Frequent lock ups of my P7N Diamond

Here are my system specs:
Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 @2.50Ghz
P7N Diamond
Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX
Creative X-fi Xtreme Audio(came with board)
Hyundai Electronics Zion DDR2 800Mhz 2GB(1GBx2sticks)
Corsair CMPSU-620HX PSU (620W)
Segate Barracuda 500GB hard drive
Windows Vista 32bit
The problem is My computer restarts anywhere from 5min to 2 hours while playing a game and sometimes even while just browsing the internet and watchin videos.I ran
memtest and sticks are perfectly fine.I have the latest video drivers(185.20) and other necessary drivers are also installed.Disabled all unnecessary items in BIOS on the motherboard
like spread spectrum, eist etc and since i came to know from other threads about the video corruption issue,i updated the bios to 1.2B1 still the problem persists.the system is completely unpredictable as it simply locksup with the audio goin into an infinite loop with the video still.I hav everything running at stock speeds includin CPU,NB,DRAM all set to auto.
My memory timings are 5-5-5-18 with command rate 2T at 1.8V.CPU,system and GPU temperatures are normal. Please help me as i am not able to hav a stable system.Suggest any remedies for this issue.
thanks

ok i will up the CPU and NB voltages as u specified and lets hope its the end of this problem and i hav disabled the spread spectrum in the bios before only..
well as per the CPU-Z here are the list

  • Frequent lock ups

I am almost at my wits end with my MAC. When it is running right, it is wonderful. When it's not, its very frustrating. Shortly I will be contacting Apple AGAIN to try and resolve the problem. this has been going on for about 5 months, and it is always the same problem, requiring the same resolution to get it working.
The problem is that the machine locks up, and I can't do anything with it, other than turn it off with the power button, wait a while, restart it, use Drive Genius 3 to repair it, restart again, and it works fine, for a few days.
After locking up, shutting it down and re-starting, the same error code appears "Invalid Volume Directory Count". This has happened 13 times since August 29, 2010.
I have spent many hours with MAC tech support on this issue the first time. Worked for a couple of weeks.
Second time I was instructed to bring it into the "Genius Bar" where they installed a new hard drive. Worked for about a week.
Third time I re-installed the operating system. Worked for about a week.
I have been working with this issue because I rely on my MAC for so much, but on several occasions I have lost data when the computer stopped working.
I am entering this information on this forum in the hope that somebody else has had this problem, as well as a fix for it.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi-
Your error could come from a number of places, with RAM being a likely source.
Replacement of the hard drive helps exclude that as a possible suspect (for now).

  • Wierd lines on my display and frequent lock-ups w/ and w/o display problems

When booting I sometimes get weird lines and blocks on my display (the GRAY Apple screen) and then it hangs, other times the computer will boot and run fine for 20-30 minutes and then the display goes wonkers with blocks and lines and the computer does not respond. The only way I can get it to boot is to reset the PRAM by letting it CHIME 3x and then occasionally it will boot without issue and run, while other times I still get the blocks and lines on the display.
When I am able to get it to recover and re-boot after the lock-up and display problems and occasionally the box in the middle asking me to re-boot similar to a kernel panic the OPS gives me the option to REPORT the error and here is the error for others who would know more...
    Thank you in advance,
    Darren

Anyone know what is causing my problems? I thought it was heat so I downloaded a CPU and FAN temperature monitor and the CPU was getting VERY HOT at first so I then ramped-up the CPU FAN SPEED to maximum - it turns out the CPU FAN was not rotating well at low speed - since then I have cleaned and checked the fans and they all work as they should and blow on high(er) when the CPU temperature is above a certain level.

Is there a kb article or something that would illuminate what to look for in these logs, or is it a matter of learning by osmosis?
Both. I am not skilled in reading logs. It is a very technical and time consuming task for the uninitiated (me!) In scanning a log I look for the backtrace and loading dependencies. The first item in the backtrace is usually the roadblock.
Beyond that you can look at the Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
Should make for good bedtime reading. Puts you right to sleep.

