Freezing... slow... help!

I don't really know what is causing this, but my messenger, and i photo keep freezing.
when i minimize all the programs, and go back to finder all the programs are gone from the desktop and take almost 15 or so seconds to reappear again (most of the time i need to wiggle my mouse over where they usually are)
the conversation windows in messenger drag and freeze while they're being minimized (look like they're over-lapping)
I recently got a digital camera, and have uploaded a tonne of photos, could this be the problem?
I just want it to get back up to speed!

We need a little more info like how much RAM do you have etc. Down load X Resource Graph http://www.gauchosoft.com/xrg/ and give us the cpu usage, temps etc. How much hard drive capacity do you have and what percentage of it is being used? Down load MacJanitor http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=macjan itor&plt%5B%5D=macosx&x=20&y=8 and run all the standard Apple apps.

Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
If this doesn't resolve your problem, then let me know.
    Good Luck!

  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...

Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer.
Repair your disk from your System DVD.
Repairing permissions from the Tiger or Leopard DVD
Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.
    ===============
    Get a larger HD
    ===============
Use Software Update to update your OS to OS 10.5.6.
Afterwards, repair permissions & restart your computer.
Your system info confirms you are still using an outdated version - OS 10.5.4.

  • Yosemite everything slow, freezing up, Help before I toss this machine in the trash!

Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite my machine has gotten slower and slower.  At this point functioning on this machine is a train wreck.  Open an application - go get coffee, fold laundry, check...still application bouncing.
When it finally opens every action brings the spinning beachball.
Multiple pages while browsing the internet? Can't do it.
    Multiple applications open?  Nope
Everything loads impossibly slow and often crashes - I spend more time Force Quitting and trying again than I do actually getting done what I set out to do.
So far this is what I have done:
    Multiple disk utility repairs
    SMC reset
Wiped the computer completely clean and reinstalled.
    Problem description:

Why don't you just give it a try to uninstall it, use Firefox and see it it does not improve. If it is not it, you can always install anew your preferred browser. It is cheaper, and quicker than having a HD replaced. Plus you can do it yourself immediately.
If it is not that, I will also support the HD theory, with one variation. Check if there was not a Firmware update for your WD HD. If I recall correctly, there was a problem and some firmware and software had to be updated. Worth a try?

  • Leopard slows down and freezes - please help

I'm running Leopard on a Macbook and I have had startup problems and slowdowns in general a couple of days now.
When I start up the machine I get the apple logo, the spinning circle and then the blue screen for about 2-3 minutes before I get my Leopard wallpaper. It then takes another 3-4 minutes before the dock and icons load up and usually a couple of minutes before I can actually access the desktop.
The whole startup usually took me less than 2 minutes total and is now as you can see a much longer process.
Once in Leopard applications take much longer to load than usual and often freeze or stop responding. I get the colored spinning disc a lot and it seems like Leopard is using a lot of time loading up even simple apps like iCal and Mail.
I'm not sure but it seems like Finder is the problem. I have tried restarting Finder a couple of times and this always gives me the gray screen telling me to restart Leopard by holding the power button.
I have no idea why this has happened, I haven't installed any big apps or used up a lot of the HD space. I still have approx 85GB on my HD so that shouldn't be the problem.
I have of course tried the basic troubleshooting such as restarting and verifying/repairing disk permissions in Disk Utility so I don't know what else to do.
Any suggestions, tips, or ideas are truly appreciated. I really want my old Mac back, the waiting is driving me nuts.
    Thanks
    Dave

Did Verify report any errors? Did you try starting up from the Leopard installation disk and running Disk Utility from the Installer's Utilities menu, then running Repair Disk?
Verify didn't report any errors so that didn't really help.
I have just popped in my Leopard disk but there doesn't seem to be a menu for "utilities". My options are "Install Mac OS X", "Optional installs" (which doesn't have a Repair Disk option", and "Instructions".
Did your MacBook come with Leopard, or did you install the upgrade over your Tiger system?
The machine came with Tiger so I bought Leopard seperately, formatted the HD and did a clean install. But this was back when Leopard came out and I haven't had any problems with the OS until now.

