apps open that I did when I was on Snow Leopard and it never froze.
Did I say Never?  I meant never, ever, ever to infinity, never froze.
Now it freezes quite often.  Love my MAC!!! Not loving the freezes ever since the Lion upgrade.
Apparently freezing is happening quite a bit to other upgraded Macs.  Don't know what the deal is but PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!!!

Please be more specific.   "Freeze" means different things to different people.
Please compare your experience to mine,  observed in 10.7.x on a quad-core iMac:   I'm doing "ordinary" stuff and all of a sudden the entire display --actually the main display and on an attached monitor-- freezes... stays exactly as it was some instant before.  The mouse pointer cannot be moved by any means, including plugging in a new mouse.  There's nothing to do but shut down and reboot.  Reboot always succeeds, everything is normal -- until the next time.  Which is usually several weeks away, but in one case, the next day.
Under the technical hood, the system is unresponsive on the LAN, doesn't even respond to a ping. And afterwards,  I've found no trace of these incidents in the Console log --as would occur with ordinary kernel panic and many other failures, I guess. These are all situations in which the  Mac system realizes it can't continue and tries to sign-off as gracefully as possible, more-or-less "softly" crashing.   Note: as far as I can recall this iMac has kernel-panicked exactly once since I bought it.
I've started keeping a log of these hard crashes. The last two occurred while I was browsing in Firefix.   If this pattern repeats, I'll definitely want to look into that.  But for technical reasons it seems very, very unlikely that an application program can hard-crash a Mac.
Other than a Firefox problem my mostly superstitious suspicion is that I should have bought the highest-price RAM upgrade rather than the medium-priced set I added after installing 10.7 <grin>  Memory failure would explain the problem, I think.

How can I change which user boots at start up? Ever since upgrading to Lion X my iMac no longer opens to the user on it prior to shut down. It now opens to a user who is virtually never on - which is actually me under a different name. This division of my Mac happened when I switched to my new Mac and didn't know I had to use the same name to transfer my data. My old data is listed as a separate user. Over time my old user name brings up a window full of ???? at the bottom. It looks like no apps ever upgrade there. It is driving me crazy to have to now switch back each time I start my computer. (I am using an iMac with 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor).

  • Ever since upgrading to Lion I keep getting the error message "disk was not ejected properly."

Ever since upgrading to Lion on my iMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo, I keep getting the error message "disk was not ejected properly."  I have repaired permissions and reformatted my external LaCie 2TB USB hard disk, but the error continues.  I use this disk for my Time Machine backups.  This always seems to happen when the computer wakes from sleep, but not consistently.  The computer was asleep overnight and backed up as soon as it awakend this morning.  Two hours later I get the improper ejection message.  I have used the same external disk with Snow Leopard (all versions), but never had this error message or problem.  This disk has been in use without any problems since February, 2011. Upgrading to Lion is when this problem began. This is the below message (but from online image from Snow Leopard, but Lion message is essentially the same).

I had a similar issue. Mine was with a Seagate GoFlex drive. The solution was to install GoFlex for Mac 1.1.2 which included a 64-bit driver to disable the drives built in sleep timer:

Ever since upgrading to lion my wifi has been dropping out constantly is apple going to fix this?

There are two possibilities, 1)it is a software problem which will be fixed.
2)It is a hardware problem, and youll have to take it to an iStore.
BUT there is something you should know.
If your under apple care, its free.
If you are not under apple care, itll cost you something to find out where the problem is (i dont live in the US so I dont know) and then extra cost for the reapair itself.

  • ISight/Quicktime issues since upgrading to Lion

    Hello,
I have tried everything but I can't seem to come up with a solution.  Problems have arose ever since upgrading to Lion on my early-2008 Macbook Unibody.  I have seen many users on this board saying that Lion has broken their iSight as well.  Here are my issues.
    iSight
    - seen in System Profiler (Hooray)
    - cannot be seen by any application
    - does not work with any other user
    Quicktime
    - fails for screen recording, audio recording, and video recording ("The Operation Could Not Be Completed")
    - can play movies just fine
    Solutions I have tried
    1.  Uninstalled everything 3rd party
    2.  PMU reset (several times)
    3.  Repaired Permissions
Any other assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Cheers.

