Frequent freezing - a possible (temporary) solution?

I recently purchased a used dual 1.42 ghz G4, that was running Jaguar (OS X 10.2) and immediately purchased the Mac Box Set with OS X 10.5.6, iWork, and iLife. I was THRILLED with my purchase... for about 40 minutes. Then my system froze up completely. I restarted, and again... everything was great... for about 40 minutes. Frozen again. I searched high and low for a solution, and nothing I tried worked.
From what I had read, I assumed that it was a hard drive issue. (I have 3 hard drives... the original 120 MB, a 250 MB, and a 400 MB.) I ran a few different HD utility programs, all reported that the drives were fine.
Last night, after rebooting for the 4th time, I had a flash of inspiration. I changed the energy saving setting to NOT shut down the hard drives when possible. Not a single freeze since then. Until a better, working alternative is found (or I get a new hard drive) I'm happy with this.
Please reply and let me know if this works for you... or if you have better ideas!

The problem started when I installed 10.5. Keeping the hard drives "awake" has been the only working solution I've found so far.

  • Touchpad touchscreen problems (erratic behavior/not responding correctly/etc) temporary solution.

I bought a HP Touchpad about a month or two after it came out. It worked pretty much as you'd expect it to until some time ago. I started getting a problem where the screen would go crazy and not respond correctly to my touch inputs. Web pages would jump all over the place, cards would zoom out, etc, in other words, they would behave erratically. After some testing I noticed that certain areas  of the touchscreen would NOT respond at all to inputs while others would make the screen go crazy like I mentioned previously. I looked for information on the web to see if other people where having the same problem and found reports of the same behavior. Unfortunately there where no solutions offered. At that point I tried turning on and off the Touchpad which did not resolve the problem. My next step was to try to reinstall the OS with WebOS Doctor, but I read a post where the user reported similar behavior and reinstalling with WebOS Doctor didn't fix the problem. Needless to say I was bummed out since I figured it was a hardware problem with the touchscreen. After more testing I found a temporary solution to the problem which seems to suggest that the probem could be software. The solution when you get the problem is to hold down the power button and the home button at the same time and keep them pressed until the screen shuts down and the touchpad restarts. Once the OS comes back up it works like it is supposed to until you get the next episode of screen epilepsy. At that point you need to do the procedure again and it will fix the problem temporarily. Usually the fix lasts for a few days in my case. The fix also solves other problems I have with the touchpad. Problems like, videos not playing fluidly or freezing every few seconds although the sound plays fine (youtube), sound gets messed up (sounds are played in a robot like pitch), and others. If anybody has questions or other suggestions let me know, I will answer the as best as I can.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

I think the YouTube and sound problems are separate from the other erratic behaviour.  Recently my touchpad won't play YouTube videos beyond certain points, starting a few seconds in possibly due to the advertising pop-ups - I can skip forwards, but that means I miss crucial parts.  My sound also goes 'robot-like' until a reboot, which is incredibly annoying!  Your touchscreen problems may be specific to your device - try going to Device Info / Diagnostics and see if that tells you anything.

  • Windows 7 frequently freezes during games & (end of) videos w/ bootcamp 3.1

    Hi,
when running Windows 7 via bootcamp 3.1 on my new iMac (i5, 27", ATI Radeon 4850 HD) it keeps frequently freezing (completely!) when running videos (e.g., at the end of 5-10 youtube videos) and especially when running 3d games (e.g., while switching to an in-game menu after 10-20min gaming). Even though, the Windows event logging unfortunately has no entries before the freeze, I'm certain its an ATI driver issue. Hence, I tried all drivers available or suggested in discussions, but without any success. Concretely, I tried:
    - ATI 8.661.0.0 (driver date 23-09-2009, bootcamp 3.0) => freezing
    - ATI 8.681.0.0 (driver date 24-11-2009, bootcamp 3.1) => freezing & color banding
    - ATI 8.732.0.0 (driver date 04-05-2010, www.ati.com, mobility driver) => freezing
Does anybody has a working solution, a workaround, or another idea what else I could try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mario

Don't know about the earlier poster, but that is exactly what I did. I don't know if you can download the ATI drivers from ATI without also installing Catalyst. I definitely got it as part of my download, and even tried fiddling around with the settings in there, but my systems still freezes randomly

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Temporary solution for DNG support under 10.5.5

Those of you who use DNG files (ie. because you are using different brand of camera's like I do) certainly have noticed that DNG became unsupported after their upgrade to MacOSX 10.5.5.
A temporary solution that worked for me can be found here:
    http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2353.0.html
Hope Apple and the Aperture team will fix this problem asap.