  • Aperture 3.1 - Love Full Screen Mode, Hate The System Lock-Ups

    Hi Guys,
I don't know if I'm the only person encountering this issue but Aperture 3 is driving me nuts. While I absolutely love the program and the full-screen mode, what I hate is the frequent lock-ups that force me to completely restart my iMac. Having the application lock-up is highly annoying but at least in "normal" mode I could kill the application from the Dock or Activity Monitor. However, when I'm operating in full-screen mode then I can't switch out of the application and seem to have no option but to completely restart my computer. This problem, which I first started experiencing with version 3.0 but which does seem to have been addressed in version 3.1, is happening so often that I'm afraid now to even use full-screen mode.
This problem only, to my memory, seems to happen when making adjustments but it does not seem to matter which adjustment. In the most recent occurrence the lock-up happened when I cancelled the application of a Crop by clicking the X icon on the Crop HUD.
Does anyone know either a) what might be causing the lock-ups, or b) how I can kill Aperture without having to completely restart my computer?

You could also set up SPACES to see if that works when lock up occurs in full screen
Apple Icon > System Preference > Desktop & Screen Saver > Hot corners
I have bottom left set to spaces
Then drop the mouse to bottom left, 4 windows appear, drag aperture to a seperate window and run there, you desktop is in a different space and can be accessed by bottom left of screen mouse movement (if the mouse works when A3 locks up)

  • P7n Dimaond Vista 64 bit lock-ups

Hi, I'm experiencing random hard lock ups of my newly built Vista 64bit PC
I've reinstalled the OS 3 times, i have all the latest drivers.
I've ran memtest several times and the vista memory diag tool with no errors, and on individual sticks. i have stress tested my CPU and GPU with no errors many times.
it sometimes freezes 5 mins after booting up, when surfing the web, when on screen-save,r when typing in word and when playing games, sometimes it will be fine for hours then suddenly just freeze up.
I see nothing in the Event Viewer.
    My setup:
MSI p7n Diamond with latest official BIOS version fomr the MSI site.
    Intel e8400 @ 3.00GHz (stock)
    XFX 9800 GTX Black Edition
    4x1GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2 Ram
    Antec Quattro 1000W SLI PSU
    Trust 5.1 Sound Card.
    Hitatchi SATA HDD
    Pioneer SATA DVD/RW
    Zalman 9700NT CPU cooler.
I updated the BIOS using MSI live update, but it was freezing before the update aswell.
I cant find any pattern to the freez-ups it seems entirely random.
I have manually changed the ram voltage in BIOS to 2.1V (manufacturers reccomendation) and changed timings.
However even at stock values it still freezes
    Thanks for reading

    YIKES
Whatever you do, never attempt to update the BIOS of a system that is freezing randomly, especially via MSI Live Update.  In fact, you'd be well advised to avoid MSI Live Update entirely.
The most commonly suggested method for flashing BIOS is via USB disk method and only after booting to DOS, not Windows.  Even in these conditions, if there are hardware issues that are still preventing the system from running stable (e.g. failing PSU, excessive heat, etc.), you should not attempt to flash the BIOS.
Attempting a BIOS flash under any of these conditions is risking permanent and irreparable damage to your motherboard.
As for your Vista 64 lockups, I personally am not convinced that Vista drivers are completely reliable yet, much less Vista 64.  Another possibility is that your PSU is failing.

