Freezing on shutdown

I have a new MacBook Pro - it's my first mac. It's freezing on shutdown. When I shut it down, all icons disappear from the desktop so all you can see is the wallpaper/backdrop. Then it freezes. This has been happening at night - I have left it on hoping it would shut down or go into sleep mode. In the morning the battery has apparently died because it won't start up unless I plug it in. (It had a fully charged battery the night before.) What is the cause of this and what should I do? I searched these forums but couldn't find this exact question.
This MacBook is about 3 weeks old and as my first mac, I am finding it disappointing in its reliability. This is the third issue I've had - the first being an apparently corrupted file in my library that filled up my entire hard drive on my third day of ownership. So I could use some encouragement!
Thanks in advance.

This is a tangent but I just used whatsize and there is some file in my library under "filesync" that is called "Bands" and is taking up 90 gigs. I have no idea what this is.
3 days after I bought this computer a similar thing happened and I took it to the Genius Bar. They said a file in "filesync" was corrupted - it was taking up 70 gigs and had to be deleted. It looks like this is happening again and I am really frustrated with this computer!

  • IPAD 2 freezes on Shutdown and is now stuck, how do I unlock it?

    Hi Folks,
My shiny new engraved iPad2 freezes during shutdown and it now stuck with spinning shutdown icon :-( I left it over night and it's still spinning 8 hours later. There's no way to force power it down and unlock it. When I connect it to itunes I get a dialog that states "unknown error occurred (0xE8000065)".
    Thanks,
    Tom.

Ok, I called the tech support. The solution to unfreeze the iPAD 2, is to hold down the HOME and the POWER buttons simultaneously for over 16 seconds. This will reset the iPAD and you should see the metallic Apple Logo as the iPAD basically reboots itself.
Why the iPAD got frozen in the first place is still a mystery :-( But anyhow, it's all working just fine now :-)
    Thanks,
    Tom.

  • Intel Imac freezes on shutdown

    Hi,
I'm a long time windows user, but I've only had this mac for about 2 weeks so everything is just about new to me. The first week's been no problem but out of the blue during this 2nd weekend my imac has started to freeze on shutdown. I hit shut down, the blue screen comes up, the spinning thing spins and then when the machine should shut down the spinning thing stops. It's completely frozen. I've let it sit like this for up to 45 minutes and it just doesn't work its way out so I have to hold the power button til the machine turns off. I've installed the latest updates and I've ran the disk utility in the utilities folder, but the problem persists.
Like I said before, this is a new computer and I haven't done too much to it. It's connected to a canon pixma mp150 printer via USB, an HP deskjet 8750 printer via a netgear wireless router, a wacom intuos 2 via USB and my ipod via USB. All that I have installed is the camino web browser, open office and x11, AIM, divx, adobe photoshop cs3 and adobe illustrator cs3. That's all the information I have.
I tried looking up this problem on google and at the apple website but I can't seem to find anything that matches.
If you have any ideas what the problem is, I'd love to hear it! I really don't want to have to return this computer and face high restocking fees!
    Thanks!!!

    Hi ChiaCheese,
one way to solve your problem might be to create a new account into which you copy everything from your old account. This solved my problem with FileVault:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305454
If that's too heavy, have you checked: Finder/Go/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, run the permissions.
You can also run the startup from the CD and check the hard drive.
This page gives good information about what you can do with Mac OS problems:

  • PB 3400c keeps freezing, wont shutdown

    Hello All!
This ones got me stumped! I have a 3400c/240 powerbook given to me by a friend (to add to my collection of 10 other macs!) that was in excellent condition. Erased the drive and clean installed up to 9.2. it has 144 megs of ram. this machine keeps locking up constantly, sometimes after only a few minutes. if it does run for a while, and you click on shut down, it will just sit there until you have to hit reset, and then shut down again as soon as it boots back up. Any clues? Already reset power manager and PRAM.
    Thanks so much!

Could be worth posting on the OS9 forum as well, John.
I run 9.2.2 on my 3400 and it's now trouble-free, touch wood (yes, using OS9 Helper from OS9 Forever), but it took a bit of adjustment and I've kept the 9.1 system folder, labelled "previous system folder", intact as a fallback.
I had a similar freeze-on-shutdown problem for a while and tried everything. This was a couple of years ago and my memory of it is vague, alas, but I think what cleared it up was, of all things, replacing the Apple CD/DVD driver extension with the Apple CD-ROM extension from OS8.6 or even 8.1. Happened to have an old OS8 installer CD lying around and used Tomeviewer on it. Since then it's been sweet.

