Frequent request to use more memory

I often am asked for permission for the site to use more (Safari) memory.  It's annoying.  What can I do to elimintae this annoyance?  I've set "database storage" to 50 meg but the popup message thinks I have much less.
Mac OS10.5.8  I believe I have the latest update for the player as well.

It may be that that is all the memory that is needed for the current tasks. Consider that even when your system is working hard, it may not be the RAM the is the bottleneck. It may be that the hard disks, the buses, the CPUs, or the GPU is where the resources are maxed out.

    Hello
Is there any way to force Premiere Pro to use more memory on a macbook pro?
I've got 8gb, but it's maxing out at 2gb....still have almost 4gb free not being used.
In my memory preference, I have 6 GB set to share between Premiere Pro and the encoder.
    Thanks

  • Can oracle use more memory than pga+sga

    Hi Experts,
If I have set pga 1GB and SGA 2GB then Could oracle use more than 3GB RAM from OS.
    Thanks,
Please Ignore if seems to be very basic question..

    Yes.
The PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET is only a target. On a busy system, a system with frequently changing SQL patterns , Oracle may sometimes attempt to allocate a higher value.
I presume that you are on 32-bit Windows. You will hit ORA-4030 errors occassionally because Oracle on Windows is a single process (multi-threaded) and Windows limits the memory the process can address.
I suggest that you reduce your P_A_T.

  • 5.0 RC: slower and uses more memory

So far, I can't approve the promise of JDK 5.0 (RC): it is not only slower but also takes up more memory! Startup time is also the same compared to 1.4.2_05.
I tested with a server application running the same task several times in sequence. The task does a little JDBC access, some calculations and some heavy XML processing and FOP generating. I checked it twice but running the server with the 5.0 RC server HotSpot took considerably longer than with the 1.4.2_05 server HotSpot VM: 10 - 30 % longer!!! As I log memory usage after each task, the 5.0 test also showed slightly more memory used than the 1.4.2_05 version. (On Windows 2000 computer)
I wonder if this is a joke from Sun or if the RC is not optimized/has debug code enabled???

I hope that the final version could ship better optimized than the RC version - it's very slow even in a Pentium 4 machine. Is there any debug info left in jvm.dll anymore?
They even use Intel's VTune profiler (you can check such affirmation by reading J2SE SDK 1.4 SCSL Source code) but apparently they use the good old Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 compiler, instead of using Intel's C++ 7.X Optimizing Compiler. (Use the following options for getting a hotspot.log file that gives you a lot of informations about compiling: java -XX:+UnlockDiagnosticVMOptions -XX:+LogCompilation ) The Intel's compiler could speed up the JIT compiler speed and the interpreted code speed. (Well, I never tried to compile SCSL code with Intel's C++ compiler and check my assertion...)

    Hi, experts
I running Oracle RAC , with 6 instances per node in Oracle RAC 10.2.0.3.0 Solaris 5.10 x86-64 32 Gb RAM and 4 processors core 2 dual
    Each instance is configured with

    dbprd3 = 2.5 gb
    dbprd4 = 1.5 gb

Memory is not fixed for Oracle. You do not assign x GB of RAM to Oracle and the database will only use that much and no more.
The Oracle database engine consists of a number of processes. Each of these need a data segment. Each data segment (private process memory) can grow and shrink. And these data segments do not form part of the x GB of RAM that was assigned to Oracle's SGA (shared memory).
The number of these processes differ from instance to instance. There are management processes that Oracle will run from time to time. There is a job processing pool, a shared server processing pool and a parallel query processing pool. These can also grow and shrink. And on an instance running several jobs (and one that uses PQ processing), there will be more running processes than on another instances. Thus more private process memory will be used and less free server memory will be available on that server.
A single dedicated server process (created by the Listener to service a client connection) can also consume all available server memory - by running poorly designed and written PL/SQL bulk processing code that results in the private process memory of that dedicated process to continually grow. Hopefully this is not the case - but the fact is that a single server process can consume all available free server memory and more.
As the number of processes differ from RAC instance to RAC instance, it is the norm to see different amounts of memory utilisation on RAC nodes. Memory utilisation depends on the processing that RAC instance is currently doing.

  • How to knoew what apps ara using more memory? aamnd how to find em?

my computer seem to be using alot of space and i think is mostly junk i need to no how to find outn wht is using it anh how to dlete it permantly?

