French accents on QWERTY keyboards

Short of changing my keyboard or adopting the time-consuming methods for inserting French accents when using a QWERTY keyboard (I use them now and they slow me down enormously), is there a way to reprogram[?] some keys on my MacBook Pro so they input the more common accents - à, è, é at a single keystroke?

  • How to enable an apple french (azerty) wireless keyboard to type in french whilst retaining the normal inbuilt qwerty keyboard typing in english?

Hi there, I recently bought an apple wireless azerty French keyboard to go with my English macbook air, as for my degree I often have to type in French. However, upon connecting it to the macbook air it instantly started typing as though it had the qwerty layout and only by going on system preferences and changing the language & text imput sources to French was I able to get it to type in the correct azerty manner.
The problem I have is that this also changed my macbook's inbuilt qwerty keyboard to the azerty format, and so I wondered if anyone could tell me how I can make the wireless azerty keyboard instantly be recognised as typing in the french format when I turn it on, whilst retaining my inbuilt keyboard's qwerty layout, rather than constantly having to change them both in system preferences?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Anna

    That's not possible.
But switching keyboard layouts is very simple.  Either use the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen or the keyboard shortcut apple/command plus space.
If you don't see the ¨flag¨, check the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar in the Input Sources pane.
If the keyboard shortcut doesn´t work, you may have to change the shortcut for Spotlight, which is often the same.

  • French accents / keyboard

I've figured out how to use a keyboard that will spell check and add (occasionally) the French accents. But I'd like to control the accents since it does not always detect the correct spelling. How can I find a keyboard that had these accents? In an easy way... I'm a klutz on these things! Thanks for your help and replies!!!

if you hold your finger on the letter you require (e for example) a number of accented versions of that letter will pop up.

  • Is it possible (simply) to change an iMac from French OS and keyboard to English OS and QWERTY keyboard?

I am in the process of changing my computer and would like to buy an iMac. I live in France but want to buy an iMac with English OS and a qwerty keyboard.  Is it possible (simply, and I mean simply) to change an iMac from French OS and keyboard to English OS and QWERTY keyboard?

The online site offers over a dozen different keyboards, including the one you want.

  • I hâve bought an iPad 4 retina and à Mini Mac. I bought allo à targus Versavu Bluetooth keyboard for m'y iPad and m'y Apple Mini. Because I ma french speaking, I need the french accents. How can I program them?

I have bought an iPad 4 retina and an Apple mini. I bought also a Targus Versavu Bluetooth keyboard. I ma french speaking and I have problems with the french accents that I can't find. I called Targus who said that I need to call Apple. How can I program the french accents on my Bluetooth keyboard on both computers? I don't want to be à ping--pong ball. Michel Mondou

I would echo BGreg's advice and stick to official Apple refurbished Minis sold through the store.apple.com site. They will have a 1-year warranty and be eligible for AppleCare. And they will have current OSX and iLife software.
The term "refurbished" is often abused by other retailers who apply it to used computers that have been returned by unhappy customers -- but have not actually been fully diagnosed or repaired.
The 1.66 GHz model you list is rather long in the tooth. At least get a Core2Duo model, rather than a CoreDuo.
The links to the offical Apple refurbs are here:

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB463LL/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB139LL/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB464LL/A
You'll have to check these links daily for a week or more to find them in stock.
I'd be very leery of buying AppleCare via *bay.
But lacomputercompany appears to sell genuine boxed AppleCare at prices close to Apple's educational price for AppleCare.
On another topic you brought up ... for desktop publishing on a budget I'd strongly endorse SwiftPublisher. Just enough features, just the right price -- and to my mind, works more intuitively than Apple's Pages program.

  • N8 Anna: QWERTY keyboard no longer supports accent...

Looks like on Anna the QWERTY keyboard no longer allows you to enter many of the accented characters the old kb did. For me, this was one of the joys of the old kb: I could spell my Polish and Czech friends' names correctly, and I could easily text in Norwegian (my 2nd language).
On Anna, although we have å, ä, ó, ß and so on (major west-Euro languages, Swedish) and even Icelandic þ and ð, I am missing æ and ø, so that kills Norwegian. Welsh support's also gone.
(Norwegian æ and ø are available from the alphanumeric keypad, true, but not the others.)
    Boo, Nokia. Boo.