  • P7N SLI Platinum lock-ups

    My specs:
    Q6600 stock speed
Kingston HyperX pc8500 2x 1gb. I manually set it to it's rated timings, voltage and frequency. I have also tried different ram, from Exceleram and it makes no difference.
2x Asus EN8800GT 512mb cards (tried using just one card too, tried switching to a different 8800gt card from sparkle too, no change.)
HDD: Have tried several hard drives, pata and sata from probably all the manufacturers, i dont see why i need to post their specs since they problem persists nomatter what hdd i use.
    Windows XP SP3 proffessional.
nothing else is in the system, i removed every piece of hardware, like sound card, optical drive, etc. to isolate the problem.
    Power supply: Thermaltake ToughPower 700W
BIOS Version: the beta bios posted on this forum that supposedly fixes the video corruption bug (it doesnt). Also tried 1.0 and 1.1
The problem:  random lock-ups. Sometimes it doesnt happen for 2 days and then BAM! Its happening every 15 minutes now. It might stop happening for another 12 hours and start locking up again. It only ever happens when im working in 2d applications like browsing, using messenger or IRC, watching videos on youtube or in a media player, or just moving files around or anything mundane like that.  it once happened when i wasnt touching the keyboard or mouse at all, i was waiting for some files to finish copying over LAN.  I also get the famous video corruption but it is EXTREMELY rare, like once a month.  It crashed the last time the video corruption appeared, once i tried to click the player to pause, the system crashed.  The system will never lock up while playing games, i play medieval II total war for days without any problems.  The store i bought the p7n from tested it for me and they said it worked fine, but they used an ATI card so that may be a clue?  Then again, they are really incompetent and didnt run the right set of tests, and ignored what i had told them about the nature of the crashes.
Detailed description of the events:  System freezes, first everything except the mouse is frozen but if i try to click with the mouse, it freezes too and the screen flashes a black screen every few seconds.  it never recovers and i have to shut it down by holding the power button for several seconds.  some of the 2d graphics in windows get corrupted with artifacts, and the mouse does get heavily corrupted usually.
    What i've tried:
I thought the mobo was defective but it isnt, i got a new mobo from the store and it has the same problem.
Tried working my way through every combination of memory timings, frequencies and voltages that i thought might make a difference but it has no difference on the crashes.
All the hardware works perfectly in my Asus P5N32-E SLI motherboard (i bought this msi mobo for some different reasons that i wont go into here), so theres nothing wrong with any of my components.
The only item i've not had the oportunity to switch with a different one is the power supply, but again, it works perfectly with all other motherboards that i've tried.
Is this possibly related to the video corruption bug?  Does anyone have any idea when the next bios release is due? Please help, it sucks to buy an expensive motherboard that just doesnt work. i'll have to buy a 3rd sli mobo if I cant fix this.
PS:  Is it not possible to regulate fan speed for sysfans connected to the mobo's fan connectors? My asus mobo had great fan speed controls in the bios, if this one doesnt have any such options, i call that ridiculous.

I appreciate your effort, guys. I've tried running the memory in 800mhz and on auto timings and on some other timings too (i was kinda desperate and i messed around with the memory configuration for days with no success), and tried auto volt (it gets set to 1.8 which the memory is rated for at 800mhz) and tried 1.9 and 2.0 and 2.1 and 2.2 and i've tried completely different memory modules too that i borrowed, and tried running in single channel with both modules and running just 1 module.  none of these experiments had any effect on the crashes :\.  But don't you think this could be related to the video corruption bug? I always thought it was, since this problem doesnt seem to happen for me when there is an ATI card in the system.  Not that my 8800gt cards are defective in any way either, they are rock solid on my other motherboard.
I have one more theory, some weird inexplicable compatibility problem between this particular PSU and this particular mobo. Think it's a possibility? The psu is the only thing i have not switched out for another component, every other component i have switched for another one that was known to be working fine.
also, there is the extremely distant possibility that the issue is caused by an issue that the mobo might have with BOTH the kingston and the excelleram modules that i tried, however this seems far-fetched. but this problem is a fact and SOMETHING is causing it. i've eliminated almost everything i can think of.

