Frequent random software crashes taking out files, applications and OS

We are a small niche publishing company with a network of 9 Macs of various ages - some very new running 10.6.3 and others older (mini macs running 10.5). We run MS Office (2004,2008 and 2011), Extensis Suitcase (Fusion) and QuarkXpress v8.
About 6 months ago one of the Mac users (running OS 10.5) complained that his Microsoft User Data folder had moved. I moved it back but everything then went downhill from then on. One by one all the Macs became corrupted in some way, and they nearly always followed the same pattern. Firstly files or folders on the desktop go missing (not in trash) then Extensis Suitcase and QuarkXpress become corrupted. Quite often Word or Entourage fails too. On many occasions the OS has also become corrupted so I have to reinstall everything.
This now happens on a daily basis, although 2 or 3 of the Macs seem to have settled down and have not played up for some weeks. As you can imagine we have wasted a tremendous amount of time and energy on this. We employed the services of an IT specialist who cannot work out what the problem is. He thought it was a file-sharing problem and installed a Mac Server but it has made no difference.
Someone in an online IT forum suggested that if we have a Quark document that keeps getting over-written (which is the case with us) then it has probably become corrupted and it corrupts whatever is stored near it on the hard drive, so could quite easily take down applications and the OS. This seemed logical and I asked the department to build new pages from scratch and banned them from opening the old pages. This has made no difference.
QuarkXpress themselves said that Quark can crash if you edit and save a document which was created in an earlier version of Quark. Well, Quark crashes all the time and seems to be the worst piece of software ever written in my opinion, but it shouldn't wipe out your whole computer, should it??
I had also suspected a virus and put Kaspersky on a couple of the most-used Macs for a while but it didn't find anything so I didn't bother reinstalling it again when I next had to do a re-install of the Macs.
I am now suspecting it could be something to do with MS Office 2004. I have some older Mac Minis which should be running it fine (but don't) but it has also been loaded on a few of the more modern iMacs running 10.6. I notice the two Macs running 10.6 which have "settled down" and haven't played up for weeks run Office 2008 and 2011.
I am also posting this problem to Microsoft and Quark in the hope that someone somewhere has experienced this before and can come up with a solution.

The theories that best fit your description are (1) sabotage and (2) defective third-party software.
As for (1), check your logs carefully for evidence of unauthorized access, either remote or local.
As for (2), look for anything you installed on all the affected hosts that runs as root or includes a kernel extension. Commercial "anti-virus" software would be a prime suspect.
Verify the directory of the startup volume of each client in Disk Utility (you can do this via a remote shell with diskutil.)
+QuarkXpress themselves said that Quark can crash if you edit and save a document which was created in an earlier version of Quark. Well, Quark crashes all the time and seems to be the worst piece of software ever written in my opinion, but it shouldn't wipe out your whole computer, should it?+
No, it shouldn't and it can't.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings

    I need to update my system, I realized that I need Snow Leopard (quiet late) before Maverick. My question is, how can I install it keeping files and all the data. I found this on Internet, does it work?
    Install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings
    If you follow these steps, the installer will replace your operating system if one is already present, but will preserve your account information and personal files.  You may have to reinstall some applications, however.
    Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you have more than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer while holding down the c key. This causes your computer to start up from the install disc rather than your hard drive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, release c .
    The Mac OS X installer should open automatically. Follow the on-screen prompts to read and accept the license agreement and begin the installation. When prompted to choose a destination disk, select your preferred location and click Install.
    When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restart your computer. After the installation completes, a configuration program may begin automatically if you are installing for the first time. You will need to supply basic setup information for your computer.
    Update your system software to ensure that you have the most recent operating system components.  From the Apple menu, select Software Update... , and then follow the instructions on the screen. Often, you will have to restart your computer, and you may have to run Software Update multiple times before it can completely update your system.

    That's why you need to back it up. You won't need to restore the backup immediately afterwards unless something goes wrong during the upgrade, but you'll need it later; the drive will eventually fail.

  • How do I uninstall Mackeeper, I haven't did the install, but I want to get it out of applications and my dock.  Please advise how.

    How do I uninstall MacKeeper, after reading some comments I see it isn't a good thing.  I have it in my applications and dock, but have not did the install process.  How do I delete it out of my doc and applications?