    • If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (are you certain that you used
the correct "reset" procedure?) continue with the following.
    • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the 10.7.2 Combo Update:
         http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates
can sometimes correct problems like yours.

Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, my AOL messages sometimes, but not always open with a blank page. If I open AOL in Firefox, the messages open fine.  This does not happen with any messages by any means, and it is not any type of certain message. In fact, in the same screen I can often open an email from the same sender with email intact. This is weird. Sometimes I close the page and open a new page. Sometimes that works and sometimes it does not. It is a very annoying thing.

    Hi,
When you start Messages fro the first time you are asked for an Apple ID
When this is verified and entered it appears in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts and is Enabled.
The App should have also picked on on those iChat Accounst you had before.
These should be Enabled if they were when you last used iChat.
Exactly which "Accounts" are logged in can be seen in Message Menu > Accounts and will include the iMessage "Account" and Bonjour.
In the Window menu you will see CMD +0 for the Messages window and CMD+1 for the "Buddies" window which is a combined list at this stage.
Go to the Preferences > General Section and Untick the "Collect all accounts into one list".
This will give you separate iChat type Buddy lists.
You can check if that account/Buddy list is set to Invisible or if in the Preferences > Accounts > Security you have settings that will block some people from seeing you as On line.
You are saying Buddies can see you as On Line which implies they are still sending to your AIM based Names (@Mac.com is a valid AIM Screen Name)
I am not sure from your post if you are trying to iMessage their email IDs thinking they are Apple IDs and that they are using Messages as well.
There is no Buddy list for iMessages side
No-one can tell you are "On Line" until they have your details in the "To" spot in Messages with the correct iMessaged contact info (iPhone Number or Apple ID)
Obviously an Apple ID can be an email or look like one.
In some cases they are also valid AIM Screen Names as well.
In the case or the @mac.com name you may have linked this Apple ID to iMessages as well.

  • Please help - computer is crashing & freezing ever since upgrade to Leopard

Ever since upgrading to Leopard, my computer has been crashing a lot more. Sometimes it just freezes up. Most recently, I got the gray screen with a bunch of different languages telling me to restart using the power button. Here is the crash report. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and if there's anything I can do to help?
    Thanks!

    I'd suggest doing this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Have been using Lightroom on my Apple computer for years. Now, ever since upgrading to Apple's  Yosemite operating system I get an error message (150:30) every time I try to open a lightroom file. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Also how do I subscribe to Adobe's Premium Support? Every time I've tried (through contact support) I just get taken on an unending loop.

I think we need a lot more information.
Exactly what does the message say?
Exactly what files are you trying to open?
Exactly how are you trying to open them (what menu command or button or mouse action or keyboard shortcut)?
And lastly, what version of Lightroom are you using?

    Provided feedback to Apple viahttp://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Submitted a bug/enhancement request via my free Apple Developer account

Encouraged every poster, like yourself, to raise this with Apple in your own words
Next week, I will call Apple Support under the AppleCare agreement for my iMac
Please give them feedback, and we might get this silly design decision changed.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Ever since I installed Lion, I have problems using Excell

Ever since I installed Lion, when ever I open Excell ,30 files open and I have to close them before I can start using it. WTH is wrong ?

Disconnect all wired peripherals except the drive in question. The drive should be connected to a built-in USB port, not a hub, and it should have an external power source. Make sure the USB cable is securely seated at both ends. Boot in safe mode.
Test. Same problem? Connect it to a different built-in USB port. Same problem now? Try a different USB cable. Still the same?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)
If you have the same problem with the drive in all the above tests, then test it with another Mac, if possible.

  • My iPhone 4S has been crashing all day, and so has my husbands. It has been working absolutely fine ever since upgrading to iOs7, became slow 2 days ago, and today it crashed during every application. Photos, text, calls, apps... EVERYTHING!

