French accents turn into Chinese characters

I'm using Chrome browser on ML, which is all good, but when I read French documents online, sometimes the accents get replaced by Chinese characters. How do I avoid that? I have set Chinese followed by French and last English as my languages of preferences, which I intend to keep. Also, the same thing happens in Safari as well.

Awesome, thanks!
It's on automatic (Chrome), but apparently it's not capable of determining which coding it was. Problem solved, but fwiw (same on Safari, but I can't see any warnings):

• Letter with accent transformed into chinese ideograms

When I digit a letter with an accent (such as è, ò, à, which are quite common in the Italian vocabulary) into an email, the addressee receive the email with those characters transformed into chinese ideograms.
Is there any solution?

hello,
for question 1) you didn't match Bifocals' expectations. If it had been english for example, it would have been a quite serious problem to have strange characters
for question 2), well I guess Bifocals has no clue on what that email provider is (neither do I anyway).
now, for my part : I think there is a discrepancy between the character encoding you are using and the one that is used by your recipient. When you send an email to yourself with some è à or ò : do you receive them correctly ?
when people send you those characters, do you see them correctly ?

• Links break and turn into Chinese

I'm trying to assist a colleague who usually works with InDesign files off a network drive. Occasionally, she takes a file off the network and stores it on her laptop hard drive so that she can work from home for the night. When she returns to work, she drags and drops it back onto the network drive to update it, basically overwriting what was there. Here's where the problem arises:
Randomly, some of the files' links suddenly become broken in addition to their name becoming Chinese characters (even the link path becomes a single Chinese character instead of a full file path).
My guess about the broken links is because when she saves it at home, InDesign is trying to renew the links but can't find the network drive so they break. This still doesn't explain why only some of the links break, however, and why it does not happen to every file every time.
The Chinese characters are what completely baffle me. No clue how/why this is happening. This has been going on for a few months, and during those months I have reset her preferences and uninstalled/reinstalled InDesign for unrelated issues. This problem has persisted before and after.
InDesign 6.0.3, Windows XP SP3

I've asked my coworker to verify whether or not it's a single INDD file or each one that she does this with - she's going to test it. I tried recreating the situation, but cannot reproduce the problem.
All users are on 6.0.3, although I think that all of the problem files were legacy CS3 INDD files that were subsequently opened in CS4 and resaved as CS4. Can that cause this type of thing to occur?

• All text turns into mappable characters

I downloaded the Outside In Content Access API and I see the same behavior in tademo.exe and my applications. When I try to process a text file, TAReadFirst() and TAReadNext() both return strings containing nothing but asterisks. I understand that the asterisk is coming from SCC_UNMAPPABLECHAR, but I don't understand why the characters aren't mappable in the first place. Why can't TAReadFirst() and TAReadNext() process ASCII text?

• Has anyone else had their google account turned into Chinese?

As of yesterday, chrome shows all my google accounts in chinese adn I can't get rid of it. Anyone else have this issue? Should I be worried?

There were many customers in this same situation, including myself. I had 5 of 6 cancelled, I contacted them immediately. This was a major computer "glitch" that is just getting cleaned up in September. Only 3 of my 5 lines have been reinstated. The issue I had with this was that I would now have to wait 16 months instead of 12 months(May through August) to be able to edge up without additional funds out of my pocket. Or I would have to wait 28 months not the 24 months to be free of the edge agreement. I sent an email to my Verizon area president, within an hour I got a phone call. After an hour on the phone I negoitiated a $75 credit for each line. And then if I choose to early edge in May 2015 I will get an additional credit of $50 towards payment of my device I'm edging up. Since they are unable to adjust the length of the Edge agreement, I started out asking for a $100 credit for each line, which consisted of the $25 per month credit for being month to month in May 2016 to August 2016. Calling them is just a waste of your time, the CSR's can only offer a $50 credit.

• While reading mail, touched screen and content turned into "Chinese"--on server too!

