Frequent Freezes & lags under Lion
Hi,
I manage a set of 10 macs :
Mac book pros (15" early 2011 and 15" mid-2010).
iMacs 21.5" mid 2010 and 27" mid 2011.
Mac pros (1.1 version)
We make the migration to Lion 2 weeks ago and since that we only have problems ! We tried upgrades and had lot of problems (macs that could'nt restart, some that restart but with lags and slow functionning...).
So we made clean installs. All the macs started but since we still have a lot of random freezes of computers, random lags.
Most of the time freezes and lags occur under the finder when trying to access disks, network servers or network disk. Time Machine no longuer function since it doesn't see network drives. Of course all the computers under 10.6.8 worked perfectly before. We made the upgrade because we trusted Apple and never had problems like that before.
So i suppose there's something wrong the way Lion manage network communications but i've no proof, just a feeling.
Does anyone has solutions?
Is the soon coming version of 10.7.2 will fix theses problems ?
Thx,
Odo
I have just had a thought (replying to my own thread): could this by caused by my hard disk being full due to TIme Machine local backups? Here is my hard disk utilisation:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk0s2 499G 310G 189G 63% 75765660 46162569 62% /
devfs 192k 192k 0B 100% 650 0 100% /dev
map -hosts 0B 0B 0B 100% 0 0 100% /net
map auto_home 0B 0B 0B 100% 0 0 100% /home
localhost:/7jwxeteKRa3xwWEooLmQnq 499G 499G 0B 100% 0 0 100% /Volumes/MobileBackups
I had ignored this /VolumesMobileBackups folder as I thought it was not *really* using all of the hard disk. But then I just had problem where Word reported that the hard disk was full - this appeared momentarily as a warning on autobackup. I initially panicked but then saw I had 189 G free and Word seemed fine. But then I started wondering: if Time Machine is using the free space for local backups maybe this could be causing my freezes due to the hard disk appearing to be full?
Does anyone know if this /Volumes/MobileBackups can cause a problem where the hard disk appears full to normal applications?

Frequent freezes when I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro/Aug. 09.
I'm becoming very frustrated as my brand new, 2 week old, aluminum MacBook Pro 15in, is frequently freezing. I don't know what to do because I don't know what's causing it. The specifications of my MacBook Pro should be able to multi-task although I rarely ever have more than three programs open at once. Although, I do still see frequent freezes even with one application open.
I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me with my problem?
Thanks in advance!I'm not sure why or how this might've helped, but it's the only thing that I did recently that seems to have fixed the issue. About a week ago I decided to keep the Activity Monitor open so that I could see what was happening when things started freezing. Turns out that the "data written" graph under the 'Disk Activity' section was maxing itself out each time things started freezing up.
I tried to do a disk repair withing OS X but was told to reboot it. I did that, fixed some disk permissions and then was told that the disk itself didn't need repairing.
I rebooted after that and have been going crash/freeze free for at least a week since then. I have no idea if it was really what caused things to start working again or if it was a fluke, but here's what I did:
1) Placed the OS X CD in my drive and rebooted.
2) Ran the Disk Utility application and clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions'.
3) It reported some issues, so then I clicked 'Repair Disk Permissions', where it fixed them.
4) Just to see how things were, I clicked 'Verify Disk' where I was told that everything looks okay.
Seems to be working great since then! Good luck! -
I am running Safari 5.1.7 on 10.6.8 and experiencing frequent freezes and crashes, how do I solve this problem?
Hal HarrisThe best way is to post the crash log next time it crashes. That will contain specific information that will help find the problem. Logs are cryptic but there are people here who can make some sense of them.
I'm running 5.1.7 under 10.6.8 on both my iMac and MacBook Pro and it is completely stable. However I have no extensions installed. Incompatible extensions are a common source of Safari instability -
2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing
I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time. It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive. My workload hasn't fundamentally changed. Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees. Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding. Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal. There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping. Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low. (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
Here are the apps I typically run:
- NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
- Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
- Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
- kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
- WindowServer also reports using 280MB
- various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard. But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough. Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be. I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes. (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
Are other people having similar trouble? Any suggested remedies? Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion. Actually, quite a few things have broken. Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs. But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much. But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
pig. The longer you are using it the more memory it
gobbles up.
In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine. May
help since it is a huge collection of files. But there have been
issues reported with Time Machine and Lion. I don't
use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
seperate data backup strategy. Also, in Spotlight
preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
my Windows VM folders, for same reason. Unless you really
need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
of disk access time.
For solving airport issues check this article:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
can.
Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up. -
Frequent freezes since update to 10.6.8
Hi all,
Thanks for you help in advance
I updated to 10.6.8 and first had a problem with the dock using 100% CPU, I worked around this using the fix provided here http://bit.ly/mPCVii
The thing is, I have nother problem now, every once and a while (20 minutes, 40 minutes, etc ...) one app hangs, so I switch to a new app or go to the dock or try to force quit it and the whole computer freezes for 20-30 seconds and then eveyrthing comes back to normal.
