Freezing MBP when inserting USB or Thunderbolt connector

I have quite new MBP Retina, it was working very well in the beginning but now, without any reason, it is not working that well. When I connect any USB connector (printer or external HDD), thunderbolt with ethernet adapter etc. - the cursor freezes for 5-10 sec (just now when connecting the ethernet adapter, the computer has frozen completely and I had to do a force restart). The same when opening the lid - it often takes quite long time before the laptop awakes (there is a grey and then light blue screen) and often the cursor freezes too for some time.
This is very strange and unwelcome and certainly not as I would expect "the best Mac ever" to behave - for such a price. As I said - it was not doing like that from the beginning, but was spoilt like this some time ago. What can be the reason and how to bring it back to normal functioning ?

It's new and it seems as if you are having hardware problems - take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problems. Could be logic board related since it's happening with both ports.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • MBP retina 15" 2012 model Thunderbolt connector loose

I am not sure if anyone noticed. My MBP 15" retina 2012 model thunderbolt connector is kind of loose. It's hard to describe the feeling but if I connect ethernet connector while my computer on my lap, connector will be unplugged if I move a little. Not only this, I am unable to move my MBP a little if I have my 27" apple display connect to it. I never have this kind of problem with my old 17" MBP.
I took it back to apple store and had the connector board replaced. It plays just a little better but still having the same issue. I kind of tested 2 MBP in the store all happen the same. I was told there is nothing they can do about it in apple store. I wonder if anyone has the same problem.
    thanks
    Wesley

Congrats on finding a solution to your problem, but I doubt this will work for most of those here. I've reset NVRAM (PRAM is for older, PowerPC Macs) a few times for other issues since I first noticed my Thunderbolt port losing connectivity if jiggled, and that problem has remained consistent.
Just yesterday I reset NVRAM to help diagnose an issue with my screen, and can verify that the port that has been a problem still loses connectivity with my Apple Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, Apple DVI Adapter, and Apple Dual-link DVI Adapter.
Therefore, for myself and most here, this is not a software issue. Anyways, a software problem wouldn't explain something that occurrs when a cord is jiggled. Unless there's some sensor that is reporting to the machine that the signal should be cut even though a connection could be maintained, which wouldn't make any sense.
Good to know that some, however, might find some level of solution by resetting NVRAM

  • Script:  When insert USB, run App.

    Here's the deal:
When I plug in a USB drive, and it pops up on the desktop, I want it to automatically run a little application thats in it. This application would be some text document or something that would open up like a notice. I can do that part.
I just need help figuring out What program to use to write this "autorun" script in, and how to go about writing it.
Also, I want this to be able to fire every time I insert that USB key into a mac, of any kind.
Is. This. Possible. Haha. I'll be looking forward to anyone's insight into this.
    Macbook Pro 2.3GHz Core Duo, 3GB RAM, 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It isn't possible to create a script on an USB drive which would run every time the drive is connected to the computer; for security reasons, scripts such as these must be set up through an interface on the computer prior to the drive being connected that requires explicit action on the part of the person using the computer.
The closest possible thing that can be done is to create a picture which includes the message, place the picture on the drive, and set it as the background picture for the folder that opens when the disk is double-clicked.

  • Photosmart 7525 now errors when insert USB thumbdrive (error B8BD3348)

I have been using a USB thumbdrive to scan documents then move to my computer to save (I prefer this over emailing documents, routed through the internet, for security). I have done this for months with the same printer, flash drive and laptop.Recently, I inserted the thumbdrive, the screen flashes blue with a code I think is B8BD3348 (it flashes bright so the video on my phone gets overwhelmed and blurs, and it is gone in under 2 seconds) then the screen goes black with "Printer Error: There is a problem with the printer. Turn the printer off then on." and all the lights (power, network, home, back, cancel and help) start flashing.I can reset (if I take out the USB, otherwise when it restarts it does the same thing). And the USB thumbdrive can still be read by the computer, and I have scanned the thumbdrive (TrendMicro) and found no issues.

Hello , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! I see you are having USB issues.  I would love to try and help you, but I do need a little information first. I am linking a few HP Support documents below that will show you how to find your product number. Also, please include which operating system you are using. Also, if you're using Windows, please include whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please let me know what you find.  Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!

Just as final note on this topic. I discussed the problem with the local Apple Repair Centre who advised reinstalling 10.5.1, as suggested by baltwo, before bringing the machine in for repair. I did this and everything seemed OK. It has been running backups for 10 days now without a problem.

  • Headphones freeze iPad when inserted with iOS 6

Just upgraded to iOS 6 for iPad 3. When headphones are plugged in no sound and freezes. What's up with that?

Thanks for all (Ocean20 & Courcoul) who replied.
Reset the device did not help me but it does triggers me to attempt to resend the PDF file attachment on email--and it works the 2nd time.  My problem is now solved.
The Adobe Reader is very helpful--it allows me to scroll through the document easily, unlike iBooks, where I cannot scroll straight up or down.

