Frequent laptop hang

Hi All,
Bit of a vague problem here with my laptop hanging. I have a Dell E6320. Installed Arch on it a few months ago, and it was running just fine for a while. Recently it has developed the habit of hanging on me, at seemingly random intervals. Everything just stops. Desktop is frozen, keyboard unresponsive. My only recourse has been a hard restart. I've looked in the logs but haven't seen anything that would indicate a problem. Below is a extract from everything.log. Around 18:49 I booted the machine up. Sometime between 19:01 and 19:16 the OS hung again.

I have no idea how to proceed at this point. I believe this new behaviour started with the update to the 3.4 kernel, but I am not sure about that.
Any pointers on how to troubleshoot this would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark

Thanks for the replies. Nothing in dmesg or any of the logs. Or at least nothing I would consider suspicious. It just went down on me again a few minutes ago.

I'll try running the live CD for a while. I have some fresh Mint 13 downloads. I'll give one of them a shot. I suspect they will work just fine, given the differences between my config (Arch + XFCE + current Arch kernel) and the live CD config.
Thanks again,
Mark

At the HP Pavilion zd7000 laptop BIOS updating from a site HP.com (the file sp33465.exe, OC Windows XP) the laptop hanged and to a BIOS it was not established. Now at inclusion all bulbs burn, but the laptop doesn't submit life signs, fans,

3 times blink and is disconnected. Prompt how to return BIOS.

Thanks for the answer. On the bottom cover there is a bar code and number - DP080AVR MFQ# 2CB41216S4 Made in Taiwan.
Any error messages on the screen wasn't and isn't present. Updating hanged approximately for 40 % -
6 dark blue segments. After laptop switching off, approximately in 1 hour, it doesn't join any more, and at all doesn't submit

  • [Solved] Laptop hangs at boot.

    Hi,
Since today, my laptop hangs at boot (after I input my password for disk encryption). If I boot without 'quiet' the last message is "Started LVM2 PV scan on device 254:0" as well as some messages about Bluetooth. After these, simply nothing happens.
The last change I made to my system before this problem started to occur was to patch xf86-input-synaptics with this patch for palm detection: https://gist.github.com/silverhammermba … caa63c86f1 I'm not sure if this is related, but I can't think of anything else I changed.
Is there a way I can at least get a shell so I can view dmesg output or try to revert to the default synaptics driver?

Thanks, I managed to get to a shell using CTRL + ALT + F2. I was certain I tried that, but I might have been hitting CTRL + ALT + 2 the whole time, quite embarrassing...
Can I just revert to the repository version of xf86-input-synaptics by removing it with pacman -R and then reinstalling with pacman -S ? If so, this doesn't fix my problem.
I looked through dmesg and the journal but couldn't see any errors. Is there something I missed?
EDIT: Thanks for the help, I think the problem was that installing the package had created a config (with .pacnew) in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory which caused the problems.
I would still like to know if I can revert to the repository version of a package in the way I outlined above though.

Here's my problem (posted there as well):
    ====================================
I'm having the same problems that most of you have mentioned. I'll run through them here:
+ I too have had my PowerBook G4 for about 3 years, and my battery has worked fine. Until this week.
+ The battery status indicator is stuck on "calculating..." whenever I'm running on battery power. For days now, when the battery is 99% and when the battery is 10%, still "calculating..."
+ I've reset the PRAM, and the PMU. I've recalibrated the battery a couple of times.
+ My battery life is still quite strong. Or at least it was. A few days ago I was able to use it for a couple of hours on the battery, which isn't too bad. At its best, it only ran for about 3 hours.
+ Like someone else mentioned, my battery drains much faster on standby/sleep than it used to. I can leave it on standby nearly fully charged, and when I open it up just an hour later it is down to just 5% and it shuts down almost immediately.
+ Another really annoying thing is that the % calculation is erratic. My powerbook shuts down when the charge is 40% to 50%, and time remaining is almost one hour, with no warning message given.
+ I almost never get a low level warning before the battery dies and it goes to sleep.
I'll be calling applecare shortly and will post anything useful I learn.

  • Laptop hangs-freezes

I turn on my laptop and log in password to get into windows 8. This takes forever even though I don't use it frequently. Once inside, whenever I try to open up a program like explorer or anything else, the computer will not open it. The pointer arrow will move along and show signs that is trying to complete the operation but it will simply not happen no matter how much I wait. Could someone please explain or suggest what should be done?

So you can't open anything?! You might need to reinstall windows.

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 won't shut down and experience frequent finder hangs.

