Freezing when changing users

I've been having a problem recently where when I try to change users, the login screen freezes up. Goes to spinning beach ball and won't do anything. Any ideas?

Is your signature out of date or have you been updating your Mac regularly as OS X and security updates have become available? Have you updated both the Firmware and the SMC firmware? If you have forced any shutdowns have you booted from the Install DVD and used Disk Utility in the Utilities menu to repair your hard drive? Have you used Disk Utility in Apps/Utilities to repair permissions on your boot volume at the least after installing new software or new software updates?
All of these are just regular care and keeping of a Mac computer to keep it in good working order. Here is a link to a great website with lots of info about the care & keeping of a happy Mac as well as troubleshooting ideas for various issues;

  • IMac freezes when changing the screen saver

    Hi all:
I originally posted this in the "Using Mac OS X" forum (iMac freezes when changing the screen saver, but thought I'd post here as well since the issue arises on a freshly installed OS.
We've got three 350MHz slot-loading G3 iMacs (with 512MB RAM) which we're planning to use for basic word processing. The install of Panther (10.3.5 from black retail cds with 10-seat volume license) went fine on the first two. Ran the updates to 10.3.9, installed MS Office 2004, everything working great (they're a little slow, but after all, they are only 350 MHz).
On the third, the first problem we noticed was the computer would lock up whenever we changed the screen saver from the default (Flurry; Computer Name also works). It continues to do so even after: repair permissions; repair disk; Disk Warrior; reset pram; reset nvram; reset pmu; change RAM; change hard drive; erase hard drive; write zeros to hard drive; reinstall with different set of retail CDs; trash preferences, and delete cache files. (If there's anything I've left out, it's in the other thread).
Now we've noticed that we can't create any new user accounts. We've thought about putting this one in production, just warning the user that they can't change the screen saver, but god only knows what will turn up next.
I'm starting to think it's a logic board issue, but could it be that selective? And would you see the same problem with another hard drive and different install discs? Am I missing something?
BTW, there's a crash log with the other thread.

I'm going to mark this one as answered.
I removed the hard drive from the iMac, and put it into another 350 MHz iMac, and everything works great. I can select any screen saver without having it freeze, create new accounts, whatever my little heart desires.
In checking the history of the problem iMac, there was an assortment of problems with booting (both from the hard drive and from the CD-ROM drive) which were never satisfactorily resolved. The problems just seemed to go away after sitting unplugged for a few days, as much as for anything we actually did to it.
Now we just have to decide whether it's worth fixing, or using it somewhere in a non-critical role with OS 9 installed.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Another thing is that on Skype, whenever i clicked to sharescreen it only show a complete black out window. nothing else.
Tried restore OSX mountain lion, doesn't work. what should i do?

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • Keeping iTunes playing when changing user account

    Hi,
I would like to setup a "music" account on our family iMac to select music from within iTunes and send it to our sound system. I'm tired of always having to reshelf CDs!
But for this to work, we need to be able to switch to our own account when we want to use the iMac while iTunes continue playing to the sound system. I did not find any option that may allow me to do this and right now it stops playing as soon as we switch to another account using "fast user switching".
We have Snow Leopard and iTunes 10.0.1.
My other option is to buy a second hand iPod to do this, but I hesitate buying one just for this when my iMac seems perfectly able to handle the task.
    Thanks in advance,
    Denis

    Thank you very much Tom.
It seems AirTunes has been renamed AirPlay. It is not stated that it will keep playing even when I change user account, so I am glad you were able to provide this bit of information. Your suggestion to get an Airport Express appears to be the most realistic and cheap option. As for the AppleTV, it would have been more versatile (music to my sound system, video content to my TV via HDMI), except that my sound system is very old (but still works well) and has no optical audio in, which is the only audio output option for an AppleTV, if I understand well.
It would have been nice though to have the audio out of the mac connected into my sound system and just tell iTunes to keep playing music in the background even when changing user.

  • My computer freezes when a user logs out

Since I updated to Tiger (10.4.5) from Panther (10.3.9) it often happens that, when a user logs out from his account, the computer freezes. The mouse arrow won't move, so it's not possible anymore for anyone to log back in. I have to hold the start-button to force the computer to a shutdown. After restart everything works fine.
There are 3 other users (the kids) apart from my administrator account.
Any idea what to do ?

I suggest reinstalling the 10.4.5 COMBO update, repair permissions after restart, and restart again.

  • Slow or complete hangup when changing users

hi! my daughter and i often use the same computer, a MBP
changing users, however, can be tricky, either way slow or just hanging up completely
    why?
we have tried completely login out each time as well as just jumping from user to user
    please help

    Hi papa-kostas,
If your computer is running slow then check out this article for suggestions.
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac runs slowly
It sounds like your computer has a lot going on (Fast User Switching, Boot Camp...).  Wondering if it's still at the default 4GB RAM.