  • P7n diamond - no bios - 2 of them - fun troubleshooter

    Hello,
I write fun troubleshooter because I went so far as to try my friends "working for years" Asus P5B-Plus mobo and CPU and RAM and had same results...
    Specs:  P7n Diamond - OCZ GameXstream 700W PSU - E8400 Wolfdale - G.Skill 4gb RAM (2x2) - MSI NX8800GT 512mb OC - 2 Sata WD HDDs - 2 Sata DVD drives
    The Story:
I get my supplies from newegg and built it, it turns on (gives CMOS Checksum Error) but then enters bios..... then I get random freeze-ups (even in bios) that were fixed by manually setting my ram to its default timings and low end of voltage.  This fixes it enough to allow me to install Vista 64 business.  I get everything running happily and play HL2/TF2 games for about a week before it starts locking up more and more frequently.  my USB mouse would die in game and the mouse lights/laser would turn off before the system just froze about 10 secs later...   So I decide it could be a Vista issue and so I setup a dual-boot with XP-32.  It seems to fix the freeze-ups before about 5 days later it starts freezing in XP too.  I ran memtest for 6+ hours with zero errors (albeit it did give me memtest errors when i used bios auto timings for ram)...   During the freeze-up issues I went from bios 1.0 to 1.16 to rule that out.....  didnt fix it.     It ended up getting to the point where I was freezing before windows XP or Vista even loaded...  so I RMA'd the p7n diamond.
Receive my 2nd p7n diamond and got it in..   It boots to Vista before freezing 2min later.. same with XP.. mouse stopped working after even just surfing IE. then it hard locks... one time I did get the (PFN_LIST_CORUPT) BSOD... but its not consistent.. most freeze-ups just hard lock it with no BSOD.    I get immediately frustrated and try throwing my friends 4 (1gb) sticks of PNY DDR2-667 in the machine... turn it on and it doesnt boot to bios at all/nor give any beep codes..  re-throw my DDR2-800 back in and again.. not even an attempt to show bios - i turn it on and nothing comes up on the monitor (the monitor just flashes waiting for a signal)..   So I try more troubleshooting.   Disconnected EVERYTHING but one stick of ram and the graphics card... same result - no post....    swapped ram, even tried taking the graphics card out.. no beep codes...    I then assume its a bad CPU and try my friends working-for-years E6300 core-duo chip.... same result-no bios..
Then I figure - it has to be 2 bad p7n diamond mobos..   So i try my friends Asus P5b-Plus with my E8400 CPU... turn it on.. SAME result!!  no bios or beep codes..   i'm thinking now bad PSU and its frying Mobos on contact??  Odd because both p7n diamonds gave me perfect on-board LED readouts when plugged in and turned on (and on standby)..  All peripheral cards lit-up fine...  and my friends p5b-plus also had the red light showing it was getting power....  Is it possible a PSU that worked for 2 weeks relative fine all of a sudden fry things?
so I go to best buy and buy an Antec 650W PSU to rule it out..    same result! no bios......   the main frustration is I was using the system for about 2 weeks relatively fine and now all of a sudden things seem to "fry" on contact..
Anyway, I RMA'd this p7n diamond, and the OCZ 700W PSU to try new ones...     I was just looking for opinions on what could be the problem..  I mean as it looks.. either the PSU was frying motherboards yet still lights their LEDs up..  or my E8400 CPU is ruining the motherboard??  or my RAM went bad after being OK?
some questions - when I get my new setup - im going to plug it in paranoidly......    Can I power up the system with no RAM sticks in it at all??  I just want to make sure RAM wasnt causing the mobo to short out?    Is it possible the GPU is frying the mobo?   Could my Antec 900 case wires be causing this?   I feel since I tried so many diff combinations its the one thing thats staying consistent??
    Thanks in advance!!
    -mike

Mike...when you get it back...run it outside the case, just the bare essentials, lay the MB on a non-conductive surface (the foam packing works fine.)  If it boots up and works normally..start checking your case for extra MB standoff pins that you may have left in..they will short the board.   If it still has a problem out of the case w/ minimum components...then you can start troubleshooting components.  This is the way to start.  G/luck.
    Paul.

  • Lock ups XF-I and X1900

    Hi I am running
EVGA 33-K8-NF4-AX with the latest Bios
    Radeon x900xtx
    2 gig OCZ 2-3-2-5 ram
Antec true power 2.0 550watt PS
    Sony 80a Dvd burner
    70 gig raptor sata dri've
    300 gig seagate sata 3 dri've
    Sound Blaster Xf-I extreme music
    Windows XP SP2
I get random lock ups under any D3D or OpenGL game as long as im on the desktop my sounds function without an issue. Previously I had been using a EVGA 7800 gt with no problems. Under the 7800 gt I did not have any lock u
    ps.
Before installing the Radeon x900xtx I did a format of the dri've and a clean install of windows xp with SP2. I have tried catalyst 6.4 and the lock ups were very frequent in catalyst 6.3 they are less frequent and more random. I have upgraded to the latest drivers for every other component on my pc. I posted this here and also I have sent in a ticket to ATI because if I remove the XF-I and go with the real tek 8 channel onboard sound all of the lock ups disapear. When the XF-I is in the pc and it locks up it goes into a sound stutter at random times in any D3D or OpenGL game

I don't think so, Lion with the latest updates is running fine for most of us.
Post the log for your next lockup or the previous one if you can isolate the timeframe.