So you need to turn on the bg mode(2.4GHz) or a mode(5.8GHz)! Try it.
do you have any detailed instruction of this?

  • Frequent freezes when I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro/Aug. 09.

I'm becoming very frustrated as my brand new, 2 week old, aluminum MacBook Pro 15in, is frequently freezing. I don't know what to do because I don't know what's causing it. The specifications of my MacBook Pro should be able to multi-task although I rarely ever have more than three programs open at once. Although, I do still see frequent freezes even with one application open.
I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me with my problem?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure why or how this might've helped, but it's the only thing that I did recently that seems to have fixed the issue. About a week ago I decided to keep the Activity Monitor open so that I could see what was happening when things started freezing. Turns out that the "data written" graph under the 'Disk Activity' section was maxing itself out each time things started freezing up.
I tried to do a disk repair withing OS X but was told to reboot it. I did that, fixed some disk permissions and then was told that the disk itself didn't need repairing.
I rebooted after that and have been going crash/freeze free for at least a week since then. I have no idea if it was really what caused things to start working again or if it was a fluke, but here's what I did:
    1) Placed the OS X CD in my drive and rebooted.
    2) Ran the Disk Utility application and clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions'.
    3) It reported some issues, so then I clicked 'Repair Disk Permissions', where it fixed them.
    4) Just to see how things were, I clicked 'Verify Disk' where I was told that everything looks okay.
Seems to be working great since then! Good luck!

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET

    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

You could use your original install disc and boot from the disc, run Disc Utility and do a repair disk.

    Hal Harris

The best way is to post the crash log next time it crashes. That will contain specific information that will help find the problem. Logs are cryptic but there are people here who can make some sense of them.
I'm running 5.1.7 under 10.6.8 on both my iMac and MacBook Pro and it is completely stable. However I have no extensions installed. Incompatible extensions are a common source of Safari instability

  • New iMac Frequent Freezes

Please Help: I have a 6 week old new Intel Duo iMac and been getting frequent freezes that require hard restarts. It started when I tried to print a document into a PDF file. Then after 2 hard restarts I could not log IN into my account. AppleCare recommended reintalling OSX and archiving. My IT department did this because I am not allowed to have the OSX disks. However, after this, the problems continue. Sometimes when opening a new application. I ran DiskUtility and everything is fine. Can I be runing out of memory? I have 2GB of SDRAM... The whole problem started the same day I did the last security update...
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: iMac4,1
    CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
    Number Of Cores: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
    L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB

Check these threads and if you still think it is hardware, there are lots of Intel Macs out there that are busted.

And there are more... Many people are spending numerous hrs tryin to fix this mess. For all (including me) it seems to work if you reinstall the system and avoid the last QT and Security updates. However, I still cant use Acrobat 7 because it freezes the iMac.

  • MacBook Pro frequent freezes problem

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro frequently freezes despite very light use. I took it to a "genius" today, but he was not very helpful. Actually, it froze again right at the apple store while they were checking it. The log showed some errors from Quicksilver right before the freeze and they suggested disabling Quicksilver for a while. At the same time they said that Quicksilver is "solid" and should not cause any serious problems. They also recommending deleting flash plugins, but admitted that it was unlikely that a flash plugin was causing freezes.
Nothing came up during hardware tests, and I already did a clean reinstall of the OS (twice).
I would appreciate any suggestions. The Macbook Pro is 6 months old, 17in, 2.66 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM. There is 300+ GB of free space on the hard disk.
    Thanks

I had similar issues. I formatted, did a clean install, and ran software update to make sure everything was up to date. Then I logged in for the first time, ran handbreak and 6 vlc windows and it froze within 10 minutes. This is most likely not caused by Quicksliver or any other software. You should register your complaints in this thread to keep them all together:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768351&tstart=0
Then you should call apple care to register your complaint. I've scheduled a call for tomorrow.