  • New iMac Freezing on Shutdown

I got a new 21.5" (standard 500GB storage, 4 GB RAM) iMac about three weeks ago, and with the exception of the first time I shut it down, it freezes on the blue blue screen with the spinning wheel every time I attempt to shut it down. I eventually give up and manually turn it off using the power button.
I quit all programs before shutdown and have checked the Activity Monitor to see if something is still running, although I have to admit I'm not quite sure what all of the information in Activity Monitor really means. I use several external hard drives and use a USB to charge my BlackBerry, but ejecting and unplugging all devices before shutdown has made no difference with the freezing up.
The only additional software I've installed since purchasing the iMac is Photoshop CS5, Blackberry desktop manager and Microsoft Office. I don't believe it's the Blackberry software that's causing a problem because it began freezing on shutdown even before I downloaded that.
What could be causing this problem? Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Discussions - Whatever is causing the problem, you are still covered by Apple Care, so call them and have them deal with it. Their number is 800-275-2273 and they will take care of you. By the way, you have posted in the iMac G5 Forum, which is for PPCs, you have an intel machine.
    Good luck,

  • Tiger freezing on shutdown/USB issue?

    Hi,
I am running Tiger 10.4.6 on an iMac g3 4000mhz with 640mb ram. Suddenly, the iMac freezes on shutdown though the mouse pointer is on screen and can be moved. The only way to get the machine back on is to switch the unit off.
Another problem which could be linked is that my LaCie external USB drive does not mount on startup. When I run System Profile of disk utility, it takes and age to find it, and sees the drive (even though it's not mounted) and then does mount the volume.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be with this?
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi jameseyre1 and everyone!
I do have the similar problem, and no solution yet. After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse just like you do (not when screensaver is on, though)
LaCie mounted perfectly and works just great and it might be a coincedence. Anyway, maybe these two problems are related - we will be greatful for any thoughts. Thanx.

  • Brand new T440p freezing on shutdown - happening on multiple identical laptops

I purchase Lenovo laptops for my employees at work.
Just ordered 2 brand new T440P laptops. Both machines are exhibiting the same behavior.
Turned on first machine, ran windows Update + did firmware update. Machine restarts after firmware update (automatically), but it just hangs at the ThinkPad wallpaper (no icons/desktop/mouse). Since I did a firmware update, left the machine there for 24+ hours before doing a hard shutdown. It continued to sit there over the 24 hours, had to eventually do a hard shutdown. Machine is obviously bricked because the firmware did not update correctly.
Turned on the second machine, booted into Windows for the fist time, started a clean shut down immediately, experiencing the same hang. Hard reset the machine, same thing happens every time.
Is there some issue going on with these machines? Luckily CDW is great about return policies, but this needs to be addressed.

My coworker and I each bought a new T440p, and we are experiencing the exact same problem in both of our machines (freezing on shutdown with the wallpaper showing and nothing else).  I did a clean factory restore on my machine, but the problem still persists.  It probably happens one in every 5 times or so (i.e. very frequently).  The only way to get out of it seems to be by holding down the power button.  Both of our machines are i5 4200M with NVIDIA 730M.  Has anyone tried calling Lenovo about this?

  • MBP Freezing on shutdown

    Hi All,
Recently my MBP has started to completely freeze on shutdown. The freeze leaves the GUI completely intact yet nothing updates (IE time stops, etc). The mouse still moves but nothing can be selected. I've left it in this state for 5 minutes before holding power. On startup after this has happened it doesn't seem to complain either.
What would be the best set of steps to isolate the problem?
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

Ok well some of us have the same issue...
I thought it was the recent Parallels update that I did. I went to build 4560 and it seemed like this started to happen after that. I then booted the MBP ran a few things in Mac OS (never entered Parallels) and then it froze again on shutdown.
Yesterday morning I opened it up and reseated the RAM chips several times sliding them in and out.
When I went to shutdown at the end of the day it froze... I let it sit and after about 1 minute it actually did shutdown. I was quite surprised. I'll see if maybe I have not just been giving it long enough to finish doing what it is doing.
My question which started this is if there is any log file I can look at that shows the last shutdown sequence.
Thats the problem with having such a nice GUI on Mac OS... I no longer spend much time at the unix prompt looking at logs like I used to in Linux. Now I have no idea (forgetful) where things might be!

