Frequent Kernel Panics w/ core duo mac mini

I have been having kernel panics left and right. It's random... meaning it seems to happen whenever it wants to do anything er.. out of the ordinary.
- It's crashed on me frequently when trying to view the dashboard
- It's crashed on me frequently after using Front Row
- It's crashed on me when it wants to sync with .Mac
- It's crashed on me when opening System Preferences
I think for the most part, I'd like to say that the crashes happens when it's waking up a hardware device or the sort. Of course, that's just pure speculation at the moment. Otherwise, it's obviously not so random frequent event.
It rarely crashes, if I open all these apps, close it, and do multiple tasks. The symptoms seem to be more like i.e. The system has been idle for a while, I suddenly call on the dashboard and Wham!! kernel panic.
In another case, the system is rather idle. I decide to check out system preferences. Again, a kernel panic.
.Mac wants to sync after the systems been idel... again kernel panic.
Anyway, in short, it seems so far this kernel panic happens after the system has been idle for a while.
Mac Mini w/ mini-optical sound out connected, display is hooked via DVI to HDMI cable, USB 2.0 external hard drive connected, Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse, and a digital cable box connected via Firewire.
So, why all the kernel panics? Anyone else having frequent kernel panics.

Here's are the last three entries in the panic.log.

  • Core Duo mac mini vs. Core 2 Duo iMac

I am interested in getting a new mac. I would like some advice from others about some of the new models. I do a lot of iPhoto with my Nikon D50 and iMovie and iDVD. I am assuming that a new Core Duo mac mini will be a significant upgrade from my current G4 mini, but I am wondering how much more performace I will see by getting a Core 2 Duo iMac. I am just not sure if I will notice the increased L2 cache or the better video card. again, there is nothing professional, but would like good performance. I am currently using a 19" Dell monitor that I am happy to keep, but will unload it if I get the Imac - not a problem.

The Core Duo Mac Mini lacks the graphics processor, and the RAM upgradeability of the iMac. Also it lacks the Firewire 800 you can get on the 24" model, and the larger hard drive capacity you can get on the iMac build to order. The Mac Mini internally can only get up to 200 GB internally, and with build to order, 500 GB can be put in the 17" and 20" iMac, and 750 GB in the 24" iMac. You'll find hard drive capacity a must in movie production, and the speed of the hard drive will be better. I'd even partition that hard drive to keep space for temporary files on movie projects. No need to get rid of your Dell display when getting the iMac as the iMac supports dual-display with a stretched desktop across both displays! Apple claims a 39% increase in speed for the MacBook Pro Core2Duo which was just released over a similarly configured MacBook Pro CoreDuo. Since iMovie and iDVD will be able to take advantage of the processor, I'd go for the Core2Duo in a heartbeat.

  • Will iTunes 10.7 play my 720p HD movies on my Core Duo Mac mini that are currently on my iTunes movies playlist and playing perfectly fine in iTunes 10.6.3?

Will iTunes 10.7 play my 720p HD movies on my Core Duo Mac mini that are currently on my iTunes movies playlist and playing perfectly fine in the older iTunes 10.6.3?
Please let me know so I do not update to iTunes 10.7 and lose the ability to playback my 720p HD collection from my Core Duo Mac Mini to my Apple TV.
    In the requirements it says:
    • To play 720p HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras, a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 1GB of RAM is required.

Performed the AppleTV update yesterday.  Haven't had a problem since...though it's only been one day.  Am I just hopelessly optimistic to think that AppleTV just needed to be updated to match iTunes and iOS for home sharing and airplay?
    Fingers crossed...

  • Core Duo Mac Mini - NO Sound issue

I have a Core Duo Mac Mini and I have an issue where my sound doesn't work in various applications including iChat (interface sounds of iChat only; audio for chats works OK), Windows Media player & Flash Player.
While re-booting SOMETIMES restores the [interface] sound to iChat, the same cannot be said for WMP & Flash players. I have uninstalled Flash Player and reinstalled the beta universal application from Macromedia and I still cannot hear any Flash based sounds.
Even when I have no [interface] sounds in iChat, I have normal system interface sounds such as alert sounds and volume level alert.
Anyone running an Intel based Mac have similar issues?
    Thanks!

