Frequent crashes in illustrator CS4 when performing undo

Hello,
I have two employees using two relatively new Windows Vista computers and CS4. They have frequent crashes of illustrator when they undo too quickly, or sometimes just undoing slowly will cause a crash. It is only these two computers that are having the problem. We have 3 other 32 bit computers that never have a problem, it is just the newer 64 bit computers. I tried deleting the preferences but that didn't help at all. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the input. How do I get it to run as a 32 bit program? I changed the compatability mode to Windows XP, but the problem is still occuring. Is this the wrong way of going about it?

Frequent crashes in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign CS6

Installed CS6 Design Standard on Windows 7 64 bit PCs. We get frequent crashes in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Specifically for InDesign it says it was due to an unhandled exception (exception code c0000005) and APPFRAMEWORK.rpln. The PCs are Dell Optiplex 7010 with 16 gigs of ram. Is this a common problem in Win 7 and CS6? What can be done to fix this?

It's not a "common problem" and your info suggests that this is not at all related to Adobe at all. It's some driver crashing. Find the exact system info and crash details:

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor. This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow. What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer. The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

Illustrator CS4 - when I save for web my vectors are pixelated. Help!

I recently updated to CS4 (I know, I'm still behind the times) but ever since when I 'save for web' my vectors appear pixelated. It seems worse when I want a transparent background. My images are for web and this just won't do.
I've read a lot on this and can't seem to fix my problem, but here is what I have tried: Anti-Alias is checked, view > pixel preview, view > overprint preview, object > rasterize, and probably a few other things. If anyone can help me with this issue it would be GREATLY appreciated!! I've attached an image so you can see what I'm talking about. I created this schematic in Illustrator CS4 and saved for web with a transparent background and, as you can see, it appears pixelated everywhere.

Different crash in Illustrator CS3 when saving

Howdy all,
I looked over all the threads about Illustrator crashing upon Save, Save As, Save a Copy, etc., but have not seen this particular problem addressed.
The area that crashes Illustrator EVERY TIME is if I click on the pull-down bar where you can see/change where it's going to be saved, in between the navigation arrows/buttons and the search window.
Anyone else have this problem?

This may be a specific bug in the context of OSX 10.4 and/or a resource problem. Since you used label colors everywhere and there seems a very long list of folders, i could imagine that the dialog can't generate the tree in time. also, if you are saving to a network or have many volumes, something similar may happen. Can you open the folders in other apps? what happens, if you e.g. unplug the network connection (should you use it)? As a minor, I'd try to trash the prefs (Users:Frost:Preferences) to clean out the MRU lists. This should open up any open/save dialogs with the default location (your Documents folder in the Library) and circumvent the issue. On doing so, I'd definitely also reset the layout of the file dialog to not generate previews and hierarchical lists, just the simple path selector...

Illustrator CS4 working slower than CS2

Hi all,
I am working with a PDF file in Illustrator CS4, when I try to scroll with my hand tool it takes forever for the image to refresh and update to the new location. But when I work on the same PDF file in Illustrator CS2, scrolling with the hand tool is fine and the image updates to where I move it to really fast. The I checked the Units & Display Performance in both versions and they appear to be the same. Is there any other thing that I could try to make the PDF update faster in CS4? Thanks in advance.

Hello Pwitman,
You are experiencing a CS4 Critical Bug. This CS4 version came with very serious and critical bugs (like the Memory Bug, Crop Marks, Icon Preview. Text spacing, etc, etc, etc.) that Adobe wont care to fix.
May that is why you have not receive a direct answer. The hole program can crash for one font that the CS4 version considers as a corrupt font (even when other programs or older versions can use the same font).
That is why CS2 is more reliable than the "new" version CS4. Adobe is going from bad to worse. I cannot wait to see CS5's bugs that Adobe wont fix.
I made the mistake of buying CS3; and now I do things in CS2 that CS3 or CS4 cannot do. Yep the old version can do things better than CS3 and CS4.
So where is the CS4 update? Well, Adobe will sell you CS5 as an update.

Problems Installing Adobe Illustrator CS4 on Mac OS X Yosemite

Hi all,
When trying to install Illustrator CS4 on Mac OS X Yosemite, I receive an error: "required resources are missing."
Previously, I had problems using Illustrator CS4 when I upgraded to Yosemite, due to an error with the plugin "photoshopimport.aip." I had attempted to uninstall Illustrator, but the uninstall also gave me errors. I ultimately used the CC Cleaner Tool to remove Illustrator.
Now, however, I can't reinstall Illustrator CS4 either! I use the version provided on Adobe's website, so it's not a problem with a physical DVD.
Any ideas for potential solutions? Many thanks!