    Hello miukreb!
Please make at least a spell check before asking questions in the internet. Your text is difficult to understand.
You have a program called "Activity Monitor", which is showing everything you asked for (I think): you find it in the folder Applications > Utilities. This program shows you the memory used and the CPU.
If you meant your disk usage of your files you need an other program; for example "Disk Inventory X" or "WhatSize"
Best wishes for the New Year 2012!

  • Why does firefox use more memory the longer it's open?

Firefox goes from using 90,000k when first opened to 293,000k after a couple of hours. It didn't used to go up that high. This is just Firefox this doesn't count what plugin container uses. This just started happening where it would get this high. I've not installed any new addons recently. The addons I do have are foxy tunes, adblock plus, Java console, Java quickstarter, move media player 7, Memory fox, Microsoft.net frame work assistance, personas, and yontoon layers. I've tried running in safe mode and disabling all the addons and I've still got the same result. I'm using firefox 3.618.

Sometimes application and programs don't report to the OS that it is no longer using the Ram and therefore the Ram Appears in use. Go to the Mac App Store and download a free Application called Free Memory. It's a useful tool that allows you to free that Ram that is not being used right from the Menu Bar.

  • Cannot set the VM to use more memory !!!

    Hello,
When I run the Java program with -Xms512m -Xmx1024m, it is fine.
But When I set it to -Xms1024m -Xmx2048m, it cvannot start the VM !!
    Eric

As a guess - you are not using a 64 bit VM. And the VM you are using will not go that high.
It has nothing to do with any setting on the computer itself. That's not absolutely true.
On a Linux system I managed to use -Xmx2600m, so the virtual address space (not memory) allocated is pretty close to 3G; this on a machine with 2G, and swap partitions disabled (for the test). If I use -Xms2g, then it fails since there isn't enough memory to allocate.
On a WinXP machine it can only manage around 1600m, since the address space is split 2gb for the applicaton, and 2gb for the OS. However, this can be modified to a 3gb/1gb split via the "/3GB" switch in boot.ini (google it).
I don't know about the address split in Linux, but it's probably around 3/1.

  • Firefox uses more memory why? Also firefox 21 has 23 MB. but only 2.13MB. in the SD card why?

Can l transform firefox completely in to SD card

Only a certain amount can be transferred to to SD card, moving other data which is not allowed may cause Firefox to not work properly so what is moved to the SD card is what is move.

  • ITunes 10.5 is using more and more memory untill it crashes

iTunes 10.5 on my windows xp computer starts using 132MB of memory. When I add data to an app on my iPad2 (for instance adding my comic book collection) iTunes uses aprox. 10 MB of memory to get 1 comicbook to my iPad2.
Every time I add an new comicbook, iTunes uses more memory. Until it uses somewhat like 1.5 GB of memory. After that iTunes crashes to desktop.
I learned myself to add 80 comicbooks and then close iTunes again and restart to temporarely "fix" this, but it is quite annoying.
Why doesn't iTunes clean up its memory usage automatically? Is there a (un)known memory leak apple needs to fix?
Does anybody have suggestions what to check out or what to do without loosing my library/apps/data on my pc ?
(BTW. I had this problem with iTunes 10.4 as well)

Anyone have any idea? I see more threads like these (from 2010 !!!)
Apple, why will you not fix this?

  • Do I need more memory on my iMac (Mid 2011)?

First and for most I want to make sure that I'm addressing the correct problem that's why I am asking a question that appears to be asked by many people on here. I mainly use my imac 27" to produce music (I use Logic and a LOT of plugins and instruments) and well I always get the following message:
I hate it because I get it everytime Logic reaches a point where a lot of instruments and sounds come in (It's annoying and ruins my work flow). I usually just have logic and chrome open, bc I close everything else to help my situation.
I bought my iMac thinking it would be faster than any laptop and I now realize that it doesn't matter if it's a laptop or a desktop but rather the memory it has and other things included. Anyways what would all of you recommend? What would be most useful to change? Would it just be adding memory (increasing the 4GB)? Thanks for your time!!
    <Image Edited By Host>