  • Is the superdrive in the Core duo Mac mini and the G4 mac mini the same ?

I have a G4 mac mini with a busted super drive and someone is selling a core duo mac mini with ram and a super drive but a bad logic board.
Is the super drive the same in both machines ?
How tough is it to swap it to the other ?
I've done some Hard drive installations and ram installations using the macfixit guide but don't want to bust it I'm certainly not Mr Fix it.
    Thanks in advance.

    They are not the same.
Compare the PowerPC Mac Mini specs from Archive.org:
"Optional SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-RW discs at up to 2x speed, writes DVD+R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD+RW discs at up to 2.4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed"
To the Intel Mac Mini specs today:
"Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 2.4x speed, writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed, writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed"

  • Aperture 1.1 on core duo mac mini...

    Hi -
I'm wondering if anyone knows if the universal binary version of Aperture will run on the Core Duo mac mini with the Intel graphics chip...
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi -
I'm wondering if anyone knows if the universal binary
version of Aperture will run on the Core Duo mac mini
    with the Intel graphics chip...
I don't think it is supported, but some of us are going to try and see how it works. I'm not expecting much though as Aperture relies on the video card more than anything for performance, and the Mac mini video card is much weaker than the ones in the Macbook Pro or Intel iMac.

  • Will 1.86ghz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini run the IPhone SDK?

I kinda asked this as a follow up in another thread. But I really should have asked it in a separate thread here.
Will a 1.86ghz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini run the IPhone SDK?
Additionally, it comes with 10.4 and IPhone needs 10.5.4 or better. Can I download and upgrade to 10.5.4 free from Apple or will I have to purchase the upgrade?
    Jerry

The hardware is more than sufficient. You will have to buy 10.5 (Apple does not have upgrade pricing).

  • Frequent restarts due to kernel panic crashes, late 2012 mac mini, paceapp kext?

Every time I start my (refurbished 6,2) mac mini after it's been off for a while (typically overnight), it restarts immediately during startup and I get the "your computer has restarted because of a problem" error message.  I can restart it without problems at that point, it all works as designed.  Until I leave it for several hours again, then I get the restart problem.
I'm concerned it has to do with the com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1 kext, which clearly isn't designed for Mountain Lion...  Or is it to do with the 16 GB of RAM I installed?  I checked the RAM with rember, came back clean.  Can anyone help me with this?

If the RAM was added after you bought the computer, have you tried reverting to the chips that were in the computer when you first bought it? From one reliable source the chip nomenclature is as follows:
    2 - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM {to 16GB}
There may be a software you've installed that could cause a kernel panic.
Sometimes the RAM specs of products installed are similar but not correct in an upgrade, or in rare instances there may be a defect. I could not tell from the report information you posted above if the matter was related to RAM, however.
    Memory specs & upgrade:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5475
Was there some other change you'd made to the computer, on or about the time this symptom started? Any third-party software you'd installed at a time the issue started should be seriously looked into and if needed, use their uninstaller to be rid of it.
You should detach or unplug external devices not necessary in the troubleshooting of the Mini, then proceed to see if the report or condition changes. Could be a defective peripheral and not an internal component. Also, if you can't get past this matter, you may have to see about getting an appointment with a Genius or product specialist at an Apple Store, or authorized reseller with factory trained service staff.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 10.7.5 causes kernel panics!!! Mac Mini issue?

After updating my Mac Mini (late-2009, 2.53GHz core 2 duo, 4GB ram, no mods) to Lion 10.7.5, the message "You need to restart your computer. Shut down by holding the power button down, then restart" appears when shutting down, spawning a kernel panic. These have been submitted to Apple through the normal method. There are no other symptoms, but irrespective of this my Mac does not shut down correctly under 10.7.5 and kernal panics should not be happening. I've reverted to 10.7.4 now which solves the problem.
Other users have reported this, such as 'stuckis' on a MacMini 2011, 2,5 Core i5 - this user even downloaded the update a second time and the problem reappeared.
Given it happens on different model Mac Minis, I think the update is the source of the problem (at least on Mini models). Have any other users seen this issue??
Apple's track record isn't great at the moment - I had to uninstall Mountain Lion because it was causing major kernel panics when attempting to shut down my Mac (probably caused by the use of a Samsung TV as a monitor - if I was cynical I'd say it was deliberate by Apple over their ongoing mobile phone battles), so upgrading to ML at the moment isn't a solution.