  • System lock-ups after upgrading to Tiger

This topic was previously posted in 'Installation & Setup'.
After 3 days (and 18 views) I got no replies.
Maybe that forum was not appropriate, so I decided to try it in this forum.
About 4 months ago I exchanged my 80 GB Hd in favor of an 200 GB Maxtor 6L200P0. One day later I upgraded OS X 10.3.9 to Tiger (retail DVD).
At that time I experienced a frequent (several times a day) lock-up of my system.
No messages, nothing, not even after powering down and restarting.
After some time I figured out that the lock-ups occurred on Internet access. Clicking on a link in Safari, posting messages on Discussions. Even Mail locked the system a few times. Also Corripio (artwork and lyrics finder for iTunes) caused the system to lock.
After that, I decided to perform an Archive & Install (first time after almost 4 years of using this Mac). Except from having to re-install a number of 3rd party apps. the system seemed to perform well. No lock-ups were experienced for a few weeks.
    Problem solved, I thought.
Although far less frequent than before, I do experience those annoying lock-ups a few times a week.
    Here are my questions:
What could be the cause of the lock-up?
Is is advisable to perform a Clean Install? What advantage do I have of, it opposite to performing an A&I. I'm reluctant to perform a clean install at the moment, because I haven't found a few serials of commercial and shareware applications yet ( I know, I should have written them down :-/ )
Any hints/tips to track down the exact cause?
    TIA
    M
P.S. ( I do have a bootable complete backup of my HD on an Maxtor Onetouch II )

    Hi, M.
    1. You wrote: "What could be the cause of the lock-up?"The number of potential causes range from disk corruption or bad applications to serious hardware problems, such as a defective logic board.
    2. You wrote: "Any hints/tips to track down the exact cause?"I suggest treating the "lock up" problem — better described as a "freezes and hangs" problem — similar to a kernel panic as the basic troubleshooting and hardware testing steps are virtually the same. See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
It provides a comprehensive roadmap which you should follow from beginning to end, in the order specified in the FAQ.
    2. You wrote: "Is is advisable to perform a Clean Install? What advantage do I have of, it opposite to performing an A&I."The term "Clean Install" does not apply in Mac OS X. That is obsolete Mac OS 9 terminology. The closest Mac OS X equivalent to a "Clean Install" is an Archive and Install with the Preserve User and Network Settings option, which it sounds like you've already tried once previously, but you may want to try again as part of the troubleshooting process I outlined above. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
    The other options are:
    • Archive and Install without the Preserve User and Network Settings option: This reinstalls the OS and wipes out both your accounts and your network configuration, but preserves the previous System folder.
    • Erase and Install: Erases the hard drive, i.e. Macintosh HD, and reinstalls the OS from scratch, preserving nothing: your accounts, network settings, and everything else on the drive are deleted.
Of those two, and since you have a bootable backup, the second (Erase and Install) would be the second-to-last thing you would try, the last being taking the machine in for service.
    Good luck!

  • System Lock-ups. What can be wrong?

On to more serious issues.. .
I am experiencing system lock-ups on the brand spanking new computer I just buildt.(Yeah, yeah.. . Anti-static and all other thinkable precautions were taken.. .)
Needless to say it's annoying the hell out of me. I can't work and I can't play with a situation like this.. .
The system just hangs and the only solution is to press the reset button.
This usually happens in games or when scrolling a window. Less frequently it also happens when doing nothing. It only seems like it's getting worse - more frequent that is.
Are there any known issues with TwinMos RAM and nForce2?
The RAM and CPU are running on the same clock. The error persists when running the RAM at it's native clock too.
I'm running Catalyst 4.11 and Bios Information says 113-95702-100.
The BIOS of the MB has not been flashed by me - as out-of-the-box.
    Nvidia drivers version 5.10.
No overclocking of any sort of any device.
I will be running the full monty in Memtest x86 over night, but the RAM DIMM is spanking new and has been handeled with the utmost caution. The first five tests returned nothing wrong.
Another peculiar hick-up is that sometimes after the lock-up and after I've pressed the reset button the BIOS seems to take forever to detect the IDE devices. If I power off and on again, the IDE detection happens in a snap. Very, very strange.. .
Edit: I have a sneaking suspicion that it gets worse until I power off/on - after that it will take a longer time for the error to return. I haven't verified this empirically, but I have a hunch.. .
I really hope there's someone with helpful insight to this problem out there!
    Thank you for your time.