Help! I've only bough my Macbook Air latest version just 3 months ago and now it's giving me lots of headache.
My finder hangs frequently - sometimes during work - the other apps I'm running I'm fine but finder won't respond - I'm unable to open windows, and when I drag my mouse to the desk top, I see a spinning wheel.
When I quit my MAC, sometimes it'll hang at the finder and stop my computer from shutting down.
Tried force quit - won't work
Tried right click on finder - it'll show - finder not responding -
Eventually have to force myself to shut down the computer
I've used disk utility and attempted to fix some permissions.
    One of the log shows:
"Warning: SUID file "systems/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagemtn/ARDAgent.app/contents/MACOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."
I have not idea what that ARD Agent thing is. Tried finder search I got nothing back.
It also repaired some 'Printers.plist" as well and "Private/var/db/displaypolicyd"
I've run disk utility on different days and there's usually something to 'fix'.
But no matter what I do, my finder still hangs and I wonder if there's anything can be done t

  • Since upgrade to 10.5.8, frequent temporary hangs (spinning beachball)

    Good day!
Since updating to 10.8.5 on my MacBook Pro (15" unibody design), I'm encountering frequent visits (every 5 to 10 minutes) by the spinning beachball which last for 30 seconds or so.
At first I thought something might be slurping up all the processor power, but Activity Monitor isn't showing anything. The one thing I haven't checked yet is whether it still happens if I'm not connected via AirPort. The incidents do not appear to be limited to apps using the Internet.
    Any great ideas? Thanks!

Been having the same issues happening on the same machine as you. I did this yesterday, and so far so good.
    1. Restart in safe mode (Hold down shift key when you hear the chime)
    2. Under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities, select your hard drive on the left column, and click "Repair Permissions"
    3. Once done, restart
It's been a day since I've done this, and no beachballs yet (fingers crossed)

  • Frequent Console Hangs

We are in the process of trying to migrate our application from weblogic
8.1 to weblogic 9.2. I am noticing several times during the day that the
weblogic console hangs. Cntrl-C does not terminate the jvm I have to use
    kill -9
I am running on Solaris 9
    Any help would be appreciated

You've got an  incompatible Logitech driver and java was incompletely uninstalled.
You may have a problem with the Wacom driver.
I don't know if fixing those things will help.
There also a few window server errors, but I don't know if they are causal.
If you can note the time of the hangs, that might help narrow it down in the logs.

  • Laptop Hangs at boot - *ERROR* Unclaimed register detected.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17R 5737 laptop and I am getting issues with it using Linux.
When I try to turn on the computer sometimes I get this message:
[drm:hsw_unclaimed_reg_detect.isra.11 [i915]] *ERROR* Unclaimed register detected. Please use the i915.mmio_debug=1 to debug this problem.
If this message shows up the computer freezes right after loading the SDDM, then if I press caps lock it switches the LED, but if I press Ctrl+F1,F2,F3... it frozes completely.
The strange thing is that if this message doesn't appear all works fine.
Can somebody help me to solve this strange issue?
I can't post a dmesg when it gives the error but there it is a dmesg after a sucessfull boot:
    http://dpaste.com/1BGACTE
EDIT: After installing linux-lts kernel I can boot "normaly", sometimes the error arises but the system continues the boot and doesn't freeze

Just did that, the error continues to appear.
I've also added i915.semaphores=1 to kernel parameters activated early kms of the module i915.

  • Laptop hangs in iowait: sata_piix problem?

I just got this new laptop, an ASUS A8js, and almost everything in Arch works perfectly on it. However, I cannot transfer my old music, video, and document files en mass onto my new laptop. Any extended hard drive transactions will eventually cause (according to top) my processor to spin in iowait at 90-something percent for the rest of eternity, effectively locking up the entire system. I use the sata_piix driver. I understand that all the ATA drivers have been receiving something of an overhaul, but this laptop is new so I can't speak to whether the old drivers would have worked. Although during extremely heavy transactions (such as `cat /dev/zero >> zero.txt`) my iowait will often spike up above 50, it will eventually spike up to 90 all at once for even light but steady transactional loads, even if the iowait has been near zero the entire time. All of my partitions except boot are on LVM, which I've never had problems with before. My filesystems are all ext3. My home partition is encrypted with dm-crypt and pam_mount, but  this problem occurs even if testing my unencrypted root partition. I've tried the standard, beyond, ck, and suspend2 kernels, and compiled a custom version with preemption turned off (I ran across a post somewhere with a vaguely similar problem, where doing so helped). None of these measures helped. I haven't found any errors in my logs from the time of the lock-up, but then nothing can be written to disk with the iowait at 90+. If anyone has experienced a similar problem, I would appreciate any assistance they could offer. Output of lspci -v is below:

  • Laptop 'hanging' when trying to change background picture

    Hi
I've tried to change the background picture under system preferences - desktop/screensavers. When I tried to select a picture from my iphoto-folders the system hung and won't come back at all until I shot it down with the on/off button. I wasn't even able to do a forced quit...
Did somebody encounter this as well?
It actually worked fine again after a restart, but still I think this a strange behaviour.
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If I can jump in here, Jason is asking about background applications of which there are several always running. You can check this by opening Activity Monitor (in Applications> Utilities).
Changing pictures is affected by a number of other applications, including (oddly) the Dock.
When you selected the picture, was it in one of the Original or Modified folders? Try copying the picture and moving it to a separate folder in the Pictures folder and selecting it again.

    Hi,
It may be worth trying to reset Windows Media Player as follows.
Click the Start Menu and select Control Panel.  Open Programs and Features, Click 'Turn Windows features on or off', open up Media Features and untick Windows Media Player.  Click Yes then OK and then restart the notebook.
When Windows has restarted, click the Start Menu and select Control Panel.  Open Programs and Features, Click 'Turn Windows features on or off', open up Media Features and tick Windows Media Player.  Click Yes then OK and when WMP has finished installing, restart the notebook again.
