Freezing when trying to boot up

Hello all,
My powerbook has been working fine (though rather slow booting up for a while) until yesterday. When I turn the computer on (nothing external connected), I see my desktop background, the dock and the top menu with correct time and date as usual. However, none of the icons on my desktop appear so my desktop is completly empty and I see the coloured spinning wheel instead of my mouse pointer. It is frozen like this.
I have tried several things including:
Starting in safe mode, emptying trash restarting
Using Repair Disk in Disk Utility from my Software Install and Restore disks
I have a VERY full hard disk. Maybe 250MB free. Maybe erasing the hard disk would help??? I have an external hard disk I could transfer everything onto but I don't see how this is possible through disk utility. I seem to be stranded!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated as I'm well out of warranty!
Thanks,
Robbie

Hi, another1ne. Your hard drive is *way, way overfull*, and that's undoubtedly the root of your problem. You should have at least 5GB of free space on it at all times. With as little free space as you have, it's remarkable that you can start the Powerbook at all, and it would be even more remarkable if you could use it for anything. You won't be able to use it until you free up space: 1-2GB may be enough so you can start to operate the computer and continue to delete files from the hard drive normally, but not enough so you can use it efficiently or reliably.
Is your external hard drive FireWire or USB? If it's a FireWire drive, you should be able to start the Powerbook from your OS X installer disc with the external drive connected and install an OS on the external drive. Then you can designate the external drive as the startup disk, restart, and see whether the internal drive mounts on the desktop when the OS on it isn't being used to run the computer. If it does mount, back up the essential files on it to the external drive. Don't bother with system files or applications; you can reinstall those on the internal drive later. Once you've backed up everything important, erase the internal drive and reinstall the OS and applications on it. Or, if that drive simply isn't big enough to be practical given what you really need to keep stored on it, replace it with a bigger drive before reinstalling things. And in the future, try to keep at least 10% of any hard drive that contains OS X available at all times.
If your external drive is USB only, it isn't going to be very useful in your present predicament or in the future, because you can't boot a PowerPC Mac into OS X from any USB device. I recommend removing the drive mechanism from the USB enclosure, purchasing a FireWire enclosure to put it in, and proceeding as I've described above.

  • MSI NF980-G65 freezes when trying to boot from disc

I just recently purchased and received an MSI NF980-G65 motherboard to work with my AMD Phenom II x6 1055T, but sadly I have had nothing but trouble.
So far the motherboard posts its bios and has the ability to detect any (and all) of my hard drives when I have them plugged in. The hard drive that has Windows installed on it currently informs me that I need to put in my Windows disc and run the repair utility, which makes sense since I was using a completely different motherboard and CPU before.
It is when I try to press any key to boot from disc that the problem arises. When I press a key on my keyboard while that prompt is on screen, the cursor jumps as if I had hit the tab key and does nothing further.
I have a total of three copies of Windows 7 at my disposal to use, two are DVDs I had burned from using my student discount to get them, and one set (32-bit and 64-bit) were in a retail copy of home premium, all of the discs performed the same action. I had tried using different SATA cables, different power adapters, and even different DVD players to try and remedy the situation.
The hard drive with windows is an IDE hard drive, but I have tried my other SATA hard drives just to be sure, none of which fixed the problem.
I have heard briefly about m-flash, but as far as I can tell, it would appear this new motherboard did come with the latest bios version (1.4).

For the boot, I have tried both setting up the DVD player as the initial boot, and I have tried just selecting it in the boot menu.
As per the posting guide, here are more specific information:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 2.8 GHz, 9.0 MB Total Cache, AM3 Socket
Motherboard: MSI NF980-G65 v. 1.2 bios (I'm going to try and flash this to a later now, I didn't know where to look for it before) , 601-7612-010B1004183389
    RAM: G. Skill Ripjaw DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 2gb x 1 until I get this working, then it will be x4
Power Supply: Tagan BZ Series 700W
DVD: Samsung SH-S223 DVD burner with Lightscribe
HDD: Western Digital 250GB IDE drive

  • TS1717 iTunes freezes when trying to import a CD

    Please help!
My iTunes freezes when trying to import a CD
This also happens in safe mode
My driver is up to date

We had the same issue. Backtracking, it turned out that it began after our techie updated our home network - for whatever reason, the main computer no longer holds the LAN settings properly after being restarted.
It's an easy fix (until he gets back from the west coast and can fix it permanently): after I boot the computer each day, I open IE, go to "tools" - "internet options" - "connections" - "LAN settings" - check "automatically detect" and uncheck "use proxy server."
Once I do that, CDDB comes up wonderfully and imports all the data I need.

  • Creative Zen Vision 30Gb Stuck in Recovery Mode, Freezes when trying to deal with Firmware

My Zen Vision is stuck in Recovery Mode. The PC recognizes it but it comes up as 50mb Storage Media. When you touch Reload Firmware or Format All, it freezes and you have to pull the battery out to shut it off. I don't know what to do. Charges fine, never said anything about HARDWARE issues, just can't get it to not freeze when trying to load firmware back onto it.