Yep, read most of those when trying to sort a similar problem when I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I managed to narrow down the problem a bit, but given it only happened after the upgrade (and nothing else had changed) it was almost certainly something in Mountain Lion that caused it. As it turns out it looks like it was related to using a Samsung TV as a monitor or possibly nvidia drivers under ML. I've love to know if these issues have been resolved, because I thought ML was excellent.
That said, given ML is already up to version .3 it seems to me there must have been a number of issues with it, and maybe these have sneaked down into Lion now? As for Lion on my Mac, downgrading to 10.7.4 fixes the problem, no more KPs, so as far as I can see it has to be OS related.
The impression I get is that recent OS releases from Apple have not been tested very well, particularly with slightly older models such as mine. I've always thought the one of the good things about Apple was the longevity of their machines (I was using a perfectly good 2001 G4 Powermac before I got my Mac Mini in 2009!!).
Rant over! I'll read the tutorial you've kindly provided the link for and perhaps try updating again...

  • Core Duo Mac Mini video lag?

Hello all my name is Jose I recently acquired a 2006ish Mac Mini that my friend gave to me that has a Core Duo T2300 1.66Ghz processor, Intel GMA 950 64MB of video memory, and 2GB of RAM. Its connected to my 46" HDTV and is being used as HTPC for Youtube and a bunch of other things. My problem is that the other night my mom wanted to watch her favorite spanish tv show on Univision.com and once I entered full screen whatever we were watching became choppy and laggy. My Flash Player Version is up to date (10.3.183.5) and I can watch Youtube videos like Top Gear in Full HD (1080p) that don't lag what so ever, video is silky smooth. So what do you guys think is up with it?  You're guys help is greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

If you open Finder and click on your home folder, the one with the little house for an icon, you should see listed all of the folders in your home folder.
You should see a folder called Desktop, which contains everything on your Desktop.
If you left click on Desktop to high light and then depress the Command + I keys that should open a pane with information about your Desktop folder.
Please let us know what it says for the Size:

  • Increase fan speed on Intel Core Duo Mac mini?

I have owned a PowerPC G4 based Mac mini for some time now. It's been (and continues to be) a great little computer.
Just recently I bought the Intel Core Duo version. It too seems like a great little computer.
However, I've got to admit that the amount of heat the Intel version puts out is staggering. The internal hard disk claims to be running around 119-126 degrees Fahrenheit. I put a thermometer near the vent on the back and it topped out at 120 degrees F. The bottom pad is nearly too hot to touch. This computer is running a distributed computing project.
Far be it from me to second guess Apple's engineers, but the fan is never turning very fast at all on the Intel mini. It is running, though, and appears to be doing as it was designed to do. (I've seen my PowerPC machine get to rip-roaring during the summer.)
Running the Apple Hardware Test shows that the Intel mini's fan can speed up quite a bit. I'd like to know if there's a way to request a higher fan speed outside of the Hardware Test. I know I could pop the thing open and just "forget" to reconnect the fan speed sensor wire to command the fan to run at full speed, but I don't want to invalidate the warranty.
Maybe I'm being silly, but I prefer that my computers be moving enough air from them to keep things cool regardless of noise level.

The smcFanControl utility is what ended up solving this problem. Turning up the fan speeds just a little bit resulted in a very noticeable cool-down.

  • Bluetooth Error on early 1.66Ghz Core Duo Mac Mini model.