  • Why is the network so slow on one computer? everything freezes! help!

we have three computers all networked together, sometimes 4, and it works really well, until it comes into contact with the one computer. It has the same programs, same spec etc, but if I try to connect to it there are 3 hour waits for a tiny file to transfer, and often just connecting to it means a complete restart of all computers. I've tried switching cables, changing the plug in the wall but no use!
please help ! i'm running around with my ipod trying to move files around !!

    Hi Becky;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forum.
In order to be of any help to you, you are going to have to give us much more information about how these computers are networked together.
For instance are they hard wired or do you use wireless?
What hardware is used to provide the routing and switching functionality for your network?
What operating systems do they all run?
Are they all Apple or is your network a mixture of Apple and Windows.

  • Freezing! help!

I got my eMac in Sept 05. I've been reading about other people on here having a problem with a something or other and that was causing their computer to freeze. I am sure that whatever warranty I had has run out. I have no idea what makes my computer freeze. As of now, it happens whenever I open certain programs (especially Photoshop or Firefox), or if some slow-loading website pops up, or iTunes takes too long to change songs, or a number of other reasons. It stays frozen and nothing I do unfreezes it. Does anyone know what is causing this, and how I can get it fixed?

As cosmichobo has noted, your eMac is unlikely to have bad capacitors. But your profile shows 256 MB RAM, with is real-world barely adequate to run say TextEdit. If you're running Photoshop at all, or running multiple applications at the same time, you're certainly having to make heavy use of the hard drive disk cache. Adding More RAM should definitely help (Crucial has an excellent RAM configuration tool, and RAM installtion instructions are at eMac - Do-It-Yourself).
Before adding RAM, check a few common troubleshooting issues. How much free space is thre on the hard drive? If under about 5 GB, try deleting unneeded files and programs.
Boot the computer using your OS X install disk and use Disk Utility to (a) check the hard drive SMART status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window with the hard drive device name selected --- the SMART status should read "verified", and (b) run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function. Take note of any errors reported. If repairs are made, repeat Repaur disk until you get a clean bill of health. Refer to Using Disk Utility and fsck for more details.
If you normally shut down an OS X Mac overnight or leave it in system sleep, the cron maintenance tasks cannot run in their nominal 3 am timeframe. (Display-only sleep allows the maintenance tasks to run). Tiger 10.4.2 and later will (allegedly) force the maintenance tasks to run after sufficient time has elapsed. although there's some debate whether that feature's timer really works. Otherwise, you can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a weekend or two a month; you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Tiger version of OnyX with 10.4.x).
p.s. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

  • Freezing - Please help!

Hi, I have a MacBook that is about 2 1/2 years old.  It's running OS X 10.5.8.  About 3 days ago it started freezing, especially on You Tube - this is when I first noticed it, and some websites.  I try to log on to some websites like my bank, and it completely kicks me out of Firefox.  I have run the diagnostics thru Onyx and it says it's okay.  I've deleted all the history, cookies, cache.  At first I thought it might have had to do with a program I downloaded a couple weeks ago to watch videos (VLS) so I uninstalled that.  Didn't help.  Then I thought maybe it had something to do with Adobe, uninstalled those and reinstalled.  Didn't help.  The only thing I did around 3 days ago was I had a pop-up ask me if I wanted to update Firefox to include AOL toolbar.  I did.  I've since uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled -- still nothing.  I'm stumped.  I do notice it is running a little bit faster since I ran Onyx, but still having all the other issues.  Any suggestions???
    Thanks so much!!!