  • MOVED: K9A Platinium - PC freezes everytime I insert USB device win 7 x64

This topic has been moved to Windows 64bit.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=141830.0

I hate to revive a solved thread, but I had an issue doing the same task -- installing Windows 7 x86 in a Windows Virtual PC instance on a Windows 7 x64 operating system. This thread was the top result, but it did not solve my problem.
My problem was not related to a bad download. I was able to confirm that the SHA1 was the same for my MSDN download as what was listed on the website. In other threads, some people used USB flash drives to install Windows, but I don't have access to one
of those. I tried using Virtual CloneDrive to mount the ISO as a drive, and I tried burning the ISO to a DVD and running it from the physical drive as well. Neither worked.
Here is what solved my problem:
In the VPC profile, if you right-click and select "Settings", then select the "DVD-ROM" option on the left, it will give you the option to select which physical drive the virtual machine will be using. Instead of using a drive, select "Open an ISO Image"
and browse to the file that way.
For me, this circumvented the whole CD/DVD driver issue and I was able to install Windows successfully.

my macbook pro freezes when I use peripherals, thunderbolt, USB.... and it becomes imposible to edit HD videos, any suggestions?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

You can't reformat it and not wipe everything on it.
Have you tried a different USB port?
Only other option, back it up on a different computer.

  • RMBP 15" 2013 won't connect to wifi when USB or Thunderbolt connected

Has anyone else noticed any issues connecting to wifi when they have a device plugged in to the USB or Thunderbolt ports? Mostly happens when turning on or waking from sleep. As soon as I removed the connected devices it connects to the wifi instantly! This has happened when I've had my Apple monitor connected via the Thunderbolt port and on a seperate occasion when my iPhone was connected to the USB.
    Tis werid!
    I'm running Mavericks OSX 10.9.2 on a 2013 15" rMBP :-/

Go to System Preferences > Network > Click the Cog Wheel > Set Service Order > Drag Airport to the top.

  • IPhoto 11 does not see thumb drive when inserted into USB Port, 9 did.

I updated from iphoto 9 to 11 and updated to OSX, Previously when a usb thumb drive was inserted iphoto would see it, now irt does not, anyone have any hints for me?

    Well here's the first problem:
The drive is in MS-DOS (FAT) format (a 500Gb Lacie).
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. So, get the Library onto an appropriately formatted disk.
If you're thinking of reformatting that disk, remember that doing so will erase it, and so make sure you back it up first.
I would try open the Library from an appropriately formatted disk. If the issues persist them try the rebuild with Library Manager again.

Is the Mac set to sleep the drive after 10 minutes or so?
What are the other symptoms with regards to your freeze? Does the screen go dark? Is the clock still running?

  • 20g Ipod freezes up when connected to my mbp

My 20G 4th gen ipod freezes up when I connect it to my mbp, it won't even detect it. But when I connect it to my wall charger it works fine and but I want to add new music.

My 10g is freezing up too. Except it'll freeze during playback and won't do a thing 'till the battery dies. It will display whatever track it was on last and won't budge. I've tried pluggin' it into the charger, connecting to the computer; nothing.
    Any updates?

  • LAN disconnects when removing USB device.

Hi. So I have a concern about my fairly new MSI board. Model: Z97 Guard-Pro. Sometimes when I plug/unplug a USB device from the backpanel 3.0 ports (lowest down set), my LAN will disconnect. My router connects to the mobo via an Ethernet cable which becomes disconnected. However the LAN does not disconnect when I INSERT a USB device, only SOMETIMES when disconnecting. Nevermind, it disconnects when insert and disconnect.
I then have to remove the Ethernet cable and plug it back in for it to recognise the Ethernet device. Sometimes it wont even recognise when doing that. I have to disable the adapter in Windows 7 and the re-enable for it to recognise. What can cause this issue?

Does the same happen when you just just touch the lan connector?
Just tried it now. Jiggled it left and right with some play in movement and it disconnected in Windows but that seems to be because the contacts aren't touching. Pushed it back in and it reconnected. However with the USB issue when I take the cable out and put it back in, sometimes the LAN adapter will still say disconnected. The LAN cable is not touched in any way and it will DC.

  • Where can i buy a thunderbolt connector?

    Hello,
i have a mac book pro and a pin of the thunderbolt connector has been broken. Now i need a new connector which i could solder on the logic board. But where can i buy a new connector?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dominik

This is not going to be easy if it is possible at all. Even finding the socket is going to be a problem.
You can go to places like Mouser Electronics - Electronic Components Distributor and find thunderbolt connectors for pc boards but without having the part number for the one in the MBP or its physical specifications there is no way to figure out which one to get.
In addition PC boards today are not soldered in the traditional way making home repairs extremely difficult if not impossible. You're likely to wind up rendering the board totally useless.
If the system is a mid 2012 it should be under warranty, are they saying this is not covered?
I see you having two options, one pay to have it fixed (or see if you can work out some kind of deal if you are under warranty) at least you know the job will be done right and the work will be guaranteed or two, forgo the thunderbolt port and stick to USB 3.0.
Wish I could be more help here,
    good luck