This happens whether I've got 1 or 10 apps launched and it also happens whether I'm on a simple app like TextEdit, Chrome or Safari or more powerful ones like Parallels, Photoshop, etc ... which makes me beleive that this isn't an app oriented issue.
Also, after the update to 10.6.8 and after the Airport Update, I had to repair permissions for these, they all got repaired using disk utility except for one which is the remote desktop agent (ARDagent), myabe this is linked sonce there was a security issue in Leopard 2 years ago with this.
I've also tried resetting PRAM and rebooting in Safe Mode.
Thanks for your help gents.
Kind Regards,
Arnaud
MacBook Pro 2011 15'
2 GHz Intel Core i7
8Gb RAM
512Gb crucial SSDArnaud,
I am also experiencing the frequent freezes and the 100% CPU usage since the upgrade. I looked online and fixed the CPU usage with the fix mentioned in the thread but still have the freezes.
I just verified my permissions and i had a bunch issues. I repaired them and now they're reporting ok. I'm going to try resetting SMC and I hope that takes care of it.
I read your comment about the SATA II drives and i wanted to let you know i don't think it's that. I had two SATA 2 drives in my macbook and upgraded to 2 SATA 3 drives two days ago. I thought the freezes were related to one of my drives but now i not sure. I don't remember having any problems with my old SSDs but then again i can't remember if i upgraded to 10.6.8 when i had those in my system. I guess what i'm saying is that it appears the problem occurs regardless of if you have SATA 2 or SATA 3 SSDs in the system.
Something that i found odd was some of my xbench scores. Before i fixed the CPU problem i received about a 600 for my SSDs. Right after i fixed it went down to about 440. I did the permission fix and it went back up to 500 then right back down to 440s. I don't know if that has anything to do with the upgrade but it's definitely odd...
I'm half tempted to reinstall OSX not upgrade to 10.6.8. I could see that stops the freezes stop and if the Xbench results go back to the 600s.... If not, Lions only a week away. Maybe that will fix everything. Hopefully someone has some suggestions. If i decide to reinstall ill post my findings. -
Selecting sidebar actions under Lion very slow
Under Snow Leopard, when I would move between some sidebard items like iPhone, iPad, or the apps list, my system was very quick. I synch my devices very frequently to keep my business calendar updated all the time so switching is happening all the time.
Under Lion, the store, the library items, in the sidebard all switch very fast. But selecting the iPhone, the iPad or the list of apps in the library is incredibly slow. Timed, its 12 to 13 seconds every time they are selected before the change takes place. I even get the spinning beachball every time. And, same thing reselecting, its not just the first time.
Is this unusual? Any suggestions appreciated. It just seems very unusual that this one app would have some specific things like this suddenly get so very slow.
Thanks!Hello, the problem seems to be more specific about my use of mod_auth_kerb with apache. The authentication seems to take quite some time.
Greetings,
Michel -
Aperture running very slow under Lion
Lift and stamp adjustments takes forever and Processing of images takes hours under Lion OS.....may have to switch back to Snow Lepard
My Aperture 3 is medium fast after a reboot (8-core MacPro, 6 GIG), but starts to get really slow after the swap file size gets above 100 meg). I then need to reboot BEFORE Aperture freezes up on me.
A3/64 was FAST under Snow Leopard... still got slow once in a while. It is happening way more often under Lion.

'11 MacBook Air Freezing w/Mountain Lion
I have a 2011 MacBook Air (13", 4GB) that was rock solid with Lion for a year. However, ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've been experiencing frequent freezes/lockups.
Sometimes, my Menu bar will freeze, and I'll get the spinning beachball, then the system will completely freeze requiring me to power down.
Other times, the machine will just instantly freeze, requiring a power down.
Still, in another annoying situation, I'll close the lid on my laptop while plugged in, come back a few hours later, and the machine won't wake up. No screen activity, not even any light noticeable through the Apple logo on the back of the screen. NOTHING.
It's getting to be to the point where I don't want to use my MBA anymore and try to do as much work as possible on my iPad.
Nothing has changed software/hardware wise since the upgrade to Mountain Lion. I even tried disabling PowerNap, but that didn't work. The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
My Imac 27 keeps freezing since Mountain Lion installed
Is anyone else have freezing problems I have 8gbram i7 2.8ghz no help from tech support.
Morning, glad things are going ok .
I haven't re-installed Sophos yet. The Sophos forum are saying there's still an issue, so until I hear that they have resolved it, I'm leaving it uninstalled.
Under Lion, it used to run in the background with minimal resources being used. I hope Sophos can get the issue resolved ASAP for Mountain Lion. -

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.