I did the same thing, my unit was working perfectly.
I just read that these players have a laptop 2.5 hard dri've installed in the unit. If this is true, the next chance I get, I will take my unit apart (40 gig nomad zen xtra) and see if I can reinstall the firmware directly. It's probably what they do at the repair sho

  • Ipod nano 5th generation freezes when trying to play a song or video

Within the last couple of day my ipod nano 5th generation started freezing whenever i tryed to play a song. Oly way i could turn it off was by resetting it, however it did not fix the problem and still freezes whenever i try to play a song. I have even restored it to factory setting and it does the exact same thing. I don't understand why it does this, does anyone know why it freezes and won't stop? i don't have any warrenty on it and want to know if it is fixable, because it just randomly started freezing when trying to play music. If any one knows why it would be appriacted to know.

Does this happen with any song or video you play?  If so, then my best guess would be a hardware issue since a restore to factory settings did not resolve it.

  • IPhoto freezing when trying to import photos from iPhone

iPhoto has started freezing when trying to import photos from an iPhone. The device is recognised but just get "loading . . . " message with no photos appearing. Has anyone else seen this?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Firefox freezes when trying to upload or download a file. (Antivirus all disabled doesn't help). IE works fine. Happened with v3 and v4. Any clues?

Firefox locks when trying to upload or download any file, size irrelevant.
I've disabled firewall and all antivirus apps to no effect.
This happens with v3 and v4.
    IE works fine.

'''Addendum:''' The freeze is also happening at random even without opening Firefox, it has a chance of happening when I click something. My computer has frozen when I: 1- clicked the "reveal desktop" button to minimize all windows; 2- Attempted to close a tab in Chrome; 3- Clicked "play" in a Youtube video that had been loaded and waiting for some time). It will also almost always freeze when I leave it idle for more than about 10 minutes.
But it will '''guaranteedly''' freeze when trying to open FF, which doesn't happen with any other program.
I think my computer is breaking down. :(

  • Lightroom 2.6 freezes when trying to export images

I have been using LR successfully on a Windows XP machine for several years and using version 2.6 for the past several weeks . As of a few days ago, LR would freeze when trying to export images. The export functions of 'Export with Previous' and 'Export with Preset' seem to work without crashing LR but most of my exporting needs me the ability to adjust the export settings. Any advise?

I would guess LR only goes by drive-letter so if you've kept that the same it should be ok.  Look for something else.
I would look in your Lightroom Preferences files to see if there is any drive letter that no longer exists.
On Vista/Win7 my LR prefs file is in:
    C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences
XP has something similar under C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings (or Application Data)
If you open that file in a simple text-editor like NotePad then about halfway down (at least in mine) there are some export-related things that include the drive-letter and path on your hard-drive to various folders.  You can find it by searching for:
    AgMRUPopupList_AgExport_destinationFolderPathPrefix
Look through those and see if any of the drive-letters or paths are wrong and look around for other paths.  The paths will contain
    or
instead of \ because the low-level language routines LR is written with need it that way so if you change anything, keep the number of slashes consistent.
It could very well be that there is nothing wrong with any of the paths, so another approach would be to rename or move your preferences file to see if LR will recreate it with defaults for everything, and see if that clears up the lockups.
Whether you decided to edit or rename your preferences file, please make a backup copy so you can put it back in case something even worse happens and you need it back.

  • My Creative zen x-fi keeps freezing when trying to delete tracks.

AMy Creative zen x-fi keeps freezing when trying to delete tracks.> Hi. Was hoping someone could help me. I brought a creative zen x-fi and half of the times i tried to delete a track or album it would freeze, i'd reset it and the track or album was not deleted. I sent it back and brought a new one however my new one does the same except more, about 8 out of 0 times when i try to delete a track or album it freezes. It doesn't seem to have any problems deleting anything else e.g photos, videos. I looked on the support section of the site and it mentioned that the player could keep freezing if there were corrupted files. Pleae could someone tell me what exactly this mean? (i'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to things like this ) All the music on my player is from ripped cds or what was already on the laptop or player to begin with, so could there be any corrupted files from those?

    Nvm,the cleanup works Thanks man

  • Windows Server 2012R2 Fatal Error C0000034 when trying to boot

    Hi.
We patched our Server 2012R2 DC today to fix against CVE-2014-6324 using Windows update. After rebooting, we are now unable to boot and receive the error stated in the title when trying to boot.
Our primary DC however had no issues applying the update and rebooted perfectly fine.
I can only seem to find articles relating to Windows 7 SP1 regarding this error code. Is there a method for recovering this with Server 2012R2?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I think we could check if other update installed correctly.
Did you try to remaing pending.xml file to check the result?

  • ITunes freezes when trying to access "burning" tab in advanced preferences

iTunes freezes when trying to access "burning" tab in advanced preferences and also when attempting to hit burn cd button in lower left corner.

Thank you SO much!!! This is Exactly the problem I was having. I have spent untold hours in the last couple of days trying to resolve not only iTunes freezing up, but my network connectivity went bust as well. I like Blink so I'm undecided about whether to uninstall it yet, so I just disabled all of its firewall settings, and presto!... I can not only get my CD/DVD player to read and burn CD's, but iTunes and my computer remain functional. I got my computer to reconnect to the internet by doing a System Restore at a point prior to my trying to burn a CD. Thanks again so much. You saved my entire week!