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
    Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
    Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
    Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
    Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
    Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
    If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
    There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
    Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How do you try out an application and keep $HOME clean afterwards

    As a new Gnome user, naturally I turned to evolution for an email client well integrated with Gnome. As it turned out, I couldn't find any love for it, so I removed the package. But the problem was that it left behind in several places stuff I no longer wanted.
    I had prepared for just that. During the try-out of evolution, I had inotify monitor the files it laid its hands on:
    $ inotifywait -mr -e CREATE -e MODIFY -e DELETE ~
    The list I got from this:
    create ~/.pki/nssdb/{cert9.db,key4.db,pkcs11.txu}
    create ~/.config/evolution/*
    create ~/.local/share/evolution/*
    modify ~/.config/dconf/user
    modify ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home*
    add password to ~/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring (gnome-keyring)
    download mails etc. to ~/.cache/evolution/
    Obviously the cleanup was not as easy as simply removing files/folders, I had to:
    clean up dconf database:
    $ dconf reset -f /org/gnome/evolution/
    $ dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/notifications/application-children
    ['gnome-network-panel', 'nautilus', 'evolution']
    $ dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/notifications/application-children "['gnome-network-panel', 'nautilus']"
    $ dconf reset -f /org/gnome/desktop/notifications/application/evolution/
    clean up login password stored in gnome-keyring: install and run `seahorse', delete the entry "Evolution Data Source XXXXXXXXXX.XXXX.XX@hostname".
    clean up data and config:
    $ rm -rf ~/.cache/evolution/ ~/.local/share/evolution/ ~/.config/evolution/
    I don't know about the NSS stuff, but since no other applications seem to use it (IIRC NSS is used by Chromium, which I don't use), I simply remove it all:
    $ rm -rf ~/.pki/
    gvfs metadata stuff I really don't know about; ignoring.
    As you can see, It takes some long hard work to simply try out an application like evolution while keeping my $HOME intact.
    I imagine I could have tried it out under another user (correctly named "tester"), or maybe used some kind of filesystem snapshot (which ext4 lacks afaik), or some kind of sandbox. Too much hassle maybe?
    My question to you is how do you do a throw-away trace-free test-run of an application?

    Heh, to me having to mess with dconf databases and moving $HOME seem way more complicated!
    So if you just do a quick Arch install into a virtual machine (you can expedite it by mounting a shared directory and sharing/copying your /var/cache/pacman/pkg directory to avoid re-downloading all your installed packages). Configure it as you wish. Now create a shapshot of the virtual machine as it now exists. This is almost a one-click operation in Virtualbox. Now you have a 'saved state'. Boot up the VM, install the package you want to test...change things, break things, whatever. When you're done, shutdown the VM and select the option to 'Discard current state' or some such. Now the VM reverts back exactly to how you set it up originally. Keep it updated just like your regular system (or in whatever state you need for testing) and snapshot it after an update. You can discard old snapshots when you're comfortable with your current update.
    The other other tools I mentioned are just tools that can deploy and configure  multiple virtual machines (for example for developers to be able  work collaboratively in identical environments). Probably overkill for what you need.
    I think you will spend less time getting a suitable test VM configured then you will trying to worry about filesystem snapshots and monkeying with environment variables. Just my two cents

  • I heard Lyon won't work with Quicken, what software is taking it's place and will it be easy to transfer data?

    I have read reports Lyon won't support Quicken.  I use Quicken all the time.  what finance software is taking it's place/recommended and will data transfer be seamless and easy?

    You have that backwards. Quicken will not work with Lion, and Intuit will not produce a compatible program. They suggest you switch to Quicken Elements.
    There are quite a large number of finance software available. You will find them at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads
    I believe a good candidate is Mind Your Own Business - MYOB, but there are many others. You will have to find one that suits your particular needs best.
    The Quicken you now have is able to export some of its data files to .csv format that can be used with other software that cannot read the standard Quicken file format.

  • Backspace Taking Out of Application.

    Hi,
    I am having a issue with the backspace as its causing me to go to the previous page or sometimes to out of the app.
    For example, after opening a popup, if I try to make a change and during that if I press the backspace, I move to the previous screen.
    Is there any way to avoid this?

  • Bad File Permissions, Locked Files, Applications and Drives

    I've been running in to a huge problem the last few days and I can't find a solution short of a complete archive and reinstall. The problem started with photoshop CS3; I couldn't open the application because it said that it was locked and to go into the 'get info' panel and change it. Well, it's not locked and nothing I did could change that. Shortly after this, I started getting folders and files that would keep changing their permissions so I wouldn't have access to them any more. I kept getting the "Unknown" user in the 'Get Info' panel of these files and folders. While trying to find a solution to that, I could no longer add files to the Trash without immediately emptying it. I tried the steps from this post but nothing worked:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1216618&tstart=0
    After trying all this, All of my drives except my Main Boot Drive locked itself and I can't figure out what's going on. I have never had this many problems happen in the 12+ years of owning a Mac. could someone please help me.