I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation. I will post my computer's 'specs' below. I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store. The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed. I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app. I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there. That fixed the problem. For about three or four days. From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument). My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out. That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said. They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board. This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion. Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install. This helped for a day or two, and happened again. So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install. I got my computer back last night. Now, I am not saying that didn't help. Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself). I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours. Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas? Or guarenteed fixes? I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people. Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome. Especially DIY fixes. (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Maybe you have an old version of Melodyne or a demo version? I'd remove it and see if that fixes it anyway - not entirely sure, maybe someone else has more of a clue - there must be a solution anyway, so this response will take it back to the top. -
My mac os frequently freezes for one to two minutes at a time. I have uninstalled and reinstalled flashplayer 11.3 several times because I sometimes get a crash report on flashplayer. I would like other suggestions as to what more I can do.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Epson 3880 no longer prints under Lion
My Epson 3880 printer was working well under Snow Leopard but after updating to Lion on my MacBook Pro a few months ago I haven't yet been able to get the printing to work. The printer is connected directly via USB. If I unplug the printer from my MacBook Pro and plug it into my MacPro then it works normally. I have tried deleting the printer and reloading it. Software Update is all up to date. 10.7.3. I didn't get any help whatsoever from Epson.
I have tried printing from a variety of applications (FileMaker Pro, TextEdit, Adobe Reader, Photoshop etc.) but always the same problem. When I try to print, things seem to go normally until I press "print". That is, the printer dialogue box comes up normally and I can select the printer, paper size, options, etc. However, the print dialogue box looks different, simpler with less options. I can't tell if this is normal under Lion or if it indicates something wrong with the printer driver.
The printer shows up as "connected". After I press "print" the progress box that usually appears just flashes on very briefly and disappears. Normally this box shows for at least a few seconds. Then, when nothing happens, I check the printer monitor icon in the dock. There is a red number showing a new page is ready to print. But nothing happens. On the printer monitor box it shows "Printer Ready" but down in the jobs list it shows the name of the document waiting to be printed and under "status" is says "error". If I click "Resume" the status changes to "printing" then I get a couple of very brief messages - too fast to read, and then they disappear and status returns to "error".
If I click "job info" I get a bunch of stuff but this message looks like the important one "/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Filter/pdftopdf.app/Contents/MacOS/pdfto pdf failed".
I can connect to the Epson 3880 when it is wired to the MacPro as a network printer and I can print but I can't seem to get the same printer options selections. I can get the basic ones but not the important ones for this printer - just generic ones.
Does anobody have any suggestions for me to try. I have read through a number of other printer related issues with Lion but most are with network printing or wireless printing.Brian Townsend wrote:
Well, I deleted the printer and the Epson printer files and restarted. Then I plugged in the Epson 3880 printer and added it in the print & scan box. It said I neededd software to sue this printer so I went to Software Update but no Epson software appeared on the list. I installed the latest driver from Epson.
You did not state but after you installed the latest driver from Epson, did you go back to Print & Scan and delete all instance of the Epson printer and the add the printer. The Epson 3880 is "on", yes?
On a new MB Pro with OS 10.7.4, the latest Epson SPro 3880 driver and the printer on... In Print & Scan, I can click and hold down the + button and the pop down menu shows an option to select the nearby printer EpsonStylusPro3880-1EAD55 to add. If I choose Add other Printer or Scanner, the Add Printer window opens and the Default tab lists EpsonStylusPro3880-1EAD55 as Bonjour and EpsonStylusPro3880-1EAD55 (IP) as EPSON TCPIP. The latter is because I set the printer with a static IP address. I print to the Epson 3880 via WiFi.
Anyway, if you try adding the printer and "Print Using" shows Generic PostScript Printer, click on that itself and choose "Select Printer Software..." from the drop down menu. A Printer Software window will open. Find the Epson 3880 in that list. If it is not there, go back and choose "Other". On my computer the path to the Epson 3880 PPD is: HD/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/EPSON Spson Stylus Pro 3880.gz
When I try to print, I select the printer from the printer list and a printer dialogue box comes up, but not the normal Epson one. It was a simplified generic printer dialogue box lacking the usual advanced Espon printer features, such as seeing if photo black or matte black ink is selected. So it still doesn't work. Any other ideas?
Either that's the window for Generic PostScript or if it is for the Epson printer, at the bottom there is a button "Show Details" (to the right of the PDF button). If the details show, that button will show as "Hide Details."
Hope this helps. -
My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, runs fine under Lion.
My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, even though it was originally written for Snow Leopard. It runs fine on my Dev machine under Lion. But when I test it on my Snow Leopard Mac Mini the app starts but the window does not appear. Going to file, new window does nothing. My depolyment target is set to 10.6. Is there something I did to make my app lose Snow Leopard compatiblty?
Does your application use features only available in Lion? Are you getting any console logs?