Woops. Seems like I don't have access rights to the last link.
It seems like downflashing to B30 is the only way to go for me as I'm having *major* stability issues, even with no overclocking.
Heck - I even had to reset and reboot the machine when trying to write this post just now!
I must say I've never experienced such outrageous instability with any of my other MSI MBs before.. . Not from any other make for that matter. This is just incredible.
I'll flash it tomorrow (if I can find a damned floppy somewhere). For now I really have to work.
    Fingers crossed!
    Thanks again for great input!

  • Please help! Major problems (performance and lock-ups) with brand new W520 with Intel 520 SSD

My company primarily uses HP machines but I've been a long time IBM (now Lenovo) fan so I recently had IT purchase me a new Lenovo W520 (product ID 42763LU).
Once the machine arrived I had them do the following:
Remove the 500GB HDD and replace it with an Intel 520 series 240GB SSD
Remove the optical drive and install the 500GB hard drive that came with the machine in the optical bay (with the bay adapter of course)
Format both drives and put a preconfigured windows 7 64-bit image on the SSD
A general summary of the system is the following:
    Intel i7-2860QM CPU
    8GB RAM
    NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
    Intel 520 240GB SSD (primary HDD) [SSDSC2CW240A3]
Hitachi 500GB HDD (optical bay) [HTS727550A9E365]
    Intel Advanced-N 6205 network adapter
    TouchChip Fingerprint Scanner
The machine was a few days delayed getting to me due to "hard drive driver issues" (that's what I was told). When I received the machine I immediately noticed that it was much slower than I expected (I have a custom built i5 HTPC at home running windows 7 on a Crucial SATA III SSD that I was comparing it to) and I was experiencing frequent hangs (ranging from 30 seconds to multiple minutes), super long boot times, general “slowness” at times, and occasional lock-ups. Since our "baseline" laptop here at work is the "equivalent" HP workstation my IT guys have been less than helpful in helping me to solve this issue. Being reasonably computer savvy I decided to try to try to fix the issue myself. I performed the following “troubleshooting” steps:
    1. One of the first issues (errors) I noticed in the event viewer was errors related to the optical drive. Clearly the image they installed on the machine was not from a machine with the same hardware configuration. So, I decided to just wipe the machine and perform a fresh install of windows 7 from the disks (well, USB). After spending multiple days installing windows, performing updates, making sure all the drivers were current, and installing only the critical software I need, I was disappointed to realize that although I fixed the optical drive errors the machine was still slow, was hanging, and locking up regularly.
    2. Removed the cover on the machine and removed/reinstalled the drive to verify it was secure.Everything looked good.
    3. Verified the latest firmware is installed on all my Intel hardware. Everything seemed up to date.
    4. I performed a number of troubleshooting steps like booting the machine with/without the battery, with/without the HDD in the optical bay, installed/removed from the docking station, etc. and none of these things helped (also a note – occasionally when running on the battery I was hearing a strange “buzz” or “static” sound coming from the area around the SSD).
    5. Next I did some internet research and learned quite a few things. First, it sounds like others have had similar problems with this machine and/or SSD combo and there were quite a few options suggested to “fix” these issues. The general consensus for troubleshooting steps were:
5.1. Download and install the latest Intel chipset drivers and AHCI controller drivers (overwriting whatever windows installs during updates). This didn’t fix anything.
5.2. Turn off PCI express link state power management in the power manager. This didn’t fix anything.
5.3. Disable superfetch, prefetch, indexing, defragmentation, page file, system restore, and hibernate. A few of these were already disabled by windows so in those cases I just verified they were disabled in the services and application editor. These things may have slightly increased performance but did not fix the major hang/lockup issues I was having.
5.4. I followed online steps to edit the registry to disable the PCI link power management by adding ports, adding the required variables, and setting them all to 0. This did seem to have fixed the hangs and/or lock-ups but the machine is still much slower than I would expect (boot times are still pretty slow and it does “stutter” when I’m doing more than one thing at a time. Also a note here – I have the Intel SSD toolbox installed and I noticed that it was giving me a warning for DIPM not being optimized. I made the mistake of clicking “Tune!” and then started having the hang/lock-up issues again. I went back into the registry and sure enough the PCI link power management variables for ports 0 and 1 were set back to 1. I set them back to 0 and the hangs have gone away. I will not be “tuning” the DIPM through the Intel SSD toolbox again…
    6. I also fixed a couple of other minor errors I was seeing in the event viewer by disabling benign services and/or making slight timeout modifications (I researched each issue on the internet to verify they were benign before I implemented any changes). These fixes didn't seem to do anything other than make some of the errors/warnings go away. So, the list of errors/warnings has become much smaller but I’m still getting the following (maybe an issue, maybe not?):
Event ID 37 for every processor saying that they are in a reduced performance state for xx seconds since the last report
Event ID 10002 - WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped
Event ID 4001 - WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped
Event ID 27 – Intel® 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection link is disconnected
I suspect the WLAN errors have something to do with windows fighting with the Lenovo access connection tools?
    7. Since the machine still seemed slow I downloaded the program AS SSD and checked the performance of the SSD. When I compared my performance numbers to the benchmark numbers I found onlineI was very surprised to discover that I’m getting about 50% of the performance that I should (values below are read/write).
    Seq: 262.11 / 188.32 (s/b 504.58 / 298.28) [MB/s]
    4K: 15.83 / 44.92 (s/b 21.70 / 62.60) [MB/s]
    4K-64Thrd: 165.23 / 154.46 (s/b 241.38 / 234.08) [MB/s]
    Acc.time: 0.218 / 0.294 (s/b .0186 / 0.208) [ms]
    Score: 207 / 208 (s/b 314 / 327)
    Overall Score: 533 (s/b 797)
One more note - it seems like my cooling fan is running at a high speed almost all of the time. This is probably one of my power settings (I think I have it set for max performance) but it's even doing this when there is no load (i.e. I'm using IE and just vieweing webpages - like right now).
So, I apologize for such a long post but I’ve spent countless hours researching and troubleshooting this problem and haven’t been able to figure out what the heck is wrong here. Am I missing something simple or do you guys think I have a SSD and/or problem with the machine itself? To say that any and all help would be greatly appreciated would be a massive understatement – I’m on the verge of pulling my hair out and I really need this machine working as quickly as possible!
Please let me know if you have any suggestions and/or need additional information. Thanks in advance for your help!
    -Erik