    I went back to 10.4.11. Right before the upgrade to 10.5 I bought a new hard drive and cloned my old system to it and then upgraded. When my machine became completely unusable, I was able to just through in my old drive. I didn't loose that much, but it's still frustrating. I'm still dealing with all my external drives being Locked or the permissions are so messed up that it might as well be locked. I'm gonna be waiting for 10.5.4 before I even think of upgrading again. Worst system upgrade I've EVER had to do.

  • Photoshop crashes with 1 file open and opening second from Desktop

    I have an odd dilemma: a user can work on a single file fine in Photoshop. If she tries to open a second file in Photoshop and chooses 'Desktop', Photoshop immediately crashes/closes.
    I logged into the computer as myself with Administrative privileges and was able to do the above without Photoshop crashing. I logged into the computer under a different general account with the same privileges as the user and was again able to do the above without Photoshop crashing. It appears to be something related to her profile, but a profile rebuild did not resolve the issue.
    I read somewhere else on the forums about choosing a local printer. I did that, but the problem persisted. Are there any other user-specific settings that may be causing Photoshop to crash?

    We ended up having to rebuild her entire computer image from scratch. That seemed to resolve the issue (albeit a time-consuming process).

  • Taking data file offline and online

    When I take a data file offline, which SCN get frozen? Is it the stop scn in the control file or is it the checkpoint scn in the data file header?
    Matt

    Hi,
    When I take a data file offline, which SCN get frozen? Is it the stop scn in the control file or is it the checkpoint scn in the data file header?
    Stop SCN is the SCN which gets recoreded in control file when datafile is backup mode or datafile is offline.
    Its checkpoint scn in Data File Header. As you the STOP SCN is going to Updated wehn ever there are changes with respective to the datafile.. as it implicitly says that STOP SCN, wit respective Offline datafile will not Update, until next scn generates (until the data file make online)

  • Taking out IF's and returning a boolean expression

    I thought a better way to implement this later method might be to remove the IF's and just return a boolean expression true or false if one date object is later than another date object. I almost have it correct but one case is still not outputting correctly.
    Heres the return statement:
    return ((year > otherDate.year)||(year==otherDate.year)&&(month > otherDate.month)&&
                        (day > otherDate.day));

    someone told you that the code looked right? humm... don't look right to me.
    basically if the years are different you are done and know the answer but if the years are the same you must look to the month
    So why don't you have exactly the same situation to deal with the case where you only look at the day if the months are equal? You need an extra set of parens, and another || condition and a term involving == months.
    Nope, your code just mixes together the code for checking days and checking months.
    You CAN do this all in a single boolean expression, but it is nested two levels deep and too long to fit on a line. And you got it wrong. (this is a hint that the person reading the code will also not be sure that the code is correct)
    You have done no one a favor by removing the IFs and using a single complicated boolean expression.

  • Scale Out File Server for Applications using Shared VHDX

    Just trying to get a definitive answer to the question of can we use a Shared VHDX in a SOFS Cluster which will be used to store VHDX files?
    We have a 2012 R2 RDS Solution and store the User Profile Disks (UPD) on a SOFS Cluster that uses "traditional" storage from a SAN. We are planning on creating a new SOFS Cluster and wondered if we can use a shared VHDX instead of CSV as the storage
    that will then be used to store the UPDs (one VHDX file per user).

    Sure you can do it. See:
    Deploy a Guest Cluster Using a Shared Virtual Hard Disk
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265980.aspx
    Scenario 2: Hyper-V failover cluster using file-based storage in a separate Scale-Out File Server
    This scenario uses Server Message Block (SMB) file-based storage as the location of the shared .vhdx files. You must deploy a Scale-Out File Server and create an SMB file share as the storage location. You also need a separate Hyper-V failover cluster.
    The following table describes the physical host prerequisites.
    Cluster Type
    Requirements
    Scale-Out File Server
    At least two servers that are running Windows Server 2012 R2.
    The servers must be members of the same Active Directory domain.
    The servers must meet the requirements for failover clustering.
    For more information, see Failover Clustering Hardware Requirements and Storage Options and Validate
    Hardware for a Failover Cluster.
    The servers must have access to block-level storage, which you can add as shared storage to the physical cluster. This storage can be iSCSI, Fibre Channel, SAS, or clustered storage spaces that use a set of shared SAS JBOD enclosures.
    StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.