Something really weird that wasn't really happening until a couple weeks ago... I can connect to a bluetooth enabled cell phone just fine... I can even transfer some small files back and forth okay, BUT... if I attempt to transfer something big, like a music file... a 3MB mp3 per say... it will start the transfer and after a few seconds, sometimes longer... the error comes "The Hardware bluetooth is no longer available" ...
    NO CLUE!!!
Anybody around having the same problem or had maybe?
    Thanks a lot and PEACE!
    Gui.
Mac Mini 1.66Ghz Code Duo, 160Gb SATA, 2Gb SODDIM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If this mini was bought new in May 2007 it is still under warranty, and you should contact Apple. If you have an Apple store in your area you can make an appointment at the Genius Bar and have it looked at. If not, then simply call Apple and describe the symptoms. If they can't walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the problem, they'll arrange for the system to be returned to them for service. You don't have to put up with a defective drive.
On a broader note, it's not likely to be your media, as long as you are trying to use good quality blanks rather than a low-cost generic brand. You might try a good quality blank from a different manufacturer to check however.
Also, you mention 'Disco' and 'Toast' - which implies you have installed alternative CD buring software on the system. Nothing wrong with that, but make sure these applications are properly compatible with your version of MacOS, and the system - particularly that they are Intel-native copies. A problem with third-party burning applications could cause the symptoms you describe.

  • Has anyone run Maya 7 on their MacBook Pro/iMac Core Duo/Mac Mini Core Duo?

    Hi,
I plan on getting a MacBook Pro to replace my Powerbook 1.25 GHz.
I cannot find any info on a universal binary for Maya and was just wondering if anyone has actually tried it on an Intel based Mac.
If so, how is it? Is it like a G4, faster/slower? Does it even install?
I tried looking in these forums and the rest of the internet but couldn't really find anyone who has actually got it up and running on an Intel Mac.
Also, probably worth noting that the only other PPC apps I have tested on a MacBook Pro that are quite resource hungry are Cinema 4D, another 3D app that still takes advantage of dual processors even under rosetta and Google Earth. Both of these apps actually run quite a bit faster than my PowerBook and the universal binary version of Cinema 4D is breathtakingly fast.
Navigating around Google Earth esp. with 3D buildings turned on in New York is very smooth in contrast to the "choppy-ness" of my PowerBook.
Any real world feedback would be superb,
    Thanks in advance!
    Ren

this is from creativemac.com and their 3d benchmark article
    Autodesk Maya
Our Maya tests are also pitiful for the poor MacBook. Maya, like LightWave, has not yet been ported to Intel hardware for Mac OS X. It lost out in every single test to every other piece of hardware. However, if you look at the results of the slightly more powerful MacBook Pro, you can see the potential for Maya on the 13-inch MacBook once it is finally ported.

  • Will iSight work with Intel Core Duo Mac Mini?

    Maybe it's a stupid question?

yes yes yes yes yes. it will work. but not need to make yourself feel stupid

  • Mac Pro (early 2008) still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing ... ugh

My early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 24 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM) is still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing.
Some days I can go the whole day without one, other days I will experience many, some while using the computer, some after waking it up, some after restarting from one.... its a mess.
I thought it might be RAM related. So I ran different tests on all the chips, found nothing, no errors reported after overnight looping tests. I added more RAM (I ordered 4 2Gb chips so I'd have a total of 16Gb, they sent me 4Gb cards, so now I have 24Gb. I have heard its best to have all cards of the same size, so I ran it with just the new 4Gb cards giving it 16Gb, it still crashed.) I tested the new ram alone, in 2 card groups, in different configurations on the RAM boards, nada.
Maybe it's the graphics card? But I get no weird graphics artifacts (which I did used to experience with my old iMac before it died).
The fans seem to run normally, not too fast or too loud. Sometimes after repeated crashes I'll open up the computer and blow it out with compressed air. That does seem to help, but not always. It's not real dusty, though there is a fine layer of dust that seems to be stuck/ coat the boards.
In Activity Monitor, the kernel_task hovers at about 1.22 Gb of RAM.
I can not iron down what the problem stems from. Nothing seems to alleviate the crashing, which has become more and more frequent it seems...
Anyone have any suggestions? I have tried using Hardware Test using the original OS disks. I have tried Memtest in Terminal. All to no avail. Nothing turned up any errors. I am not sure what to do next besides call for an Exorcism.
    Please help!

They keep happening. In the time it took to select the latest one, copy and paste it here, and then write this, a dozen more were logged... Is that normal??