Lol gotcha about the drive as an option. I didn't go SSD with mine. Do you have the latest firmware on your drive? It is supposed to be v1.97. Just checking (ah and I see item 3 so guess so). Do you have the SSD drive toolbox software installed?
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Solid+State+Drives+and+Cach...)
Seems some useful tools are in there. I can't say much beyond that with the drive. Oh. Why does your fan always run at high speed? Can you describe that?  I mean, are we troubleshooting the right kind of issue? Is there anything else going on with your system? I saw about the reduced core speeds message. what are your system loads like? Anything causing high cpu utilization? Could be something other than the drive causing your low numbers and lockups.

  • Beach balls and lock ups

ep... need some help with my issues that have been going on for a while.
turning off time machine reduced the temporary lock ups, but they still occur.
also have done a complete reinstall of leopard... issues still occur.
    my setup... a mac pro.
programs randomly lock up, show a beach ball and force quits do not respond very quickly (sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to get out of the stall).
    adium, handbrake experience frequent stalls.
ical and fontbook won't open at all... just beachball and eventually quit.
firefox crashes about 2-4 times a day.
    terminal is very crashy.
what can i do to solve these issues? i'd gladly reformat but the archive & install (without importing settings) barely improved the situation.
thanks for your time & effort to all those that assist...

holy crap i removed all the windows truetype and font fork (eh?) files from my system and fontbook now loads.
i had a feeling it was font related, but things are looking up...
    will post more findings...