  • Os x 10.8.3 freezes when changing screen saver

I recently installed 10.8.3. One of the glitches is that when I attempt to change the screen saver, my computer freezes. Is there a fix for this?

try this - not sure if it will work for you but it's worth a try.
open disk utility - verify your disk permissions - repair if errors are found then restart your macbook once the repairs are done.
see if that changes the way your macbook responds to changing your screen saver.

  • Apple TV freezes when changing TV Resolution to 1080p HD

We just got a new Samsung 1080p HD TV. When I tried to change the Apple TV's TV Resolution in Settings > Audio Video > TV Resolution, I can scroll down to highlight 1080p HD, but as soon as I press Select on the remote, the Apple TV freezes. The only way I can get out of that screen is by holding Menu and - on the remote for six seconds and rebooting the TV.
Any suggestions for how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks!

okay, so can you still have Front Row 2.3 and launcher 2.2 at the same time after the factory restore? Or if you ever have 2.2 up it will cause this "crash" issue? Cheers mate.
you might want to be carefull about what you are discussing here, as it is clearly an unauthorised hack you are running, and as such would not be allowed to be discussed on here.
i know what you mean when you say "launcher 2.2" but others might not and assume it is some sort of official apple setting.

  • ITunes 10.6 freezes when changing sync settings

Update to iTunes 10.6 on Windows 7 computer today.  Now when I try to change my sync settings, and hit "apply" - iTunes freezes and the sync does not complete.  I have already tried to factory reset the iPod Nano, and tried to totally uninstall and reinstall iTunes.  Any other suggestions?

Uninstall/Reinstall did not work. Same issue with freezing as soon as it's launched.
Just to confirm, this is 10.6.3 64-bit Windows build.

  • Macbook Air freezes when changing screensaver

I am having issues when I try to change my screensaver. Whenever I click on a different screensaver option, my Macbook Air freezes, and I have to force close System Preferences. I have no problems with changing my desktop wallpaper. I have restarted my laptop but it still freezes.
I saw another board with a similiar problem except instead of the screensaver window freezing, their desktop window would freeze.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them to the Trash.
Test. If the problem is resolved. recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

  • Screen Share - Freeze when changing accounts

When I try to change change to another account on the iMac via Screen Share, Screen Share freezes. In fact, this happens when trying to log in to another account--it does not show the log in screen.
If I Quit Screen Share and then open back up, I can then see the other account or the log in screen.
    All advice appreciated.
    Tony

    Ok found the problem.
As said before brand new device, when installing I choose to restore an iCloud back-up form my previous iPhone4.
Somehow, and I surely do not understand why! My new 5S not only had all my keyboards as it should because of the recovery, it also had the German keyboard? Which is not part of the recovery!
    Deleted the keyboard, problem solved.
It still is very strange I only had the German on "some" screens not all.

  • Game freezes when changing displays

    Hi all
    i am using Nokia 3510i.
i have a wired problem, sometimes when i change then display object in my game(2 Canvases) and in the same time i press on some keys(i am using a key listener for my game) everything freezes and i have to close my MIDlet .
now,i solved this by using a boolean flag in the :
    keyPressed(int parm1) {
    if(bRejectKeys) return;
and i set it before replacing the displays and then nothing freezes.
but i want to know why everything was freezing before,if this is a known issue and if my solution is not covering a bigger bug that might happen.
    thanks

It's tough to tell by your description what exactly is going on.
Are you starting any threads in keyPressed()? Maybe one of those threads needs to be stopped by the canvas that turned inactive. Are there any live references to the old canvas after the switch?
Maybe with some more code (the rest of the offending keyPressed(), and the code that switches the displays) we can shed some more light on the subject.

  • OS X Mountain Lion freeze when change background

when i go to desktop and then rightclick and scroll to change desktop background and choose one try to do it again from desktop not from system perefrences it will not open again so go from (sys.. prerf..)  and change it after that restart your mac you will find the first choose not the last one someone tell me what is  this .

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Sfari freezes when changing time

I had a series of freezes from safari recently, and I think I have found the cause:
Running bootcamp I sometimes boot under windows, and when I boot back to Mac the clock time has changed. So i reset it back to normal (using Date and Time ), but if I have safari running at the time it just freezes. The rest of the computer is fine, as the menu bars are, it's just the actual pages that freeze (can't scroll down, click on links ...). I can just restart safari but that some times means having to redo a lot of stuff which can be problematic.
Anyone else have that problem or know how to fix it ?

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?

iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.