I don't have an Adobe installation log, and it's not hidden either. I tried installing Illustrator CS4 again, and I noticed that the install fails while ~80% through an "initializing" step. So, it fails before it even starts to generate an install log! I re-downloaded it and had the same error.
I did notice that I have some errors in the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool when I was removing Illustrator CS4. If you look at my first post, I couldn't use it, or uninstall it, so I simply used the Cleaner Tool to remove it. There are some errors in the Cleaner Tool log, such as this one:

Drop Shadows and Transparency in Illustrator CS4

here's what's happening in Illustrator CS4.
Create a new document
In Attributes, check overprint fill
Add any text
Apply a drop shadow
Dave as Illustrator EPS - during save, set Overprint to "Preserve"
Once saved, you get the dreaded white box behind the drop shadow.
Is there any way to preserve transparency in Illustrator CS4 when applying a drop shadow?

First why are you using eps which does not support transparency except as one bit?
Why not as ai or pdf?
But you can try to use a tiff preview and select transparent there but Macintosh preview should make it so automatially.

Unmanaged File in Illustrator CS4

Hi
Can anyone tell me what is meant by and Unmanaged File - this appears in the status bar in Illustrator CS4 when I create a new document.
I'm thinking it may have something to do with colour management/colour profiles but would appreciate any clarification.

Unmanaged refers to the color management. If you don't assign any specific profiles, the program will use whatever is your default preference, hence the documents are considered unmanaged. It's just a firndly reminder that what you see on screen may not correctly reflect color metrics or settings on otehr machines...

Illustrator CS4 big files

Hello,
I've encountered issues with illustrator cs4 when creating banners or posters of 1mx2m, especially when exporting to jpg it says not enough memory.
There are a number of problems with blurs even on small file sizes such as A4 documents.
I never had these problems with CS3.
System specs
Mac Pro Eight-Core 2.8
Snow Leopard
12gig of Ram
360gb main drive
1Tb secondary drive
Now I don't think its my system and another thing I've noticed when using activity monitor to see how much of the system is used, it's virtually nothing, very low, 0.8%, etc, thats the cpu, physical memory is hardly none, vm isn't much either with many other apps open, it hardly uses any of my system, so where is Illustrator taking it's power from, as its not using much from my system?

Illustrator cs4 outlines fonts from older files

We have a font we use for checks (MICR).
Illustrator cs3 would randomly drop an extra space in the bank account in this font 8% of the time.
Illustrator cs4 when opening files saved from previous versions outlines this font. Which is a bit of a hassle if we need to change the account number.
Any way around this conundrum?

Disable missing glyph protection in the prefs and the respective options in the text palette. You have used some sort of custom text formatting and AI is merely favoring appearance over editability. The type engine has been changed in recent versions, that's why older files may yield different results when being opened...

Illustrator CS4 crashes when Photoshop is open

Hi, I have a problem with Illustrator CS4. Whenever I have Photoshop CS4 open at the same time as it, the program crashes completely, giving no error message to indicate why.
It runs totally fine as long as Photoshop isn't already open, or as long as you don't open Photoshop while it is still running. This is a nightmare when I want to draw certain things in Illustrator and then copy them over to Photoshop.
Anyone else experienced this or have any idea how to fix it?
My system specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU [email protected]
3.5gb Ram
XP service pack 3

Opened up task manager as suggested before opening the programs, and noticed there were more processes running than expected. I ran Spybot Search & Destroy which seems to have picked up a few things ad-aware hadn't, and following a reset, the problem now seems to have disappeared.
Hopefully this is what was causing the problem and it isn't just pure chance that it is working ok for now...

Illustrator CS4 crashes when saving. (OSX)

We currently have a few users at my company that are experiencing problems saving specific documents in Illustrator CS4. Most of the documents that they save work just fine and can be edited on other machines with no flaws. But a handful of the files crash everytime they go to save and is causing quite the headache over here. It also seems to happen when they copy a certain part of the document over to a completely separate one. Currently this is happening on a 10.4.8 & 10.6.1 system along with a single Windows 7 machine. Here are some of the things that I've tried to fix the problem:
-Cleaned OSX Cache
-Repaired permissions
-Deleted the com.adobe.CSXPreferences.plist (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1901414)
-Reinstalled the entire CS4 Suite
-Fully update Mac/Adobe software
-Cleaned/Repaired fonts by using FontDoctor
If anyone has any suggestions on what could be causing these random unexpended problems I would be very thankful,

My Illustrator CS4 Crashes when I try to print.... Can Anybody Print with 10.7 and Illustrator CS4 ?

I had a similar problem. Just installed 10.7.2 and found i couldnt print using my old verison of CS3. So i went to the Adobe page and found the following solution (copied straight from the site).
Issue
Printing from InDesign CS3 or CS4, or Illustrator CS3 or CS4 on Apple OS 10.7 (code named Lion) results in the Adobe application crashing. Acrobat 8.x is also installed, or was installed on the system previously.
Solution
The following workaround can be applied to get these older versions of Illustrator and InDesign to print on this newer operating system. Remove the following files and back them up:
[Hard Drive]/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/en.lproj
[Hard Drive]/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_CN.lproj
[Hard Drive]/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Ja.lproj
[Hard Drive]/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/ko.lproj
[Hard Drive]/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_TW.lproj
Additional information
Creative Suite 3.x and 4.x applications were not designed to function under this newer version of the Mac OS, so some issues can affect them. Upgrading to the latest versions of these applications ensures that you achieve maximum compatibility with the new OS.