All software can be switched to english in a few seconds via preference settings.
The person you talked to must be an idiot, because anyone can look for themselves at the web page for the online French apple store and see that qwerty keyboards are available.

  • How to type french accents?

    Hello everyone!
I changed the keyboard from english to french to type out french accents and it does not function. Can someone help me please. I need to change my keyboard to french to be able to type with french accents for my school work. Thank you for your time.

Folks, if you set out to list all the possible ways of putting in 'French' characters, you've forgotten Unicode Hex Input. And one or two others.
The real point here is underlined by Cattus Thraex. Why does the OP need to enter these characters?
Is it for, say, an essay for History class on the age of Louis XIV? In that case, assuming she is using one of the US layouts, she doesn't really need to change anything. To spell correctly a few names of places and characters, using the traditional Mac way with the Option key ("Option", mon cher LexSchellings, not "Alt" -- let's talk Mac here) is fine.
However, if she's doing homework for a French class, and she needs to enter lengthy paragraphs, and she needs to do this more than once, then such a method is a major PITA, whose only virtue is that it's less of a PITA than any of the other methods suggested (Character Viewer indeed!) The only effective way to enter French text is to learn to type in French on a French-language keyboard layout. And there are basically three built-in options here:
    (1) French (AZERTY -- there are actually two of them)
    (2) Canadian French (CSA/ACNOR, based on QWERTY)
    (3) Swiss French (based on QWERTZ)
She needs to choose the one closest to what she's accustomed to, and learn to touch type on it. If the OP is, as seems to be the uniform assumption, American or anglophone Canadian, hence familiar with QWERTY, then the CSA/ACNOR keyboard is best.
Finally, to be effective, she needs not only to enable the Input menu, but also to set a shortcut to cycle through enabled keyboard layouts, which is done in Keyboard Shortcuts.

  • French accented characters in a barcode are being dropped when scanned by a handheld scanner

We have an issue when our pdf417 barcodes contain french accented characters é,à,è, etc and are scanned by a handheld scanner.  As a result Montréal is decoded as Montral (the é is dropped).  We are using the Datalogic PowerScan 7000 and a Motorola Symbol DS6608 handheld scanners.  We currently have a ticket open with Datalogic.
The problem does not exist when the barcode is decoded by LC Barocded Forms.Decode.
Talking to someone, they indicated that this is pretty common with handhelds.  However, I did find this old post from lee sutton  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/332743 where he uses a keyboard wedge?
Has anyone had to deal with a similar issue (non-english chars) via handheld?
Can anyone recommend a handheld that does read non-eng characters without the wedge?
Is there something in the encoding from Designer that i can do?

When you're decoding with the hand-held scanner, you'll need to ensure that the decoder itself supports the scanning of extended characters AND if it's a keyboard-wedge scanner, ensure that your keyboard is in French or Canadian-French mode or the simulated typing won't happen.

  • French accent marks in Pages

I'm having trouble inserting French accent marks into my text. I've gone through
the Help list but there does not appear to be an OPTION on my screen. Is there a simple
    way of doing this?

If you are using the US keyboard layout, you do this via Option dead keys. E.g. é is Option/alt + e, release Option key, then e.
    Here is a list:

  • Typing French Accents

How do I type french accents? Do you use some sort of code like with a windows computer? Any help would be greatly apprectiated.
    Thanks

    [Option]+[e] = ´
    [Option]+[`] = `
To place the accent above the vowel, just type the vowel after the accent combination. So for instance:
    [Option]+[e] [e]= é
    [Option]+[e] [a]= á
    [Option]+[`] [e]= è
This page by Tom Gewecke has a complete list of accents and diacritics
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/diacritics.html
Also, you can see all options by showing the Keyboard Viewer and holding [Option] and [Shift]+[Option]