From here on in, you may have to become something of a detective, since any number of things might be at fault. Some may be familiar to you, while others may take extra effort.
    1. Activity Monitor. Go to Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor. Pay special attention to Network readings. If you see unusual spikes in Network, that means an appilcation may be using your bandwidth.
    2. Online vs offline. Do you notice a difference in performance when you're not connected to the internet as opposed to when you're not? Take note of suspicious applications that might be lowering your performance.
    3. Deleted, but not deleted. Many don't know that, even if you delete an applicaition, the system may still be present and active. Most of the time, there's no problem with this, but if open System Preferences and it still appears on the panel, it may still be working. Delete them with a free appliication like AppCleaner.
    4. Disk full. This probably isn't the issue for you, but it has to be mentioned. If you HD is 80% full or more, that is the source of your system delay. Back up your files and reclaim your HD space.
    5. Take detailed notes. Saying that you computer is slower is a start, but begin taking more detailed notes - at least for a little while. Note when you experience problems, with which applicaitions. Note if you're using several applications at the same time.
    6. Too little RAM? I don't know how much RAM you have installed, but if it's 2gb - that's a big bottleneck. Install 4gb instead, and your performance will double.
Oh...and post here with the results of your research. Others have or will have the same problem - for the same reason.

  • Choppy playback, freezing, slow re-indexing every time project opens

    Software:
    Premiere Pro CS5.5.2
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Source footage AVCHD (MTS files) from a Panasonic TM300 (1920x1080).
    Hardware:
    Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard
    Intel i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz 3.90 GHz
    Memory 16Gb
NVidia GeForce GTX 680 (unlocked so Premiere recognises it)
    Program on C drive (230GB - 60 GB free))
Projects on E drive (1 TB - 530 GB free). Projects in separate sub-folders. Autosaves go to these sub-folders.
Raw footage and project media on G drive (2 TB - 320 GB free).
Footage files for projects are stored in separate sub-folders. The entire AVCHD folder from the camera is included.
Sub-folders 'Media Cache' and 'Media Cache Files' are in a folder called "~ADOBE MEDIA CACHE"
A folder called "~PROJECT MEDIA" contains sub-folders for each project. This is set as the scratch disk where the Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files are stored.
All drives are SATA on local computer.
As far as I know I have no third party plugins.
I have trashed the prefs by holding Shift+Alt
I have removed large amounts of old data from the 'Media Cache' and 'Media Cache Files'
I see this problem appearing frequently in the forum but so far no definitive answers.
Opening projects takes for ever as Premiere searches for media.
Scrubbing video is slow and erratic, the frame often freezes while the CTI goes along. Happens using arrows, or shuttle or just pressing the start arrow and letting it run, in both source and program windows.
I also sometimes get  'Not responding' in the frame, but the CPU and memory are not fully used - not even half.
I was having the 'Not responding' problem when closing Photoshop CS3 (part of the Production Premium suite) but it got progressively worse and eventually Photoshop wouldn't even open so I've now uninstalled it.
Could it all be a problem with the PP CS5.5 installation?
Does anyone know if this happens with PP CS5.1? I'm thinking of going back as I can't remember having these problems when I used that.
If I do go back should I uninstall CS5.5 first?
This is all very frustrating as I'm sure you realise. I really hope you can help.

UPDATE: created another new project using avanishdivya's suggestions and this time it seems to be working well. Project loaded without long periods looking for media and conforming. Fast forward and back using JKL keys and program monitor shuttle working properly. CTI in timeline is laggy but maybe it always was - I can't remember! Anyway, thanks avanishdivya.
BTW Windows had just done a whole lot of updates before I started this project.

  • Macbook pro early 2011 freezes, slow, weird fan noise + trackpad jumping around

Hi guys, see the Etrecheck report below. My 13' Macbook pro (early 2011) has been very slow for the last few months, the fan makes a weird blowing noise (several fellow students have looked around what the **** that noise was when it started doing it), and recently started freezing when opening iTunes, OpenOffice and even Firefox.
OH AND my trackpad has jumping around without me even touching it.
What do you guys think? What's the problem, what can I do? IF I take it in how much do you think it might cost?

I did as you suggested and it it's definitely not freezing as much, though a little bit still. Thanks though!
Trackpad is also still jumping around, but I figured that might have to be replaced anyways.