  • T400 with Windows XP, freezes on shutdown

Hi, I recently purchased a Lenovo T400 laptop (originally with vista) and installed Windows XP on it. I installed all the drivers one by one from the lenovo website, and verything works nicely- except for one hitch. When I go to shutdown or restart, it starts shutting down and then at the screen "windows is shutting down" everything freezes in place. I cant move the mouse and it won't shutdown no matter how much time I give it. So I have to manually shut it down using the power button. I was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before and know of a fix? Thanks very much,
    Thio

I'm reviving this post since I'm having the same issue.  Windows XP and hangs on during shutdown.  Yesterday I installed around 30 updates using the ThinkVantage program. Maybe is the Power Management Driver, BIOS update, who knows.  Any help will be really appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
I also have same exect problem for my T400 (after installing new audio driver).
No fixes found yet, but system restore (prior to new audio driver installation) at safemode worked for me.
(since windows can't shutdown normally on regular mode).
    Hopefully this helps.

  • Spinning wheel freezes before shutdown

Can anyone enlighten me please on what is being checked by the system during shutdown while the spinning wheel is spinning?
My Mac Pro is not shutting down properly and the wheel freezes just before the system reboots. This reboot does not allow you to do a Safe start or go to alternate OS on startup
I am using a Matrox Triple Head to Go box and the Mac works fine when I bypass it However I have a three montior system for a reason and having to fall back to one is very painful
I do recall seeing something in passing on a browse about the spinning wheel inicates the system is looking for something and when it freezes it may have to do with nor finding that something, sorry I did not pay closer attnetion to that comment at the time
    Any insights most welcome
    Thanks a lot

    Any help?

  • System freeze during shutdown

I have noticed a couple of times that during shutdown immediately when plymouth kicks in the system just freezes. It is not leaving behind any logs. And it does not occur often. I use kde 4.4 rc2 from kde-mod. But this occurs after kdm quits and plymouth kicks in.
Anyone else facing the same issue? Any ideal how I can debug this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
To follow on from the advice re ensuring the driver is the latest version before attempting any other fix, if the problem continues, it is by far better to have the system shutdown gracefully by pulling the USB connection than to shutdown by removing power! At worst, disconnecting the USB cable would do no more than cause problems to the system's printer setup files or print queues, but disconnecting the power COULD cause significant damage to directory and file structure on the hard drive, and actually result in the system being unable to boot.

  • 10.4.11 imac freezing during shutdown

Hi, discovered my mother has been turning her imac off at the wall every night because when she tries to shutdown it freezes. It freezes at the point when the circular lines are spinning. Any suggestions?

Hi Alexis, and a warm welcome to the forums!
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.

  • Laptop freezes on shutdown

Does anyone know what to do? Everytime I hookup a usb hub, targus, or belkin, and plug in a jump drive, everything works fine, until you go to shutdown and then the computer freezes to blue screen and just hangs there. If you don't use the hub, and plug in a jump drive disk, then there is no problem. ?? Thanks for any thoughts or solutions on this.

    Hi valleydoll,
Something isn't compatible somewhere. USB hubs can cause these problems but it might be hardware causing this issue too. First, if the hub came with drivers, reinstall new ones. Depending on the USB hub manufacture, you can usually download them from their web site. If reinstalling drivers doesn't do the job, try just connecting one piece of hardware at a time and try shutting down your MacBook... see what happens. Sometimes it's a matter narrowing down the culprit.

  • Machine freeze when shutdown

    Hello
First, sorry if I write something wrong cause English is not my first language.
Recently, I just did a full update using "pacman -Syu", but later on when I tried to "shutdown -h now" (even as root), the computer failed to shutdown correctly. All the usual steps like unmounting etc are [DONE] but when "POWER OFF" shows up, it freezes there. I notice that before, when shutdown worked correctly, the cursor blinked before "POWER OFF" and when it showed "POWER OFF", the cursor disappeared and PC turned off. But now, the cursor was still there, but no blink no whatsoever, it just freezes together with the PC.
There are only 2 things that I find notable :
    - During the first update, some packages were failed to retrieve so I had to switch to a different mirror
    - The kernel was updated too
    Please advice, thanks in advance
I'm running Arch 686, if there is anything else you'd like to know, I will provide the details