  • P7n Diamond, Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF, speed problems

I have been having various problems with both the RAID and memory speeds in this system.  The RAID problems (DEGRADED RAID 5) come and go but my current primary issue is that the system will not run with the memory set at its rated settings:
    1066 MHz
    5-5-5-15
    2.1v
The best I can get it to clock up to is 1000 MHz at which the system will run for about 5 to 10 minutes before locking up.  I ran memtest for 2 full cycles at this frequency and no problems were detected (i think it was run at 1000 MHz, it's been a while sorry).
The system is currently running stable at 800 MHz (the speed it sets the memory to on auto).  It will also run stable at various points higher up to the 1000 as I mentioned above but since I have never heard of someone running their system anywhere between 800 and 1066 (unless they were overclocking) I figgured it would be most healthy for my system to run at the 800 and no higher until we can get this figured out.
I have seen that this board sometimes sets the wrong automatic voltage on some people's 45nm processors.  My x3350 is a 45nm proc but i'm not sure what its voltage is supposed to be, i just left it on automatic... maybe this has something to do with the problem?

Hey, thanks guys.   Wow it's amazing that nobody had said anything about the 1066 memory to me before (like when i was building the system and throwing together a parts list).
The only problem they could find with my config on eggexpert.com was the motherboard...  they said it had problems with the raid but didn't quote or point to any sources so i just did a google search and when i couldn't find anything to back up their problem statement i just blew it off.  Guess it's the last time i'll ever make that mistake.
Either way though, MSI says it should work fine.  So if it doesn't, shouldn't there be something that could be done?  You would also think that I could find someone out there who's WAY smarter than me who has had this same raid problem and figured it out and gotten it to work.  I'm sure there's plenty of guys out there who are using this board with a raid 5 as well, so maybe i'm just doing something wrong?   I have always had good results with MSI and I really don't think it should have to come down to finding another mobo manufacturer.
Oh, and for anyone who might suggest rma, it's too late for that.  Believe me, i would if i could.

  • MSI P7N Diamond - New PC Build - Need Help Posting

I just finished connecting my P7N Diamond out of the case and powered on my new build for the first time and saw BIOS version, HDD information, and the bad checksum message on the screen. I also saw the "Press DEL to enter BIOS" and the "F2 To Continue" messages.
Pressing the DEL key on the keyboard resulted in nothing happening at all. I soon realized that the keyboard wasn't responding and I had no num lock light at all after pressing the Num Lock key multiple times. I started with a generic, USB keyboard and then swapped keyboards to an older, still working one I had with a PS/2 connector.
Still no keyboard lights but magically it entered BIOS after I plugged it in the PS/2 socket and immediately asked if I wanted to exit BIOS  without saving. Pressing the "Y" key did nothing. Pressing <ESC> did nothing. The keyboard seemed frozen.
I pressed the RESET button on the motherboard and this caused a re-boot but now with a black screen (no messages at all). I powered it down, removed the power cords and then pressed the "clear CMOS" button. Re-connected the power cords and powered it on; but still a black screen. Powered it down, removed the power cords and removed the battery for 1 minute (I even pressed the clear CMOS button again). Re-connected the power cords, powered it up and still have a black screen.
I know this is the place where all the experts hang out, so any help will be appreciated.

    Just an update...
New build is working very well at this point.
I've set the voltage in BIOS to 2.1 for the memory and installed Vista Ultimate, updated it via Windows Update site, applied the memory patch. I've discovered that I have a bad stick of memory as no matter what slot I place this one stick of memory in, the PC fails to post, so I'm running with 3x1GB sticks. I've ordered new memory that should be here today; Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX.
The only problem I've encountered thus far is with one of my NVIDIA RAID arrays in "Degraded" status (mirror broken). This happened after I had applied the latest MS patches and a re-boot. I didn't suspect a HDD failure because the drives are new and the status of each drive was displaying as HEALTHY. I did my research on this site and discovered the solution which was to delete one of the two drives (I chose the one with the least amount of data) from the array and then added it back into the same array. The re-build took about 2 hours (they are 400GB Segate drives) and now it's working as advertised. I suspect a software problem caused this as one of the two drives was showing that it had less data (used) than the other drive.
My next steps are to install the new memory, test it with memtest86+ and then begin the OC ritual.
Thanks again for your help, Jason and Aaron Yuri.