  • Any temporary solutions to the washed out colors issue?

**Note: I posted this in the Boot Camp forum, but I received no response. So, I'll give this forum a try.**
I have a question about Windows XP and washed out colors on the display. I hear that there are some display driver issues with the new unibody MacBook Pros when using either XP or Vista on a Boot Camp partition. Just to be clear, when I say "washed out colors", I mean to say that the colors have a blue-ish, faded look to them. I know that this issue lies with the type of color gamma (or whatever it's called) that Windows uses versus what Mac OS X uses. So, now for the 2 main questions I want to ask:
1)Is there any permanent solution to this weird color problem?
    And, if not, then:
2)Is there any temporary solution, such as maybe a program that can apply a color profile for you? For example, I read on another forum that programs like LUT Manager (http://www.exactscan.com/lutmanager/) can help apply an .icc color profile that you have in Mac OS X and apply it to Windows (you can even have it apply it automatically when you start up Windows). Do any of you know something that might be even better?
Also, how do you make an ICC color profile in Mac OS X without actually applying it?

Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? I'll be glad to elaborate further if necessary...

  • N97 / Gmail / Nokia Messaging - temporary solution

Hi, Was having the same problems as a lot of people with Nokia messaging only occasionally syncing with gmail or simply not syncing at all.
I've found a temporary solution which is working great.
I've set up an email account with my ISP (hopefully you have a spare to use ro can maybe try a different free server) [email protected] and set gmail to forward all incoming email to this new address while keeping email in the gmail inbox.
I've now set nokia messaging to use my new email address - I now have emails arriving constantly.
Not a fix just a workaround I know.
My gut feeling is there is some intrinsic problem between Nokia and Gmail that is affecting some accounts that needs to be fixed. I hope it happens. I'd love to be able to simply connect to my gmail account and have it working.
    Cheers Mick

  • TS1717 I can't open iTunes. I'd been experiencing frequent freezes when I was using the iTunes store the past few days. What can I do to open iTunes?

? I can't open iTunes at all. When I hit the icon, it lights up but doesn't engage to open the program. The past few days I'd been experiencing frequent freezes when using the iTunes Store. Any ideas for how to open iTunes?

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room.  With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account.  While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases".  If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device.  Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!!  Enjoy...

  • Frequent Freezes

I posted this same problem before without any rectification. I experience frequent freezes and finally located a problem in crash reporter when the report noted "unrecoverable usb crash on port 20." I have two usb mouses, Kensington turbo that is hard wired; a Logitech wireless (bluetooth) and an application called Maximice. I use the Kensington when I do work at home and use the logitech when I perform using Keynote (I use it to go from one slide to another during the presentation). I thought originally that the kensington was the culprit but couldn't prove it. When I go to Activity Monitor, I notice that two mouse applications plus MaxiMice (a scrolling curser app) are all loaded. I'm beginning to wonder if they are all conflicting. I still believe that the Kensington is the problem since I had the problem before I loaded Logitech. It doesn't happen in any particular application and it has happened during playback of a DVD. Any Ideas?

  • ISight Green Screen Problem: Temporary SOLUTION

If you have been experiencing a "green screen" with iSight in Photo Booth (and camera not working in other programs...there is a temporary solution.
The solution is to SHUT DOWN your machine (NOT just restart). Turn your machine back on....your iSight will start working agian. Now this may be extremely annoying but the best thing yo u can do is continue to harrass Apple until they release a software update for this problem.
    Hope this information helps.

I have a NEW (refurbished) mac!If your Mac is VERY new, you can contact the retailer who sold it to you and ask them to fix it. This is particularly important if you have ANY other problems with your refurb'd unit.
If you want to try on your own first, here are some ideas you can pursue.
If you performed the update to 10.4.6, did you use the Combo Updater and a method like How I Update My Mac OS X? If not, applying the Combo with that technique may help you.
When you got your new Mac, did you erase the hard drive and reinstall the software before you started using it? Over the years, this has become part of my standard practice for assuring Macintosh System Stability.
Finally, in addition to Apple Article 302679, Apple Article 302520 also deals with green screen issues. You can check that.