I cannot now read this email! I've also had problems where I accidentally touch the screen and the email is deleted form the iphone, but I am able to get it off the server. This is a huge problem--as essential email from someone whose address I don't have. Thanks.

OK sorry, I figured out what happened. I somehow moved the message to deleted iems on the server. I don't know how I did that but at least I was able to retreive it. Now if you tell me how to delete this message, I will.

• French accent marks in Pages

I'm having trouble inserting French accent marks into my text. I've gone through
the Help list but there does not appear to be an OPTION on my screen. Is there a simple
way of doing this?

If you are using the US keyboard layout, you do this via Option dead keys. E.g. é is Option/alt + e, release Option key, then e.
Here is a list:

Normally that means you are using a French Canadian keyboard layout. Go to system prefs/language & text/input sources and make sure that only the box for US is checked.

• Input Simplified Chinese Characters into Microsoft Powerpoint

Please help!
What's the easiest way to put Simplified Chinese Characters into Microsoft Powerpoint???
I have a mandarin project due like in a week, and I've been trying to find out how to do this on a mac. I've tried the international thing on preferences, but it doesn't work very well, and doesn't even work on powerpoint. Any help would be awesome!!!!
Cheers!

the characters turn out as wierd symbols
You should really have no problem with Office 2004. You might make sure you have the MS Chinese Fonts selected for your text field (SimSun.ttf and PMingLiU.ttf. They appear in the Font menu as 宋体 and 新細明體.)
Send me a screenshot if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).
If problems continue, you can ask in the Chinese-Mac group:

hi
How can I turn my french apple account into an Australian one , to be able to buy a Iphoto book I 've created ?

And you need to set the "Print Products Store" in the iPhoto Preferences "Advanced" to the country you are in. The credit card you will be using with your AppleID needs to be valid in the country your AppleID is registered to. Will you be staying permanently in Australia? Maybe it wuld be simpler to create a second AppleID just for the time of your stay there.

• Help with French Accent Characters Corrupted

Hi, All.
I am developing a Flex Front end connect with Java back-end.
The back-end sends data retrieved from XML file to the Flex
front-end; displays it in an TextArea, and allow user to change.
After user changes the data, hit "Save" button, then Flex sends the
data to the back-end.
I check with the back-end, make sure the data was correct
when sending out to Flex, and the French accented characters gets
corrupted when sending back from Flex. However, in Flex side, this
change cannot be awared. (i.e. The French accents characters
display correctly in Flex, but sending wrong character back). I'm
guessing that might be something related to character sets.
However, I cannot find anywhere to set character sets in
HTTPService. Anybody has idea?

Use Ariel MS Unicode font.

• Problem to insert Chinese Characters(GB3212) into MySQL

I met a problem to insert Chinese Characters (GB3212) into MySQL using Entity Bean (or JPA).
For example, when a hardcoded string "{color:#ff0000}电器me元件{color}" is inserted, it is displayed as "{color:#ff0000}??me??{color}" in MySQL.
The NamedQuery is also not working for Chinese Characters.
The setting are as following:
GlassFish JDBC connection pool: useUnicode=true, charecterEncoding=gb2312
NetBeans IDE: source encoding set to GB2312;
MySql table: the column set to CHARACTER SET gb2312;
Any experts, please give advice
Thanks lot

I didn't noticed that there is a {color:#ff0000}sun-resources.xml{color} file under {color:#ff0000}<ejb project>/server resources{color}.
This file has a pool configuration. This config just overwite the paremeter i added using Admin Console every time a client is lauched. So there are two option to fix this problem.
1. Insert the follwowing two lines into the {color:#ff0000}sun-resources.xml{color}
<property name="characterEncoding" value="gb2312"/>
<property name="useUnicode" value="true"/>
2. delete the everthing in the {color:#ff0000}sun-resources.xml, using Admin Console {color}config your own pool & DataSource
I tried first option & it works.