I would just like to add to what everyone else said about 4GB really not being enough for doing much of anything. Even Safari and Mail can easily run up to the limit.
If you are running up against the memory limit, your computer will start doing what is known as "thrashing". On an OS like iOS, too much memory simply causes running apps to be killed. On Windows and OSX, if you try to use more memory than what is available, the computer will start to use a disk cache as if it was memory. It will try to put the "older" items in memory to the disk. If you need to access that memory, the OS needs to load it back from disk. The problem is that the disk is about 20x or more slower than memory. When your computer is thrashing, it will seem like it is not working at all.
If you are not running against the memory limit, then adding more memory will do absolutely nothing to improve performance. If you are running against the limit, you will be amazed at how much faster your computer will run with the extra memory.
As far as adding memory goes, as others have said, you need to add them in matched pairs. Also as other have said, the 2011 iMac secretly supports 8GB ram cards. (check OWC at macsales.com and they will confirm).
My advice would be to buy two 8GB cards ($109 at OWC) and add them in addition to your two 4GB cards. That will give you a total of 20GB. 20GB is TONS of memory and I am 100% sure that should be plenty for you. More is almost definitely overkill. You could almost definitely get away with adding 2 4GB cards for $50 as well (this would triple the memory you currently have), but memory is getting really cheap, and is a great way to "future proof" your computer.
If you want to see what your computer is doing, try looking at "Activity Monitor". If you start it up, sort the processes by "Real Mem" and you can see which processes are using the most memory (some of the processes will have cryptic names, but you should be able to tell most of them).
Also, click on "System Memory" at the bottom. Look at the "Page Ins" number ... if it is large, that means that you have been running into memory issues and having to "page in and out" memory to / from disk. You can also see what your processes are using currently. I forget exactly how OSX classifies the memory in each category, but Free is memory that is totally free, and "Wired" is memory that is in use. Active is basically memory in use, and Inactive is memory that is not really being used and can be made available for other processes, but I believe its being kept around in case the process that last used it decides it wants it back.

  • Adding more memory to Macbook Pro

    Hi Guys
I own a 13 inch Macbook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 which currently has 4GB of memory. It often seems to run quite slowly, so I was wondering whether it might be worth upgrading the memory on it. Based on what I've read online, it seems the way to tell if you could benefit from more memory is to look at page ins/outs. Compared to what I've seen online mine seem to be quite high.
I wondered if you guys could advise as to whether or not I could benefit from some additional memory? Would I actual notice any improvement in the performance of my MBP If I were to add more?
    Thanks in advance!
    George

General rule is if page outs exceed 10% to 15% of page ins, you can use more memory for the programs you run. In the picture you posted, essentially page outs = page ins. You can use more memory.
Your 2011 MBP can use up to 16GB of memory. Recommend installing in matched pairs, ie 2 x 4GB, for slightly better performance. OWC and Crucial are two good sources.

  • More Memory Needed???

I have recently upgraded to Leopard on my iMac G5 with 512 MB Ram. Since the upgrade my Mac has been running slowly. If I try to run several programs, it sometimes takes a very long time for a program to come up. Also, often the fans will run very loudly.
I suspect that I might (?) need more RAM. What are your experiences running Leopard with 512MB? Should I buy more RAM?
    Thanks for your help.

512MB is rather tight for memory these days.
Try starting an Applications -> Utility -> Terminal session and run the following command:
    sar -g 60 100
This will give you pageout information every 60 seconds for 100 minutes.
Now use your Mac as normal. After using it for a while, go back to Terminal and check the pageout numbers.
If a 60 second interval is too long, then change the command to
    sar -g 10 600
which will give you pageout information every 10 seconds.
Now if you have low pageout numbers or mostly zeros, then this is noise.
If you have consistant large numbers, then this is a strong indication that you could benefit from more memory.
And it my guess that with only 512MB you could use more memory, but sar will give you more concrete information to base a decision upon.

  • Sql 2014 std use few memory

    i implement sql 2014 std on server 2012 r2   on hyper-v
    server has memory 30 GB
but memory use few  about 16%  always
    i setting
maximum server memory in mb = 2147483647
minimum server memory in mb = 10240
why sql service  not use memory more i think if use more is better performance
    best regards
    chatchai-netd

If you have 30GB at OS level then please configure the memory correctly...
maximum server memory in mb = 2147483647
minimum server memory in mb = 10240
May be based on the load you can consider using 80% to sql and 20 % to OS or 70% to SQL and 30 % to OS ( but its all based on your SQL and OS usage ).
If your sql is not using more memory then that means sql instance is not performing too many transactions and load is very less.
Check what is running on your server and it will take memory and other resources based on the needs and work load.