Trying to take photos during Christmas Eve service and the whole thing just shuts down over and over. It's fully-charged, I keep minimal apps on it, and have followed all battery-saving techniques ever since upgrading to ios7. This is pretty important -- we have no other cameras in our home and now we have no way to take pictures Christmas Morning!!!

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Can't always connect to remote speakers since upgrading to lion

In one fell swoop I did a lot of upgrading, and ever since I haven't been able to reliably connect to any remote speakers using iTunes on my iMac.  From iTunes (or the Remote app on the phone or iPad) I can see remote speakers, but I cannot connect.  From iTunes, I just get the stripy progress bar, and it won't ever go away unless I cancel out.  From the remote app, it just becomes unrepsonsive.
    Context:
I have a iMac with OSX Lion, that I upgraded from Snow Leopard a few weeks ago. At about the same time, I updated iTunes to 10.5 from the last 10.4 release to be able to get the IOS 5 update on my and my wife's phones.
I have an Airport Extreme connected to our broadband, with 3 airport expresses in various places in our house connected on a wireless network to stereos for remote speakers.  The iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet.  After upgrading the OS and iTunes, I got a notice that there was a firmware update for my two most recent airports (the Extreme and one of the expresses).  They are running version 7.6 of the firmware, the other two airports are running 6.3.
There has been no change to the physical environment -- no sources of interference or anything like that.  I can play music from the Music app on my phone to any of the remote speakers, there is no problem there.
About half the time, if I restart everything (wireless base stations, and then the computer) I can get the remote speakers to work.  However, the next time the computer wakes up from sleep mode, I have the same connection problem described above.
Has anyone else experiences these sorts of troubles?  I have seen some similar problems with older versions of all these applications and OS's -- and the solution there was to turn off ipV6 -- however, it doesn't look like that's an option now.  Is this an identified bug, and is there a fix on the way?  Is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Well, after some experimentation and internet-lookin', I deduced that is possibly a wi-fi problem.  It seems that many people are having wi-fi problems since upgrading to Lion, and although I'm not connecting directly to my wireless network, it does form a pretty big chunk of my setup describe above.
So I tried the fix outlined on OSX Daily here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/06/lion-wi-fi-problems-solution-mac/
Essentially what it has you do is to create a new network location, name it, and then renew your DHCP lease.  This seems to have worked for the time being.

  • Since upgrading to Lion iphone sync causes unrecoverable crash

Basically when trying to sync iPhone my entire system crashes/freezes requiring a hard reset.
I had previously posted an unresolved fault that was similar with Time Machine. I ended up resorting to buying a Firewire 800 drive instead of the USB one I was using and Time Machine is now working correctly.
HOWEVER, I cannot sync my iPhone 3G. The sync starts but the computer completely freezes. I have tried reinstalling iTunes 10.6 but this had no effect.
I have tried resetting the sync data as per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627 but this has not worked.
Bizzarrely I have been able to restore a previous iPhone backup but am unable to do a Sync.
USB devices seem to be OK excepting the HDD whcih i have abandoned.
I am pretty staggered that there are so many people experienceing problems after upgrading to Lion. This is a fairly new macbook pro i5 so it really shouldn't be an issue. Its clearly a software glitch but I have very little to go on. Nothing is written to Console before the crash so there is nothing much to go on there.
If anyone can suggest a remedy i;d be pleased to know.
Look forward to hearing form you

    Hi Steve,
I'm having a similar, if not exactly the same problem. I often download files from my Beyonwiz PVR, convert them to mpeg and DV files using MPEG Streamclip (with Quicktime MPEG playback component), then burn a disc with iDVD. Since upgrading to Lion, I notice that the audio in these files, and the burnt DVD in particular, can be slightly out-of-sync with the video. Although the effect is slight, it's completely unacceptable in my book - its like trying to watch something that been badly dubbed. I find it to be a very jarring effect to watch voices and intonation out of sync with the picture.
